WATKINS SCORES HATRICK, GREALISH BRACE AS ASTON VILLA STUN LIVERPOOL IN 7-2 GAME

A perfect hat-trick from Ollie Watkins fired Aston Villa to second place after a sensational 7-2 win over champions Liverpool.

The Villans led after only four minutes when Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian conceded possession to Jack Grealish, who teed up Watkins for a simple finish.

Villa’s lead was doubled when Watkins cut in and slammed a shot into the top corner on 22 minutes.

Mohamed Salah’s smart shot reduced the deficit on 33 minutes but two minutes later, John McGinn’s deflected effort restored Villa’s two-goal cushion.

Watkins’ hat-trick header made the score 4-1 and 10 minutes after half-time, Ross Barkley added a fifth.

Salah pulled another goal back on the hour but Grealish’s double on 66 and 75 minutes completed the comprehensive victory.

Villa now have three wins from three while Liverpool are fifth, also on nine points.

HARRY KANE SCORES HAT TRICK AS SPURS ADVANCE TO EUROPA LEAGUE GROUP STAGES.

Tottenham Hotspur earned their way into the Europa League group stages with a comfortable 7-2 victory over Maccabi Haifa in a qualifying playoff on Thursday.

Harry Kane collected a hat trick, Giovani Lo Celso scored a brace while Lucas Moura and Dele Alli completed the easy win in London.

Kane needed only two minutes to get his first of the day, then added strikes in the 56th minute and 74th minutes — the latter coming from the penalty spot — to complete his trio of goals.

Lo Celso scored his goals just three minutes apart — in the 36th and 39th minutes — and Lucas and Alli converted theirs in the 20th and 90th minutes, respectively.

Tjaronn Chery and Nikita Rukavytsya scored the goals for the visitors.

The lopsided win means Jose Mourinho’s men will be included in Friday’s group stage draw.

CALVERT LEWIN HITS ANOTHER HATRICK AS EVERTON BEAT WESTHAM TO REACH CARABAO CUP Q/FINALS.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin wrote another chapter in his breathtaking start to this season with a hat-trick as Everton won their sixth straight game from the start of a campaign for the first time in 82 years.

This wasn’t as straight forward for Everton as the scoreline suggests.

Indeed the Blues were at their most fluent before half-time and were unlucky to lead only 1-0 at the interval.

Robert Snodgrass equalised immediately after the restart – which angered Everton.

They’ve been here before of late, pegged back by both West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace before running out winners.

Everton promptly hammered on West Ham’s door and crashed through when Richarlison meandered across the edge of the box before unleashing a drive which deflected off Declan Rice and wrong-footed Darren Randolph.

Richarlison was soon forced off injured, however and Everton will be keeping their fingers crossed following problems for three players.

The brilliant pair of Richarlison and Allan went off inside eight hurtful second-half minutes – after Jonjoe Kenny’s enforced withdrawal four minutes before the break.

It was Richarlison’s replacement Alex Iwobi who did a lot of the leg work for Everton’s third goal.

Collecting a pass from Gylfi Sigurdsson, he crafted room to shoot, striking the far post.

The ball rebounded for Calvert-Lewin to turn home.

And when Calvert-Lewin completed his second treble in 11 days, Everton were guaranteed their Carabao Cup fourth-round place.

Sigurdsson was the provider, forcing a pass through a narrow gap. Calvert-Lewin prodded past Randolph for his eighth goal of the campaign.

From Michael Keane’s carefully lifted pass from his own half, through Calvert-Lewin’s gorgeous touch to pull the ball from the sky, to the striker’s classy finish, Everton’s first goal was a work of art.

Calvert-Lewin left Declan Rice trailing to fasten onto the pass from Keane, who skilfully avoided a challenge from Manuel Lanzini before releasing his teammate.

The Everton forward used his left instep to control, steadying himself before easing his right-footed finish past Randolph.

Carlo Ancelotti’s teamsheet read like a statement of intent, James Rodriguez and Allan both included for their first Carabao Cup appearances.

And James was in sumptuous touch, gliding between wings to feed a succession of wonderful passes to his forwards.

One ball inside Ben Johnson for Richarlison defied science and drew audible gasps from those fortunate enough to be inside Goodison Park.

Richarlison gave it the finish it deserved, too, but the Brazilian had strayed marginally offside before placing the ball in the net.

James was having fun running with the ball, his opponents backing off every time.

Snodgrass got in a tangle and ended up on the deck trying to halt the Colombian in one instance.

When James went deeper, he fed a ball down the line for Calvert-Lewin – repeatedly running down young right-back Johnson’s channel.

Calvert-Lewin cut inside but sent his strike from 18 yards whizzing over the top.

