MBAPPE, ICARDI ON TARGET AS PSG EDGE MONACO TO WIN FRENCH CUP

Kylian Mbappe set up the first goal and grabbed one of his own as Paris Saint-Germain retained the French Cup with a 2-0 victory over AS Monaco in Wednesday’s final at the Stade de France.

Quick thinking by Mbappe to disposes Axel Disasi in his own penalty area, as the Monaco defender let a short pass from goalkeeper Radoslaw Majecki slip under his feet, set up a 19th-minute opener for Mauro Icardi.

Mbappe took the ball away and, displaying quick feet, passed square for Icardi to tuck the ball home from close range.

With teammate Neymar suspended and watching from the empty stands, Mbappe was able to dominate the contest with his talent and pace and added the second goal in the 81st minute.

Angel Di Maria set him up with a short through-ball and the World Cup winner lifted his finish over Majecki to make sure of the outcome.

Mbappe’s goal came a minute after he had hit the crossbar with a clever chip from outside the penalty area having spotted Majecki off his line.

It was one of few chances in a largely dour final, played behind closed doors, that only came alive in the last 15 minutes.

PSG retained their title and extended to 14 their record number of wins in the cup. Monaco had won five previous times but last in 1991. They were last in the final in 2010 when PSG also beat them.

“We work every day to experience this type of emotion, reward and recognition. The work of a whole group, the staff, and the supporters who could not be here. We think about them a lot, this title is also for them,” Mbappe said.

“When you play for PSG, one of the biggest clubs in the world, the biggest club in the country, every title counts to go down in history. We want to be part of this story, it’s a great step today.”

PSG defender Alessandro Florenzi had a powerful shot tipped over by Majecki in the first half while Monaco created the better opportunities after the break.

PSG goalkeeper Keylor Navas made two good saves from Wissam Ben Yedder and Krepin Diatta and saw an errant cross rebound back into play off his crossbar.

But any hopes of a comeback were swiftly ended by the pace and vision of Mbappe as he settled the outcome.

Both clubs now turn their attention to the end of the Ligue 1 season on Sunday where they hold out hopes of winning the title. PSG are second, one point behind leaders Lille, while Monaco are three points adrift.

FEDERICO CHIESA SCORES WINNER AS JUVENTUS DEFEAT ATALANTA TO WIN COPPA ITALIA

Federico Chiesa fired a second-half winner as Juventus beat Atalanta 2-1 to win the Coppa Italia for the fifth time in the last seven seasons.

Italy forward Chiesa, on loan from Fiorentina, fired home into the bottom corner in the 73rd minute after Ruslan Malinovskyi had cancelled out Dejan Kulusevski’s first-half opener for Juve.

Andrea Pirlo’s side, who have conceded the Serie A title for the first time in 10 years this season, lifted the trophy for a record-extending 14th time.

Atalanta, who finished the game with 10 men after Rafael Toloi was shown a straight red card in the 88th minute for dissent, lost in the final for the second time in three years.

They were beaten 2-0 by Lazio in the 2019 final and last won the cup in 1963.

In France, Paris St Germain continued their domination in the Coupe de France as they beat Monaco 2-0 to lift the trophy for the sixth time in seven years.

Argentina striker Mauro Icardi took advantage of a defensive slip to guide the ball home following Kylian Mbappe’s pass in the 19th minute.

PSG looked the more likely to extend their lead and Mbappe put the icing on the cake with a sublime chipped finish nine minutes from time to seal the club’s 14th Coupe de France win.

LIVERPOOL WIN AT BURNLEY TO STAY IN CONTROL OF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE QUALIFICATION

Liverpool head into their final Premier League match exactly where they need to be with their Champions League destiny in their own hands after a 3-0 victory over Burnley lifted them back into the top four.

It was far from pretty – their encounters against the Clarets rarely are – but it was essential as the result put them ahead of Leicester on goal difference.

And with a four-goal cushion Jurgen Klopp’s side know if they match the Foxes’ result against Tottenham in their final home match of the season against Crystal Palace they will have pulled off an impressive comeback from two months ago when, for a time, any European football looked beyond them.

Even third place may be up for grabs should Chelsea stumble at Aston Villa, whose victory earlier in the evening had guaranteed Liverpool Europa League football at the very least.

