DAVID SILVA STARS AS REAL SOCIEDAD RETURNS TO FIRST ON LA LIGA STANDINGS.

David Silva scored his first goal for Real Sociedad to help them go back to the top of La Liga after a 4-1 win over Celta Vigo.

Silva headed La Real in front at Balaidos for his first goal since he left Manchester City in the summer, and his first in La Liga since he departed Valencia 11 years ago.

Mikel Oyarzabal made it two with his fifth of the season, a tally that also makes him the league’s top scorer so far.

Willian Jose then hit the net twice in the second half, either side of Iago Aspas converting a penalty, which gave Celta brief hope of a comeback.

Celta’s Jose Fontan was sent off for a second yellow card late on, to cap a disappointing afternoon for the home side, who sit 17th, without a win in six games.

But another impressive victory for Real Sociedad means they have won their last four league games on the bounce, with scorelines of 3-0, 3-0, 4-1 and 4-1.

They return to the top of the table, one point ahead Real Madrid, who had temporarily taken first place after their 4-1 win over Huesca on Saturday.

Atletico Madrid are third, three points off the leaders but with two games in hand.

Real Betis had earlier beaten Elche 3-1 to climb to seventh. Elche drop to 10th.

MAN UTD 0-1 ARSENAL: GUNNERS FINALLY WIN AT OLD TRAFFORD.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot as Arsenal beat hosts Manchester United 1-0 on Sunday to secure its first win for 14 years in a Premier League match at Old Trafford.

With both teams playing a cautious game, a foul by United midfielder Paul Pogba turned out to be decisive when he kicked Hector Bellerin’s foot in the United penalty area. Aubameyang sent goalkeeper David De Gea the wrong way with his 69th-minute spot-kick to give Arsenal the lead.

Arsenal hadn’t beaten United away since an FA Cup game in 2015, part of a longstanding run of poor form for the Gunners when facing England’s biggest clubs on the road. Arsenal’s last win at Old Trafford in an EPL game was in 2006, when Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger were the managers and current United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was still playing for the club.

Arsenal had the better chances in a quiet first half Sunday, with Aubameyang narrowly missing a cross at the far post after a mistimed lunge, and Willian brushing the crossbar with a lob. Harry Maguire could have given United the lead in the 55th but his header at a corner went just wide of the left post.

Arsenal needed a slice of luck to cling on to its lead when a mistimed block from Mohamed Elneny bounced off goalkeeper Bernd Leno’s head and onto the post before being cleared.

The defeat leaves United with only seven points from its first six games of the season with fatigue from the extended 2019-20 campaign appearing to play a role.

Arsenal moved closer to the Champions League spots following its first victory in three league games after losses to Manchester City and Leicester.

NEWCASTLE 2-1 EVERTON: CALLUM WILSON DOWNS THE TOFFEES AT ST. JAMES’S PARK.

A second half brace from Callum Wilson helped Newcastle United to all three points against Everton.

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford found himself taken out of the firing line as Toffees boss Carlo Ancelotti handed Robin Olsen a debut.

The Swede made a decent block from Allan Saint-Maximin to help keep the game goalless at half-time.

But Newcastle broke the deadlock in the 56th minute when Callum Wilson converted a penalty after being fouled by Andre Gomes at a corner.

Everton, missing the likes of playmaker James Rodriguez and suspended Brazilian frontman Richarlison, could not find a way back into the match.

Wilson wrapped up victory with a second goal five minutes from time when he slotted in after Ryan Fraser’s cross had deflected up off Everton defender Yerry Mina.

Despite a stoppage-time goal from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Newcastle saw out the closing stages as goalkeeper Karl Darlow tipped a late effort over.

The Toffees remain second, three points behind Merseyside rivals Liverpool, while Newcastle move into the top 10.

GERARD HAILS RANGERS RESILIENCE AFTER GOING NINE POINTS CLEAR.

Steven Gerrard hailed a “big win” at Kilmarnock that answered some major questions but the Rangers boss insisted he would not look at the Scottish Premiership after his side went nine points clear.

James Tavernier’s 19th-minute penalty earned Gers a 1-0 victory and only their second Premiership win at Rugby Park in eight games.

Rangers had suffered three defeats at the Ayrshire venue in the previous two seasons and Gerrard was delighted to see his side hold out amid a spirited second-half show from the hosts.

“That was a big win, a win that we had to work hard for,” he said.

