Ozil will see out his contract

Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil says he will stay with the club “through to the last day” of his contract in June 2021.

The former Germany international, 31, has not played since the Premier League resumed in June, with manager Mikel Arteta citing “pure football reasons”.

But Ozil dismissed reports the club were looking to pay up the last year of his £350,000-a-week deal.

“Things have been difficult but I love Arsenal,” he told the Athletic. “I’ll decide when I go, not other people.”

“I’ll give everything I have for this club,” Ozil added. “Situations like these will never break me, they only make me stronger. I showed in the past that I can come back into the team and I will show it again.”

Ozil, who joined Arsenal in a £42.4m move from Real Madrid in 2013, fell out of favour under previous manager Unai Emery before returning to the side under interim boss Freddie Ljungberg.

After Arteta’s appointment in December, Ozil started all 10 of Arsenal’s Premier League games immediately before the coronavirus pandemic forced a three-month suspension of the Premier League in March, but has not featured in their past 13 matches in all competitions.

Despite Arteta and his first-team players accepting a 12.5% pay cut in April, Arsenal announced they plan to make 55 staff redundant because of the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Ozil opted against a pay cut because the players were “rushed” and believes “possibly the decision affected my chances on the pitch”.

While he respects Arteta’s decision to leave him out, Ozil believes he should have been given a chance to show what he can do on the pitch, saying: “You don’t play 10 games in a row if you’re unfit, not good enough or don’t behave well.”

He added that he was “not the only player who rejected the cut in the end, but only my name came out”.

Vertoghen to move to Benfica

Former Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen is having a medical at Benfica on Thursday before signing a three-year deal.

Vertonghen, 33, left Spurs at the end of the season after eight years with the Premier League club.

The Belgium international made over 300 appearances for Tottenham.

Benfica finished second in the Portuguese top flight last season and will enter the Champions League at the third qualifying round stage.

Vertonghen did not win a major honour in England. He was part of the Spurs teams that lost the League Cup final to Chelsea in 2015 and the Champions League final to Liverpool in 2019.

Fans Boo Black lives Matter protest

FC Dallas defender Reggie Cannon has condemned the “disgusting” booing of players kneeling during the national anthem by some home fans before their match against Nashville on Wednesday.

Almost 3,000 fans were inside the Toyota Stadium, with supporters permitted at some Major League Soccer (MLS) games if local rules allow.

Some boos could be heard as players from both teams took a knee in protest against racial injustice.

“How disgraceful is that?” said Cannon.

“You got fans booing you for people taking a stand for what they believe in. Millions of other people support this cause and we discussed with every other team and the league what we’re going to do and we’ve got fans booing us in our own stadium.

“I think it was absolutely disgusting.”

The match, which Nashville won 1-0, was the first major league sporting event with fans since the MLS was suspended in March because of the global coronavirus pandemic.

During that time, protests have swept across the United States and worldwide following the death of George Floyd, an unarmed African-American man who died on 25 May after a white police officer knelt on his neck for several minutes.

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin faces charges of second-degree murder and manslaughter, while three other officers were also sacked and charged with aiding and abetting murder.

“I’m sorry for our fans because we had someone chanting ‘USA’ when they don’t understand what kneeling means,” added 22-year-old USA international Cannon.

“They don’t understand why we’re kneeling – they can’t see the reason, they just think we’re the ignorant ones and it’s incredibly frustrating.

“When we decided to kneel I knew it was going to happen. That should tell you something. I knew we were going to have some negative pushback from having a unified response over what’s going on.

“That’s a problem.”

Cannon said Dallas’ intention to kneel had been communicated to both Nashville and the league before the match.

He had asked for the US national anthem not to be played but the MLS has previously said it will be when fans are in attendance.

A person was reportedly escorted out of the stadium after throwing a water bottle at players as they were kneeling.

“It hurts me because I love our fans. I love this club and I want to see the support that the league has given us – that everyone has given us – from our fans,” said Cannon.

