CHELSEA SECURES SEMI-FINAL FIRST LEG DRAW AT REAL MADRID

Christian Pulisic’s fine strike handed Chelsea a 1-1 Champions League semi-final first leg draw at Real Madrid on a sodden night where Timo Werner spurned two gilt-edged chances.

Karim Benzema’s peerless exhibition of clinical marksmanship rescued the draw for a Real side muddled by a change of formation and the Blues’ technical and tactical acumen.

Pulisic became the first man to score past former Chelsea stopper Thibaut Courtois in six hours and 44 minutes, as the Blues enjoyed a stellar opening.

Werner’s flimsy finish allowed Courtois to produce a short-range save when the Germany forward should have powered into the net.

And the ex-RB Leipzig striker was unable to convert another big opening, failing to connect with Pulisic’s cross at Madrid’s Alfredo Di Stefano training ground stadium.

Chelsea will still occupy the box seat for the return leg at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, May 5, with Thomas Tuchel’s men producing another hugely impressive performance.

But despite boasting that potentially pivotal away goal, the west Londoners will be forgiven for wondering what might have been had Werner netted one or both of his prime chances.

Madrid paid the price for a quizzical switch to three at the back straight from the off.

Werner should have scored before the game had even settled, but instead he side-footed straight at Courtois.

Pulisic’s unselfish header across goal begged to be blasted into the net, but Werner’s tentative effort handed the ex-Chelsea keeper the chance to parry clear.

Pulisic was in no mood to waste an opening however, and his decisive strike put the Blues 1-0 up in the 14th minute.

Antonio Rudiger’s sumptuous lofted ball caught Real out at the back, allowing Pulisic to spring whatever offside trap there was and power into the box.

The USA forward stayed calm as Courtois raced out, stepping round the keeper before powering home.

So poor were Madrid that Chelsea were able to canter into the final third almost at will once past the hosts’ porous midfield three.

Benzema produced the first threat for Real however, thundering a 20-yard effort against a post.

And the French striker then conjured an equaliser of the highest quality just before the half hour, cushioning a header to himself six yards out – then flashing a snap volley past the helpless Edouard Mendy.

With Chelsea’s scoreboard dominance cancelled out in one stellar moment, Tuchel’s unperturbed men set about taking the game to Madrid once more.

Had Werner connected with Pulisic’s teasing cross, Chelsea would have taken the lead again.

The Germany forward still found time to screw a shot wide of the near post when Mason Mount was lurking in the centre of the box.

And so the scores stayed locked at 1-1 at the break, with both sides showing signs of fatigue in a circumspect third quarter.

Marcelo’s yellow card for a professional foul on the marauding Pulisic just past the hour allowed Madrid to send in ex-Chelsea talisman Hazard, on for Vinicius Junior.

Chelsea sent Reece James, Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz into the fray, with both managers determined to wrestle control of the tie.

Real switched to a back four for the closing 15 minutes and were almost caught out straight away, with Raphael Varane felling Havertz and earning a yellow card for his troubles.

Ziyech angled the resulting free-kick on goal, but Courtois comfortably gloved the effort.

UEFA SET TO ALLOW LARGER SQUADS AT EURO 2020

UEFA’s national team’s committee has recommended that squad sizes for teams competing at this summer’s Euro 2020 be increased to 26.

Normally squad sizes for the European Championship would be 23 but the expansion looks set to get the go-ahead due to pressures on players caused by condensed seasons amid the pandemic.

England manager Gareth Southgate has been in attendance at Premier League games, watching players close-up, throughout the season but speaking last month he expressed his opposition to proposals that larger squads would be allowed.

“I know there is some discussion about perhaps an extended number in the squad. I am not certain I’m behind that,” said Southgate.

“Covid could play a part but there is a skill to picking 23 and it means you’ve got to make good decisions and important decisions.

“Some of that can be lost as you get an extended group so let’s see how that develops but I’m not 100 per cent for that, I have to say.”

All of the clubs around Europe had a shortened pre-season while they have had to fit as many games into a shortened amount of time.

The UEFA national team’s competitions committee met on Monday to discuss the squad expansion proposals and their decision still needs to be approved by the governing body’s executive committee.

As well as having a larger squad to choose from, national team bosses will also be permitted to make five substitutions during a match rather than the standard three.

The tournament will begin on 11 June but as was confirmed last week, the four matches due to take place in Dublin have been moved after the Irish government failed to give guarantees over fan attendance numbers.

The matches that were due to take place in Dublin have been moved to St Petersburg and London.

BAYERN MUNICH CONFIRM APPOINTMENT OF SPURS TARGET JULIAN NAGELSMANN AS NEW MANAGER

Bayern Munich have announced the appointment of 33-year-old Julian Nagelsmann as their new head coach on a five-year contract.

