HANSI FLICK TO TAKE OVER GERMANY NATIONAL TEAM

Hansi Flick will leave Bayern Munich in the summer to take over from Joachim Low as coach of the Germany national team, Lothar Matthaus has said.

Flick has steered Bayern to success after success since taking over from Niko Kovac in November 2019, winning six trophies in 18 months in Bavaria.

Last month it was announced that Joachim Low will step down from his role as Germany head coach following Euro 2020 after asking to end his contract early, and Flick has been one of the names mentioned as a potential successor.

Speaking to Sky in Germany, Matthaus believes that Bayern’s Champions League exit at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain will persuade Flick to be the one to take over from Low.

“I already said two weeks ago that in my opinion, this is Hansi Flick’s last season,” he said. “I’ve said that Hansi Flick is right at the top of the DFB [German Football Federation] list, and then nothing else for a long time. There’s an offer from the DFB, yes.

“So, they want Hansi Flick and I think – or rather, I’m convinced – that Hansi Flick will no longer be Bayern coach after this season.

“That means the last game against Augsburg at home will be Hansi Flick’s last game as head coach of Bayern.”

And, according to former defender Matthaus, Bayern is already planning for Flick’s successor, with RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann identified as the man they want to come in.

EX-FOOTBALLER JAILED FOR MOVING HEROINE

A former professional footballer who was caught moving over €2.7m of heroin has been jailed for four years.

Keith Quinn (32) received a package containing the heroin at his place of work in an industrial estate in west Dublin.

Soon afterwards he met with another man and then delivered the package to a nearby address.

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that Quinn, who was previously a professional footballer with Sheffield United and several League of Ireland clubs, had “a very significant gambling problem” and that there was “a hold over him” due to debts he had accrued.

Quinn, of Monastery Gate Avenue, Clondalkin, Dublin, pleaded guilty to possession of heroin for sale or supply at Rosemount Business Park, Dublin 11, on August 5, 2020. He has four previous convictions for minor road traffic offences.

Alan Quinn (41), the accused’s older brother and a former footballer for the Irish national team, gave evidence before the court that his brother had a good upbringing and none of the family has any convictions.

Mr Quinn said he did not condone what his brother did, but he does not think his brother “is a bad lad”. He said his brother is not a drug dealer and he deserves a second chance.

Passing sentence yesterday, Judge Pauline Codd sentenced Quinn to seven and a half years imprisonment.

She suspended the final three and a half years of the sentence on strict conditions, including that he undergo residential treatment for gambling addiction, if deemed appropriate by the Probation Service.

Detective Garda Liam Aherne told John Berry BL, prosecuting, that in August 2020, police authorities in the UK became suspicious of a package travelling through the UK which had been sent from the Netherlands and had a final destination in Ireland.

Det Gda Aherne said UK police opened the package and determined that it contained heroin before contacting gardaí.

An operation was put in place to continue the delivery and on the date in question a detective dressed in a UPS uniform delivered the package to the accused’s work address in the Dublin industrial estate.

The package, which was had the name “Keith” on the address label, was given to Quinn who sent a photo of it to his co-accused. He received a text back saying: “Do nothing until I get there”.

Quinn put the package in his car and drove alongside the co-accused in a separate car to another part of the industrial estate. Quinn entered a premises on his own and then came out without the package.

He and his co-accused were arrested shortly thereafter and the package was recovered. The total value of the heroin was €2,769,130.

In interview with gardaí, Quinn claimed that he knew “nothing suspicious” about the package and that he thought it might contain medicine for his daughter.

He told gardaí that he had a gambling problem and had split up with the mother of his child because of this.

Quinn told gardaí that sending the photo of the package to his co-accused was something he would do on a routine basis.

Mr Berry told the court that it was the prosecution’s case that there was “a pattern of communication” between the two.

Quinn’s siblings include former Ireland international footballers Alan Quinn and Stephen Quinn.

He was signed to the Sheffield United academy and was given a professional contract at the age of 18, but he returned to Ireland following the death of his mother.

Det Gda Aherne agreed that Quinn is “deeply ashamed” of his actions and that his involvement was out of “stupidity” rather than “inherent badness”.

LUKA MODRIC WOULD PREFER TO FACE THE ‘AMAZING’ ANFIELD ATMOSPHERE

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric would rather face Liverpool in front of a full crowd even though he knows the power of Anfield.

