A.VILLA 3-4 SOTON: JAMES WARD-PROWSE SHINES ON BIRTHDAY AS SAINTS CLIMB TO THIRD ON THE LOG

James Ward-Prowse scored two free-kicks and got an assist as Southampton held off a late Aston Villa fightback for a 4-3 away win that sends them third.

Southampton had an early goal overturned for offside following a VAR review but went ahead on 20 minutes when Ward-Prowse’s cross was headed in by Jannik Vestergaard.

Ward-Prowse then netted from two superb set-pieces on a 26th birthday to remember for the Southampton captain.

In the second half Danny Ings crashed in a fourth Saints goal off the crossbar before the striker was forced off injured.

Tyrone Mings pulled one back for Villa from Jack Grealish’s cross and the hosts set up a nervy finish with two goals in stoppage time.

Ollie Watkins converted a penalty won by Grealish who then caught Alex McCarthy unsighted from long range.

But Southampton held on to make their best start after seven matches since 2014/15. Villa drop to sixth after back-to-back defeats.

LIVERPOOL 2-1 WESTHAM: JOTA SCORES WINNER SECOND TIME IN A ROW

Diogo Jota came off the bench to earn Liverpool a 2-1 win over West Ham United, which helped the champions equal an Anfield record.

Pablo Fornals had put West Ham in front on 10 minutes, when he collected a Joe Gomez clearance and struck in a low shot.

Liverpool’s increasing pressure paid off three minutes before half-time thanks to Mohamed Salah’s penalty after the Egyptian had been fouled by Arthur Masuaku.

After the break, Fornals had one shot saved and another blocked by Andrew Robertson.

Shortly after having a goal overturned on 77 minutes after the Video Assistant Referee had spotted a foul in the build-up, Jota scored the winner.

Fellow substitute Xherdan Shaqiri played him in with an exquisite pass to finish and send Liverpool top on 16 points, as they equalled their longest unbeaten home run of 63 league matches.

West Ham are 13th on eight points as their four-match unbeaten run was ended.

KYLE WALKER SCORES TO GIVE CITY VICTORY OVER SHEFFIELD UTD.

Kyle Walker’s first Premier League away goal handed Manchester City a 1-0 win over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

Ferran Torres twice went close for City early on, heading wide before testing Aaron Ramsdale from close range.

City took the lead on 28 minutes with a goal from Walker, a former Sheff Utd player. On his 100th Premier League appearance for City, Walker received Kevin De Bruyne’s pass and shot in low from outside the area.

Sheff Utd’s best spell came around the 70-minute mark as substitute John Lundstram fired over from a well-worked opening.

Ramsdale again denied Bernardo Silva from doubling City’s lead late on, one of seven saves the goalkeeper made.

City are four matches unbeaten and rise to seventh with 11 points. Sheffield United remain on one point in 19th.

BURNLEY 0-3 CHELSEA: ZIYECH INSPIRES BLUES TO IMPRESSIVE VICTORY AT TURF MOOR

Hakim Ziyech scored one goal and created another on his first Premier League start as Chelsea beat Burnley 3-0 at Turf Moor.

Ashley Barnes had Burnley’s best chance on five minutes but, after controlling a ball over the top, the striker shot over.

Ziyech’s first Premier League goal came in the 26th minute, when the Moroccan converted a low shot that wrongfooted Nick Pope.

Chelsea doubled their lead on 63 minutes when Mason Mount’s corner was powerfully headed in by Kurt Zouma.

Ziyech turned provider seven minutes later for Timo Werner to make it 3-0, with the German only starting after Christian Pulisic was injured in the warm-up.

Chelsea are five unbeaten and rise to fourth with 12 points.

Burnley are bottom with just one point.

AIT-NOURI DEBUT GOAL, PODENCE STRIKE HELP WOLVES EASE PAST EAGLES TO LEVEL ON POINTS WITH LEAGUE LEADERS

A debut goal by Rayan Ait-Nouri set Wolverhampton Wanderers on the way to a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, putting them level on points with the Premier League’s top two.

The hosts took the lead on 18 minutes when a cross from Daniel Podence was half-cleared, only for 19-year-old French wing-back Ait-Nouri to find the corner with a low shot.

Leander Dendoncker crashed a spectacular long-distance effort against the crossbar just before Podence doubled Wolves’ lead on 27 minutes, meeting Pedro Neto’s cross with a side-footed finish for his first goal of the season.

