NEW 1-2 LEI: FOXES GET RECORD WIN TO CLOSE IN LEAGUE LEADERS.

James Maddison and Youri Tielemans struck as Leicester City secured a fifth straight win at Newcastle United, triumphing 2-1 and moving one point behind the Premier League leaders.

Jamie Vardy had a first-half goal ruled out for offside and volleyed wide from a narrow angle soon after the break, before setting up the 55th-minute opener.

Receiving the ball on the left side of the box on the counter-attack, Vardy teed up Maddison, who powered a rising drive past goalkeeper Karl Darlow.

Leicester doubled their lead in the 72nd minute as Marc Albrighton pulled the ball back to Tielemans, who whipped a first-time finish inside the right post.

Newcastle substitute Andy Carroll gave Newcastle some hope, volleying in to score his first goal since returning to the Magpies in August 2019, but the hosts were unable to equalise.

Leicester equalled a club record by winning five successive away Premier League matches against a single opponent and climb to third on 32 points, one behind Liverpool and Manchester United.

Newcastle drop to 15th on 19 points.

MADRID CLIMB TOP OF LA LIGA TABLE AFTER EASY WIN AGAINST CELTA VIGO.

Real Madrid moved one point clear at the top of the La Liga table on Saturday after their 2-0 win over Celta Vigo at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano. It’s a league lead that could last little more than 12 hours, though, with Atletico Madrid (who have three games in hand) travelling to Alaves on Sunday with visions of returning to Spanish football’s summit.

Sergio Ramos sat out the visit of Eduardo Coudet’s men with a reported stomach illness, but the hosts maintained their stout defensive form behind Raphael Varane and Nacho as Thibaut Courtois claimed his seventh clean sheet of the league season.

Following the match, Zinedine Zidane said: “They’re the most in-form team we’ve played. We had difficulties, but we controlled the game. We pressed them high up, we didn’t let their good players play.

“We’re always better when we go for the game. We have more problems sometimes when we’re in our half. Our style is to go for the game, and the pressing of the front three is important.”

Madrid needed just six minutes to take the lead, but did so in a series of events that could have changed the complexion of the game.

With Courtois beaten by a chipped effort from Iago Aspas, Nacho cleared the goal-bound attempt off the line, starting a rapid Madrid counterattack. The ball found its way to Marco Asensio on the left wing, from where he stood up a cross to the far post that was met by the head of Lucas Vazquez to open the scoring. It was the latter’s 15th La Liga goal with Los Blancos, and the former’s 15th league assist for the club.

Celta thought they had a route back into the contest in the 28th minute when Renato Tapia’s flick struck the arm of Ferland Mendy in the Madrid box, but when video replay confirmed that the left-back’s arm was tucked tightly against his body, the VAR denied the visitors’ penalty appeals.

Madrid put the result beyond doubt in the 53rd minute, with Asensio and Vazquez again combining for a goal, this time reversing roles — Asensio the goal scorer, Vazquez the provider — after Luka Modric intercepted a loose pass in midfield and sprung a devastating counter.

“We said before the game that after slipping up against Elche we wanted to show our usual aggression and win the ball back high up the pitch,” said Vazquez.

“Right now every game is key, we are on a good run, we didn’t expect to draw the other day but the team is in good shape and if we keep playing like this we’ll be fighting for everything.”

Real Madrid are next in action on Jan. 9, when they visit Osasuna, while Celta Vigo visit Ibiza on Tuesday for the second round of the Copa del Rey.

GERARD’S RANGERS GO 19 POINTS CLEAR AFTER BEATING CELTIC IN SCOTTISH DERBY.

Rangers took all three points in their Old Firm derby against Celtic with a 1-0 win at Ibrox to move 19 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Despite Celtic’s early dominance, Rangers were given a huge helping hand on 62 minutes when Nir Bitton was sent off for a professional foul on Alfredo Morelos.

Rangers opened the scoring eight minutes later when Celtic’s Callum McGregor put through his own net from a corner as he challenged Joe Arribo for the header.

Celtic were by far the better team in the first half as they dominated proceedings and Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor produced a superb performance to keep the game at 0-0.

But the game changed with the red card as Britton hauled down Morelos as the Rangers striker went through on goal.

Despite winning the game 1-0, Rangers failed to register a single shot on target as they profited from an own goal.

Steven Gerrard’s side held on to open up a seemingly insurmountable lead at the top, though Celtic — who have won the last nine Scottish league titles — have three games in hand.

The result continues Rangers’ incredible home record with their 11th consecutive victory, having conceded just once.

Paris Saint-Germain have announced the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager on a contract which runs until 2022.

Pochettino replaces Thomas Tuchel, who was sacked on Christmas Eve following a 4-0 win against Strasbourg in Ligue 1.

Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Pochettino takes over with PSG third in Ligue 1, a point behind Lyon and Lille.

I am really happy & honoured,” Pochettino wrote on Twitter. “I would like to thank the club’s management for their trust.

“As you know, this club has always held a special place in my heart. I have wonderful memories. I return to the club today with a lot of ambition & humility.”

PSG chairman and CEO Nasser Al-Khelaifi added: “We are very pleased to welcome Mauricio Pochettino as first team coach. I am proud to see our former captain returning to Paris Saint-Germain, as the club has always remained his home.

