Football legend Diego Maradona dies from heart attack aged 60

Argentina’s 1986 World Cup-winning captain Diego Maradona has died after suffering a heart attack at his home.

The 60-year-old is widely regarded as one of the greatest players to have ever played the game, often vying with the likes of Pele, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the conversation regarding the best footballers of all time.

Maradona has been beset by health problems in recent years, though, and earlier this month underwent a successful operation for a blood clot on his brain.

The former Argentina international and Napoli legend subsequently checked into a recovery clinic to be treated for alcohol dependency.

Reports emerged from Argentina on Wednesday afternoon that the legendary forward had died after suffering a heart attack in his home in Tigre, aged 60.

Maradona enjoyed an illustrious career which saw him turn out for Argentinos Juniors, Boca Juniors, Barcelona, Napoli, Sevilla and Newell’s Old Boys, with his most famous spell coming at Napoli as he helped the then-unfashionable Italian outfit to two Serie A titles.

The attacker’s greatest achievements came with Argentina, though, as he led his country to glory at the 1986 World Cup, scoring the ‘Hand of God’ and ‘Goal of the Century’ in one game against England along the way.

After hanging up his boots, Maradona turned to management, including a spell in charge of Argentina where he led them to the 2010 World Cup.

Maradona was in charge of Argentine club side Gimnasia de La Plata at the time of his death.

JANUZAJ STARS AS REAL SOCIEDAD EXTENDS THEIR LEAD ON LA LIGA TABLE.

Real Sociedad moved three points clear at the top of La Liga after Alexander Isak’s goal proved the difference in a 1-0 win over Cadiz.

Isak headed in Adnan Januzaj’s cross shortly after the hour mark at the Ramon Carranza to secure a sixth consecutive league victory for La Real.

An excellent start to the season shows no sign of abating, with Imanol Alguacil’s side now three points clear of second-placed Atletico Madrid, albeit having played two games more.

They have scored an impressive 21 goals from their opening 10 matches, the highest tally in the league, and conceded only four.

After travelling to AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League on Thursday, Real Sociedad play at home to Villarreal, who sit third and are the league’s other surprise high-fliers.

Defeat means Cadiz sit sixth, just above Sevilla after a strong start for the newly-promoted side.

Getafe, who had Irish youngster Ryan Nolan among their substitutes, were earlier held to a goalless draw by Eibar.

SERIE A: AGELESS IBRAHIMOVIC’S BRACE HELP AC MILAN BEAT NAPOLI: INTER MILAN COME FROM BEHIND TO DEFEAT TORINO.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic remains unstoppable and AC Milan remain unbeaten atop Serie A.

The 39-year-old Ibrahimovic scored twice to raise his total to 10 goals in six games played as Milan won 3-1 at Napoli on Sunday.

“He seems even stronger now than he was 10-12 years ago,” said Napoli coach Gennaro Gattuso, who teamed with Ibrahimovic when Milan last won the Italian league in 2011.

However, there was concern for Ibrahimovic when he exited toward the end clutching his hamstring. The Swedish superstar already missed two games this season after contracting the coronavirus.

” It looks like a muscular problem but we’ll have to wait a few days to understand the extent of it,” said Milan assistant coach Daniele Bonera, who was standing in for head coach Stefano Pioli, who has the coronavirus .

The Rossoneri again moved two points ahead of Sassuolo, which won 2-0 at Hellas Verona earlier to also remain undefeated through eight rounds.

Having also beaten Inter Milan in the city derby and drawn with Roma, Milan’s unexpected title credentials are growing week by week.

Milan finished no better than fifth the past seven seasons.

“It shows that we’re on the right track,” Bonera said. “But it’s really premature after eight rounds to talk about what might happen in May. There’s a long way to go.”

Ibrahimovic soared above Kalidou Koulibaly to head in from long range following a cross from Theo Hernandez midway through the first half.

After Giovanni Di Lorenzo hit the crossbar for Napoli, Ibrahimovic used his thigh to steer in another goal by the far post following a cross from Ante Rebic near the hour mark.

Dries Mertens pulled one back for Napoli less than 10 minutes later from close range after getting away from Alessio Romagnoli.

But Napoli’s comeback quickly lost steam when Tiémoué Bakayoko was sent off after picking up his second yellow card for a foul on Hernandez.

