HARRY KANE NOT IN TOTTENHAM SQUAD FOR OPENING GAME AGAINST MANCHESTER CITY

Harry Kane was not involved in Tottenham’s Premier League opener against Manchester City.

The England captain, who wants to join City this summer, only had two training sessions with the first team following his late return from holiday.

And it was decided he was not fit enough to even take a place on the bench and did not travel to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tanguy Ndombele was also left out for Spurs, who named an unchanged side from the one that started the final friendly against Arsenal last week.

Jack Grealish made his full debut for City following his £100million move from Aston Villa, while Kevin De Bruyne was named on the bench.

WESTHAM COME BACK TWICE TO BEAT NEWCASTLE 4-2 AT ST JAMES’S PARK

West Ham twice came from a goal down to start their Premier League campaign with a 4-2 victory against Newcastle in front of a bumper 50,673 attendance at St James’ Park.

Callum Wilson and Jacob Murphy struck either side of Aaron Cresswell’s 18th-minute leveller to put the hosts 2-1 ahead at the interval, after which three Hammers goals in 14 second-half minutes settled the contest.

Said Benrahma dragged the away side level again before Tomas Soucek put West Ham ahead for the first time, reacting quickly after Michail Antonio had seen his penalty saved by Freddie Woodman on his Premier League debut.

Antonio struck beyond the young goalkeeper soon afterwards as West Ham avenged a pair of defeats by Newcastle last season, with boos from the home support at the final whistle underlining the task facing Steve Bruce.

It has been a frustrating summer for the Magpies head coach and while he added to his squad with the acquisition of Joe Willock, unveiled to a deafening reception before kick-off, he was unable to call upon the midfielder, who was not registered in time for this fixture.

David Moyes, who guided West Ham to a surprise sixth-place finish last term and Europa League football, has also endured what he termed a “difficult” window although they were well worth their three points on Sunday.

Miguel Almiron was alert at the near post to block Soucek’s header in a frenzied start, where Newcastle took the lead in the fifth minute through their new number nine’s header, continuing his fine run against the Hammers.

Allan Saint-Maximin was the architect, twisting and turning with abandon on the right to confound Declan Rice before an inch-perfect cross allowed Wilson to bag his ninth goal in 11 career top-flight games versus West Ham.

Moyes’ side rallied and deservedly equalised, albeit in fortuitous circumstances as Cresswell’s teasing low ball drifted beyond the outstretched leg of Soucek before Jarrod Bowen tapped in after the ball had crossed the line. An offside flag was raised against Bowen but the goal stood after consulting the video assistant referee

Bowen had an excellent opportunity after ghosting past several Newcastle defenders only to be denied by Woodman, whose godfather and England boss Gareth Southgate was watching on.

Wilson’s audacious backheel was kept out by Lukasz Fabianski while Almiron’s shot deflected on to the top of the crossbar.

But Newcastle retook the lead five minutes before the end of an entertaining first half as Murphy stooped to head home after Matt Ritchie’s cross from the by-line had just evaded the leaping Wilson.

West Ham hit back again eight minutes after half-time, with Benrahma getting in-between two defenders to head in at the back post following a cross from Antonio, who did well on the left after initially miscontrolling.

Antonio then saw a bullet header cannon off the bar and ricochet into Murphy, who scythed down Pablo Fornals in the area in an attempt to claim the loose ball. Referee Martin Atkinson pointed to the spot and while Woodman guessed right to save Antonio’s effort low to his left, Soucek was first to the rebound and bundled in after 63 minutes.

It took only another three minutes for West Ham to seize complete control as Antonio finally got on the scoresheet on the counter, getting the ball on to his right foot and drilling low into the corner beyond a helpless Woodman.

Newcastle huffed and puffed thereafter, with substitute Ryan Fraser seeing a shot just miss the target, but the Tynesiders found stubborn resistance from West Ham and a substantial amount of jeers greeted the final whistle.

ITALIAN CHAMPIONS INTER MILAN SIGN EDIN DZEKO AND DENZEL DUMFRIES

Italian champions Inter Milan on Saturday signed 35-year-old striker Edin Dzeko from Serie A rivals Roma, just a day after selling Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea for a reported fee of £97 million ($135 million).

In a quickfire double swoop, Inter also announced they had signed Dutch defender Denzel Dumfries from PSV Eindhoven.