RB Leipzig boss Nagelsmann had been considered as a target for Tottenham Hotspur following last week’s sacking of Jose Mourinho, but the former Hoffenheim coach has opted to stay in Germany and move to the record 30-times Bundesliga title winners.

Bayern boss Hansi Flick, who won the Champions League last season, had asked to be released from his contract, and is expected to take over from Joachim Low as the new Germany boss after this summer’s European Championships.

Bayern said in a statement: “FC Bayern have appointed Julian Nagelsmann as their new head coach.

“The Bavarian-born 33-year-old will move to Munich from RB Leipzig on 1 July 2021 ahead of the new season, signing a five-year-contract with the German record champions until 30 June 2026.

“This comes after FC Bayern agreed to current head coach Hansi Flick’s request to have his contract terminated on 30 June 2021, two years earlier than its original expiry date.”

Nagelsmann had coached Leipzig for the past two seasons, and challenged Bayern in this season’s title race before the Bavarians pulled away at the top.

Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff said “After there had been a lot of movement over the past few days regarding the coaching position at FC Bayern Munich for the new season, Julian Nagelsmann approached us and told us in open discussions that it was a lifelong dream for him, FC Bayern coach and he would like to move to Munich if the opportunity arises after the end of this season.

“Julian took a fantastic path in Leipzig and developed our club very successfully. Not only did he make our players better, but he also took the team to the next level as a collective.”

ZLATAN BEING INVESTIGATED BY UEFA OVER ALLEGED STAKE IN BETTING COMPANY

UEFA has launched a disciplinary investigation into Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s alleged part-ownership of a betting company.

European football’s governing body has appointed an ethics and disciplinary inspector to establish whether Ibrahimovic has violated any of its betting regulations.

The Sweden and AC Milan striker, 39, reportedly owns a 10 per cent stake in Bethard, a Malta-based gambling website, through his company Unknown AB.

A UEFA statement read: “In accordance with Article 31(4) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations (DR), a UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has today been appointed to conduct a disciplinary investigation regarding a potential violation of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations by Mr. Zlatan Ibrahimovic for having an alleged financial interest in a betting company.

“Further information regarding this matter will be made available in due course.”

UEFA and FIFA rules do not allow players to participate in any of its competitions if they have financial interests in gambling companies.

Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reported earlier this month that Ibrahimovic retains his financial interest in Bethard after becoming a part-owner in 2018.

According to FIFA regulations the former Manchester United forward could be suspended from football for up to three years and fined up to £86,000. UEFA’s possible sanctions are less clear.

Aftonbladet claimed Ibrahimovic breached FIFA rules when stepping out of international retirement to play for Sweden in World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and Kosovo in March this year.

He is also alleged to have breached UEFA rules when featuring for AC Milan in their Europa League tie against Shamrock Rovers in September last year.

Ibrahimovic signed a new one-year contract with AC Milan last week that will keep him at the Italian club beyond his 40th birthday.

He is in his second spell at Milan – his former clubs include Ajax, Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona, Paris St Germain, Manchester United and LA Galaxy – and has scored 17 goals in 27 appearances for the Serie A giants in all competitions this season

SPOTIFY FOUNDER SEEKING $4 BILLION ARSENAL TAKE OVER

Spotify founder Daniel Ek is mulling over a takeover bid for Arsenal which could reportedly also involve former players Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Patrick Vieira.

Owned by American billionaire Stan Kroenke, Arsenal were one of six Premier League clubs to sign up for a breakaway European Super League last week before quickly withdrawing from the process.

That led to new protests against Kroenke’s ownership, with thousands of supporters marching on the Emirates Stadium ahead of Friday’s Premier League defeat to Everton.

Just before kick-off, Swedish billionaire Ek sent a tweet saying he would be interested in purchasing the club should Kroenke be willing to sell.

It was then reported on Monday that Ek, 38, had begun to make inquiries over the weekend into the viability of a takeover bid and that Henry, Bergkamp and Vieira were all on board as part of his plan.

Kroenke is thought to want at least $3.85 billion if he is to consider selling the club he has run since April 2011.

Any deal may be extremely difficult to do given Josh Kroenke, the club director and Stan Kroenke’s son, reinforced at a fans’ forum last week that his family have “no intention” of walking away.

“I still believe we’re fit to carry on in our positions as custodians of Arsenal,” he said, pledging to build trust between the ownership and support.

SERIE A CLUBS TO FACE BAN IF THEY RESURRECT PLANS FOR BREAKAWAY LEAGUE

Italian clubs wishing to participate in a breakaway Super League would be barred from playing in Serie A under new rules set to come into force this summer.

Three of the country’s biggest clubs – Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan — were among the 12 sides who announced on April 18th they were forming a new competition.

