SPAIN DISPLACE SWITZERLAND ON PENALTIES TO REACH EURO 2020 SEMIS

Spain squeezed through a penalty shootout to reach the semi-finals of Euro 2020 after goalkeeper Yann Sommer’s heroics for 10-man Switzerland proved in vain.

Switzerland’s hero of the previous round when they knocked out world champions France in similar fashion was on top form again during 120 minutes and although he saved one in a dramatic conclusion his side missed three out of four spot-kicks.

There was huge relief for Spain, into their first semi-final since 2012 when they won their second successive European Championship, having wasted a host of chances.

After scoring five in their last two matches Luis Enrique’s side retreated into their shell somewhat with a much more circumspect performance and despite the advantage of Denis Zakaria’s own goal they did not really press hard until extra-time.

That was forced by Xherdan Shaqiri’s 68th-minute goal to make it 1-1 but after Remo Freuler’s harsh red card the Swiss had no option but to see out the game and hope for the best in a shootout.

Sergio Busquets hit a post and Rodri’s effort was saved by Sommer but Dani Olmo and Gerard Moreno scored and with Fabian Schar, Manuel Akanji and Ruben Vargas all failing it left Mikel Oyarzabal to send Spain through.

Ominously, each time Spain have progressed past the quarter-finals they have gone on to lift the trophy but if they are to add to their three titles they will need to be sharper up front against either Italy or Belgium in the last four at Wembley.

MAN UNITED CLOSING IN ON VARANE DEAL

Manchester United are close to finalizing a deal for Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, sources say.

The France international, whose contract at Bernabeu is due to expire in June 2022, is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s top defensive target and sources have said that United are ready to move for the 28-year-old after receiving encouragement that Madrid are prepared to negotiate a realistic fee for the player.

United will complete their first major piece of transfer business this summer by signing Borussia Dortmund and England forward Jadon Sancho for £72.9 million ($100m) once the 21-year-old’s involvement at Euro 2020 comes to a conclusion, but a move for an experienced defender is the next issue to be addressed by football director John Murtough.

A source at Manchester United confirmed there had been “some discussions” regarding Varane, but added that no time frame for a transfer is in place.

United had been considering Villarreal’s defender Pau Torres as an alternative, but efforts to sign Varane have now been stepped up following France’s surprise exit from Euro 2020 in the wake of Tuesday’s round-of-16 defeat against Switzerland.

Despite Varane’s diminishing contract, Madrid had initially valued the centre-half at €70m ($83m) — a figure that United regarded as too high for a player entering the final year of his contract.

But with Madrid needing to offload players to fund a rebuild of Carlo Ancelotti’s squad, United are confident that a deal can be done for a fee in the region of €50m ($59m).

Madrid could use the money raised by the departure of Varane to move for Torres, who has a €65m ($77m) release clause at Europa League winners Villarreal.

The 24-year-old has impressed for Spain at Euro 2020 and with Varane set to follow Sergio Ramos out of the Bernabeu — Ramos is leaving as a free agent — Madrid need reinforcements at the back.

Madrid’s interest in Torres could be placed on hold for 12 months, however, if the Spanish club opt instead to pursue moves for Erling Haaland or Kylian Mbappe.

Madrid’s financial position is complicated, and a “galactico” signing would mean Torres would have to wait until 2022.

Sources told ESPN the defender remains a Madrid target though, “whether it’s for now or for next year,” and Torres’ preference would be to stay in Spain rather than try the Premier League.

Villarreal have also received interest in star forward Gerard Moreno, but the club are in a healthy financial state and do not need to offload players this summer.

SERGIO RAMOS NEARS PSG MOVE ON FREE TRANSFER

Paris Saint-Germain are in advanced negotiations to sign Sergio Ramos on a free transfer after the defender’s Real Madrid contract expired on Wednesday, sources have confirmed.

Ramos announced last month that he would leave Madrid after failing to reach an agreement to extend his 16-year stay in the Spanish capital.

