England striker Marcus Rashford will miss the Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Montenegro with an ankle injury.
Gareth Southgate said he has known the Manchester United man would miss the first match for “a couple of days”.
He added that he would have “no problem” in selecting teenagers Jadon Sancho or Callum Hudson-Odoi instead.
“There’s no hesitation we’ll play someone we think suitable,” Southgate said.
“It is a good opportunity for the others. We have loads of creative players. There is real competition for places.
“If players miss games there is no guarantee they will get back in. It is a challenge for the group.”
Winger Hudson-Odoi has been on the fringe of the Chelsea this team, making six Premier League appearances but all from the bench.
Southgate admitted that while fellow 18-year-old Sancho’s situation at Borussia Dortmund, where he has played 26 Bundesliga games, is preferable, it would not be decisive in his thinking.
“People have asked what’s the selection policy. In the end the players have to have the quality to play in the shirt,” he added.
