Umtiti out for three months after foot surgery

Samuel Umtiti is expected to be out of action for around three months after undergoing surgery on a fractured metatarsal, Barcelona have announced.

France international Umtiti had a procedure on his right foot on Tuesday and will be consigned to the sidelines until April at the earliest.

A club statement read: “Samuel Umtiti has undergone successful surgery on the fifth metatarsal of his right foot.

“Tuesday’s operation was performed by Dr Antoni Dalmau under supervision of the FC Barcelona Medical Services. He is expected to be out of action for around three months.

“The French centre-back suffered the fracture in training on Monday.”

Umtiti this month signed a new contract that tied him to Camp Nou until 2026, despite having been heavily linked with an exit.

The World Cup-winning defender’s three-year extension included a temporary pay decrease that allowed new signing Ferran Torres to be registered.

Umtiti has long been a peripheral figure at Barcelona, featuring in just 17 games in all competitions since the start of last season.

Barcelona prepared to terminate Samuel Umtiti’s contract

Barcelona are threatening to terminate Samuel Umtiti’s contract if the Frenchman continues to refuse opportunities for an exit, according to a report.

The World Cup-winning defender has fallen out of favour under Ronald Koeman and is supposedly wanted off the books by Barcelona amid their desperate financial situation.

Umtiti was understood to have been in talks with Lyon over a potential return to France, but as things stand he remains contracted to Barca and is supposedly in no rush to leave.

According to Sport, should Umtiti reject the opportunity to depart the club properly, Barca will not hesitate to terminate his contract in the next few days.

The report adds that La Blaugrana are ‘very upset’ with Umtiti’s attitude, and the 27-year-old did not honour a pre-season agreement in which he would agree to an exit if he failed to convince coaches in friendlies.

Umtiti was unsurprisingly left out of Barca’s squad to face Real Sociedad at the weekend and still has just under two years left to run on his deal at Camp Nou

BARCELONA TELL PJANIC, UMTITI TO FIND A NEW CLUB

According to popular report, Barcelona have informed several players that Ronald Koeman and his staff will not be counting on them for the 21/22 campaign. Among the roster of players that will potentially find their way out of the Camp Nou are high-wage earners Samuel Umtiti and Miralem Pjanic.

Pjanic has totally struggled to break through into Koeman’s plans, having found himself as the sixth midfielder in his pecking order. Unable to offer the balanced, dynamic profile that the Dutch manager so often seeks from his players, the Bosnian has essentially been ostracised from the squad.

Samuel Umtiti has also suffered an equally difficult fate under Koeman. Having been injured for the first half of the season, ‘Samu’ found it difficult to break past Ronald Araujo, Gerard Pique, Clement Lenglet, and the dark horse in Barça’s defensive race, Oscar Mingueza.

In an effort to reduce Barça’s unmanageable wage bill, president Joan Laporta and co. are looking to ship such players out of the club. With tremendously high wages, it is likely that the club will prioritise Umtiti’s departure.

Additionally, it is looking nearly impossible for Pjanic to change Koeman’s mind, so his sale will likely be facilitated too. While he has a high level of skill, Pjanic does not possess the positional concepts or the high work rate required by a Blaugrana midfielder.

An additional report from MD outlines that the Bosnian is currently being looked at by his former club Juventus, as Massimiliano Allegri, who is returning to the club for his second stint, loves the prospect of having him.

Junior Firpo is another name included in the report. The Spanish-Dominican left-back has found it impossible to break through into the Dutchman’s plans. He will likely be either sold or used in a swap deal. Other names, such as Fransisco Trincao and Riqui Puig, will be kept on by the club, but only used in substitute roles.
