PSG-ISTANBUL BASAKSEHIR GAME SUSPENDED FOLLOWING ALLEGED RACIST TALK BY FOURTH OFFICIAL.

Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League game with Istanbul Basaksehir was suspended on Tuesday and will be completed a day late after both sets of players walked off in protest amid allegations of racism by one of the match officials, in an unprecedented incident in European football’s elite club competition.

The row erupted after Basaksehir assistant coach Pierre Webo, the former Cameroon international, was shown a red card during a fierce row on the touchline with staff from the Turkish club accusing the fourth official, Sebastian Coltescu, of using a racist term.

That led to the game at the Parc des Princes — which started at 9:00 pm local time (2000 GMT) – stopping in the 14th minute while still goalless, with the players walking off around 10 minutes later.

In a statement late on Tuesday UEFA promised to open a “thorough investigation” into the incidents and confirmed the match would restart at 1755 GMT on Wednesday from where it stopped.

European football’s governing body said it had “decided on an exceptional basis to have the remaining minutes of the match played (Wednesday) with a new team of match officials.”

UEFA’s regulations for the Champions League stipulate that, normally, any team refusing to play must forfeit the game and also faces a fine of 250,000 euros ($303,000).

Danny Makkelie of the Netherlands was named as the referee to take over the remainder of the game, with the rest of his team of officials from the Netherlands and Poland.

Television microphones picked up a furious Webo repeatedly asking why a racist term had been used to describe him.

The referee, Ovidiu Hategan, his two assistants and fourth official Coltescu were all from Romania.

In the exchange in question, heard on television and translated by an AFP journalist, Coltescu said: “The black one over there. This is not possible. Go and identify him. That guy, the black one.”

Basaksehir’s Senegal international striker Demba Ba, among the substitutes for the away side, could be clearly heard on television remonstrating with the official, saying in English: “When you mention a white guy, you never say ‘this white guy’, you just say ‘this guy’, so why when you mention a black guy do you say ‘this black guy?'”

The incident sparked a reaction from Turkey’s President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is understood to be closely linked to the owners of the club.

He tweeted to say: “I strongly condemn the racist remarks made to Pierre Webo, member of the Basaksehir technical staff, and am convinced UEFA will take the necessary measures”.

Meanwhile, the president of the Turkish champions said his side refused to restart the game as long as the fourth official was still involved.

“The fourth official used the word ‘negro’ in front of everybody. If the fourth official is removed from the pitch, then we will restart,” Göksel Gümüsdag told Turkish television channel TRT Spor.

Basaksehir responded to the incidents by tweeting “NO TO RACISM #Respect”, along with a photo of UEFA’s anti-racism logo.

The message was retweeted by PSG, who themselves later tweeted their support on their English-language feed.

“All forms of racism go against the values held by Paris Saint-Germain, the club’s Chairman, staff and players,” the French champions said.

Despite the interruption of the match, being played behind closed doors because of the coronavirus pandemic, PSG qualified for the last 16 from Group H after RB Leipzig beat Manchester United 3-2 in Germany.

However, PSG will need to win the game in order to finish on top of the group above Leipzig and thereby secure a potentially easier draw in the next round.

Basaksehir, who are competing in the Champions League group stage for the first time, are already eliminated and will finish bottom.

JORGINHO SCORES EQUALISING PENALTY AS KRASNODAR FORCE THE BLUES TO DEAD RUBBER DRAW.

Jorginho’s penalty salvaged second-string Chelsea a 1-1 draw with Krasnodar in Tuesday’s dead rubber Champions League clash.

Remy Cabella put Krasnodar into the lead at Stamford Bridge, in the final Group E clash that could have no effect on pool standings.

Chelsea hit back without delay though, with Jorginho converting from the spot after Tammy Abraham drew a foul in the box.

Italy midfielder Jorginho held his nerve to slot home his first penalty since missing in the 4-0 win in Krasnodar, in a failure that cost him Chelsea’s main spot-kick duties.

Timo Werner had blasted a late penalty in Russia on October 28 to show Jorginho how it is done, before assuming top spot-kick billing for the Blues.

A much-changed Chelsea laboured throughout a low-key contest with Krasnodar this time around though, with Jorginho’s penalty redemption one of few highlights.

Ultimately the Blues will move on undeterred, with immediate Premier League trips to Everton and Wolves holding far greater significance – and a last-16 Champions League tie to look forward in the new year.

Boss Frank Lampard has repeatedly warned his Chelsea squad they cannot “flick the switch” off and on when it comes to delivering top performances.

However extensive the rotation proves across this hectic festive schedule, Lampard has demanded minimum standards from his players.