The Croatia international has experienced the atmosphere both with Tottenham and Real, with his last visit in 2014 finishing in a 3-0 victory for the LaLiga side in their Champions League group game.

Wednesday’s situation will be vastly different as the ground will remain empty and Modric admits that will be disappointing, even if it would offer an advantage for the hosts as they seek to overturn a 3-1 deficit from the first leg of their quarter-final.

“We are in a situation everyone knows we are living in at the moment. Hopefully this will change quickly,” he said.

“To be honest I would prefer to play at Anfield with the crowd because of the atmosphere here.

“I played a few times with Tottenham, we played that game with Real and the atmosphere was amazing. Everyone wants to play with fans, with the crowd.

“That’s why we are not thinking about if there is a crowd or not or if there is an advantage for us or not.

“It’s a situation that we are in and we need to do the best we can in the circumstances we are in.”

Real’s injury problems have got worse since the first leg as Lucas Vazquez has been sidelined with a knee problem, joining fellow defenders Sergio Ramos (calf), Dani Carvajal (hamstring) and Raphael Varane (Covid-19) and forward Eden Hazard (muscle) on the absentee list.

However, coach Zinedine Zidane refused to allow it to be considered a weakness as his fit players become overstretched.

“We are going to try to manage our strengths, manage our injuries. We are always going to go out and try to win the game,” he said.

“There are challenges and difficulties. You grow stronger as a team and become more united. That is one of the qualities this team has.

“It is true a lot has happened to this team this season. I’d love to have everyone available but we have everyone who is here and they are the ones who count tomorrow.

“We will need to compete, defend well and attack when we get the chance. We are very prepared to face up to this game.”

LIVERPOOL MUST BE NEAR PERFECT TO BEAT REAL MADRID – ROBERTSON

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson insists the players are determined to prolong their Champions League season despite few people giving them a chance of making the semi-finals after their woeful first-leg performance against Real Madrid.

Jurgen Klopp’s side trail 3-1 heading into the second leg at Anfield, which devoid of fans will not be able to provide the backdrop for another potential comeback like the one famously fashioned against Barcelona two years ago.

Robertson believes the task that awaits them on Wednesday is equal to that which faced them after losing 3-0 to Lionel Messi-inspired opponents in the Nou Camp, when supporters played their part in the 4-0 home win.

“They are both as hard, and are different but same in their own way,” said the Scotland captain.

“Barcelona that night was obviously an incredible night and wouldn’t have been possible without fans in there.

“The fans made us feel 10 feet tall and believe even more. We felt before that game we could overturn it.

“Walking out in front of 55,000 other people who believed gave that extra five or 10% which makes a huge difference. Unfortunately tomorrow night we won’t have that.

“We are coming up against the team that is the most experienced in this tournament and won it the most times (13) in the short history and long history. They are a fantastic team full of quality.

“It’s a big task for us and isn’t the same as the Barcelona game. We can’t rely on the fact we came back in that game that we are going to come back in this one.

“People have maybe written us off but we believe we can put in a better performance than last week and that’s the only way to give us a fighting chance.

“We believe we can win the game. If we do that it gives us a fighting chance; let’s see if it’s enough on the night. Fingers crossed it will be.

“Our determination is to take our chances, keep a clean sheet and make it as uncomfortable for them as possible.

“It needs to be a close-to-perfect game. We’ve done it in the past but we can’t rely on that. It’s up to us to create a Champions League night at Anfield without the fans.”

Klopp does not believe it is possible for his players to perform as badly as they did in Madrid last week, where they were lucky to get in at half-time only 2-0 down after a first half in which every player was off their game.

Mohamed Salah’s 26th goal in 44 Champions League matches for the club briefly gave them hope before more bad defending allowed Vinicius Junior to score his second of the night.

“It was (a feeling) of disappointment, of course it was – nobody hid away from that, the performance wasn’t on the level it should be,” added Robertson.

“We gave away three cheap goals, that probably could have been avoided and we got an away goal which was the only bonus of that night.

“We have given ourselves a chance, we are still in the tie, we are still in the competition.

“We need to be better at everything we do tomorrow night. We need to put pressure on an unbelievable, experienced team and try to make it uncomfortable for them.

“If we can do that and take chances, let’s see where it can take us.”

CHELSEA RESIST PORTO TO REACH UCL SEMI-FINALS

N’Golo Kante’s tireless midfield performance steered Chelsea to a first Champions League semi-final in seven years despite the Blues’ 1-0 quarter-final second-leg loss to Porto.