“As soon as I heard that boo I tried to play on and I knew what to expect. We’ll take it one day at a time and again we’re unified in this response and everyone stands together.”

Juventus offer Ronaldo to Clubs including Barcelona

Serie A champions Juventus offered Cristiano Ronaldo to Barcelona, according to Spanish football expert Guillem Balague.

Juventus are trying to offload Ronaldo as they try to lower their wage bill.

The club have been hit hard by the coronavirus crisis and are looking to trim costs.

Ronaldo has had an immensely successful campaign for Juve, finishing as their top goalscorer with 35 in all competitions.

Also, it has helped them lift the Serie A title, though which was not enough to prevent their exit from the Champions League at the hands of Lyon.

Following their Champions League elimination, Maurizio Sarri was sacked and Andrea Pirlo has been brought in – despite just being made the Under-23 boss nine days prior.

Balague claims the former Real Madrid star is paid a whopping €23m-a-year and the club have offered his services to a number of clubs – including Barcelona.

“The reason why Cristiano Ronaldo has been linked to PSG is not so much that PSG are thinking of getting him, it is because Jorge Mendes has been given instructions to find a team for Ronaldo,” Balague told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“We’ve seen this in the last six months, he was linked to Real Madrid.

“They said no chance, he’s not coming back.

“And there’s been talks about the MLS because Juventus want to get rid of that wage.

“It is as drastic as that. He’s been offered everywhere, including Barcelona.

“I’m not sure if they can get rid of him easily [because] with the kind of money he still earns – 23million euros net – that he was earning at Real Madrid and I think he equalled those wages when he went to Juventus.

“Who is going to pay that kind of money?”

Barcelona player test positive for Corona various

Barcelona say an unnamed squad member has tested positive for Covid-19.

He was one of nine reporting for pre-season training, showed no symptoms and has been quarantined at his home.

Barca say he has not been in contact with any senior players, who travel to Lisbon on Thursday to prepare for a Champions League quarter-final.

Valencia confirmed two cases of Covid-19 this week, while Atletico Madrid reported two positive tests before their Champions League quarter-final.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Champions League is concluding with a ‘final eight’ tournament in Lisbon, comprising single-leg games held behind closed doors.

Barcelona play Bayern Munich on Friday, the day after Atletico Madrid face RB Leipzig.

Everyone who has been in contact with the Barcelona player has been tracked to perform tests.

Mbappe fit enough for Atalanta game

Kylian Mbappe could return for Paris St-Germain in Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final against Atalanta.

The France forward, 21, has recovered from an ankle injury and boss Thomas Tuchel says he will feature in Lisbon if “nothing extraordinary happens”.

However, Tuchel did then suggest Mbappe was most likey to be used off the bench against the Italian side.

“We are really pleased to have the possibility of finishing the match with Kylian on the pitch,” said Tuchel.

“That gives Neymar someone who likes playing alongside him.”

World Cup winner Mbappe sprained his ankle during PSG’s French Cup final win over Saint-Etienne on 24 July, but he has recovered in time for the ‘final eight’ stage of the Champions League.

The French champions have not reached the semi-finals of Europe’s elite club competition since the Qatari takeover of the club in 2011.

Konta wasn’t feeling well during defeat

Johanna Konta says she felt “lightheaded” after suffering from heart palpitations during her straight-set defeat at the Lexington Open.

Konta, seeded third on her WTA Tour return, was beaten 6-4 6-4 by world number 48 Marie Bouzkova in Kentucky.

The Briton needed medical attention early on but, after consultation with a doctor, was able to return to court.

“My heart rate shoots up for no reason,” Konta, 29, said. “I wasn’t gassing in any way in my lungs.”

She continued: “It actually goes up and stays there so it makes me a bit lightheaded – I just needed to see the doctor and the physio.

“It was very high when they came out. I was having all the checks. I am as fit as a fiddle but it can happen. It took a while to settle down but then it did and I was able to concentrate on the tennis.”

