Liverpool have announced goalkeeper Alisson will provisionally wear the number 13 jersey for the Reds pre-season friendly against Napoli on Saturday.
The Brazilian is set to make his debut against the Italian side, having completed his £56m move from Roma last July and returning from a post-World Cup rest.
Alisson had been the number one goalkeeper in both standing and number for Roma last season but currently at Liverpool Loris Karius holds the no. 1 jersey.
And, at least provisionally, Alisson will not be Liverpool’s number one but their number 13.
A statement on the club’s website read: “He will have ‘A. Becker 13’ on his shirt for the game at the Aviva Stadium but supporters should note that this is a provisional, unconfirmed squad number for the Brazil international.
“The club will announce Alisson’s permanent number in due course, and that of fellow summer signing Fabinho, who has provisionally been wearing No.3 in pre-season.”
The news comes after reports claimed Alisson had decided not to take the number one jersey at Liverpool out of respect for Karius, whom he was brought in to replace as the starting goalkeeper.
Karius was picked ahead of Simon Mignolet after impressive displays last season but his Liverpool career took a turn for the worse after two costly and high-profile mistakes in the Reds’ 3-1 Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.
The German first threw the ball directly out to Karim Benzema for the game’s opener, before fumbling Gareth Bale’s shot from range to give Real their 3-1 lead.
As a result, Alisson was touted as the future Liverpool goalkeeper, with the deal eventually being done after his return from the World Cup in which he started for Brazil.
Loris has also been linked with a move away from Liverpool, though no official talks have been held and as yet the German remains at Anfield.
