BAYERN MUNCHEN CRASH BARCELONA OUT OF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE IN 8-2 ROUT.

Bayern Munich scored eight goals as a humiliated Barcelona crashed out of the Champions League following an 8-2 mauling in Lisbon.

Thomas Muller and Philippe Coutinho both bagged a brace, while Serge Gnabry, Ivan Perisic, Joshua Kimmich and a David Alaba own goal annihilated a poor Barcelona side.

Hansi Flick had guided Bayern to an incredible run of 22 wins in 23 games, with 18 victories in a row and headed into this tie feeling confident after dismantling Chelsea 4-1 in the last-16 knockout round second leg.

It was no surprise to see the German stick to his guns and keep an unchanged starting line-up, while Barcelona head coach Quique Setien made a surprise call to start Arturo Vidal and keep Antoine Griezmann on the bench with a diamond midfield.

Much had been said in the build-up to this game about whether Robert Lewandowski could match up to Lionel Messi. With 53 goals in 44 appearances, it was certainly an argument that held some credibility.

But a big part of Lewandowski’s success was the unheralded Thomas Muller, who had racked up an astonishing 21 assists in the Bundesliga. This time, it was time for the Pole to return the favour – and that he did.

With just four minutes on the clock, Bayern moved it forward down the left with Ivan Perisic lofting a cross to Muller on the edge of the box. He performed an intelligent fake shot, instead exchanging a one-two with Lewandowski and shooting low into the corner past Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

It was a brilliant goal which did more to highlight Bayern’s ruthless finishing more than anything. But at the back, the German champions were badly exposed by their extremely high line and paid the price.

Clement Lenglet clipped a ball into Jordi Alba’s path and he squared it to Luis Suarez. But in attempting to clear it, the Austrian managed to loop the ball over his goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and into the top corner. A fine finish, just at the wrong end.

Barcelona had their foot firmly on the gas and were finding space in behind that high line. Two chances arrived in as many minutes, with Suarez denied by Neuer and Messi’s free-kick beating everyone but the post.

As both sides enjoyed spells in possession, it was Bayern’s relentless pressing that helped them retake the lead. Sergi Roberto was swamped by three white shirts and Alphonso Davies passed it wide to Ivan Perisic, whose low strike – with the aid of a dlefection from Lenglet – squeezed past Ter Stegen.

The heavens opened after that strike and Barcelona were quite simply crumbling under the pressure. Thiago’s sublime no-look pass found Lewandowski, who crafted a perfect ball over the top to Serge Gnabry and he finished with composure and precison to extend the advantage to 3-1.

Four minutes later, it was four. Muller was at the right place at the right time to meet Leon Goretzka’s near-post delivery and prodded past the helpless Ter Stegen.

Bayern began to hunt down a Barcelona side lacking composure on the ball and only Lewandowski will know how he didn’t add his name to the growing scoresheet.

Luis Suarez got one back for Barcelona and with half an hour still to go, a comeback was not out of the question.

But Bayern, having brought on Coutinho to face his parent club, were hoping to create something special. And when Alphonso Davies sold Nelson Semedo with a fine piece of skill, Kimmich tapped home to make it five.

The warning signs were there when Lewandowski was denied his goal by the offside there. Still, Barcelona didn’t take notice and began to crumble.

Coutinho dribbled down the left, found Lewandowski in the box and the Pole made it 14 goals in the Champions League – and six for Bayern. VAR took a long time to review the goal for offside, but it stood.

And Setien’s side simply threw in the towel. Coutinho, perhaps acting with a sense of vengence, reacted first after some awful defending from the Blaugrana to tap home. He got a second three minutes later, sliding home into the bottom corner.

The humiliation was truly completed. Setien turned away with a lost look in his eyes and Barca trudged off the pitch in shame. Their worst-ever defeat in Europe – and a capitulation of this kind was a perfect exhibition of just how far they have fallen.

BARCELONA’S UMTITI TESTS POSITIVE FOR CORONA VIRUS.

Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti has tested positive for coronavirus but is not with the rest of the squad for their Champions League quarter-final with Bayern Munich.

The Frenchman is currently injured and tested positive at Barcelona’s training ground on Thursday.

He is asymptomatic and is self-isolating at home.

Umtiti is the second player to test positive from Barcelona’s squad away from their Champions League preparations after a player tested positive from Tuesday’s round of testing.