Jens Petter Hauge added another goal for Milan five minutes into stoppage time, from a tight angle.

INTER COMEBACK

Two late goals helped Inter Milan fight back from 2-0 down to beat Torino 4-2 thanks to an inspired Romelu Lukaku.

Both sides had players ruled out with the coronavirus . Torino was also missing coach Marco Giampaolo because of the virus and forward Andrea Belotti pulled out injured during the warmup.

His replacement, Simone Zaza, fired Torino in front on the stroke of halftime and Cristian Ansaldi doubled the visitors’ lead in the 62nd from the penalty spot after Ashley Young fouled Wilfried Stephane Singo.

Inter pulled one back just two minutes later as Lukaku’s shot came off the crossbar with Alexis Sánchez managing to fire in the rebound.

Lukaku then hit the post before turning in Sánchez’s cross.

And Inter’s comeback was complete six minutes from time when Lukaku converted a penalty after Achraf Hakimi was tripped in the area by Nicolas Nkoulou.

Inter sealed the match in the final minute when Lukaku ran down the left and rolled across for Lautaro Martínez to tap in.

SUPER SASSUOLO

It is only Sassuolo’s eighth season in the Italian top flight and the team has never finished higher than sixth. But a Champions League spot is now in sight for the Emilia-Romagna club.

Verona dominated the match, hitting the woodwork four times. But Sassuolo broke the deadlock three minutes from the interval and against the run of play.

Jérémie Boga latched onto Domenico Berardi’s crossfield pass and curled it into the far top corner.

Berardi got onto the scoresheet himself in the 76th minute as Verona players failed to close him down before he unleashed a shot that took a slight deflection to dip under the crossbar.

Sassuolo remained one point ahead of third-place Roma, which beat Parma 3-0.

OTHER MATCHES

Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored twice in an impressive first half for Roma after Borja Mayoral’s opener.

Mkhitaryan has now scored five goals in his last two Serie A matches.

Cesare Prandelli’s first match back in charge of Fiorentina ended in a 1-0 defeat at home to Benevento.

Also, Bologna won 2-1 at Sampdoria and Udinese beat Genoa 1-0.

SALAH SETS FOR LIVERPOOL RETURN AFTER TESTING NEGATIVE TO CORONA VIRUS.

Mohamed Salah could return for Liverpool when they host Atalanta on Wednesday after returning a negative result from a COVID-19 test.

The Reds were without their 10-goal top scorer for the 3-0 win over Leicester on Sunday after he tested positive for the illness three times during the recent international break in Egypt.

Salah was forced to sit out the African Cup of Nations qualifying double-header with Togo after the diagnosis earlier this month.

After initially testing positive on Friday November 13, Salah was tested upon his return to the United Kingdom on Friday when he and Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny flew back to London from Hurghada International Airport.

That test has now come back negative, freeing up Salah to return to training under Premier League protocols that say a 10-day isolation period is needed after the first positive test.

Egypt’s health ministry have confirmed that Salah’s latest test was negative, theoretically enabling him to return to the fold with Jurgen Klopp’s side in midweek.

“Salah’s latest test returned a negative result,” health ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed told local media.

He has received a week-long treatment in accordance with the Egyptian protocol until he fully recovered.”

With the Reds hosting Atalanta in the Champions League on Wednesday, the forward may be available for selection once again.

Manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed Salah’s return in his post-Leicester press conference.

He said: “Is Mo negative? That is what I have heard.

“Yes, it is a negative today. I think from now on he is pretty normal with all the testings.

“We have tomorrow the UEFA testing for the Champions League and he can now train with us tomorrow.

“I don’t know about the second test the day after [for the Premier League], but there could be a Premier League test already again.

“He has two tests in the next two days so yes he will be tested like all of us.”

But the Brazilian striker’s persistence was rewarded as he made it 3-0 with a towering header from another Milner corner.

The win takes Liverpool’s unbeaten Premier League run at Anfield to 64 matches, a club record in the top flight.

LEEDS UTD 0-0 ARSENAL: LENO DENIES LEEDS VICTORY AS THE WHITES FORCED TO A BARREN DRAW.

Leeds United hit the woodwork three times and came up against an inspired display from goalkeeper Bernd Leno as 10-man Arsenal held them to a goalless draw at Elland Road.

