Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa has been sanctioned with a hefty ban, following the ever-controversial hitman’s dismissal versus Barcelona last weekend.
The Spanish striker has been banned for eight games after making crude remarks about the referee’s mother during Atletico’s 2-0 loss to Barcelona.
While it was Barca who eventually emerged with all 3 points, a frantic opening half-hour to proceedings at the Camp Nou last Saturday actually saw Atletico match their illustrious hosts all over the pitch.
This was until a since widely-scrutinized incident with 28 minutes on the clock, which completely turned the tide of the clash.
The moment in question saw Diego Costa react angrily to a challenge in the middle of the park, with the former Chelsea man’s subsequent outburst at referee Jesus Gil Manzano having seen the official show little hesitation in handing Costa his marching orders
A spanish reporter submitted the exact words of Diego Costa in the incident below, “In the 28th minute the player Diego Da Silva Costa was sent off for the following motive: he shouted loudly at me the following words: ‘I SHIT ON YOUR WHORE MOTHER, I SHIT ON YOUR WHORE MOTHER.'”
The former Chelsea’s striker’s punishment came handy in two folds. First for insulting the referee’s mother (4 match ban) and second for holding the referee in his harms while he tried to pick his cards from his pockets.
This ban means the player will no linger play for the Spanish club this season and will miss a part of next season’s opener.
