Maria Sharapova to make highly-anticipated return to competition in Stuttgart
Jo Konta could face returning Sharapova after being granted wildcard
The 25-year-old requested belated entry after missing last event with injury
Konta has been on sensational form and won Miami Open earlier this month.
Jo Konta has a one in 20 chance of being Maria Sharapova’s first opponent on her much-anticipated comeback in Stuttgart next week after being granted a late wildcard.
Konta was due to skip the Porsche Grand Prix, where the Russian is making her return after 15 months’ suspension.
But the 25-year-old requested a belated entry because she missed the WTA event in Charleston with injury after her triumph at the Miami Open earlier this month.
The British No 1 is ranked seven in the world, but her seeding will not be enough to gain one of the four first round byes, so she could meet Sharapova first up.
Controversially the Russian knows she will play on Wednesday, because her ban for a doping offence does not expire until midnight on Tuesday.
Konta has no such luxury and will have to hotfoot it from Constanza.
She is in Romania where at the weekend she is representing Great Britain in the Fed Cup World Group 2 promotion playoff.
Konta will be looking to pick up where she left off after making a sensational start to the season and claiming victory in Miami over Caroline Wozniacki.
