LIV 1-1 WBA: THE HAWTHORNS STUN LIVERPOOL TO CLAIM POINT AT ANFIELD.

Sam Allardyce first away manager to avoid defeat at Anfield this season thanks to Semi Ajayi’s late header

Semi Ajayi’s 82nd-minute header made Sam Allardyce’s West Bromwich Albion the first team to deny Liverpool a win at Anfield this season.

Liverpool started on the front foot, with Sadio Mane firing them ahead on 12 minutes when he controlled Joel Matip’s pass, spun and scored.

The home side dominated but could not turn their 82 per cent possession in the first half into further goals.

West Brom had more of the game after the break, with Karlan Grant and Ajayi each having efforts saved by Alisson.

The equaliser came as Ajayi rose highest to head in Matheus Pereira’s cross off the post.

Roberto Firmino almost snatched a last-minute winner for the champions but his header was superbly tipped wide by Sam Johnstone.

Liverpool have 32 points, three clear of Everton at the top, while West Brom remain 19th with eight points.

SOUCEK’S LATE HEADER EARNS THE HAMMERS A POINT.

Tomas Soucek’s 82nd-minute header earned West Ham United a 2-2 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion at London Stadium.

Brighton dominated the opening 45 minutes and got their reward just before the break, when Neal Maupay turned in a loose ball from close range for his fifth goal of the season.

West Ham levelled on 60 minutes with a first Premier League goal by Ben Johnson, who was teed up by half-time substitute Manuel Lanzini.

Brighton led again in the 70th minute when Lewis Dunk poked home a loose ball after it had hit him from a corner.

But West Ham fought back once more as Soucek converted Aaron Cresswell’s corner.

A third successive draw moves Brighton above Burnley on goal difference into 16th with 13 points. West Ham stay 10th with 22 points.

BAMFORD’S EARLY PENALTY END BURNLEY’S UNBEATEN RUN.

Patrick Bamford’s early penalty was the difference in the first Premier League meeting between Leeds United and Burnley.

Bamford won and converted the spot-kick after five minutes to take his tally for the season to 10 goals.

Leeds pushed for a second with Rodrigo, Jack Harrison and Pablo Hernandez all denied by Nick Pope.

In the second half Burnley rallied but they could find no way past Illan Meslier, who made six saves including a late stop from Ashley Barnes.

Burnley’s best chance of an equaliser fell to Jay Rodriguez on 81 minutes but the substitute fired over the bar from close range.

Leeds rise to 11th place with 20 points, while Burnley are 17th on 13 points after their four-match unbeaten run came to an end.

SIGURDSSON’S LATE GOAL MOVE EVERTON TO SECOND ON THE LOG.

Gylfi Sigurdsson’s 80th-minute strike earned Everton a fourth consecutive victory as they moved up to second place with a 1-0 win at Sheffield United.

Abdoulaye Doucoure teed up Sigurdsson, who took a touch before drilling a low shot into the bottom-left corner to clinch all three points.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Sigurdsson both fired narrowly off target during the first half, while Oliver Burke shot inches wide for Sheff Utd.

Enda Stevens lashed over the crossbar and substitute Oliver McBurnie missed an opportunity as Sheff Utd pushed for a late equaliser.

Everton kept their hosts at bay to move up to 29 points, two behind leaders Liverpool who have a match in hand at West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

Sheff Utd remain bottom of the table on two points.

AVL 3-0 CRY: 10-MAN VILLA THRASH CRYSTAL PALACE TO CLIMB TO SIXTH ON THE LOG.

Anwar El Ghazi scored a stunning goal as 10-man Aston Villa earned a 3-0 win over Crystal Palace to rise to sixth.

Bertrand Traore gave Aston Villa a fifth-minute lead when he reacted quickest after Vicente Guaita had saved from Ollie Watkins.

Just before half-time, Tyrone Mings was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a foul on Wilfried Zaha.

Villa still managed to double their advantage on 66 minutes when Watkins headed against the crossbar and Kortney Hause bundled in.

Ten minutes later it was 3-0 as Watkins passed to El Ghazi who curled a first-time strike in off the post.

Watkins was then denied a deserved goal of his own when he hit the woodwork for a second time after a superb through-ball from Jack Grealish.

Villa are six points behind leaders Liverpool having played a match fewer.

Crystal Palace are without a goal and a point in two straight league matches. This defeat comes after receiving seven unreplied goals from Liverpool last weekend at Selhurst Park.