Sources close to the deal said that things have advanced throughout the week and a final decision is expected in the coming days.

Ramos wants a two-year deal but PSG are only offering one with a second year as an option to be triggered by mutual content. His wages should also be lower than what he was earning in Spain and what he would have earned had he stayed at the Bernabeu.

The Spain international, who turned 35 in March, didn’t strike an agreement with Madrid due to discrepancies over the length of the deal.

Los Blancos were only willing to offer one year and by the time Ramos agreed to accept the club’s proposal he was told the deadline had expired.

ESPN previously reported that both Manchester City and Bayern Munich are also monitoring Ramos’ situation but various sources said he prefers PSG’s offer.

Sporting director Leonardo presented a project that four-time Champions League winner Ramos considered “ambitious,” sources say.

Ramos views Paris as a more attractive destination for his family and believes the adaption process would be much quicker in France, where he would link up with former teammates Angel Di Maria and Keylor Navas, as well as close friend Neymar who has been on the phone to convince him to accept PSG’s offer.

Sources detail how PSG coach Mauricio Pochettino has asked the club to strengthen in defence after they missed out on the Ligue 1 title to Lille and were beaten by Manchester City in the Champions League semifinal.

Pochettino has Presnel Kimpembe, Marquinhos, Abdou Diallo and Thilo Kehrer, all aged below 28, and feels the side lacks leadership and experience at the back to compete at the top level.

At first, PSG didn’t view signing a new centre-back as a priority but the emergence of Ramos on a free transfer has been viewed as an opportunity not to be missed.

PSG had been tracking Ramos’ situation throughout the season but didn’t want to make a move until his future at Madrid was decided. Therefore, it was only on June 16 that sporting director Leonardo stepped up negotiations.

The French side have already signed midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum on a free transfer this summer and are close to securing deals for goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and Inter Milan right-back Achraf Hakimi for around €70 million.

RAFAEL BENITEZ PROMISES TO FIGHT FOR EVERTON AS HE CLARIFIES ‘SMALL CLUB’ JIBE

New manager Rafael Benitez has pledged to show the same fighting spirit for Everton as he did for Liverpool when he made his “small club” comments.

The Spaniard’s appointment on a three-year contract, becoming only the second man to manage both Merseyside clubs and the first ex-Reds boss to do so, is a controversial one by owner Farhad Moshiri.

He antagonised fans with his “small club” jibe after a 2007 Merseyside derby and although in subsequent years he has sought to clarify he was referring to them having the mentality of a small team in their approach to the game, it has not been forgiven or forgotten in some quarters.

But Benitez, who won the Champions League and FA Cup with Liverpool in 2005 and 2006 before leaving in 2010, insists he was only doing what he believed was right for his club at the time.

“I have been in Madrid, Naples, Valencia, Tenerife, Extremadura and Liverpool,” he told evertontv.

“Every single club I was there, I was fighting for them. If you analyse things in the context, what you are expecting from your manager is to fight for your club, and I will do that.

“I am here, I will fight for my club, I will try to win every single game, and it doesn’t matter who the opponents are, or the rivals. It is something you have to do, it is your nature, that you have to try to do your best.

“And why a lot of fans in a lot of these cities love me is because I was giving everything for them.

“If you analyse this in the context, then it is very clear I will do the same for Everton.”

Such has been Moshiri’s desire to get the right man after the departure of Carlo Ancelotti four weeks ago he has ignored the loud opposition, which has seen offensive messages hung outside Goodison Park and a ‘We know where you live. Don’t sign’ banner hung over a garden wall near Benitez’s home in Caldy on the Wirral.

Benitez is the fifth manager the Everton owner has appointed in five years after sacking the current Belgium boss Roberto Martinez in May 2016. However, he is only the second to cross Merseyside, following in the footsteps of William Edward Barclay, who made the move in the opposite direction in the 1890s to become Liverpool’s first manager after the Toffees left Anfield for their purpose-built home at Goodison Park and a new club was formed in their place.