The players tested on Tuesday were: Pedri, Trincao, Matheus Fernandes, Jean-Clair Todibo, Moussa Wague, Carles Alena, Rafinha, Juan Miranda and Oriol Busquets.

Barcelona said in a statement: “After the PCR tests carried out on Thursday the first team player Samuel Umtiti has tested positive for Covid-19. The player is asymptomatic, is in good health and is isolating at home.

The club has informed the relevant sporting and health authorities as well as tracing all the people who have had contact with the player so that they can undergo the corresponding PCR tests.”

Barcelona’s out-of-squad players had returned to pre-season training on Wednesday.

Neville to Leave England manager job

Netherlands women’s manager Sarina Wiegman will succeed Phil Neville as England’s head coach in September 2021.

The former Netherlands defender has signed a four-year deal, with Neville set to leave the role next summer.

Wiegman, 50, will take charge after overseeing the Netherlands at the postponed Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

“Sarina was our number one choice,” said Baroness Campbell, the Football Association’s director of women’s football.

The FA said a decision on who will take charge of Great Britain at the Olympics in Japan will be announced “in due course”.

Neville is under contract until July 2021, with the Games due to run from 23 July to 8 August.

“England is the cradle of football and I’m very much looking forward to contributing my experience and expertise to this ambitious team,” said Wiegman.

Wiegman’s first major tournament in charge of the Lionesses will be the Women’s Euro 2021 on home soil.

Willian signs for Arsenal

Arsenal have signed Brazil midfielder Willian on a three-year deal after the 32-year-old’s contract with Chelsea expired.

The Blues had offered the player a new deal but were unwilling to match what the Gunners had on the table.

“I believe he’s a player that can really make a difference for us,” said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.

“We had a clear intention to strengthen in the attacking midfielder and the winger positions.”

Willian made 339 appearances for Chelsea after signing from Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala for £30m in 2013.

He won five major honours with the Blues, including two Premier League titles and the Europa League, and was voted the club’s players’ player of the year twice.

“He is a player that gives us a lot of versatility – he can play in three or four different positions,” added Arteta.

“He has the experience of everything in the football world but still has the ambition to come here and contribute to bring the club where it belongs.

“I have been really impressed with all the talks I have had with him and how much he wanted to come.”

Arsenal finished eighth in the Premier League last season, while Chelsea were fourth and secured a Champions League spot.

However, the Gunners did beat their London rivals in the FA Cup final – a game Willian missed through injury – to make sure of a place in the Europa League.

Andreescu will not defend her US Open title

Defending champion Bianca Andreescu has withdrawn from this year’s US Open because the coronavirus pandemic has hampered her return from injury.

The Canadian, 20, has not played since sustaining a knee injury at the WTA Finals in October.

The US Open will be held behind closed doors in New York from 31 August.

“I have made the difficult decision not to return to New York this year,” said Andreescu, who beat Serena Williams in last year’s final.

“I have taken this step in order to focus on my match fitness and ensure that I return ready to play at my highest level.”

Andreescu added that “unforeseen challenges” including the cancellation of events because of the coronavirus pandemic have “compromised my ability to prepare and compete to the degree necessary to play at my highest level”.

World number six Andreescu is the fourth women’s top 20 player to pull out of the US Open after world number one Ashleigh Barty, Elina Svitolina and Kiki Bertens, who are ranked fifth and seventh respectively.

World number two Simona Halep, from Romania, is not expected to play either.

However, 23-time Grand Slam champion Williams says she still plans to compete at the tournament.

Men’s world number one Novak Djokovic has confirmed he will play but defending champion Rafael Nadal pulled out citing concerns over coronavirus earlier this month, while Roger Federer is absent recovering from injury.

Bayern Munich vs Barcelona Preview

Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich will hope to continue their impressive dominant record against Barcelona, when both teams clash in Lisbon, Portugal, on Friday night in the quarter-final of this season’s UEFA Champions League.

Bayern go into the encounter on the back of six wins to Barcelona’s two and two draws in their 10 previous clashes, which is an indication of the size of the task facing the LaLiga club.

In their last meeting in the semi-finals in 2015, Barcelona triumphed 5-3 on aggregate and went on to become champions.