But they were indebted to Roberto Firmino’s strike late in the first half, back-up central defender Nat Phillips’ first senior goal early in the second and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s first goal of the season to put a place among Europe’s elite back on the table.

Winning a fourth successive league match for the first time this season means they go into the final day as the Premier League’s most in-form team with 23 points from the last 27 available.

Back in January Burnley ended Liverpool’s 68-game unbeaten home league run with their first win at Anfield since 1974 but the visitors would have fancied their chances against goalkeeper Will Norris, making his Premier League debut for the club.

With Nick Pope failing to recover from a knee injury, Sean Dyche decided to drop Bailey Peacock-Farrell as he had conceded 14 in four league matches this season.

Norris’ only previous top-flight appearance was as an 89th-minute substitute for Wolves two years ago and he spent last season on loan at League One Ipswich but the visitors were criminally wasteful and he barely touched the ball never mind making a save.

Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Firmino all had early sight of goal, Mane’s miss the most embarrassing as he bundled wide from close range from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross.

Thiago Alcantara, the only Liverpool player seemingly not panicked by Burnley’s in-your-face approach, then joined the ranks of missed chances when his angled shot flew across the face of goal.

Salah (again), Alexander-Arnold and Phillips all shot over while Mane was blocked by the sliding James Tarkowski as the visitors racked up 11 shots without one on target.

Conversely, a Dwight McNeil drive had forced Alisson Becker to palm behind while Chris Wood fired into the side-netting after a long ball caught both Rhys Williams and Alisson in two minds.

The hosts had been so successful in disrupting the former champions’ rhythm that there was an air of desperation building right up until the moment Firmino struck two minutes before the break.

Andrew Robertson was again the provider with his low cut-back met first time by the Brazil international who in going past Fernando Torres’ club total of 65 became the first Liverpool player to score on three successive visits to Turf Moor.

One goal never seemed likely to be enough and Salah firing into the side-netting soon after the restart did little for the nerves and when the crucial second did come it was an unlikely source.

Phillips, so good in the air at the other end, rose highest to plant a header past Norris from Mane’s cross and then proved his worth under his own crossbar by heading Tarkowski’s effort of the line.

They avoided one or two anxious moments as Burnley stepped up the pressure before Oxlade-Chamberlain drilled home in the 89th minute to lift them back into the top four for the first time since February.

OGBONNA, ANTONIO MOVE WESTHAM UP TO SIXTH AFTER THRASHING WESTBROM 3-1

Late goals by Angelo Ogbonna and Michail Antonio sealed a 3-1 win over West Bromwich Albion to edge West Ham United closer to UEFA Europa League football next season.

West Ham made a bad start to the match as Declan Rice missed a penalty before Matheus Pereira gave West Brom a 27th-minute lead, scoring directly from a corner for his sixth goal in eight matches.

But Tomas Soucek equalised in first-half stoppage time when he tapped in Said Benrahma’s low cross at the far post.

Aaron Cresswell then struck a post before the left-back’s corner kick set up Ogbonna to put West Ham ahead on 82 minutes.

Antonio added a third on the counter-attack with two minutes left after being played in by Jesse Lingard.

It means West Ham need only a point at home to Southampton on Sunday to guarantee a sixth-placed finish.

Relegated West Brom stay 19th on 26 points and have announced Sam Allardyce will step down from his position as head coach at the end of the season.

Richarlison boosted Everton’s hopes of European qualification with the only goal in a home win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

In an even opening 45 minutes at Goodison Park Wolves came closest to scoring but Adama Traore’s shot was tipped over by Jordan Pickford.

Everton took the lead three minutes into the second half when Richarlison rose highest to head in Gylfi Sigurdsson’s corner.

Everton pressed for a second and after had John Ruddy denied Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Sigurdsson’s deflected effort went narrowly wide.

A first Premier League double over Wolves keeps Everton in eighth place but they are level on 59 points with seventh-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who lost to Aston Villa this evening, and three points behind West Ham United in sixth.

Wolves stay 12th with 45 points.

ASTON VILLA BEAT TOTTENHAM IN A DRAMATIC 2-1 COME BACK VICTORY

Aston Villa came from behind to dent Tottenham Hotspur’s chances of qualifying for European football next season.