For all the magical moments from James and Richarlison, it was Everton’s third South American in Allan who drew an appreciative roar from his watching teammates with a terrific challenge to thwart Felipe Anderson on the break.

Anderson had forced Jordan Pickford into a save down to his right on seven minutes but there was little from West Ham going forwards.

Lanzini tumbled in the box but was penalised for handball and Sebastien Haller couldn’t stretch far enough to meet a terrific Aaron Creswell delivery from the left.

Another Creswell cross, moments before half-time, was headed beyond the far post by Lanzini.

The visitors were unsure at the back, Creswell keeping Randolph honest with a hard-hit backpass and Fabian Balbuena heaving a sigh of relief when his gift of possession to Calvert-Lewin came to nothing.

West Ham’s hesitancy was understandable nevertheless. If it wasn’t James gunning for them, it was Richarlison.

Scorer of three goals in his past two games – including a double in the previous round at Fleetwood Town – Richarlison began here with a surge into the box which required three defenders to stop.

He danced through again on 20 minutes, slipping inside Balbuena and opting to shoot early with the outside of his left boot.

Randolph did very well to scoop the ball over at close range.

The one disappointment for Everton in the opening 45 minutes came with the injury to Kenny, who insisted on staying on the pitch to avoid leaving his team a man short defending a corner before hobbling off.

The home team sustained another blow scarcely 20 seconds after the restart.

West Ham’s equaliser was simple in its execution but an excellent strike from Snodgrass.

Anderson collected an overhit cross on the left and fed the ball back for Snodgrass on the edge of the box.

The Scot met it first time with a shot which arced across Pickford and into the right corner.

Everton responded with a Richarlison strike from the left of the box against the base of Randolph’s right-post and a shot from distance hit too high by Calvert-Lewin.

Allan was brilliant again to scupper Anderson on the counter, then it was James and Richarlison back to the fore, combining to supply Gylfi Sigurdsson in the middle of the penalty area.

Sigurdsson’s shot was firm but repelled by the excellent Randolph.

The goalkeeper was stranded soon after, though, Randolph initially shifting left when Richarlison let fly from 18 yards – but undone by a deflection off Rice’s back which sent the ball on a trajectory down the middle of goal.

Richarlison’s night was ended when he fell awkwardly, the South American replaced by Alex Iwobi.

The nature of these games, winner-takes-all and no extra-time meant West Ham would inevitably begin throwing caution to the wind.

A cluster of claret-and-blue shirts were waiting when Andriy Yarmolneko headed into the middle after Snodgrass dug out a cross.

The ball dropped for Lanzini but he dragged his effort wide.

Pickford athletically helped over an effort from Haller after the Frenchman controlled on his chest and aimed an overhead kick.

With Richarlison and Allan off, it appeared Everton were set for a backs-to-the wall job to see this out.

The red-hot Calvert-Lewin emphatically dismissed that notion.

Everton have scored 12 times in three games in this competition with a +9 goal difference.

FULHAM 0-3 A.VILLA: VICTORIOUS VILLA AT CRAVEN COTTAGE MAINTAIN 100% START TO THE SEASON.

First-half goals from Jack Grealish and Conor Hourihane set Aston Villa on their way to back-to-back victories as they claimed a comfortable 3-0 win at Fulham.

Villa took only four minutes to open their account when John McGinn picked out Grealish after Fulham failed to clear their defensive lines and the playmaker slotted the ball home.

The visitors doubled their advantage 11 minutes later. McGinn was again the provider, this time finding Hourihane whose right-foot shot was beyond goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.

Tyrone Mings extended Villa’s lead just after half-time, steering home Hourihane’s free-kick.

Bobby De Cordova-Reid had a 56th-minute close-range effort ruled out following a VAR review and Aleksandar Mitrovic twice went close with headers but there was to be no way through for the hosts.

Fulham remain without a point and are at the foot of the table while Villa have won both of their opening matches.

DIOGO JOTA SCORES ON REDS PREMIER LEAGUE DEBUT AS LIVERPOOL BEAT ARSENAL AT ANFIELD.

First-half goals from Sadio Mane and Andrew Robertson plus a late Diogo Jota strike on his Premier League debut for Liverpool helped the Reds continue their winning start to 2020/21 with a 3-1 victory over Arsenal.

After Trent Alexander-Arnold had a 22nd-minute drive deflected onto the woodwork, Arsenal took the lead on 24 minutes when Robertson played Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ cross into the path of Alexandre Lacazette who scored.

Two minutes and 27 seconds later Liverpool were back on level terms when Mohamed Salah’s shot was parried by Bernd Leno into the path of Mane, who made no mistake from close range.

