FIRE BREAKS OUT AT ANDORRA STADIUM AHEAD OF ENGLAND’S WORLD CUP QUALIFIER

A fire broke out at Andorra’s national stadium on ahead of Saturday’s World Cup qualifier against England.

The Three Lions are in the Pyrenees ahead of Saturday evening’s Group I clash against the side ranked 156th in the world.

The visitors trained at the Estadi Nacional on Friday lunchtime, before manager Gareth Southgate and stand-in skipper Kieran Trippier faced the media.

Shortly after they left the 3,300-capacity stadium a spectacular fire broke out on the TV gantry, with black smoke filling the air as flames ripped through the structure.

One onlooker told the PA news agency that welders were working there before the blaze.

Stadium staff tried to get the fire under control with the pitch sprinklers before the fire brigade arrived. Police were also in attendance, along with UEFA and Andorran Football Federation staff.

The Football Association is trying to ascertain if there is any impact on Saturday evening’s qualifier in Andorra la Valle.

TYSON FURY ARRIVES IN LAS VEGAS WITH A MESSAGE FOR DEONTAY WILDER

Tyson Fury has left Deontay Wilder in no doubt of his intentions upon his arrival in Las Vegas.

World heavyweight champion Fury is preparing for this weekend’s trilogy showdown with his American rival, having knocked him out in February 2020 after their first contest ended in a draw.

Wilder is banking on a new and improved style to get the better of Fury at the third time of asking.

But Fury shrugged: “I think you could go to college and get a Masters degree in nearly two years, so for a boxer to change his style is very easy to do.

“But no matter what Deontay Wilder does I’m still going to knock him the f*** out. In quick time, quick fashion.”

Wilder has consistently refused to acknowledge Fury as the WBC champion following his defeat via technical knockout in the seventh round, and merely insists their business is not over.

But Fury added: “It just shows you that I’m living in Wilder’s mind, rent free. The whole time, two years.

“Every time he looks in the mirror he sees Tyson Fury. Every time he goes to bed, before he closes his eyes, he sees the Gypsy King.

“Every time he wakes up he thinks of Tyson Fury. Even when he goes to bed with his missus, he’s thinking of Tyson Fury.”

ASISAT OSHOALA INSPIRES BARCELONA PAST FORMER CLUB ARSENAL IN UCL OPENER

Arsenal were put to the sword as an outstanding Barcelona side romped to a 4-1 win in their Women’s Champions League Group C opener.

Last season’s champions were in imperious form, with Mariona Caldentey, Alexia Putellas, Asisat Oshoala and Lieke Martens scoring the goals.

Frida Maanum grabbed a consolation for the Gunners, but only the performance of goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger stopped it from being a really embarrassing evening as she made a host of saves, including from Putellas’ stoppage-time penalty.

The keeper had to face 37 shots as Barca showed why they are favourites to retain their title.

Zinsberger got a sense of the sort of night she was in for after just seven minutes as she had to produce a top save to deny Caldentey.

The Gunners were second best in every department and facing incessant Barca pressure.

They eventually succumbed in the 31st minute and Zinsberger will have thought she could have done better.

The Austrian got down to save Oshoala’s low shot, but she could only parry it into the path of Caldentey who coolly slotted home the rebound.

Arsenal could not cope with the pace of Oshoala and she created the second three minutes before the break as she raced down the right and pulled back for Putellas to tap in from close range.

Jonas Eidevall’s side were relieved for the refuge of the dressing room at half-time as the first 45 minutes ended with a 19-0 shot count in the home side’s favour.

Any hopes of a second-half comeback were quickly put to bed as Barcelona added a third. Oshoala deservedly got on the scoresheet with a cool finish in the 47th minute.

Arsenal enjoyed a rare spell of dominance and got a goal back in the 73rd minute as Maanum bundled home with her hip from close range, but it was only a consolation.

Martens, dangerous off the bench, made it four, slotting home after being sent clear and it should have been five but the excellent Zinsberger saved Putellas’ late spot-kick.

GERMANY UNVEILS LOGO FOR UEFA EURO 2024

Germany has unveiled the logo for soccer’s 2024 European Championship during a ceremony with a light show in the stadium that will hold the final.

Some guests and media were invited to Berlin’s Olympiastadion for the UEFA launch, though no fans were present on a damp evening in the German capital on Tuesday.

The logo features an outline of the Henri Delaunay Cup – the bulbous tournament trophy – set on a coloured oval outline that resembles the Olympiastadion’s roof.