Mehdi Taremi’s stunning overhead kick in second-half added time put the squeeze on Chelsea, but the Blues still progressed to the semi-finals 2-1 on aggregate.

They will now meet either Real Madrid or Liverpool in their first semi-final since losing out to Atletico Madrid in 2014.

Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell’s first-leg goals proved decisive in the end, with Chelsea coasting for much of Tuesday’s second leg in Seville.

Taremi’s late acrobatics planted a seed of doubt, but Porto produced too little, too late – and Chelsea deservedly moved into the last four.

France World Cup-winner Kante was not even meant to start in Spain, but was pressed into last-minute service after a minor injury to Mateo Kovacic.

Kante has only just shaken off his latest hamstring injury and boss Thomas Tuchel wanted him to feature off the bench at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.

The 30-year-old midfielder cemented Chelsea’s dominance in the tie with a stunning showing at both ends of the pitch, in a performance to delight the regimented Blues.

Tuchel’s men are now able to jet back to London and turn immediate attentions to Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City and former Paris St Germain manager Tuchel’s first concern will be to gauge whether linchpin midfielder Kante is capable of starting at Wembley.

The Blues will desperately want Kante to start against Pep Guardiola’s quadruple chasing City, and will doubtless pull out all the stops to make that happen.

Chelsea ground through a staccato first-half, punctuated by incessant stoppages for fouls.

The beauty of their two-goal advantage meant the Blues were fully entitled to take a measured approach to this encounter.

Edouard Mendy messed up his measurements in a rare misjudgment to hand the Blues a scare, but Jesus Corona wasted the Senegal stopper’s misplaced pass.

Corona collected and eyed up Mendy’s goal, only to scuff wide in a disappointing effort for the Portuguese.

Porto pressed the Blues high in a way Conceicao’s men had oddly opted not to in the first leg. So where the Stamford Bridge men had endless time to build in that 2-0 win first time out, here they were harassed and harried.

The Blues might have been ruffled but they always just about managed to straighten themselves out. Corona flashed high and wide after sneaking in behind Ben Chilwell, to leave Porto frustrated again.

But Mount saw a rasping effort deflected wide by Chancel Mbemba after a good Christian Pulisic raid. And Kante sent Havertz haring through only for the German to be denied twice.

The Blues were by far the happier to turn around with the game still goalless.

Pulisic should have tapped Chelsea into the lead in the second-half’s first meaningful action. Chilwell’s cutback was begging to be slotted home, but Pulisic was just unable to shift his feet and failed to make enough connection to guide the ball into the net.

Kante slid through a fine ball for Mount after Pulisic’s neat spin, but Manafa blocked the England forward’s shot.

Porto threw on dangerman striker Taremi on the hour and the Iran striker forced Mendy into a smart save from a powerful header.

Pulisic raced through for an added-time chance, but could only strike straight at the advancing Agustin Marchesin.

Chelsea were already planning the rest of their busy week when Taremi flicked home from a superb overhead kick.

But Porto could not find another dramatic comeback and Tuchel’s men rightly move through.

HOLDERS BAYERN MUNICH OUT OF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE DESPITE WIN IN PARIS

Paris St Germain knocked holders Bayern Munich out of the Champions League on away goals despite losing the second leg of their quarter-final 1-0 at Parc des Princes.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men had edged a thrilling first-leg clash 3-2 in Munich, and saw Neymar denied by the woodwork twice before Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting bundled the Germans in front on the night with a close-range header just before half-time.

Bayern, though, could not find another away goal as the Ligue 1 side, who had Mbappe’s late effort ruled out for offside, progressed to the semi-finals.

Mbappe, who had scored twice in the first leg, forced an early chance when he drilled a low shot across the face of goal after being played in by Neymar down the right.

The France forward then saw a low cross deflected through to Neymar, but his effort was blocked by goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Bayern, again without injured Poland forward Robert Lewandowski, finally threatened at the other end when Leroy Sane curled an effort wide before Joshua Kimmich drilled a low shot wide.

PSG, beaten by Bayern in the final of last season’s rescheduled tournament, were soon back on the offensive as Mbappe got away down the left to pick out Neymar.

Neuer, though, again showed quick reactions to close the angle and make a block.