Robertson then put the Reds ahead on 34 minutes, stealing in unmarked at the back post to fire home Alexander-Arnold’s deep cross.

Lacazette had a superb chance to claim an equaliser but after being played through on goal, he was denied by Alisson.

Jurgen Klopp’s side then made the points safe two minutes from time when substitute Jota marked his Premier League debut with a driven finish from the edge of the area.

Liverpool have started the season with three successive wins while this was the first defeat of the campaign for Arsenal.

BENFICA ANNOUNCE THE TRANSFER OF RUBEN DIAS TO MAN CITY.

Benfica have announced that they have agreed a deal to sell the centre-back Ruben Dias to Manchester City for €68m plus a potential €3.6m in add-ons. Nicolas Otamendi will join Benfica or a fee of €15m.

Dias, the Portugal international, has agreed a five-year contract with Pep Guardiola’s side, while Otamendi will join Benfica on a three-year deal. The Argentinian leaves City after five seasons at the Etihad Stadium.

Dias will now fly to Manchester to complete a medical and should be unveiled this week. The 23-year-old is a product of Benfica’s academy and has 19 international caps. The defender was named man of the match in Portugal’s 2019 Nations League final victory against the Netherlands.

Guardiola has already recruited Nathan Ake this summer in a bid to strengthen his defence. City had been keen on Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly but were unwilling to meet the Italian club’s €80m asking price. On Sunday they lost 5-2 to Leicester City.

Dias’s arrival may mean Eric Garcia is allowed to join Barcelona. The centre-back wants to move with his City contract expiring next summer, and the La Liga side are expected to step up their interest. Jean-Clair Todibo may be sold to raise funds, with Everton and Fulham reportedly interested in the French defender.

MANCITY SET TO COMPLETE RUBEN DIAS DEAL FROM BENFICA.

Manchester City are set to sign Portugal defender Ruben Dias from Benfica for £65m his week.

City’s Argentina centre-back Nicolas Otamendi, 32, will go the other way for about £13.7m in a separate transfer.

Manager Pep Guardiola has wanted a right-sided central defender since Vincent Kompany retired last summer.

Dias, 23, was captain for Benfica’s win over Moreirense on Saturday and hugged team-mates and sporting director Rui Costa at the final whistle.

After the match, Dias – who had scored his 12th goal for the club in 133 appearances – told Benfica TV: “It was a very important game for me and being able to mark it with a goal was very special.

“I believe that everyone already has an idea why I hugged Rui Costa.”

While Dias’ transfer is yet to be completed, only a few minor details remain to be agreed.

The failure to secure a replacement for former skipper Kompany was seen as a major reason for City not putting up more of a challenge to Liverpool in last season’s Premier League title race.

Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly, 29, was initially City’s top target this summer, but the Italian club wanted £80m for the Senegal defender, which City were not prepared to pay.

VARDY STARS WITH HATRICK AS LEICESTER THRASH MAN CITY.

A Jamie Vardy hat trick and goals from James Maddison and Youri Tielemans helped Leicester City beat Manchester City 5-2 on Sunday.

Ederson could do little in the City goal as Vardy and Tielemans fired three penalties past him. Vardy and Maddison added two from open play while goals from Riyad Mahrez and Nathan Ake did little for City’s hopes.

City had not conceded five goals in a home game since February 2003 against Arsenal and it was the first time their boss Pep Guardiola had seen a side he is managing concede five in what was his 686th game in the dugout.

The hosts came out of the blocks the much better team at the Etihad Stadium out of the blocks the much better team, opening the scoring through former Leicester City player Mahrez on four minutes.

A perfectly weighted corner from Kevin De Bruyne was headed out of the box by Leicester but only as far as Mahrez who, unmarked, waited for the ball to bounce before curling it beautifully into the top right corner with his left foot.

City went on to enjoy over 80% of the possession in the opening 25 minutes but failed to capitalise on that time with a goal.

Rodri appeared to have scored after 35 minutes when he got his head to a De Bruyne free kick but replays showed he was offside and the goal was disallowed.

It was a frantic minute as Leicester immediately went on the attack. Harvey Barnes ran the ball down the pitch and put a good ball into Vardy who went down in the box under pressure from Kyle Walker. Michael Oliver pointed to the spot and the 2019-20 Golden Boot winner converted.

Vardy added to his tally nine minutes into the second half when Timothy Castagne put a low cross into the box and he got in front of his man to chip the ball over Ederson.

Eric Garcia conceded a second City penalty on 57 minutes when he brought Vardy down in the box. The 33-year-old stepped up once again and while Ederson went the right way, there was no way he could stop Vardy’s fast and low shot going into the bottom right corner.