There were a lot of question marks in the build-up to this game, talk about how we’d failed miserably here before and lost after getting ourselves in front.

“Well, we got ourselves in front today and I thought we showed really good resilience and strength and a different side to Rangers.

“I’m extremely proud of the players’ performance and I thought we fully deserved the three points. So we answered those questions today but we’ve got to keep on doing that.

“I’ve got players in that dressing room now who will roll their sleeves up, show resilience and strength, put their bodies on the line.

Winning headers, stopping crosses – they are doing all the dirty side of the game that you need to do if you want to be successful.”

Celtic have two games in hand and there is no chance of Gerrard getting carried away as he searches for the first league title of his career.

“I won’t look at the league table,” he said. “I’ll analyse our performance and speak to the players after a bit of time off.

“This has been a tough week on the back of another big European game. Nobody mentions what we have to give on a Thursday night before we come to places like this.

“But it’s not the stage of the season to be looking at the league table.”

Rangers opened the scoring inside the first 20 minutes for the seventh time in eight league games as they imposed themselves on their opponents.

“We are Rangers, we always want to start in the best possible way,” Gerrard said.

We want to be aggressive. You saw that, we wanted to take the game to Kilmarnock.

“The players are buying into it. We tweaked the way we played here slightly. We didn’t want to overplay, we wanted to make Killie’s defenders as uncomfortable as possible by going a little bit more direct.

“The players have gone out again and carried the plan out superbly well. The only thing I’d say is ‘can we get that second goal and really take the game away from the opponents?’.”

Kilmarnock manager Alex Dyer felt his side’s second-half display was worthy of a point. The closest they came was when Allan McGregor stopped substitute Eamonn Brophy’s drilled free-kick.

Dyer said: “First half, we weren’t at the races. Especially the first 30 minutes. We got a bit more into it after that and ironed a few things out at half time.

“I think we showed them a bit too much respect at the start. But if you go hung-ho against them you will get picked off.

“It’s important to try and find a balance and we did that in the second half. I enjoyed it more and the players did too, because they had more of the ball and passed it better.”

BOBBY CHARLTON DIAGNOSED OF DEMENTIA.

Bobby Charlton, widely considered to be England’s greatest ever footballer, has been diagnosed with dementia.

The 83-year-old, who was England and Manchester United’s record goalscorer until recently, has the disease, reports say, with his wife, Norma, content for his condition to be made public in order to help others with dementia.

Charlton won 106 England caps and was a key member of the 1966 World Cup triumph, while in his club career won three league titles, a European Cup and an FA Cup with United during 17 years at Old Trafford, where he remains on the board of directors. In a statement, the club said: “Everyone at Manchester United is saddened that this terrible disease has afflicted Sir Bobby Charlton and we continue to offer our love and support to Sir Bobby and his family.”

Charlton’s elder brother, Jack, died aged 85 in July following a battle with dementia and lymphoma, with three other members of England’s triumphant 1966 World Cup team also having being diagnosed with dementia or memory loss.

On Friday Charlton’s United teammate, Nobby Stiles, died after a prolonged period with dementia and prostate cancer with Martin Peters and Ray Wilson previously passing away in 2019 and 2018 respectively after having Alzheimer’s disease. A study last year found former footballers 3.5 times more likely to develop dementia.

Gary Lineker, whose 48 England goals places him one behind Charlton’s 49 as the second highest ever scorer, wrote on Twitter: “Yet another hero of our 1966 World Cup winning team has been diagnosed with dementia. Perhaps the greatest of them all, Sir Bobby. This is both very sad and deeply concerning.”

Last year’s study into dementia was commissioned by the Football Association and the Professional Footballers’ Association and led by consultant neuropathologist Dr Willie Stewart of Glasgow University. It assessed the medical records of 7,676 men who played professional football between 1900 and 1976, with their record matched against more than 23,000 individuals from the general population.

The study’s findings came 17 years after former England and West Bromwich Albion striker Jeff Astle died at the age of 59 with what a coroner described as an “industrial injury”. Astle’s daughter Dawn responded to the study’s findings by saying “these players who have suffered dementia must not be a statistic – they must never be forgotten”.

A.VILLA 3-4 SOTON: JAMES WARD-PROWSE SHINES ON BIRTHDAY AS SAINTS CLIMB TO THIRD ON THE LOG

James Ward-Prowse scored two free-kicks and got an assist as Southampton held off a late Aston Villa fightback for a 4-3 away win that sends them third.