“The return of Mauricio fits perfectly with our ambitions and it will be another exciting chapter for the club and one I am positive the fans will enjoy. With the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino, Paris Saint-Germain is committed to continue to build and move the club forward over the coming years.”

Sources told ESPN that he had been in negotiations with the French champions for a fortnight before his appointment.

The Argentine spent two years of his playing career at PSG, where he won the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2001.

With Ligue 1 on winter break, Pochettino’s first game will come against Saint-Etienne on Jan. 6 before the Champions League round of 16 double-header against Barcelona.

LACAZETTE SCORES TWICE TO DROWN WESTBROM IN THIRD STRAIGHT WIN FOR THE GUNNERS.

Arsenal scored twice in each half to earn a third straight Premier League victory, beating West Bromwich Albion 4-0 at The Hawthorns.

The Gunners started the match strongly and took the lead through Kieran Tierney’s fine solo goal, the defender beating Darnell Furlong before cutting inside and finding the top-right corner.

Matt Phillips stung the palms of Bernd Leno before Arsenal doubled their advantage with 28 minutes on the clock.

Emile Smith-Rowe squared for Bukayo Saka to tap in from close range after a slick passing move involving Alexandre Lacazette.

Lacazette then pounced on a loose ball on the hour mark to score for the third match in succession, before converting Tierney’s cross to double his tally four minutes later.

Having built on wins over Chelsea and Brighton & Hove Albion, Arsenal move up to 11th place with 23 points.

West Brom remain 19th, six points from safety.

EBERE EZE’S SOLO GOAL ADDS AESTHETICS TO PALACE VICTORY.

Eberechi Eze struck a superb individual goal as Crystal Palace claimed a 2-0 win over Sheffield United at Selhurst Park.

Palace’s fastest Premier League goal in three years gave them a great start, Jeffrey Schlupp guiding in Christian Benteke’s pass in the fourth minute.

Eze, who had replaced the injured Schlupp, then ran from his own half and beat several opponents before curling the ball home in first-half stoppage time.

Palace also lost Benteke to a dead leg shortly into the second half and became content to soak up the Blades’ pressure.

The closest the visiting side came was when substitute Antwoine Hackford, who became their youngest PL player at 16 years and 288 days old, saw his goalbound shot cleared by Joel Ward.

Palace’s first win in six lifts them up to 14th with 22 points, while Sheff Utd are still winless at the bottom, on just two points.

KANE, SON HELP SPURS DECIMATE LEEDS TO MOVE UP TO THIRD.

Harry Kane and Son Heung-min each scored and provided an assist as Tottenham Hotspur won 3-0 against Leeds United to go third.

Leeds started the stronger and Ezgjan Alioski hit the side-netting in the fourth minute.

Spurs won a penalty on 29 minutes when Alioski fouled Steven Bergwijn on the edge of the area. Kane converted for his 10th league goal of the season.

On 43 minutes, Kane crossed for Son to score the second with a sweeping finish. It was Son’s 100th goal in all competitions for Spurs and the 13th time the pair have combined this season, a joint Premier League record.

Toby Alderweireld confirmed the win with a header from Son’s corner five minutes after the break.

Leeds threatened throughout, but failed to score in an away match for the first time this season.

Matt Doherty’s stoppage-time red card for a second booking was the only negative for Spurs, who have 29 points, four behind Liverpool and Manchester United.

Leeds are six points behind in 12th.

THOMAS SOUCEK SCORES LATE TO HELP WESTHAM END EVERTON UNBEATEN RUN.

Tomas Soucek scored a late winner as West Ham United won at Everton in the first premier league match of 2021.

In a cagey first half, Bernard forced a flying save from Darren Randolph, a late replacement for Lukasz Fabianski in the West Ham starting XI.

Everton brought on James Rodriguez after the break but were unable to create a chance for Dominic Calvert-Lewin to add to his 11 goals for the season.

West Ham had a big chance to go ahead just after the hour-mark, only for Pablo Fornals to head Jarrod Bowen’s cross wide.

But Soucek made no mistake in the 86th minute as he converted at the back post after Aaron Cresswell’s shot had taken a deflection off Yerry Mina.

The midfielder’s fifth goal of the season gives manager David Moyes a first win at Everton since he left Goodison Park in 2013.

West Ham stay 10th but have the same amount of points as fifth-placed Aston Villa. Everton are three points higher in fourth after losing their five-match unbeaten run.

FERNANDES PENALTY PUT UNITED LEVEL WITH LIVERPOOL.

Bruno Fernandes’s penalty earned Manchester United a 2-1 win over Aston Villa to go level on points with leaders Liverpool.

Man Utd took a 40th-minute lead at Old Trafford when Anthony Martial headed in Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s right-wing centre.

Villa levelled just before the hour-mark as Jack Grealish crossed for Bertrand Traore to score for the third time in four matches.

But the hosts took just three minutes to regain their lead, with Fernandes converting from the spot after Paul Pogba was brought down by Douglas Luiz.

Emiliano Martinez then made stunning saves to deny Martial and Fernandes before Tyrone Mings passed up a late chance to claim a point when he guided Matty Cash’s free-kick wide.

An English league record 36th victory on New Year’s Day puts Man Utd second on goal difference.

Villa drop to sixth place after a first defeat in six matches.