Leno twice denied Patrick Bamford in the first half, before saving from Stuart Dallas and substitute Ian Poveda-Ocampo after the break.

Arsenal’s task became harder when Nicolas Pepe was sent off in the 51st minute for an altercation with Ezgjan Alioski, after referee Anthony Taylor reviewed the incident on the pitchside monitor.

Rodrigo then curled a shot against the bar, before, in the closing stages, Bamford headed against a post and Raphinha slammed a shot against the upright.

Arsenal substitute Bukayo Saka nearly snatched an unlikely win for the visitors late on, only to be denied by Illan Meslier.

The point takes Arsenal up to 11th position on 13 points, two more than 14th-placed Leeds.

FULHAM 2-3 EVERTON: CALVERT LEWIN BRACE HELP TOFFEES BACK TO WINNING WAYS AT CRAVEN COTTAGE.

Two goals by the Premier League’s leading scorer Dominic Calvert-Lewin helped Everton overcome Fulham 3-2 at Craven Cottage.

The visitors were ahead after just 41 seconds, Richarlison making an instant impact on his return from suspension as he crossed for Calvert-Lewin to tap in the fastest goal of the season so far.

Bobby De Cordova-Reid drew Fulham level on 15 minutes following a neat exchange with Tom Cairney.

But Lucas Digne then assisted two further first-half goals for the visitors. The Frenchman squared the ball for Calvert-Lewin’s second of the match and 10th of the season, before crossing for Abdoulaye Doucoure to head in his first Everton goal.

Ivan Cavaleiro miskicked a penalty over the crossbar for Fulham’s third successive failed spot-kick this season, before substitute Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s deflected effort pulled a goal back on 70 minutes.

Everton held on to end a run of three straight losses and move up to sixth place.

Fulham stay 17th with four points from nine matches.

MAN UTD 1-0 WESTBROM: FERNANDES’ RETAKEN PENALTY EARNS FIRST HOME WIN FOR THE DEVILS.

Bruno Fernandes’ second-half penalty proved the difference as Manchester United earned a 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion.

Man Utd started the match well but West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone twice produced fine saves to deny Anthony Martial.

A minute after the break, West Brom were awarded a penalty following a foul on Conor Gallagher by Fernandes. However, referee David Coote overturned his decision after reviewing the pitchside monitor.

At the other end, a penalty for handball by Darnell Furlong was converted at the second attempt by Fernandes on 56 minutes.

The Portuguese’s spot-kick was initially saved, but the VAR adjudged Johnstone came off his line too early and the retaken penalty was scored.

A first home victory of the season moves Man Utd up to ninth on 13 points. West Brom stay 18th on three points.

HAALAND BEATS ANSU, SANCHO, DAVIES TO WIN GOLDEN BOY AWARD.

Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland has been named the winner of the 2020 Golden Boy award.

Haaland beat off competition from Barcelona forward Ansu Fati, who was runner-up, to win the award. Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies came third while Haaland’s Dortmund teammate Jadon Sancho took the fourth spot. Rennes’ Eduardo Camavinga came in fifth place.

Juventus’ Dejan Kulusevski, Manchester City’s Phil Foden, FC Salzburg’s Dominik Szoboszlai, Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka and Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. completed the top 10.

A stellar list of 40 names had been released in October and included Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood and United States international Sergino Dest after an impressive breakthrough campaign at Ajax before his move to Barcelona.

The award, handed out by Italian newspaper Tuttosport, honours the best young player in Europe for the calendar year.

Past winners include Lionel Messi, Wayne Rooney and Kylian Mbappe, with Atletico Madrid forward Joao Felix having claimed the award last year. Haaland is the first Scandinavian player to win it.

Haaland joined Dortmund from FC Salzburg in January after a stunning start to the season in which he scored 28 goals in 22 matches. He scored eight times as the Austrian side crashed out of the Champions League in the group stage.

He scored a hat trick on his Champions League debut as well as goals in each of his first five outings and became the competition’s highest-scoring teenager in a single season.

The 20-year-old continued his incredible form with another treble on his Dortmund bow, which helped Lucien Favre’s side come from 3-1 down to beat Augsburg 5-3.

Haaland finished the last campaign with 29 goals in all competitions and was sixth in the race for the European Golden Shoe — level with Messi. He has 11 goals in 11 games for Dortmund in all competitions so far this season.