The breakaway league collapsed within 72 hours after the six English sides withdrew.

The British government was credited by UEFA with playing a key role in persuading the Premier League clubs to back down.

However, on Monday Downing Street denied reports the UK prime minister, Boris Johnson, spoke to Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward about the Super League and had given him the impression he would back it when they briefly met on April 14th.

Football authorities at national and continental level are looking at ways to strengthen their rulebooks to prevent a renewed breakaway attempt, and the federal council of the Italian football federation (FIGC) has moved quickly to approve new licensing rules.

“Those who plan to participate in competitions not authorised by the FIGC, FIFA or UEFA will lose their membership,” the Italian federation’s president, Gabriele Gravina, told its official website, figc.it.

He added: “It is clear that if, on June 21, the deadline for registration applications, someone wants to participate in competitions of a private nature, they will not take part in our championship.”

In England, Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham has warned “nothing is off the table” as it seeks to prevent any fresh attempt at a breakaway.

It is believed the game’s authorities would prefer to avoid sanctions which punish supporters of the clubs involved, after those fans were credited with forcing the withdrawals that happened on Tuesday and the early hours of Wednesday.

The British government has promised support to the football authorities in strengthening anti-competition regulation against any future breakaway attempts.

Johnson was understood to have promised in a meeting on Tuesday — before the withdrawals began — that he would drop a “legislative bomb” on the clubs if they pressed ahead with their plans.

There were concerns among leading figures in the game about how successful any attempt to block a breakaway would have been within existing competition law, so the game’s authorities are still hoping updated legislation can be brought forward.

Johnson’s official spokesman has insisted that neither Johnson nor his chief of staff Dan Rosenfield spoke to Woodward about the Super League when the Red Devils executive visited Downing Street four days before the breakaway competition was launched.

The Sunday Times reported that the prime minister may have given Woodward — who has since confirmed he will step down from his position at the end of the year — the impression he would back the controversial move.

Asked about Johnson’s talks with Woodward, the official spokesman said on Monday: “There was a very brief introduction to Ed Woodward, I think they crossed paths.

“But the European Super League was not discussed.”

Pressed on whether Rosenfield told Woodward the government would not oppose the new venture, the number 10 spokesman said: “No, that’s not correct.

“The meeting was to discuss the safe return of fans and Covid certification as part of the events pilot work.”

KELECHI IHEANACHO STARS AGAIN AS LEICESTER DO A COME BACK WIN AGAINST CRYSTAL PALACE

Leicester closed in on a Champions League return after red-hot Kelechi Iheanacho struck again to beat Crystal Palace.

The forward’s late winner – his 14th goal in 14 games – clinched a 2-1 victory to leave the Foxes three wins away from booking a top-four spot.

Timothy Castagne had earlier cancelled out Wilfried Zaha’s opener as the Foxes, who sit third in the Premier League, were forced to dig deep.

They moved seven points clear of fifth-placed West Ham with five games remaining and tantalisingly close to Europe’s top table.

Inconsistent Palace, with no immediate threat of relegation, gave the Foxes a fright but are destined to finish in mid-table.

They were immediately on the back foot at the King Power Stadium when Iheanacho’s pinpoint pass found Jamie Vardy, who ran out of room trying to round Vicente Guaita

The former England striker was also thwarted by Cheikhou Kouyate and fired over inside the first 10 minutes and would have been encouraged by the ease with which he found space.

Yet the Foxes found themselves behind from Palace’s first attack after 12 minutes.

Christian Benteke left Youri Tielemans in a heap in midfield and Leicester were suddenly exposed. Ebere Eze’s inch-perfect pass slipped Zaha in and the forward beat Kasper Schmeichel for his 10th top-flight goal of the season.

A home defeat to Palace was not in Leicester’s script as they aim to return to the Champions League after a four-year absence but the early gaps in the Eagles’ defence disappeared.

Palace closed ranks and dished out some thunderous challenges, especially on James Maddison and Iheanacho.

Caglar Soyuncu lashed over but Leicester were out of sync, missing the spark which has kept them in the top four all season, and Maddison’s shot which went for a throw summed up their struggles.

They reached the break behind but their recovery began after just five minutes of the second half.

Tielemans’ ball found Iheanacho and he held off Kouyate to tee up Castagne, who fired in high past Guaita from 10 yards.

Yet the Foxes needed Jonny Evans to keep them level just six minutes later.

Zaha put Jairo Riedewald clean through and he drew Schmeichel before passing across to Benteke – only for Evans’ brilliant last-ditch tackle to deny the striker a tap-in.

Leicester, though, began to regain some swagger and Maddison and Vardy shot at Guaita, while Vardy’s celebrations were quickly cut short by an offside flag after he turned in with 20 minutes left.