“FC Internazionale Milano is pleased to announce the signing of Edin Dzeko. The forward has joined the club from Roma on a permanent transfer, having signed a two-year contract that runs until 30 June 2023,” said an Inter statement.

Former PSV skipper Dumfries, 25, has penned a contract with Inter running through to June 2025.

Dzeko has enjoyed a successful career since leaving his native Bosnia.

In 2009, he helped fire Wolfsburg to their first and only Bundesliga title, finishing the campaign as top scorer on 26 goals.

At Manchester City, he scored one of the goals in the final day defeat of QPR which delivered a first English title 44 years.

With Roma, he grabbed 119 goals in 260 games.

Dzeko is also Bosnia’s all-time top scorer, with 59 goals in 114 appearances, helping his country qualify for their first major tournament, the 2014 World Cup.

Dumfries starred as the Netherlands reached the last 16 at Euro 2020 this summer where they were knocked out by the Czech Republic.

He has 23 caps and two goals, both of which came at the delayed tournament this summer.

TAMMY ABRAHAM FLIES TO ROME TO COMPLETE £34M MOVE FROM CHELSEA TO ROMA

Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham is flying to Rome today to complete his transfer to Jose Mourinho’s Roma, according to reports.

Abraham has fallen out of favour under Blues boss Thomas Tuchel and has sought a fresh start, agreeing to join the Serie A side in a £34million deal.

Tuchel used the England forward just seven times after replacing Frank Lampard in January.

Timo Werner, Olivier Giroud and even Kai Havertz have often been preferred ahead of Abraham as the focal point of Chelsea’s attack.

Abraham scored 12 times last term but 11 of those came in the first half of the season under Lampard.

The 23-year-old’s decision to depart might have been prompted after Tuchel left him out of the matchday squads for both the FA Cup and Champions League finals last season.

KARIM BENZEMA STARS AS REAL MADRID BEATS ALAVES

A double from striker Karim Benzema and goals from Nacho and Vinicius Jr. secured Real Madrid’s first three points of the season after a 4-1 victory against Deportivo Alaves in match day 1 of the Spanish La Liga at the Estadio Mendizorroza.

The game kicked off at a blistering pace and the first dangerous moment fell to the home side after six minutes but Rioja’s effort from the edge of the box was safely dealt with by Courtois. Real Madrid responded 11 minutes later, but Hazard’s whipped effort from outside the area failed to find the target.

About halfway through the opening 45 minutes, Carlo Ancelotti’s men began to really take charge of the encounter, with Benzema looking to make their superiority count in the 32nd minute. He brought down Militão’s long pass superbly and unleashed a fierce effort from the edge of the box which flew just wide.

The second half was a different story altogether, with Real Madrid taking the lead almost immediately.

Lucas Vázquez pulled the ball back on 48’ and Hazard’s sublime back-heeled pass found Benzema, whose first-time volleyed finish from on the penalty spot was equally as impressive.

Eight minutes later, Madrid doubled its lead when Modrić crossed with his left and the sliding Nacho turned the ball in with half-an-hour left to play.

Moments later, Madrid extended its lead when Valverde driving run found Benzema, whose initial effort was blocked by the keeper but the Frenchman fired the rebound into the net.

Alavés refused to be defeated and in the 65th minutes, they reduced the deficit when Joselu converted a penalty after Courtois had brought down Guidetti.

Madrid finished the game in style when Vinicius Jr. produced a diving header from a cross by Alaba on his official Madrid debut to make it 4-1.

Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid hung on to pick up their first three points of the new La Liga campaign. The Italian coach got his second stint in charge of Real Madrid off to the perfect start thanks to a dominant second half performance.

Karim Benzema picked up where he left off at the end of last season, scoring twice in addition to goals from Nacho and Vinicius.

Next up, Real madrid will play Levante at the Ciudad de Valencia stadium on Sunday

HARRY KANE TO STAY AT TOTTENHAM FOR ONE MORE SEASON

Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy is reportedly ready to reject Manchester City’s interest in Harry Kane to keep the England captain in North London for one more season.

Man City are keen to sign the 28-year-old during this summer’s transfer window, while Kane is thought to have made it clear that he wants to join the Premier League champions.

However, according to The Times, the forward is set to spend one more year at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Levy determined to keep hold of him.