Moshiri is confident he represents their best choice for getting the club into Champions League contention after seven seasons finishing outside the top six, with Ancelotti managing only 12th and 10th in one-and-a-half disappointing campaigns.

“You can see the ambition is there. This club is growing. For me, it is about bringing the winning mentality, being competitive, so everything is in place on the pitch and off the pitch,” added Benitez.

“I love the passion of the people behind the club. I know the city, I know Scousers, I know what it means for every fan here to compete and to have the chance to win. To come to Everton is something that means a lot, for sure.

“I like to compete. I like to win and I have come to Everton because I liked the idea to be competitive again – and to have the chance to compete in every game, to compete against anyone.”

Benitez insists, despite his desire for full control and clashes with similar figures in the past, he is looking forward to working with director of football Marcel Brands as well as Ancelotti’s assistant manager Duncan Ferguson and goalkeeping coach Alan Kelly, who are to remain on the staff with further backroom appointments expected in the coming days.

“I worked in Spain for years with a director of football. Marcel is a professional. I am a professional,” he said.

“We will work together, we will keep talking, having meetings to talk about the club’s idea, what we have to do in the future, about players.

“The communication between us has to be fluent and we will be talking with each other all the time. I am really pleased with that (structure).

“I have already been in contact with him. I have the plan (for Everton’s summer transfer business).”

NUNO ESPIRITO SANTO BECOMES NEW TOTTENHAM MANAGER

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the appointment of Nuno Espirito Santo as their new head coach on a two-year deal.

The 47-year-old arrives at Spurs after a successful four-year spell at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

“When you have a squad with quality and talent, we want to make the fans proud and enjoy,” Nuno told Spurs’ official website.

“It’s an enormous pleasure and honour [to be here], there’s joy and I’m happy and looking forward to starting work. We don’t have any days to lose and we must start working immediately as pre-season starts in a few days.”

Nuno led Wolves to the Championship title in his first season in charge, before recording back-to-back seventh-placed finishes in the Premier League, the highest the club have achieved in the competition.

He oversaw Wolves’ first European campaign for 39 years, taking them to the quarter-finals of the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League, where they lost 1-0 to eventual winners Sevilla.

He has been named the Barclays Manager of the Month on three occasions.

Nuno’s first match in the dugout will be a home fixture against Manchester City on Sunday 15 August.

MANCHESTER UNITED AGREE DEAL TO SIGN JADON SANCHO FROM DORTMUND

Manchester United have agreed a deal in principle to sign England winger Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund for 85million euros (£72.9m), reports say

United have been heavily linked for several months with a big-money move for Sancho, who has been given the go-ahead by Dortmund to agree personal terms and complete a medical before joining Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

Sancho, a Manchester City academy product, left the north west to sign for Dortmund in August 2017 and has made 137 appearances in all competitions for the German club, scoring 50 goals.

It is understood the agreement between the clubs includes no add-ons for the 21-year-old attacker, currently on duty with England at Euro 2020, where he has been restricted to one substitute appearance so far.

Speculation was rife last summer that United would bring Sancho to Old Trafford but the club and Dortmund seemed to be far apart in the valuation of the player, reportedly then priced by the Bundesliga club at 120m euros (£106m).

However, a transfer has taken a major step forward and the pacey Sancho’s arrival would add a cutting edge to a side that lacked a spark in the attacking third in their Europa League final defeat against Villarreal in May.

United settled for second spot in the Premier League last season – their joint-best finish in the top-flight since 2012-13 – albeit they were 12 points adrift of champions City.

Sancho, capped 20 times by Gareth Southgate’s side, with three goals, would become the second most expensive Englishman if he completes his switch to United, who signed Harry Maguire two years ago from Leicester for £80m.