Southampton had an early goal overturned for offside following a VAR review but went ahead on 20 minutes when Ward-Prowse’s cross was headed in by Jannik Vestergaard.

Ward-Prowse then netted from two superb set-pieces on a 26th birthday to remember for the Southampton captain.

In the second half Danny Ings crashed in a fourth Saints goal off the crossbar before the striker was forced off injured.

Tyrone Mings pulled one back for Villa from Jack Grealish’s cross and the hosts set up a nervy finish with two goals in stoppage time.

Ollie Watkins converted a penalty won by Grealish who then caught Alex McCarthy unsighted from long range.

But Southampton held on to make their best start after seven matches since 2014/15. Villa drop to sixth after back-to-back defeats.

LIVERPOOL 2-1 WESTHAM: JOTA SCORES WINNER SECOND TIME IN A ROW

Diogo Jota came off the bench to earn Liverpool a 2-1 win over West Ham United, which helped the champions equal an Anfield record.

Pablo Fornals had put West Ham in front on 10 minutes, when he collected a Joe Gomez clearance and struck in a low shot.

Liverpool’s increasing pressure paid off three minutes before half-time thanks to Mohamed Salah’s penalty after the Egyptian had been fouled by Arthur Masuaku.

After the break, Fornals had one shot saved and another blocked by Andrew Robertson.

Shortly after having a goal overturned on 77 minutes after the Video Assistant Referee had spotted a foul in the build-up, Jota scored the winner.

Fellow substitute Xherdan Shaqiri played him in with an exquisite pass to finish and send Liverpool top on 16 points, as they equalled their longest unbeaten home run of 63 league matches.

West Ham are 13th on eight points as their four-match unbeaten run was ended.

KYLE WALKER SCORES TO GIVE CITY VICTORY OVER SHEFFIELD UTD.

Kyle Walker’s first Premier League away goal handed Manchester City a 1-0 win over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

Ferran Torres twice went close for City early on, heading wide before testing Aaron Ramsdale from close range.

City took the lead on 28 minutes with a goal from Walker, a former Sheff Utd player. On his 100th Premier League appearance for City, Walker received Kevin De Bruyne’s pass and shot in low from outside the area.

Sheff Utd’s best spell came around the 70-minute mark as substitute John Lundstram fired over from a well-worked opening.

Ramsdale again denied Bernardo Silva from doubling City’s lead late on, one of seven saves the goalkeeper made.

City are four matches unbeaten and rise to seventh with 11 points. Sheffield United remain on one point in 19th.

BURNLEY 0-3 CHELSEA: ZIYECH INSPIRES BLUES TO IMPRESSIVE VICTORY AT TURF MOOR

Hakim Ziyech scored one goal and created another on his first Premier League start as Chelsea beat Burnley 3-0 at Turf Moor.

Chelsea doubled their lead on 63 minutes when Mason Mount’s corner was powerfully headed in by Kurt Zouma.

Ziyech turned provider seven minutes later for Timo Werner to make it 3-0, with the German only starting after Christian Pulisic was injured in the warm-up.

AIT-NOURI DEBUT GOAL, PODENCE STRIKE HELP WOLVES EASE PAST EAGLES TO LEVEL ON POINTS WITH LEAGUE LEADERS

A debut goal by Rayan Ait-Nouri set Wolverhampton Wanderers on the way to a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, putting them level on points with the Premier League’s top two.

The hosts took the lead on 18 minutes when a cross from Daniel Podence was half-cleared, only for 19-year-old French wing-back Ait-Nouri to find the corner with a low shot.

Leander Dendoncker crashed a spectacular long-distance effort against the crossbar just before Podence doubled Wolves’ lead on 27 minutes, meeting Pedro Neto’s cross with a side-footed finish for his first goal of the season.

Palace had both a Michy Batshuayi goal and a penalty for a foul on Patrick van Aanholt ruled out for offside following Video Assistant Referee reviews.

Dendoncker and Podence had chances to extend Wolves’ lead after the break, while Wilfried Zaha went close at the other end.

With four minutes remaining, Luka Milivojevic was sent off for a challenge on Joao Moutinho after Martin Atkinson used the Referee Review Area.

Wolves are level with first-placed Everton and second-placed Liverpool on 13 points. Palace are ninth on 10 points.