The report claims that Spurs feel Man City have left it too late in the transfer window, as Nuno Espirito Santo’s side would struggle to sign a replacement at this stage.

Kane is expected to be in the squad for Sunday’s Premier League clash with Pep Guardiola’s side but could be named on the bench, having only just returned to the club following a holiday.

The striker, who scored four times in seven appearances for his country at Euro 2020, still has three years left to run on his contract in the English capital.

DIEGO COSTA COMPLETES MOVE TO BRAZILIAN SIDE ATLETICO MINIERO ON ONE YEAR DEAL

Diego Costa has completed his free move to Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro, with the former Chelsea striker finally landing a new club nine months on from his abrupt Atletico Madrid exit.

Costa, 32, has been a free agent since Atletico Madrid terminated his contract six months before its expiration date last December, with the Spaniards citing ‘personal reasons’ for the move.

Following the termination of his contract, Costa was allowed to join any side as a free agent and was linked with several clubs, including Arsenal and Juventus.

Benfica tabled an offer of a two-year deal worth £5m earlier this year but an agreement was never reached.

Now, the Spanish striker has completed his switch to Belo Horizonte, with Goal reporting that he has signed a one-year deal worth £40,000-per-week to play for the Brazilian top flight leaders.

‘From the world to Belo Horizonte: Diego Costa is now from Clube Atlético Mineiro,’ the club posted to their 2.2million followers on Sunday.

Costa was born and raised in Brazil. He played two friendlies for the country in March 2013 but declared he wanted to play international football for Spain later that year, having been granted Spanish nationality.

During his three-year stint at Stamford Bridge he won two Premier League titles and scored 59 goals in 120 games.

He returned to Atletico Madrid in 2017 after falling out with former Blues boss Antonio Conte, who told him via text that he was no longer part of his plans.

Conte wrote: ‘Hi Diego, I hope you are well. Thanks for the season we spent together. Good luck for the next year but you are not in my plan.’

Costa refused to return to training, accusing the club of treating him like a ‘criminal’ and claimed he was waiting in Brazil to be set free.

Costa will be available to Atletico Mineiro as soon as he is registered with the CBF and the top-flight Brazilian side will be hoping his sabbatical has put him in firing form. The lead the top flight by five points.

PEP GUARDIOLA SCARED OF ANOTHER MANCITY SLOW START TO THE SEASON

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola admits he fears another slow start this season but insists there will be no complaining or crying.

City dropped points in five of their opening eight Premier League games last year after a late finish to the previous pandemic-hit campaign denied them any significant break or pre-season preparation.

Things have been slightly better this summer but still well short of ideal with a number of international players having only resumed training a matter of days before Sunday’s league opener at Tottenham.

City turned the situation around spectacularly last year as they embarked on a 28-game unbeaten run from late November to take command of the title race and ultimately win it at a canter.

Guardiola expects the same mental fortitude may be needed again.

The Spaniard said: “Before, it was four or five weeks for preparation in pre-season, now (Thursday) is the first day we were all together. It is completely different.

“It is similar to last season when we played against Wolves without any friendly games having been played. People asked me how the team was and I didn’t know! I hadn’t seen them.

“That is why the mentality, and being strong in the head will be important. We know we are still a way from our best condition.

“We couldn’t have a pre-season for 75 or 80 per cent of the players but the most important thing we did last season was adjust, adapt and not complain.

“Day by day, week by week, game by game, we rejoined the players to the team dynamic and put them in the best condition. That’s why we had success last season because we did not cry in the beginning.

“We looked at what we could do to improve the team and when we arrived in some moment we started to win and win and win, and during four months we were unbeatable. That is why we won the Premier League and we arrived in the last stage of all the competitions.

“I think now we are not ready but we will see.”

Guardiola has already defended the club’s spending after their British record £100million signing of Jack Grealish last week prompted questions from some quarters over how they could still comply with Financial Fair Play regulations

With the club continuing to be linked another potential big-money signing in Harry Kane, the City boss felt the need to do so again, particularly after some remarks from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on Friday. The German said he could not understand the seemingly limitless spending power of some clubs.

Guardiola said: “We spend because we can do it. We don’t spend when we cannot do it. We invest what we can invest.