Steven Bergwijn had given Spurs the lead with a superb strike but the hosts gifted Villa an equaliser when Sergio Reguilon sliced Marvelous Nakamba’s cross into his own net to score the 1,000th own goal in Premier League history.

Ollie Watkins completed the turnaround six minutes before half-time with a close-range finish for his 14th goal of the campaign.

Anwar El Ghazi and Watkins then missed further chances for Villa to extend their lead before the break.

Spurs rallied in the second half, but Bergwijn and Harry Kane were both denied by Emiliano Martinez as they fell to a first home defeat under interim head coach Ryan Mason.

They drop to seventh on 59 points, three behind West Ham United and above Everton on goal difference alone.

A first Villa win in four matches keeps them in 11th with 52 points.

ARSENAL SCORE LATE GOALS AGAINST PALACE TO KEEP EUROPEAN HOPES ALIVE

Stoppage-time goals by Gabriel Martinelli and Nicolas Pepe earned Arsenal a 3-1 victory at Crystal Palace that keeps alive their hopes of a top-seven finish.

Palace had the better of the early chances in Roy Hodgson’s final home match in charge of his boyhood club, with Gary Cahill, Christian Benteke and Jeffrey Schlupp all going close.

But Arsenal went in front after 35 minutes through Pepe, who volleyed in from Kieran Tierney’s cross.

Benteke equalised in the 62nd minute, heading in from Andros Townsend’s free-kick for his fourth goal in as many matches.

With both sides pushing for a late winner, Martinelli bundled in Martin Odegaard’s cross before Pepe sealed the win with a fine run and finish for his second goal of the match.

A seventh London derby unbeaten takes Arsenal above Leeds United into ninth, a point behind Tottenham Hotspur and Everton.

Palace lie 13th with 44 points.

SOTON 0-2 LEEDS: THIRD STRAIGHT WIN TAKES WHITES TO TOP EIGHT.

Patrick Bamford and Tyler Roberts were on target as Leeds United secured a third straight victory and climbed to eighth, staying in the fight for European qualification.

Leeds goalkeeper Kiko Casilla tipped a Che Adams header over the bar in the opening minutes and later palmed away another effort from the striker as Southampton started well in front of 8,000 home fans.

The visitors’ best chance of the first half fell to Stuart Dallas, who controlled the ball on his chest before shooting wide just inside the box.

Saints’ James Ward-Prowse clipped the bar with a free-kick soon after the break, while Alex McCarthy denied Dallas and Bamford in quick succession at the other end.

But Bamford beat McCarthy with 17 minutes left, latching on to Rodrigo’s pass and finishing between the goalkeeper’s legs for his 16th Premier League goal of the season.

Roberts then struck for the first time in the competition, reacting quickest when Bamford’s stoppage-time shot was saved and slotting into the bottom corner.

Leeds’ 10th away win of the campaign, which is a club record in the Premier League, takes them to 56 points, three behind Spurs and West Ham United in the battle for European places, although the London clubs each have a match in hand and better goal difference.

Southampton stay 14th with 43 points.

BRIGHTON STAGE SECOND HALF COME BACK TO BEAT 10-MAN MANCHESTER CITY 3-2

Brighton staged a remarkable second-half comeback to stun 10-man Manchester City with an astonishing 3-2 Premier League victory on a raucous evening at the Amex Stadium.

Almost jubilant 8,000 fans were in attendance on the south coast to see Dan Burn sweep home a 76th-minute winner against Pep Guardiola’s shocked champions.

An early header from Ilkay Gundogan and a superb individual effort from Phil Foden just after the restart put City in control before Albion came roaring back courtesy of Leandro Trossard and Adam Webster.

City, who succumbed to a first top-flight away defeat in 13 outings, were forced to play for 80 minutes a man down after Joao Cancelo was dismissed for denying Danny Welbeck a goal-scoring opportunity.

A sensational success for Graham Potter’s hosts was a first in eight Premier League attempts against the Champions League finalists.

It came at a cost for both sides, with Welbeck and Gundogan each limping off injured, although that could not dampen the spirit of the euphoric home faithful at full-time.

Due to coronavirus restrictions and some unconvincing form last year, Brighton fans had not been present to witness their team win since December 2019.