Palace had both a Michy Batshuayi goal and a penalty for a foul on Patrick van Aanholt ruled out for offside following Video Assistant Referee reviews.

Dendoncker and Podence had chances to extend Wolves’ lead after the break, while Wilfried Zaha went close at the other end.

With four minutes remaining, Luka Milivojevic was sent off for a challenge on Joao Moutinho after Martin Atkinson used the Referee Review Area.

Wolves are level with first-placed Everton and second-placed Liverpool on 13 points. Palace are ninth on 10 points.

NEYMAR INJURED AS PSG BOUNCE BACK FROM UCL FIRST DEFEAT TO WIN AGAINST TURKEY SIDE.

Moise Kean scored two goals last night, both through assists from Kylian Mbappe, as Paris St-Germain defeated Istanbul Basaksehir on Wednesday evening. PSG won the UEFA Champions League group stage match 0-2, but suffered a blow as Neymar Jr. suffered an injury.

Everton forward Kean, who is on loan from Premier League leaders Everton, broke the deadlock in the 64th minute to score the first goal of the match and to put PSG ahead. He scored a header off an Mbappe assist, which showed a promising link-up between the two forwards.

Unfortunately for PSG, another attacking star, Neymar Jr., appeared to have pulled a muscle in the middle of the first half. The Brazilian was taken off in the 26th minute looking completely devastated.

Kean and Mbappe picked up the slack as the pair of them manufactured the second PSG goal just before the 80th minute mark.

The hosts looked threatening throughout the first half, but they were unfortunate not to find a breakthrough before Kean shifted the momentum to the Ligue 1 champions.

Keylor Navas had to do some heavy lifting for PSG as Edin Visca threatened his goal after a defensive lapse from the PSG back line.

Navas, who won several Champions League trophies with Real Madrid, showed off his experience as he made another good save against Deniz Turuc to prevent an equaliser. Basaksehir took 16 shots on target, not a big difference from PSG’s 18 attempts. Navas made a real difference between the posts as he kept a clean sheet.

It was a rough game with 11 fouls being called against the Turkish side and 6 against PSG.

Newcomer Kean stole the show after only just recently joining PSG from Everton on Oct. 4. He has already scored a total of four goals for the French side. PSG now has their Champions League campaign back on track after losing their opener against Manchester United last week.

It remains to be seen if Neymar Jr. will be able to bounce back from his injury quickly. The club has yet to release an update.

MAN UTD 5-0 LEIPZIG: MARCUS RASHFORD INSPIRES RED DEVILS TO RESOUNDING VICTORY.

Marcus Rashford was again the star for Manchester United in the Champions League with a hat-trick in a 5-0 thumping of RB Leipzig on Wednesday as Barcelona put their off-field troubles to one side to win 2-0 away to a Juventus side deprived of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Rashford’s late goal earned United a 2-1 victory away to Paris Saint-Germain last week and at Old Trafford the England striker came on as a second-half substitute and scored three times from the 74th minute on in what was a fine win against last season’s semi-finalists.

Paul Pogba released Mason Greenwood to open the scoring in the first half, before the youngster made way for Rashford after the break and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side ran away with the game to make it two wins from two in Group H.

Anthony Martial also netted from the penalty spot as United ruthlessly exposed the side who currently top the German Bundesliga and went clear at the top of the section.

We looked dangerous throughout and that we could score every time we went forward,” said Rashford. “It was a real team performance.”

UCL: JUVENTUS FALL TO MESSI’S BARCELONA WITHOUT CORONA-HIT RONALDO.

Cristiano Ronaldo missed Juventus’ Champions League clash against Lionel Messi’s Barcelona, two weeks after testing positive for coronavirus, with the Italian giants losing 2-0 at home on Wednesday in his absence.

Messi, 33, set up Ousmane Dembele to put Barca in front after quarter of an hour in Turin, adding a second himself from the penalty spot in stoppage time.

Alvaro Morata had three goals ruled out for offside for Juve who played the final five minutes a man down after Merih Demiral was sent off for a second yellow card.

Barcelona are top of Group G with six points after two games with Juventus on three. The reverse fixture takes place at the Camp Nou on December 8.

The 35-year-old Ronaldo, the top scorer in the history of the competition with 130 goals, was furious at missing out.