RAFAEL BENITEZ AGREES THREE-YEAR DEAL TO JOIN EVERTON

Former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has agreed a three-year deal to join rivals Everton.

The Spaniard spent six years at Anfield between 2004 and 2010, winning the Champions League, the FA Cup and guiding the Reds to a second-place finish in the Premier League.

Everton have been searching for a replacement for Carlo Ancelotti since the Italian’s return to Real Madrid and after talks with Nuno Espirito Santo, the Toffees have turned to Benitez.

The Spaniard is keen to return to the Premier League after an 18-month stint in China but the club’s interest in him has been met by a widespread backlash from supporters.

Benitez once referred to Everton as a ‘small club’ after a Merseyside derby and supporters have not forgotten his comments.

Banners have been hung outside Goodison Park in protest of the club’s interest in Benitez but the Toffees’ owners appear untroubled and look set to announce Benitez’s arrival in the next 48 hours.

The former Newcastle United boss has maintained a house on Merseyside, such was his love of the area during his time in England.

ARTEM DOVBYK LATE STRIKE HELPS UKRAINE EDGE SWEDEN TO BOOK LAST EIGHT SPOT WITH ENGLAND

Substitute Artem Dovbyk scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner in extra-time as Ukraine booked their Euro 2020 quarter-final place against England with a 2-1 win over Sweden at Hampden Park.

Manchester City’s Oleksandr Zinchenko fired in an unstoppable shot in the 27th minute to give Ukraine the lead but two minutes from the interval, Emil Forsberg levelled with a deflected strike from 25 yards – his fourth goal of the competition.

A compelling contest continued after the break with Forsberg twice hitting woodwork but with no more goals, it went to 30 additional minutes where Italian referee Daniel Orsata, with the help of VAR, sent off Sweden’s Marcus Danielson in the 99th minute for a high tackle on Ukraine substitute Artem Besedin.

The 10-men Swedes looked as though they would hold out for penalties but as the match edged into three minutes of added time, Dovbyk headed in a cross from Zinchenko from close range.

Now, after a night of exertion and drama in Glasgow, Ukraine will take on Gareth Southgate’s side, who beat Germany 2-0 earlier in the day, in Rome on Saturday night.

Sweden made the early running but in the 10th minute their goalkeeper Robin Olsen had to produce a fine save from Roman Yaremchuk’s well-struck drive after captain Andriy Yarmolenko had set him up inside the box.

Back came the Swedes and Alexander Isak finished a fine move by curling a drive from inside the box just past the far post.

Ukraine, however, took advantage of the next opportunity they created.

Yarmolenko flicked a pass to Zinchenko from the other side of the box and a powerful left-footed strike from the talented 24-year-old went straight through Olsen.

The stunned Swedes almost responded immediately with captain Sebastian Larsson’s long-range free-kick almost wrong-footing Ukraine keeper Georgiy Bushchan, who parried for a corner which he collected with ease.

However, Bushchan had little chance when Forsberg took a pass from Isak and drove in from 25 yards, the ball taking a nick off Illya Zabarnyi before flashing past the keeper and settling in the net.

Both sides went for it again after the break and Larsson came close with a drive from distance before Ukraine’s Serhiy Sydorchuk and then Forsberg hit the outside of the post with efforts at either end.

Just on the hour mark, Isak failed to connect properly with a long ball over the top and missed the target with only the keeper to beat, albeit he may have been offside.

Bushchan saved from Dejan Kulusevski’s curling shot from 16 yards and at the other end Olsen gathered a shot from Yarmolenko, also from inside the penalty area, before the influential Forsberg crashed a drive from the edge of the box against the bar.

Kulusevski had a chance in the final minute when he raced clear of the Ukraine defence but his shot was brilliantly blocked by back-tracking defender Oleksandr Karavaev.

Then came extra-time and the dismissal of Danielson, after he was initially shown a yellow card, for his challenge on substitute Besedin which required him to be replaced by Viktor Tsygankov.

