WOLVES HIT WITH UEFA SANCTIONS OVER FFP RULES

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been fined and slapped with a squad limit in European competition next season after breaching FFP rules, it has been revealed.

Wolves have been ordered to stump up €200,000 for contravening profitability and sustainability rules.

UEFA say the fine will rise by a further €400,000 if the club does not get its finances in order by the year ending 2021.

Wolves have also been told it will have to stick to a 23-man squad cap, rather 25, if the club qualifies for next season’s Champions League, by winning the Europa League later this month.

They must also comply with a set spending pattern after reaching a settlement with UEFA.

UEFA’s Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) Adjudicatory Chamber said the club must ‘report a maximum break-even deficit of €30 million (£27 million) in the financial year ending 2020’

The club has pledged to record ‘an aggregate break-even result’ for the financial years ending in 2019, 2020 and 2021, in accordance with UEFA’s directive.

And it has also vowed that for ‘the financial year ending in 2020, its employee benefits expenses are restricted’, the Chamber said.

The fine and squad cap will not be viewed as too debilitating by the Wolves hierarchy.

The real issue is how the £27 million losses Wolves are restricted to in the 2020/21 season, impact on the club’s transfer budget and approach to the summer window.

As perilous as the situation has become for UEFA to take this step, it’s thought the club is on relatively strong financial footing having reportedly made a £20 million profit last season despite spending big.

FFP rules vary across different leagues and competitions, with the Premier League adopting a very different policy on spending to the English Football League.

UEFA’s interpretation is to ‘prohibit clubs from making an aggregate loss in excess of €30 million over three seasons’.

The application and enforcement of these rules is the responsibility of the UEFA Club Financial Control Body, which can ‘impose a wide range of penalties for non-compliance, including bans from European competitions’, with final decisions of the CFCB appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne.

CHELSEA’S CHRISTIAN PULISIC OUT FOR 6 WEEKS; COULD MISS START OF THE SEASON.

Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic faces six weeks out with a right hamstring injury that could see him miss the start of the English Premier League.

The American was injured last Saturday in the 2-1 loss to Arsenal in the FA Cup final after scoring at Wembley Stadium.

“With Christian Pulisic I think it´s going to be touch and go for the start of the season,” Chelsea manager Frank Lampard said on Friday. “We´re probably looking around a six-week injury. So with six weeks, doing the maths, it gets very close to, and is probably into, the start of the new season. But we have to treat it right, the injury.”

The premier league season is set to begin September 12.

“In the big scheme of things with Christian, when he reflects on his first season, the improvement levels coming here when you think of the goals and assists he´s had this year, it´s the best of his career,” Lampard said. “And that´s his first year in the Premier League. From where he´s gone at the start to how he´s ended up and how he has played in the restart, he should be very happy, and that´s down to his work.

So we´ll get him fit, and get him ready. If he misses the first one or two games of the season, then we´ll have a firing Christian hopefully as hungry as he looked for the restart.”

Chelsea’s season continues in the Champions League, with the London club trying to overturn a 3-0 deficit against Bayern Munich in the pandemic-delayed round of 16 on Saturday.

MANCHESTER UNITED READY TO WELCOME OFFERS FOR JESSE LINGARD

Manchester United are ready to listen to offers for Jesse Lingard with the England international deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford despite his recent goal-scoring form.

The 27-year-old has struggled for game time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season, making nine Premier League starts but only one since the turn of the year.

The arrival of Bruno Fernandes in January and the emergence of Mason Greenwood as a first team starter have seen Lingard slip further down the pecking order and his chances of starting big games are now very slim.

The England World Cup star has taken his chances to shine in recent weeks. coming off the bench to score in the final Premier League game of the season against Leicester and then netting against LASK in the Europa League earlier this week.

Two goals in two games has not been enough to keep the United hierarchy that he should stay, though, and he is available for transfer this summer, according to the Guardian.

A price has not been mentioned, but with United looking to do a deal and many clubs struggling economically due to the coronavirus crisis, it will almost certainly be below the £30m mark.

Lingard has one year left on his contract at Old Trafford, although the club have the option to extend it by another year, which they may do if a deal cannot be struck and they do not want to risk losing him on a free next summer.