But in 2013, Bayern inflicted on Barcelona one of their heaviest defeats in their Champions League history as they smashed them 7-0 on aggregate.

There is certainly pressure on Barcelona as they probably need to win this season’s Champions League to make it a successful campaign after relinquishing the LaLiga title to Real Madrid.

Barcelona have only lost two of their last 31 Champions League games, though, and are unbeaten in their last six matches against German clubs since the second-leg defeat to Bayern in the semi-finals of the 2015 competition.

Incredibly, this is Barcelona’s 13th successive Champions League quarter-final – a competition record.

The Catalan giants were incredibly knocked out by Liverpool in the semi-finals last season despite a 3-0 victory in the first leg and will be determined to go all the way to the final on this occasion.

Bayern were the only side to collect maximum points in this season’s group stage, meaning that they have won all eight of their Champions League fixtures this term, while they are unbeaten in their last 13 European games outside Munich, picking up 10 victories in the process.

The German giants have lost five of their last six knockout ties with La Liga teams, including defeat to Real Madrid in the semi-finals of the 2017-18 competition, while they have only won one of their last six matches against Spanish clubs, suffering three defeats in the process.

On the injury front, Barcelona will again be without Samuel Umtiti due to a knee injury, but Ousmane Dembele has returned to training following a long-term hamstring issue, and the Frenchman could be involved off the bench.

The Spanish club will also be boosted by the returns of midfielders Sergio Busquets and Arturo Vidal from suspension, and there is a feeling that both players will come into the starting XI.

As for Bayern, experienced centre-back Jerome Boateng will allegedly overcome the issue that he picked up against Chelsea to start, while Kingsley Coman is expected to be available following a muscular problem.

Coman could replace Ivan Perisic on the left of an attack which will also include Thomas Muller and Serge Gnabry, while Benjamin Pavard’s ongoing absence with an ankle injury means that Joshua Kimmich will continue on the right of a back four.

Meanwhile, Chilean star Arturo Vidal has warned his former side Bayern they are not about to face a Bundesliga club but Barcelona with Lionel Messi on their side.

“Bayern will be confident but they must know that tomorrow they’re not playing any old team in the Bundesliga, they’re playing against Barca,” he said.

“I understand the pessimism but we are the best team in the world. The problem is that we don’t always show it on the pitch and we recently lost the league. But we have Leo, we have the best players and we want to prove ourselves.”

However, Germany and Bayern legend believes 19-year-old Alphonso Davies will not be fazed by the presence of Messi, that the Argentine will be taken care of by the young left-back.

“Alphonso had a great season and was rightly voted Rookie of the Season.

“Should Messi play on his left side, Alphonso will take care of him. It will be a difficult but interesting task. Davies hasn’t been dribbled past or overrun much this season.”

LEIPZIG STUN ATLETICO MADRID TO REACH UCL SEMI-FINAL; FACES PSG NEXT

RB Leipzig overcame the departure of top scorer Timo Werner when they stunned Atletico Madrid 2-1 on Thursday to set up a Champions League semi-final with Paris Saint-Germain.

Dani Olmo headed Leipzig ahead in the 51st minute, youngster Joao Felix levelled for Atletico 20 minutes later from a penalty, but a deflected shot from Tyler Adams won it for Leipzig in the 88th.

Founded only in 2009 and playing in the elite event for the second time, Leipzig dominated possession at the Estadio Jose Alvalade against three-time runners-up Atletico.

The Spanish outfit was a far cry from their last 16 triumph over title holders Liverpool.

The eastern Germans caused a second surprise in a row after ousting last season’s runners-up Tottenham Hotspur in the previous round.

They are the first German club other than Bayern and Borussia Dortmund to reach the last four since Schalke in 2011.

On Tuesday, Leipzig play PSG who won the first quarter-final 2-1 over Atalanta. Both will be bidding for a first-ever place in the final.

“It was hard work. But we deserved victory, we are overjoyed,” Leipzig’s Marcel Sabitzer told streaming portal DAZN.

“We stayed calm after the equaliser, had a little luck and won.”

Yussuf Paulsen took the place of Werner who departed for Chelsea after the end of the German season while there was no place for Felix in Diego Simeone’s starting line-up in a return of the youngster to his home country.

Julian Nagelsmann’s Leipzig got the first chance when Marcel Halstenberg volleyed over the bar in the fourth minute after Atletico failed to clear decisively.