“We could spend £100million on Jack Grealish because we sold (players) for £60million. In the end we spent £40million. That is the reality the club said to me.

“We have limits for Financial Fair Play. If they are not agreeing they can go to the court, make a statement and we will defend (ourselves).”

RAFAEL BENITEZ VOWS TO FIGHT FOR EVERY POINT AFTER SOUTHAMPTON VICTORY

Everton manager Rafael Benitez insists he will do a “proper” job at the club and does not have to win over doubting fans after a 3-1 victory over Southampton got his controversial reign up and running in style.

The former Liverpool boss has faced opposition from a section of the support because of his association with the red half of the city and his “small club” comments about the Toffees from a Merseyside derby in 2007.

However, after goals from Olympic gold medallist Richarlison, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Dominic Calvert-Lewin turned things around following Adam Armstrong’s maiden Premier League goal for his new club, Benitez credited the players and a full Goodison Park with the victory.

“It is is nothing to do with me, it is more about the players and the fans,” he said.

“After so many months without fans the players appreciate the support of the fans and the fans appreciate the commitment of the players.

“They (fans) know the manager I am, I like to fight and compete: I did it today and I will do it all my time here. I am someone who likes to do their job properly and likes to win.

“I was nervous when I was coming here with other teams but not with my team. I am delighted to be here and see the reaction of the fans.

“It was an opportunity to show what we can do, what I can do, but especially what the players can do on the pitch with the fans behind them.

“We have to be competitive and the reaction we had after conceding a goal is something I have to be pleased about as manager.”

Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl was delighted to see his new £15million acquisition from Blackburn get off the mark immediately as he seeks to fill the boots of Danny Ings, who joined Aston Villa in the summer.

“I think it was a very good first game for him, he showed immediately he is good in the game, he is quick and can go in behind,” he said.

“I think we have a new striker who can score goals and this is good.”

Hasenhuttl also felt his side’s performance deserved more than it got having taken a 22nd-minute lead.

“It is very disappointing. We had a good start, a good goal and a lot of things we were working on were quite good,” he added.

“I haven’t seen a lot of chances for them in 45 minutes and then we concede a goal just after half-time. How we conceded the goal was too easy.

“It is a pity the guys don’t get anything from this game because I think the performance shows more than the score.”

GERARD PIQUE TAKES PAY CUT TO EASE PLAYER REGISTRATIONS AT BARCELONA

Barcelona have been able to register summer signings Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia — as well as forward Rey Manaj — ahead of the new LaLiga season thanks to Gerard Pique accepting a “substantial” pay cut, the club announced on Saturday.

LaLiga’s strict spending limits, based on an analysis of a club’s income and outgoings, had left Barca struggling to have the players available for their first game of the new campaign, even after the departure of Lionel Messi.

“FC Barcelona is able to register Memphis, Eric Garcia and Rey Manaj to play in the Spanish Liga de Futbol Profesional,” the club said in a statement. “This has been made possible thanks to an agreement with Gerard Pique whereby the Barça second captain’s salary has been substantially reduced.”

It added: “The club is also continuing to work with two of the other captains, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, to adapt their salaries to the club’s current situation. It must be noted that both players are totally and utterly willing to cooperate.”

The move means coach Ronald Koeman will have a full squad to choose from as Barca host Real Sociedad on Sunday.

Barcelona’s spending cap — the total sum it is allowed to spend on playing and coaching staff — has fallen from over €600 million in the 2019-20 season to an expected €200m now, due to financial problems exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic.

That made it impossible for the club to register an agreed new five-year contract with Messi, whose previous deal had expired, leading the forward to join Paris Saint-Germain this week.

It also meant that while Barca had announced the signings of Memphis and Garcia in June, the pair had not been officially registered with LaLiga until now.

In its statement on Saturday, the club also cited the work done in terms of outgoing player sales and loans to ensure the inclusion of the new arrivals.

“Jean-Clair Todibo was sold for €8 million to Nice, Junior Firpo went to Leeds United for €15m, [Francisco] Trincao was loaned to Wolverhampton Wanderers for €6m, Carles Alena was traded to Getafe for €5m and Konrad De La Fuente left for Marseille in exchange for €3.5m,” it said.

“The latter two operations were at 50% because they included the right to repurchase. In addition, Matheus Fernandes’ contract was terminated.”