Dovbyk, on for Yarmolenko at half-time in extra-time, scooped a chance over the bar after 112 minutes – he could have been offside – but he made up for it and then some when he stooped to head in a dramatic winner.

KANE, STERLING ON TARGET AS ENGLAND ELIMINATE GERMANY FROM EURO 2020

England beat Germany 2-0 at Wembley on Tuesday to reach the Euro 2020 quarterfinals thanks to second-half goals from Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane.

Both sides came into this match with question marks over them after unconvincing group stage performances with England scoring just twice despite topping the group while Germany needed a late goal against Hungary to seal their progress.

It was a game of few chances, though Jordan Pickford made an impressive save to deny Kai Havertz just after the interval, while Germany defender Mats Hummels produced an impressive goal line tackle to deny Kane just before half-time.

After a quiet first half, Luke Shaw grew into the game and provided an assist for both of the England’s opener, while Jack Grealish once again started on the bench, but was introduced on 69 minutes in place in place of Bukayo Saka and also set up a goal.

The breakthrough came on 75 minutes as Shaw played a ball across goal for Sterling to tap home from close range following good work from Grealish.

The Manchester City forward had also scored England’s winners in their 1-0 Group D victories over Croatia and Czech Republic.

Thomas Muller then had a glorious chance to equalise for Germany after Sterling had given the ball away, but somehow put his effort wide when he was clean through.

Shaw and Grealish combined again for the second goal with Aston Villa man providing the assist on this occasion.

Kane, who appeared to pick up an injury midway through the second half but carried on playing, sealed the victory with his first goal of the tournament on 86 minutes as he finished off a Grealish cross with a header from close range.

“We knew we needed a big performance against a difficult side, and we did that today,” Sterling said after the match. “Doing it for your country is always special.

“For half a second I thought let it [Sterling’s goal] not be offside, but I’m so happy it went in. We knew the intensity we could play at, not a lot of teams can deal with it.

“We kept going, [Declan] Rice and [Kalvin] Phillips, ate up ground and were animals in there. All-round, great team performance. We take it game by game, we go away, recover and get focused onto the next one.”

This was only England’s second-ever knockout win at a European Championship and they will face Sweden or Ukraine in the quarterfinals.

A clean sheet ensure England are the only remaining side in the Euros yet to have conceded a goal.

MESSI MOVES INTO TOP 10 OF INTERNATIONAL GOAL SCORERS AFTER ARGENTINA THRASH BOLIVIA

Lionel Messi scored twice in Argentina’s Copa America win over Bolivia to move into the top 10 men’s international goalscorers.

The 34-year-old’s achievement follows his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo matching Ali Daei’s all-time record last week, scoring five in Portugal’s Euro 2020 campaign.

Messi’s historic goal came in trademark fashion, a delicious 20-yard left-footed lob from Sergio Aguero’s lofted through-ball.

He had earlier netted a penalty, meaning his second goal of the game was his 75th in international football, moving him into a four-way tie for ninth place on the list – alongside Hungary great Sandor Kocsis, Japan’s Kunishige Kamamoto and Bashar Abdullah of Kuwait.

Messi has played more games than any of that trio – indeed, the goal was his second statistical achievement of the evening as he also became Argentina’s most-capped player with 148 appearances.

He has a long way to go to catch Ronaldo, who has 109 goals and counting to tie the record set by former Iran striker Daei.

The pair are 20 clear of ex-Malaysia striker Mohamed Mokhtar Dahari, with Ferenc Puskas – a long-time colleague of Kocsis in the ‘Magical Magyars’ team of the 1950s – fourth on 84 goals.

Godfrey Chitalu scored 79 for Zambia and Hussain Saeed Mohammed 78 for Iraq, leaving the pair just ahead of Brazil great Pele.

Current United Arab Emirates striker Ali Mabhkout has 76, edging him ahead of Kocsis, Kamamoto, Abdullah and Messi.