Konta had also lost to the Czech Republic’s Bouzkova in Mexico in March in her final match before the tour was suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic.

After play was delayed by four hours because of a rain storm and after surviving a break-point scare in the opening game of the match, which was played in extreme humidity, Konta appeared to be struggling with the conditions.

She has suffered similar issues in the past, notably at the 2016 US Open and at the Fed Cup last year. She recovered to win both matches.

“We don’t know why it happens: it’s been under stressful situations, in no-stress situations. We just don’t know. It’s been sporadic,” Konta said.

“It’s not ideal. I am going to have another ECG and see what protocols we can take. It’s probably not going to happen again for another year or something. I’m not too worried, no.”

British compatriot Heather Watson also made a losing return to the WTA Tour in Kentucky, beaten 6-2 6-1 by American Jennifer Brady.

Sancho will not Leave Dortmund

England forward Jadon Sancho will remain a Borussia Dortmund player next season, says the club’s sporting director Michael Zorc.

The 20-year-old has been named in the Bundesliga club’s squad for this week’s training camp in Switzerland.

It comes on the day of the deadline set by Dortmund for any deal to be agreed for Sancho, who is Manchester United’s top summer target.

“We plan on having Jadon Sancho in our team this season,” said Zorc.

“The decision is final. I think that answers all our questions.

“Last summer we adjusted Jadon’s salary to match the development of his performances. So in context, we had already extended his contract until 2023 back then.”

Dortmund want about £100m for Sancho, who they signed from Manchester City for £10m in 2017.

Sancho and England Under-17 midfielder Jude Bellingham are among 31 players to travel to Bad Ragaz.

Bellingham, 17, joined Dortmund from Championship side Birmingham City in July.

Dortmund have two matches during their training camp, against Austrian sides SCR Altach on Wednesday and Austria Vienna on Sunday.

They set the deadline for Sancho, who is under contract with them until 2022, because they want undisturbed preparation for the 2020-21 Bundesliga season.

The new campaign starts on 18 September, with the transfer deadline for international deals on 5 October.

Man city sign world cup winner

United States midfielder and 2019 World Cup winner Sam Mewis says joining Manchester City “is like winning the lottery”.

Mewis has played 67 times for her country and featured regularly during last year’s World Cup, starting the 2-0 final win over the Netherlands in Lyon.

The 27-year-old has joined the former Women’s Super League champions from North Carolina Courage.

“I feel so lucky to have the opportunity,” Mewis told BBC Sport.

“A couple of months ago my agent came to me with it and my eyes just kind of opened wide because obviously Manchester City is such a great club and is so well known.

“We [North Carolina Courage] played them last year in the ICC [International Champions Cup] tournament and I just remember thinking how good they were and how every player was so comfortable on the ball.

“I thought it would be cool to play overseas one day and for a club like Manchester City. I feel really lucky and really fortunate to have this opportunity.”

The midfielder is City’s second summer signing after England striker Chloe Kelly joined from Everton.

They narrowly missed out on their second WSL title last season – they were top of the table when the campaign was suspended in March because of the coronavirus pandemic, but dropped to second spot when final positions were decided on a points-per-game basis.

Under new boss Gareth Taylor, they will start the 2020-21 season with an away game at newly-promoted Aston Villa during the weekend of 5-6 September.

Hojberg set to join Spurs

Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg will have a medical at Tottenham on Monday.

The clubs agreed a deal last week, with the 25-year-old Denmark international choosing Spurs ahead of Everton.

Meanwhile, Tottenham’s English defender Kyle Walker-Peters, 23, is set to sign for the Saints, after a loan spell at St Mary’s last season.

The fees are undisclosed but BBC Sport understands Spurs will pay Southampton at least £3m more for Hojbjerg.

Hojbjerg joined the Saints from Bayern Munich in 2016 but was set to enter the final year of his contract at St Mary’s.