This was perhaps the first time that his men failed to meet those requirements – but if there were ever any time to fall short, this was it.

Billy Gilmour impressed, typically mixing tidiness with attacking threat from midfield, while 19-year-old full debutant Tino Anjorin showed encouraging progress.

Chelsea started slowly, especially without the ball.

Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen appeared sluggish, causing problems for their full-backs when Krasnodar attacked at speed.

Viktor Claesson whipped an effort wide when afforded far too much time and space in the box, which yielded a major reprieve for the hosts and that tentative defence.

The Blues failed to heed the lesson though, and Cabella took full advantage.

The former Newcastle midfielder drilled low into the net from another situation where the home defence stood off and watched.

First Christensen left Cesar Azpilicueta exposed down the flank by sitting too deep and narrow, and then the Denmark defender failed to close down Cabella in the box.

The result was the Krasnodar lead, and one that Chelsea could hardly argue against at that point.

The Blues’ sole saving grace of a lacklustre half proved their immediate riposte, as Abraham won a penalty having been fed in the box by Mateo Kovacic.

Jorginho stepped up to take the penalty and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way on a night of missed chances and stifled defending.

RB LEIPZIG SEND MAN UNITED OUT OF UCL WITH SHOCKING WIN.

RB Leipzig sent Manchester United packing from the Champions League with a huge 3-2 win that sees them into the knockout rounds of the Champions League from Group H.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team came into the match needing at least a draw to advance to the round of 16, but were behind within minutes of kickoff after Angelino beat David De Gea with a fine finish at the far post on a counter-attack.

The Bundesliga side doubled their lead shortly after with Angelino becoming provider this time, crossing the ball for Amadou Haidara to smash home a volley and stake Leipzig to a 2-0 lead they would take into the dressing room at half-time.

After the match, Solskjaer told BT Sport: “We started too late. Great spirit and comeback again. It’s different to the Premier League, you can’t give a team a three-goal lead and expect to come back. We were unlucky towards the end and you almost thought it was in at the last minute there.

“Of course you can’t say we were good enough, we weren’t. In a difficult group of course, the big defeat for us was the one away to Istanbul – that’s where we lost the points we should have had.”

United, despite the return of Luke Shaw and keeper De Gea, were vulnerable at the back and had to change their system several times in a desperate effort to stop the onslaught. Their sole threat in the first half came from Mason Greenwood, who had their only shot on target.

Paul Pogba, who had been left on the bench to start the match, came on in the 60th minute for Nemanja Matic as Solskjaer tried to find a way for his team to get back in the match.

Despite the substitution, it was Leipzig who would score again to take a three-goal lead when Justin Kluivert pounced on a loose ball just out of De Gea’s reach and chipped the keeper to pile on to United’s woe.

Looking like they were on their way out of the Champions League, United struck twice in the span of minutes with a Bruno Fernandes penalty and a Pogba header to cut Leipzig’s lead to 3-2.

However, the comeback fell short meaning RB Leipzig are through to the round of 16, while Manchester United were eliminated from the competition.

Solskjaer added: “Today we were close but we knew we had to defend crosses and balls into the box and we just couldn’t clear them.

“As a footballer you can’t feel sorry for yourself. You feel sorry for a few minutes tonight and then we focus on a massive game on Saturday.”

Paris Saint-Germain, whose match on Tuesday was cut short due to an incident on the sidelines, are also through from Group H regardless of the outcome of their match against Istanbul Basaksehir due to a superior head-to-head record against United.

Leipzig could still top the group on 12 points pending the outcome of PSG’s match, which will be resumed on Wednesday at 12:55 p.m. ET in the 13th minute. The Parisians would win the group if they beat Basaksehir.

POGBA’S TIME AT UNITED IS OVER – RAIOLA

Paul Pogba’s career at Manchester United “is over,” according to his agent Mino Raiola.

United have triggered a one-year extension in Pogba contract that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2022 but in an interview with Tuttosport, Raiola has revealed the midfielder has no intention to committing his future to the club and wants to leave in January.

“It’s over between Manchester United and Pogba,” said Raiola in the interview released on Monday.

“No point beating around the bush, it’s better to speak clearly, look forward and not waste time looking for people to blame: Paul is unhappy at Manchester United.

“He is unable to express himself as is expected from him. He needs a change of club; a change of scenery.

“He has a contract which runs out in a year and a half — in the summer of 2022 — but I believe the best solution for everyone is that he leaves in the next transfer window.

“Otherwise, United know well the risk of losing him for nothing, given at the moment the player has no intention of extending his contract. If someone doesn’t understand this, they understand little or nothing about football.