The Eagles are 13th on 18 points after back-to-back defeats.

XHAKA, SAKA ON TARGET AS GUNNERS BEAT THE BLUES TO REVIVE FORM.

Granit Xhaka’s superb free-kick helped Arsenal end their seven-match winless run as they defeated Chelsea 3-1 at Emirates Stadium.

Chelsea went close to opening the scoring when Mason Mount’s free-kick hit the outside of a post.

But Arsenal took the lead on 34 minutes, with Alexandre Lacazette converting a penalty after Reece James had fouled Kieran Tierney.

Xhaka doubled Arsenal’s advantage 10 minutes later with a brilliant set-piece strike into the top-right corner from 25 yards.

It was 3-0 on 56 minutes as Bukayo Saka curled the ball in off the inside of the left post from a tight angle from the far-right side of the penalty area.

Tammy Abraham chested in Callum Hudson-Odoi’s cross with five minutes remaining as Chelsea rallied, but the visitors were denied a second when Bernd Leno saved Jorginho’s stoppage-time penalty.

Arsenal move up to 14th with 17 points, while a third consecutive away defeat leaves Chelsea seventh on 25 points.

FULHAM 0-0 SOTON: BARREN DRAW AT CRAVEN COTTAGE ON BOXING DAY.

Southampton twice thought they had scored second-half goals only to be denied each time for offside in a 0-0 draw at Fulham.

In a first half of few chances, James Ward-Prowse came closest to a goal but his free-kick hit the crossbar before Che Adams was unable to convert on the rebound.

After the break, Ivan Cavaleiro headed over a fine cross from Antonee Robinson following a swift counter-attack by Fulham.

Shane Long thought he had put Southampton ahead on 76 minutes but the striker was offside when Ryan Bertrand had passed to him.

Theo Walcott then suffered a similar fate with five minutes remaining, as his effort was ruled out following a VAR review after Adams was offside in the build-up.

Fulham remain 18th, on 11 points, while Southampton drop to ninth with 25 points

LEI 2-2 MUN: FOXES GETS LATE GOAL TO MAKE IT STALEMATE WITH RED DEVILS.

Jamie Vardy forced a late own goal from Axel Tuanzebe as Leicester City twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw with Manchester United.

Man Utd began brightly and Marcus Rashford missed an early chance to open the scoring, heading over from Bruno Fernandes’s cross.

The pair combined again on 23 minutes when Fernandes diverted a pass from Daniel James into Rashford’s path for the striker to convert his 50th Premier League goal.

Harvey Barnes equalised for Leicester eight minutes later, sending a fierce strike beyond David De Gea.

On 79 minutes, substitute Edinson Cavani played in Fernandes, who slotted past Kasper Schmeichel.

But with five minutes left, Ayoze Perez’s low cross was met by Vardy, whose first-time shot deflected in off Tuanzebe.

Third-placed Leicester move three points behind leaders Liverpool, and remain a place and a point above Man Utd, who have a match in hand.

MCI 2-0 NEW: GUNDOGAN, TORRES SINK MAGPIES TO LIFT CITY TO FIFTH ON THE LOG.

Goals by Ilkay Gundogan and Ferran Torres made it back-to-back victories for Manchester City as they beat Newcastle United 2-0 to move up to fifth place.

Gundogan put Man City in front on 14 minutes when he turned in Raheem Sterling’s cutback at the end of a slick move.

Kevin De Bruyne had a big chance before half-time but his close-range effort was saved by Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow.

Jacob Murphy forced a save from Ederson early in the second half before Torres fired in from close range on 55 minutes after a deflection in the Newcastle box.

Substitute Sergio Aguero had an effort cleared off the line late on for Man City, who are up to 26 points thanks to their 12th consecutive home win over the Magpies.

Newcastle remain in 12th place with 18 points.

PSG SACK THOMAS TUCHEL ON CHRISTMAS EVE.

Thomas Tuchel has been sacked by Paris Saint-Germain, according to Sky Germany.

Tuchel joined the club at the beginning of the 2018-19 season, winning back-to-back league titles as well as the Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue in 2020.

PSG are currently third in Ligue 1, a point behind leaders Lyon, and have lost four of their 17 games in the league this season. Tuchel guided the club to their first Champions League final last season.

The 47-year-old was contracted until the end of the current campaign, having signed an extension last May.