The 7,945 fortunate enough to acquire tickets were in exuberant mood ahead of kick-off but were swiftly silenced only two minutes in as City captain Gundogan headed the visitors in front.

Quick feet from Riyad Mahrez – one of six players recalled by Guardiola – worked space on the right and his delightful cross to the back post was perfect for Gundogan to calmly nod his 13th Premier League goal of the season beyond Seagulls goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

The mood did not dampen the enthusiasm for too long and there was soon reason for greater optimism as City were reduced to 10 men just 10 minutes in.

Cancelo misjudged a long ball forward and, in his desperation to atone, brought down Welbeck as the Seagulls forward raced towards goal.

VAR had a look at the incident – which prompted some colourful chanting on the terraces – before agreeing with the decision of referee Stuart Attwell to dismiss Cancelo for denying a goal-scoring opportunity.

Pascal Gross was unable to capitalise on the resultant free-kick, while Guardiola sacrificed the unfortunate Ferran Torres – who scored a hat-trick at Newcastle on Friday – in favour of Eric Garcia.

Albion owner Tony Bloom declared in his programme notes that the club were playing the best football in their history under head coach Potter.

With a man advantage, the Seagulls were ideally placed to show off their slick passing game against arguably the masters of the art.

Yet they still had to be careful at the other end, as evidenced by Ben White’s last-ditch tackle preventing Foden doubling the advantage.

Brighton’s chances to level before the break were relatively scant. Stand-in skipper Gross made a mess of good work from Jakub Moder when well-placed inside the box, before their attacking threat was reduced by Welbeck limping off with an apparent thigh injury.

The former England forward, whose Albion contract expires in the summer, had registered four times in his last eight outings and there were chants of ‘sign him up’ as he headed straight down the tunnel to be replaced by Trossard.

Just like they had done in the first half, City made a rapid start to the second, shrugging off their numerical disadvantage to go further ahead in the 48th minute courtesy of Foden’s magic.

There appeared to be little danger when the England man, who had been operating as a lone forward following the early enforced reshuffle, collected the ball wide on the left around 15 yards inside his own half.

But, after accelerating away from White on the halfway line, he burst into the penalty box on the left-hand side before confidently finding the bottom-right corner as Webster attempted to close him down and then cupped his left ear to the stunned home supporters.

City’s breathing space was short lived.

Seagulls substitute Trossard swiftly made a game of it just two minutes later, capitalising on a sloppy pass from Rodri by charging into City’s area and eventually unleashing the ball high into the net after a series of feints bamboozled the visitors’ backline and temporarily frustrated the crowd.

City were clearly uneasy about their slender advantage, resorting to time-wasting at goal kicks.

The disruptive tactics prompted match official Attwell to speak to Fernandinho, who came on to take the armband when Gundogan followed Welbeck in exiting injured, and Albion soon showed why they were necessary.

Guardiola could have been forgiven for thinking his side were playing in a sold-out stadium when Webster rose majestically to thump a header into the bottom-left corner from Gross’ pinpoint cross with 18 minutes to go, prompting scenes of unbridled jubilation in the stands.

Incredibly, the decibel levels increased even further just four minutes later.

Marauding centre-back Burn found himself in unfamiliar surroundings in City’s box and, after Ederson repelled his initial effort, he promptly swept in the rebound to complete a stunning turnaround that those present will never forget.

City still had time to prevent defeat and would have done so had Sanchez not brilliantly pushed away an effort from substitute Gabriel Jesus.

BRYAN CANCEL OUT CAVANI’S EARLY WONDER GOAL TO RESCUE A POINT FOR FULHAM

Joe Bryan’s second-half header helped Fulham come from behind to earn a 1-1 draw at Manchester United.

In front of 10,000 returning home fans at Old Trafford, Edinson Cavani gave Man Utd the lead with a stunning strike on 15 minutes.

The Uruguayan spotted Alphonse Areola off his line and lobbed the Fulham goalkeeper with a first-time shot from range.

Bruno Fernandes fired a free-kick narrowly wide, while at the other end David De Gea denied Ademola Lookman and Fabio Carvalho.

Fulham equalised on 76 minutes when Bobby De Cordova-Reid’s cross was headed in at the far post by Bryan.

Man Utd, without a win in three PL matches, are second on 71 points, while relegated Fulham lie 18th on 28 points.