The Portuguese superstar had needed to test negative 24 hours before the game to take part in his sixth Champions League meeting against Argentine Messi.

They have not faced off since the five-time Ballon d’Or winner left Real Madrid for Juventus in 2018.

Hours before kick-off, Ronaldo posted a photo on Instagram, stating: “Feeling good and healthy! Forza Juve!

Adding a comment for his 241 million Instagram followers on the swab tests used to detect the virus, he said: “PCR IS BULLSHIT.”

He later removed that post.

Ronaldo then posted a video of himself wearing the Juventus jersey running on a treadmill in his home gym, jumping off for his usual goal celebration before giving the thumbs up and wishing his teammates ‘good luck’.

Ronaldo first tested positive for Covid-19 on October 13 while playing with Portugal, and has been in self-isolation since returning to Italy.

He has reportedly tested positive 18 times.

OZIL BACKS RASHFORD’S CHILDREN FREE MEAL, GIVES FREE MEAL TO UK SCHOOL KIDS.

Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil has shown his support for Marcus Rashford’s campaign to end child food poverty by providing 1,400 free lunchtime meals for the rest of the week to schools in London.

Manchester United forward Rashford has campaigned for the UK government to provide food vouchers during school holidays to children who normally receive free meals during term time if their parents receive welfare support.

Ozil has joined up with Barnet Sunday Football League (BSFL), chef Stefan Peppert and German Chefs Catering in Knightsbridge to provide meals to 12 schools in Barnet and surrounding areas.

On Tuesday, the BSFL and schools posted pictures of the meals on Twitter, with Ozil’s logo featuring on the boxes.

“We are very grateful to Mesut Ozil and Stefan Peppert for getting involved with our initiative, and the volunteers on the project who have worked tirelessly throughout,” a BSFL representative revealed.

“We have raised over £3,000 so far, with 1,400 meals per day prepared and delivered to schools.”

The playmaker is out of favour with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and has been left out of the club’s Premier League and Europa League squads.

Ozil’s agent Dr. Erkut Sogut told reporters that Arteta is not telling the truth for claiming the player’s absence is a football decision and said the supporters deserve an honest explanation.

KLOPP UNHAPPY ABOUT SCORES OF LIVERPOOL INJURIES

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp suffered another injury blow with Fabinho joining Virgil van Dijk on the sidelines after picking up a hamstring injury in Tuesday’s Champions League win over Midtjylland.

Midfielder Fabinho has been filling in for Van Dijk in the centre of defence since the Dutchman suffered a serious knee injury in the Merseyside derby against Everton.

“It’s exactly the last thing we needed,” Klopp said, after Fabinho limped off in the first-half of the 2-0 win.

“I know he felt a hamstring, and that’s not good. He said he could have played on but no sprints, which doesn’t help. We will see, we will know more after a scan but clearly it isn’t good,” he added.

With centre-back Joel Matip also ruled out with injury Klopp brought on teenager Rhys Williams to partner Joe Gomez at the back.

“Rhys Williams he’s only 19-years old and I think he’s played more Champions League games than Premier League games — that’s rare,” Klopp added. “We’re doing really well but its a shock for a team because now we have to sort that injury.”

Klopp accepted that the Premier League champions were in a difficult period.

“It was a tough night. It’s a bit like in a marriage, there are good and bad times. It’s not a bad time but it’s a tricky time. 100% we have to stick together and fight harder and that’s what the boys did tonight,” he said.

The injury is likely to rule Fabinho out of Brazil’s November World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela and Uruguay.

Meanwhile, Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson believes Van Dijk will be out until next season.

Asked about his absence, Alisson told newsmen: “He’s important for the team, for all of us, for me too. Unfortunately, we ended up losing Virgil probably for the rest of the competition. We don’t know the set dates yet, anything can happen, but that’s likely, that’s what we have in hand.”

Alisson returned to play at the weekend after being sidelined with a shoulder injury for three weeks.

“To be back, to be one more part within the squad, within the team to be able to help, I’m feeling very happy,” he said. “I believe it also gives confidence to the team. Everyone we can have available now, from now on, it’s important to fight for our goals, which are big.

“It was only three weeks, to me it felt like three months. Being back, being able to help the team… For a player, being left out is the worst part of football, but it is part of the package, we are subject to injuries, nobody wants it, but we’re subject. But I tried to recover in the best way and in the quickest possible way to be back and help my teammates and getting back to the Champions League already.”
