Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has withdrawn from Serbia’s squad for their UEFA Nations League fixtures in Montenegro and Romania due to an unspecified injury.
The injury means he is a doubt for United’s Premier League fixture against former club Chelsea on October 20, live on Sky Sports.
United confirmed Matic has returned to the Aon Training Complex to complete his rehabilitation under the club’s guidance, having departed for international duty soon after he featured in United’s 3-2 win over Newcastle.
The 30-year-old has made eight appearances in all competitions for Jose Mourinho’s side this season, but could miss the chance to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge after the international break.
Matic made more than 150 appearances for Chelsea across two spells before linking up once again with former Blues boss Mourinho last year.
The news of Matic’s return to United comes a day after Luke Shaw pulled out of the England squad for their UEFA Nations League double-header against Croatia and Spain, live on Sky Sports.
Serbia will also be without captain Aleksandar Kolarov for their two fixtures due to injury.
