French Open increase prize money to £34m

The French Open have announced a rise in the prize funds for this summer’s tournament to £34m.

The changes also feature an increase in the singles champion’s prize money to £1.9m, an additional £100,000 from last year.

Players who are beaten in the first round will still return home with a reward of £35,000.

The tournament has been under pressure to raise the money put aside for prizes, as ATP player council president Novak Djokovic held a private player meeting in January to discuss his concerns.

Roger Federer was another player to voice his opinions on the matter, claiming that players deserve to take home larger remunerations from the showpiece tournaments in tennis.
