Serena Williams Advances As Konta Crashes Out

Serena Williams is through to the semi-finals of Wimbledon, but she will not be joined by Johanna Konta after her exit on Tuesday.

Williams was well fancied to get through to the final four and she proved too much for fellow American Alison Riske. The 23-time Grand Slam champion was forced to work for her final-four spot, but she eventually claimed a 6-4 4-6 6-3 victory.

She now sets up a meeting with Czech Barbora Strycova after she beat Brit Konta in straight sets.

Konta had raced into a 4-1 lead but she was eventually eliminated after a 7-6(7-5) 6-1 scoreline. Williams is now just two matches away from her eighth Wimbledon title and she admits it is a huge win for her. “It was really satisfying,” the 37-year-old told the BBC.

“I wouldn’t have won that match a couple of weeks ago. “I’m glad I was able to come through. She was honestly playing amazing, she beat so many great players. “I was really pumped, it was for a place in the semis at Wimbledon and that doesn’t happen every day. It’s a long, arduous road.”
