United sure De Gea will sign new deal

Manchester United reportedly remain “relaxed” over David De Gea’s contract talks despite the fact no progress has been made on getting the goalkeeper to sign to a new deal since negotiations began in August.

According to Rob Dawson of ESPN FC, United are prepared to make De Gea the best-paid goalkeeper in the world, but they need to convince the Spaniard of the club’s ambition or risk losing him.

The 27-year-old signed his current deal back in 2015, soon after a potential move to Real Madrid collapsed on transfer deadline day.

That contract expires at the end of 2018-19, and although United have the option to extend it by a further year, they need to get De Gea on new terms soon or risk losing their prized asset for free.

No player has been more important for United in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era than De Gea.

As arguably the world’s best goalkeeper—he was recently included in the FIFA FIFPro World XI—there must be concern at United that De Gea could want a move to a club whose success matches his quality.

Despite their storied history, United are not currently one of Europe’s top sides and look a long way from competing for the Premier League title, let alone the UEFA Champions League.

Real signed Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea in the summer so are no longer in the market for a new No. 1.

Meanwhile, 2017-18 league winners Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City all also have settled goalkeeping departments.

But the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus could be interested in the prospect of signing De Gea, and both clubs could offer him a better chance of winning major silverware than United currently can.