The midfielder had hinted at a United stay, or at least that he wanted to remain at Old Trafford in an Instagram post last month.

‘Im starting with the man in the mirror im asking him to change his ways,’ wrote Lingard.

‘This season has been difficult for so many reasons. I lost who I was as a player and person, but I never wanted to give up, I knew who I really was on and off the pitch and knew that having been there before I could get there again.

‘This meant working harder than I’d ever done before and trusting in those around me that they knew how to best help me achieve that. I know the fans have been frustrated but in all this time my love for this club and everyone connected to it has never left me.

This team, this club is my family and I will continue to keep working harder than ever to help this team achieve its goals.

NORWICH CITY REJECT LIVERPOOL BID FOR JAMAL LEWIS

Manager Jurgen Klopp has earmarked the Canaries defender as the ideal deputy for Andy Robertson on the left side of his defence with the 22-year-old impressing during his maiden season in the Premier League last term.

It was revealed earlier this week that Lewis was on the Reds’ radar with the Premier League champions willing to go to around £10m for the Northern Ireland international.

Norwich are hoping to get around £20million for one of their stars of last season with negotiations expected to continue with the premier league champions.

The Reds were hoping a substantial sell-on clause would be enough to see the club’s sporting director, Stuart Webber, accept the initial offer.

Liverpool were mindful that Lewis’s status as backup to Scotland captain Robertson could prove a sticking point in making the premier agree to a move.

Lewis is eager to work with Klopp after seeing him turn Liverpool from a mid-table side upon his arrival in October 2015 to one that is the current world, European and English champions.

With Lewis’s heart set on a move to Anfield this summer, the Reds feel they will eventually see Norwich do business as Daniel Farke begins the rebuild following their relegation from the top flight last term.

BAYER LEVERKUSEN ENDS RANGERS EUROPA DREAM.

There was no redemption in the Rhineland as Rangers’ Europa League campaign was finally ended by a 1-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.

Steven Gerrard’s team were made to wait five months for another shot at the German giants but the damage done in March’s 3-1 first-leg defeat at Ibrox proved too much to recover.

Peter Bosz’ impressive Bundesliga outfit will now march into Monday’s quarter-final shootout with Inter Milan in nearby Dusseldorf after Moussa Diaby’s early second-half strike sealed a 4-1 aggregate triumph.

The coronavirus crisis may have put the second leg at the Bay Arena on ice for almost 150 days but Leverkusen remained red hot.

Gerrard would have loved to have had the option of spicing up his line-up with summer recruits Leon Balogun, Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten but all three were ineligible.

Instead he opted to give Brandon Barker his chance following an impressive pre-season campaign, while Filip Helander’s fitness levels were also put to the test as the defender came in for the first time since injuring his foot in December’s Betfred Cup final.

Rangers’ game plan was clear. Fall back into the trusty defensive shape which has served them so well through their previous 17 games of this 13-month European campaign before using Barker and Ryan Kent’s pace to spring on the counter.

They had four early chances to test that ploy out but on each occasion a final pass let them down.

The Light Blues needed to be utterly ruthless if they were to grab the three away goals required to overturn the tie but they went in at half-time just grateful that their slick hosts had been in a forgiving mood.

Helander failed to deal with a cross from Lars Bender on 16 minutes and £70million-rated Chelsea target Kai Havertz almost made the Swede pay as he rattled a first-time strike off Allan McGregor’s bar.

Havertz’s quality was clear as he glided across the pitch but he should have netted seven minutes later as Exequiel Palacios sent the playmaker racing through a static Gers defence, only for the 21-year-old to tug wide.

Helander, looking strong despite eight months out, was smarter on his feet two minutes before the break as he leapt in to block at Florian Wirtz’s feet after Leverkusen had hit Rangers on a lightning quick counter-attack.

With sweltering 32 degree heat at kick-off, it had been a taxing first 45 minutes for the Scots as Leverkusen dominated with 70 per cent possession.

The Colombian made way for Greg Stewart with quarter of an hour left following a thoroughly ineffective display which just about summed up his 2020 so far.