Just before, Benteke headed Eze’s corner straight at Schmeichel but Vardy went closer to a winner 13 minutes from time when he swapped passes with Iheanacho and fired across goal.

Tielemans shot wide but Leicester finally got the winner they had threatened with 10 minutes left.

Almost inevitably it was in-form Iheanacho and, when the striker collected Evans’ deep pass, he held off Patrick Van Aanholt, cut inside Scott Dann and lashed into the roof of the net.

BLOW FOR SPURS AS MUNICH OPEN TALKS WITH NAGELSMANN

Tottenham have been dealt a blow in their hunt for a new manager, with the Independent reporting Bayern Munich have opened talks to hire RB Leipzig’s Julian Nagelsmann.

Spurs bosses had been said to have earmarked the 33-year-old as an ideal replacement for Jose Mourinho, but they may now need to turn their attention elsewhere.

Their solution may actually be closer to home, with Leicester’s Brendan Rodgers also being linked with the role.

The Daily Star, citing 90min, says Rodgers is high on Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy’s radar, but Leicester are believed to be willing to match or better any potential offer in order to keep the Northern Irishman at the King Power Stadium.

WESTHAM TO APPEAL FABIAN BALBUENA’S CONTROVERSIAL RED CARD

West Ham are to appeal the controversial red card shown to defender Fabian Balbuena against Chelsea on Saturday.

Balbuena was sent off by referee Chris Kavanagh after he caught Blues full-back Ben Chilwell with his studs as he cleared the ball upfield.

Kavanagh did not initially blow for a foul but the incident was brought to his attention by VAR.

The official reviewed the footage on the pitchside monitor and then decided to show a straight red card to the Paraguayan centre-back.

Hammers manager David Moyes called the decision “rank, rotten” after his side’s 1-0 defeat by their top-four rivals.

SHEARER AND HENRY INDUCTED INTO THE PREMIER LEAGUE HALL OF FAME

Premier League record goalscorer Alan Shearer and four-time Premier League Golden Boot winner Thierry Henry have today been announced as the first two players to be named in the official Premier League Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame recognises and celebrates the exceptional skill and talent of individuals who have graced the Premier League since its inception in 1992. It is the highest individual honour awarded to players by the League.

Shearer has been inducted as the League’s all-time top scorer, having netted 260 goals across 14 Premier League seasons.

The striker was the first player to reach a century of PL goals, scoring 112 times in only 138 matches for Blackburn Rovers, as well as winning the Premier League title with them in the 1994/95 season.

Following a world-record transfer to boyhood club Newcastle United in 1996, Shearer scored 148 goals in 303 Premier League matches during a 10-season spell for the Magpies. He is a three-time Golden Boot winner and remains the only player to have reached 100 goals in the competition for two different clubs.

Speaking of his induction into the Hall of Fame, Shearer said: “When you look at some of the unbelievable players to have graced the Premier League – week in, week out, year in, year out – I feel very honoured to join the Hall of Fame. I have to thank all of my team-mates, as well as the managers and coaches that I’ve worked with.

“All I ever wanted to be was a professional footballer. It was my dream to do that, my dream to win trophies and my dream to score at St James’ Park, to wear the number nine black-and-white shirt and it was fantastic. I enjoyed every minute of it.”

Henry won the Golden Boot award four times and scored a club-record 175 Premier League goals in 258 matches for Arsenal.

He netted more than 20 Premier League goals in five consecutive seasons between 2001/02 and 2005/06.

Following his move to Arsenal in 1999, Henry won the Premier League title twice and was a key member of the “Invincibles” team who went unbeaten during the 2003/04 title-winning campaign.

Along with his scoring prowess, Henry contributed 74 assists during eight Premier League seasons, including a joint-record 20 in 2002/03.

Henry said: “To be inducted alongside Alan Shearer as the two first inductees into the Premier League Hall of Fame is more than special.

“When I was young, I was just trying to make sure I could get a pair of boots and now we’re talking about the Hall of Fame. During my career I wanted to play hard and make sure I was fighting for the cause, because that’s all the fans want to see.

“If you asked me at the start of my career about entering the Hall of Fame, I wouldn’t have believed you. It’s an amazing honour.”

Shearer and Henry will feature in a special television programme, which will be broadcast at 18:00 BST this evening on Sky Sports Premier League in the UK, Premier League digital channels and around the world via the Premier League’s international broadcast partners.

Kelly Cates will interview the two icons as they look back on their Premier League careers, with some special guests also making an appearance.

A shortlist of 23 additional nominees eligible to join the Premier League Hall of Fame in 2021 will be announced during the show, with fans invited to cast their vote from 19:00 BST and help select the remaining six inductees to the 2021 Premier League Hall of Fame.