“In any case, they can all blame me if next summer Paul leaves.”

United are likely to be furious with the timing of Raiola’s comments, coming on the eve of their make-or-break Champions League clash with RB Leipzig. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side need at least a draw in Germany to guarantee qualification from Group H but defeat could see them demoted to the Europa League.

Real Madrid and Juventus have both shown interest in Pogba in the past but there are doubts at United about whether either could afford a substantial fee or the 27-year-old’s wages following the impact of coronavirus on football finances across Europe.

BALOTELLI JOINS SERIE B SIDE ON FREE TRANSFER.

Mario Balotelli has joined Italian Serie B side Monza on a free transfer.

The Italian striker has been without a team since leaving relegated Brescia at the end of the 2019-20 campaign.

Ambitious Monza were promoted as Serie C champions last season and are owned by former AC Milan and Italian national Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who signed Balotelli twice for the Rossoneri.

They sit ninth in Serie B and are managed by former Milan midfielder and boss Cristian Brocchi. Among his teammates at Monza, Balotelli will find Kevin-Prince Boateng and Gabriel Paletta, who he played alongside at Milan.

Balotelli started his career at Inter Milan, where he won the the Serie A title three years in a row as well as the Coppa Italia and Champions League in 2010 as part of the Treble. He also won the Golden Boy award as Europe’s best young player that year.

That summer, he joined Manchester City and won the FA Cup and Premier League title before joining Milan and returning to the Premier League with Liverpool.

Following a season at Anfield, he once again joined Milan on loan before he moved to Nice in 2016. Following a short stint at Marseille, he returned to Italy with hometown club Brescia, but could not stop them from being relegated.

BRIGHTON 1-2 SOTON: INGS RETURN TO FIRE SAINTS TO FIFTH ON THE LOG.

Fit-again Danny Ings comes off the bench to score a late penalty as Saints hit back to defeat Brighton

A late penalty by returning striker Danny Ings put Southampton in fifth place thanks to a 2-1 comeback win at Brighton & Hove Albion.

The home side took the lead on 26 minutes after James Ward-Prowse was penalised for handball and Pascal Gross coolly converted the resulting penalty.

But Saints were level on the stroke of half-time when Jannik Vestergaard’s leap allowed him to direct a brilliant header beyond Mat Ryan in the Brighton goal.

Theo Walcott flashed a fine effort wide before a smart bit of skill by Ings created a chance for Nathan Redmond, whose effort flew over the crossbar.

With time running out, Vestergaard’s pass found Kyle Walker-Peters who was brought down by Solly March.

A VAR check concluded that March had committed the foul in the area and Ings converted from the spot on 81 minutes for his sixth goal of the season.

Southampton are fifth on 20 points, one behind fourth-placed Leicester, while Brighton stay 16th on 10 points.

LIV 4-0 WOL: LIVERPOOL GIVE NEWLY RETURNED FANS GRAND WELCOME AS THEY GO JOINT TOP WITH SPURS.

Liverpool celebrated the return of fans to Anfield with a comfortable 4-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers to go second in the table.

The Reds took the lead in the 24th minute, when Mohamed Salah pounced on a mistake by Wolves defender Conor Coady.

Coady thought he had won a penalty just before the break but referee Craig Pawson reversed his decision after going to the Referee Review Area.

Georginio Wijnaldum scored the second with a superb 58th minute strike into the top corner before Joel Matip headed home a Salah cross to make it 3-0 in the 67th minute.

Soon afterwards Trent Alexander-Arnold returned to action as a substitute and it was his fine cross that led to Nelson Semedo turning the ball into his own net.

Wolves’ best chance came early on when Daniel Podence forced Premier League debutant goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher to tip away his shot.

Liverpool are behind leaders Tottenham Hotspur on goal difference, while Wolves stay 10th on 17 points.

SHU 1-2 : LEI: VARDY SNATCHES LATE WIN TO WORSEN THE BLADES’ START TO THE SEASON.

Jamie Vardy’s 90th minute strike earned Leicester City a 2-1 victory at Sheffield United.

Vardy thumped an early effort against a post before Leicester took the lead on 24 minutes through Ayoze Perez, who reacted quickest when Marc Albrighton’s shot was blocked.

That advantage only lasted two minutes, with Oli McBurnie heading in from John Lundstram’s corner.

James Maddison hit the same post as Vardy shortly before half-time.

McBurnie came close to scoring another header on 66 minutes and then Kelechi Iheanacho was thwarted by Ramsdale.

Vardy claimed the three points late on when he slotted in from Maddison’s through-ball.

The result moves Leicester up to third, with Liverpool behind them on goal difference before their home match against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday night.