On the other end the lively Yannick Carrasco forced Peter Gulacsi to a first save in the 13th from a tight angle, after a determined run from Renan Lodi down the left.

Six minutes after the break the Germans found the opening, patiently passing the ball around the Atletico penalty area from left to right, and Sabitzer’s cross from the right then met by Olmo’s glancing header into the far right corner.

Felix came on in the 58th and quickly made an impact. He was fouled by Lukas Klostermann and calmly converted the penalty himself in the 71st into the bottom left corner past the diving Gulacsi.

The goal gave Atletico confidence but it was Leipzig who eventually prevailed. The Germans broke on the left and the ball came to the substitute Adams whose shot from some 20 metres deflected by Savic into the net over the wrong-footed Oblak.

Atletico furiously pressed for another equaliser, with even Oblak moving up front, but Leipzig hung on through eight minutes of stoppage time.

The other quarter-finals at the mini-tournament behind closed doors in Lisbon are Bayern Munich against Barcelona on Friday, while Manchester City clash with Olympique Lyon.

Djokovic to contest US open

World number one Novak Djokovic has confirmed he will play at the US Open, which starts on 31 August, in New York.

Defending champion Rafael Nadal has already decided not to enter because of concerns about Covid-19, while five-time winner Roger Federer is recovering from knee surgery.

In June, Djokovic called the US Open’s coronavirus safety protocols “extreme”.

“It was not an easy decision to make, but the prospect of competing again makes me really excited,” he said.

Djokovic, who is president of the ATP Player Council, had previously questioned the protocols in place for the tournament to go ahead and spoke to organisers about his concerns.

The 33-year-old will arrive in the United States on 15 August to compete at the Western and Southern Open, which takes place in New York – instead of its usual Cincinnati home – from 20 to 28 August.

Both events are to be held without fans at Flushing Meadows, with players having to follow strict safety measures.

Despite those measures, a number of other players have followed Nadal in withdrawing, including women’s world number one Ashleigh Barty and fellow Australian Nick Kyrgios.

Former world number one Andy Murray is expected to compete after being granted a wildcard.

Djokovic has not played since apologising after he and three other players tested positive for Covid-19 at his own Adria Tour competition.

He later admitted it had been “too soon” to stage the tournament.

Ozil will see out his contract

Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil says he will stay with the club “through to the last day” of his contract in June 2021.

The former Germany international, 31, has not played since the Premier League resumed in June, with manager Mikel Arteta citing “pure football reasons”.

But Ozil dismissed reports the club were looking to pay up the last year of his £350,000-a-week deal.

“Things have been difficult but I love Arsenal,” he told the Athletic. “I’ll decide when I go, not other people.”

“I’ll give everything I have for this club,” Ozil added. “Situations like these will never break me, they only make me stronger. I showed in the past that I can come back into the team and I will show it again.”

Ozil, who joined Arsenal in a £42.4m move from Real Madrid in 2013, fell out of favour under previous manager Unai Emery before returning to the side under interim boss Freddie Ljungberg.

After Arteta’s appointment in December, Ozil started all 10 of Arsenal’s Premier League games immediately before the coronavirus pandemic forced a three-month suspension of the Premier League in March, but has not featured in their past 13 matches in all competitions.

Despite Arteta and his first-team players accepting a 12.5% pay cut in April, Arsenal announced they plan to make 55 staff redundant because of the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Ozil opted against a pay cut because the players were “rushed” and believes “possibly the decision affected my chances on the pitch”.

While he respects Arteta’s decision to leave him out, Ozil believes he should have been given a chance to show what he can do on the pitch, saying: “You don’t play 10 games in a row if you’re unfit, not good enough or don’t behave well.”

He added that he was “not the only player who rejected the cut in the end, but only my name came out”.

Vertoghen to move to Benfica

Former Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen is having a medical at Benfica on Thursday before signing a three-year deal.

Vertonghen, 33, left Spurs at the end of the season after eight years with the Premier League club.

The Belgium international made over 300 appearances for Tottenham.

Benfica finished second in the Portuguese top flight last season and will enter the Champions League at the third qualifying round stage.

Vertonghen did not win a major honour in England. He was part of the Spurs teams that lost the League Cup final to Chelsea in 2015 and the Champions League final to Liverpool in 2019.