The full-time whistle brought the curtain down on a campaign from which Gers can still take huge pride after battling through to the last 16 from the first round of qualifiers.

But Gerrard will not have to wait long to see his team back testing themselves in continental action, with Rangers due to enter the new season’s qualifiers on 17 September.

SARRI QUESTIONED OVER JUVE FUTURE DESPITE SERIE A VICTORY.

Juventus coach Maurizio Sarri was still being questioned about his future with the Turin side on Thursday despite leading them to a ninth successive Serie A title last month.

Sarri’s side staggered over the Serie A finish line and now turn their attention to the Champions League, where they host Olympique Lyonnais in a round of 16, second leg match on Friday The match was due to be played in March but postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lyon have a 1-0 lead and Sarri was asked during a pre-match news conference if he thought that his future could be decided on Friday.

“I think that is painting our directors as amateurs,” he replied.

“I think the choice has been made, regardless of the result of tomorrow’s game. That question suggests that they can get carried away on an emotional wave in the same way as fans do.

“But if they’ve already decided to get a new coach, tomorrow won’t make any difference, nor will a victory.”

Sarri said he did not read or listen to any of the critics and pointed out that the COVID-19 outbreak, which halted the league for three months and forced remaining games to be played behind closed doors, had made it the most difficult Serie A in history.

“Juventus is a club which is used to winning and therefore people can be a little blase about it which is absolutely wrong in my opinion,” he said.

“Winning should always be treated as a wonderful and extraordinary event.”

SEVILLA 2-0 ROMA: EUROPA LEAGUE MASTERS BOOK QUARTER FINAL PLACE IN GRAND STYLE.

Despite the global pandemic drastically hampering their European plans, it seems nobody knows how to do the Europa League better than Sevilla.

The Spanish giants eased themselves back into familiar territory with an impressive victory over Italian royalty Roma on Thursday evening, taking victory in the one-off fixture to book their place in the next round.

Sergio Reguilon opened the scoring after just 20-minutes played for Sevilla, as Julen Lopetegui’s side wasted no time in imposing themselves on the contest.

The style was turned on as full-back Reguilon broke the deadlock in spectacular style, taking the ball from Ever Banega before gliding past Gianluci Mancini and rifling a distance effort past helpless goalkeeper Pau Lopez.

Echoing voices could be heard reverberating around the MSV-Arena in Duisburg, Germany, as the two sides battled hard to claw an advantage in the unusual fixture.

But it was Sevilla who would strike the next blow, doubling their lead shortly after the half-time interval.

Youssef En-Nesyri was on hand to turn in from close range, following a swift section of build-up and a pinpoint fizzing cross from Lucas Ocampos.

BOATENG WON’T SAY NO TO PREMIER LEAGUE MOVE

Bayern Munich defender, Jerome Boatenf has said he will not mind a move to the English premier league.

The German has suffered a consistent injury setback in recent times despite being a key player for the Bundesliga giants.

“There were hard times,” Jérôme Boateng says as his mind drifts back to Bayern Munich’s wobbles at the start of the season. “It’s like being a child. As a child if I had no confidence, if you don’t get trust from your friends, then you lose the joy of the game. That’s what happens now, even when I’m older.”

Boateng, one of the finest defenders of his generation, could feel the spark ebbing away. Bayern were on the slide under Niko Kovac, a coach struggling to connect with a champion squad, and time finally appeared to have caught up with the old guard. Thomas Müller and Manuel Neuer were under pressure and Boateng, aware that people were starting to view him as a fading force, wondered whether a change of scenery was required.

“There were thoughts at some stage,” he says. “Do I need to change now? I won’t play for ever and I want to enjoy football. I knew I still trained good and in my opinion not everybody has to have the same opinion, I deserved a chance to play and to show that I can play at a high level. At some point if you see it’s not working between the sides then you have to make a clean cut. A nice cut, not a dirty cut.”

Yet Bayern, languishing in seventh place in the Bundesliga at one stage, have come roaring back since replacing Kovac with Hansi Flick in December. They have won their eighth successive title, thumped Bayer Leverkusen in the German Cup final and are one of the favourites to win the Champions League before the second leg of their last-16 tie against Chelsea at the Allianz Arena on Saturday night.