Maddison added Leicester’s fourth on 77 minutes after receiving the ball in space on the left. He cut inside and curled the ball past Ederson with his right foot.

Ake managed to pull one back for City on 84 minutes after he headed the ball into the net from a set piece but it wasn’t to be enough as Tielemans converted a penalty moments later.

“We have set up to infuriate them and it has worked a treat. We knew if we stuck to our plan we would get some chances,” Vardy said after the game.

“It’s always cat and mouse. It’s a gamble both ways. I know where I am going to put it and he knows where he is diving. [I’m] over the moon to get the goals.

“It’s only a start. The way we finished last season was not good enough so we have to keep it going now.”

Despite looking uncomfortable in his movement in the latter stages of the match, Vardy confirmed that it was a minor bone issue that was niggling at him and not something more serious.

The defeat snapped City’s 11-match unbeaten home run in the league dating back to last season, while it was also their first defeat in an opening top-flight home game since a 2-1 loss to Southampton in 1989.

BOWEN HITS BRACE AS WESTHAM PUTS FOUR PAST WOLVES.

Jarrod Bowen scored twice as West Ham United picked up their first win of the Premier League season with a 4-0 success against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Hammers, who had lost their four previous matches against Wolves without scoring, went 1-0 up on 17 minutes. A quick free-kick from Pablo Fornals picked out Bowen, who expertly curled a low shot beyond Rui Patricio.

Fornals blasted over from close range in an opening 45 minutes dominated by the home side.

West Ham doubled their tally in the 57th minute when Bowen tapped in a loose ball after Fornals’ long-range effort hit the post.

The Hammers added a third when Tomas Soucek’s header from Aaron Cresswell’s corner was deflected in for an own goal by Raul Jimenez.

Sebastien Haller headed in a fourth in stoppage time, meaning West Ham and Wolves now both have one victory from their opening three matches.

HOFFEINHEIM ENDS BAYERN 23 GAMES UNBEATEN RUN.

European champions Bayern Munich suffered their first defeat since December when their 23-match winning run was ended by a shock 4-1 Bundesliga defeat at Hoffenheim on Sunday.

Hoffenheim, the current league leaders, raced into a 2-0 lead with early goals by defender Ermin Bicakcic and striker Munas Dabbur.

Although Joshua Kimmich gave Bayern a lifeline just before the break, Croatia international striker Andrej Kramaric netted a second-half goal and converted a late penalty to seal the win.

It was the first time Bayern have lost under head coach Hansi Flick in any competition since going down 2-1 to Borussia Moenchengladbach on Dec. 7, 2019.

Hoffenheim coach Sebastian Hoeness is the nephew of Bayern’s honorary president Uli Hoeness and left Munich’s reserves in July to take over at the new Bundesliga leaders.

Bayern looked tired in Hoffenheim, showing the effects of being taken to extra time in the UEFA Super Cup on Thursday before beating Sevilla 2-1 in Budapest.

The defeat brings to an abrupt end Bayern’s run of 23 consecutive wins, a record for a club in one of Europe’s five main leagues, surpassing Real Madrid’s 22 straight wins between September and December 2014.

With Robert Lewandowski rested ahead of Wednesday’s German Super Cup showdown at home to Borussia Dortmund — the chance to win a fifth title in 2020 — his 19-year-old understudy Joshua Zirkzee struggled to spark Bayern’s attack.

Hoffenheim took full advantage of Munich’s lethargy with Bicakcic giving them the lead on 16 minutes when he out-leapt Corentin Tolisso at a corner and headed past Manuel Neuer.

The hosts doubled their lead when Bayern defender Benjamin Pavard tried to snuff out a counter-attack, but his pass rolled into the path of Israeli striker Dabbur, who held his nerve to chip the ball over Neuer on 24 minutes.

It was the first time Bayern have been two goals down since they lost 5-1 at Eintracht Frankfurt in November 2019, a defeat which cost Flick’s predecessor Niko Kovac his job.

Bayern knuckled down and went in 2-1 down at the break after Leroy Sane’s superb pass across the box eventually landed at the feet of Kimmich who fired home superbly from the edge of the box on 36 minutes.

Hoffenheim could have had a third goal as their Croatia striker Andrei Kramaric clipped the crossbar after his shot beat Neuer on the stroke of half-time. Flick responded by beefing up his side by bringing on Lewandowski and central midfielder Leon Goretzka for Zirkzee and Pavard respectively on 57 minutes.

Lewandowski went close with a couple of half chances but Kramaric made sure of the win when he finished a counter-attack with a stunning strike on 77 minutes. With the visitors growing ever more desperate, Bayern conceded a penalty in added time when Neuer brought down replacement forward Ihlas Bebou in the area and Kramaric converted the resulting penalty.