Neymar then almost crafted the opening goal in the 37th minute when a clever drag back turned past Kingsley Coman on the edge of the Bayern penalty area and his curling shot dropped onto the crossbar.

Amazingly the Brazil forward was again denied by the woodwork just moments later after being played in by Mbappe when his shot came back off the post.

Bayern rode their luck and went straight up the other end to break the deadlock five minutes before half-time.

Coman’s run found David Alaba in the PSG penalty area, and his low shot was saved by Keylor Navas.

However, the ball spun back up into the air and Choupo-Moting held off PSG defender Presnel Kimpembe to nod in from close range.

Navas then redeemed himself to deny Alaba, whose left-foot drive appeared destined for the top-left corner, before Sane shot straight at the PSG keeper shortly ahead of half-time.

PSG went on the offensive again at the start of the second half, Neymar’s half-volley dipping over before Angel Di Maria’s sent a dangerous low cross through the Bayern six-yard box.

With time running out for the holders, Thomas Muller forced a decent stop from Navas after being played clear by Sane.

Mbappe thought he had put the tie to bed when he broke clear into the Bayern half to fire the ball past Neuer into the top corner, but was correctly ruled offside.

Bayern continued to throw everything forward, leaving themselves vulnerable on the break, but could not force any late drama as Sane’s low cross into the six-yard box was smothered by Navas.

WOLVES FORWARD, PEDRO NETO OUT FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON DUE TO KNEE INJURY

Wolves forward Pedro Neto will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury which will almost certainly rule him out of Euro 2021.

The Portugal international will have surgery later this week on a damaged patella which forced him off in the first half of Friday’s victory at Fulham.

After consultation with a knee specialist in London, Wolves do not expect the 21-year-old to return until next season.

“Pedro Neto suffered a significant injury to his patella during the match against Fulham and, following a review with a knee specialist in London at the weekend, surgery has been planned for later this week,” said a statement from the Premier League.

“Unfortunately he is not expected to return to play until next season.”

Wolves defender Jonny will also have surgery this week to repair damage to the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his right knee.

The 27-year-old Spaniard was injured in training last week, having only returned to action in February after a knee operation back in August.

“Jonny saw a specialist for his knee ligament injury, and his surgery is also planned for later this week,” added the statement.

No return date has yet been set for defender Fernando Marcal, who is “making good progress” after groin surgery in February.

Wolves also announced midfielder Ruben Neves, who played in Friday’s match, has tested positive for coronavirus and is in self-isolation.

LA LIGA: ATLETICO STILL ON TOP DESPITE BEING HELD BY REAL BETIS

Atletico Madrid returned to the top of La Liga with a 1-1 draw away to Real Betis on Sunday but did so at the expense of losing yet more players to injury, leaving their title hopes hanging by a thread.

Diego Simeone’s side got off to an ideal start when Yannick Carrasco dribbled into an empty net in the fifth minute thanks to a lucky bounce but Betis levelled with a thumping volley from Cristian Tello in the 20th.

Atletico then lost record signing Joao Felix plus right back Kieran Trippier to injury in the second half, adding to an absentee list also containing Luis Suarez, Thomas Lemar and latest signing Moussa Dembele.

They were fortunate to avoid conceding again as Betis dominated the second half and missed several chances to take the lead.

Yet Atletico were not far from snatching a winner, striker Angel Correa forcing two fine saves from Claudio Bravo in stoppage time.

Atletico returned to the summit on 67 points, one ahead of Real Madrid and two clear of Barcelona with eight games remaining. (Reporting by Richard Martin Editing by Christian Radnedge)

LACAZETTE STARS AS ARSENAL THRASH SHEFFIELD UTD

Alexandre Lacazette’s brace either side of a Gabriel Martinelli strike gave Arsenal a 3-0 victory over Sheffield United which lifts the Gunners into the top half of the Premier League table.

Arsenal had the better of the first-half chances, Martinelli finding the side-netting and later forcing goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale into a smart save.

And they took the lead when Bukayo Saka and Dani Ceballos exchanged passes before the latter produced an exquisite flick for Lacazette to round off a fine team move on 33 minutes.

Ramsdale then parried Nicolas Pepe’s shot into Martinelli’s path for a tap-in before Lacazette completed the scoring late on when played through on goal.

Arsenal’s first away Premier League victory over the Blades puts them on 45 points, above Leeds United and into ninth, with seven matches remaining.

Sheff Utd remain bottom with 14 points.