It features colours from the flags of UEFA’s 55 member nations, set in 24 slices around the trophy to represent the 24 teams that will ultimately qualify for the tournament in Germany.
Organisers said the brand will promote a tournament where diversity is celebrated, and everyone should feel welcome. The tournament’s slogan “United by Football. Vereint im Herzen Europas” – or “United at the Heart of Europe” – is meant to convey a message of togetherness and inclusion.

Logos for each of the 10 host cities – Berlin, Cologne, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Leipzig, Munich and Stuttgart – were also presented with each featuring a famous local landmark. Berlin’s, for example, features the Brandenburg Gate.

“From now on, the tournament has a brand identity which reflects the ambition we have together with the host association and host cities,” UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said. The tournament is due to be played in June and July 2024 with the match schedule to be confirmed next year.

Germany hosted the World Cup in 2006, with the final held in the refurbished Olympiasstadion. The stadium was originally built for the 1936 Olympic Games hosted by Nazi Germany. West Germany also hosted the World Cup in 1974 and the European Championship in 1988.

GLAZER FAMILY PUT 9.5 MILLION MANCHESTER UNITED SHAREE UP FOR SALE

Manchester United’s owners have put 9.5 million shares in the club up for sale.

The club announced the stock, worth £137.12million, would be made available via the New York Stock Exchange.

A statement said the Premier League club “will not receive any proceeds from the sale of any… shares”.

The shares listed are in the names of directors Kevin Glazer and Edward Glazer and represent around eight per cent of the owning family’s combined ownership.

The announcement comes after another of the family, Avram Glazer, sold £70million of shares in March. United did not receive anything from that sale.

The latest development comes amid continuing fall-out following the failure of the European Super League project, in which the Glazers were heavily involved, earlier this year.

United and 11 other leading European clubs threatened to break away to form their own rival competition to the Champions League.

It quickly collapsed after being hit by a wave of fan, sporting and political opposition.

That then brought the turbulent relationship between United supporters and the Glazers, which has existed since the Americans took control in 2005, back to the fore.

In response the Glazers promised to engage more with supporters and said some shares would be made available to fans.

WIGAN NAME MATT PEET AS NEW HEAD COACH

Wigan have appointed assistant Matt Peet as their new head coach and brought Shaun Wane back to the club.

The club also sprung a surprise with the appointment of former Warrington player and assistant coach Lee Briers to their new-look backroom team.

Peet has replaced Australian Adrian Lam, whose three-year reign was brought to a halt at the end of the 2021 season and, at 37, becomes the youngest head coach in Super League.

His assistants will be Briers, who has ended a 24-year association with Warrington, and ex-Wigan skipper Sean O’Loughlin.

Wane will combine his role as England head coach with that of leadership and management director of the Warriors.

Wigan chairman Ian Lenagan told a news conference: “We have no reservations at appointing from within.

“The individual development and team performance of players and coaches across all Wigan’s squads is of paramount importance for the success of Wigan Warriors.

“Matt Peet is perfectly qualified in every respect to deliver in this role and our significant additional investment in Lee Briers and Shaun Wane is targeted to achieve the success and entertainment Wigan fans deserve and expect.”

Peet has spent more than a decade at his home-town club, working in a range of coaching positions with the academy, reserves and now first team.

He coached the England Academy for four years including tour of Australia in 2016.

At the end of 2018, Peet left his position as Warriors head of youth to join Sale Sharks as head of performance and returned to Wigan in May 2019 as assistant coach with the first team, tasked primarily with coaching defence.

FERGUSON SAYS RONALDO SHOULD HAVE STARTED AGAINST EVERTON

Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson said Cristiano Ronaldo should have started last weekend’s 1-1 home draw with Everton instead of being brought on as a second-half substitute by current boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Ronaldo came on just before the hour mark with United leading 1-0 but Everton grabbed an equaliser in the 65th minute and held on for the draw.

In a video posted on social media, Ferguson is heard telling mixed martial arts great Khabib Nurmagomedov that Everton were given a boost “when they saw Ronaldo wasn’t playing…”

When Nurmagomedov reminded Ferguson that Ronaldo came on in the second-half, the Scot added: “Yeah I know … but you should always start with your best players.”

Ronaldo has said Ferguson, who first signed him as an 18-year-old from Sporting Lisbon in 2003, played a big role in the player coming back to Old Trafford.

United, who have 14 points from seven league games, will take on Leicester City on October 16th in the next round of matches following the international break.

JAMES WARD-PROWSE REPLACES INJURED KALVIN PHILLIPS IN ENGLAND SQUAD FOR WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS

James Ward-Prowse has replaced Kalvin Phillips in the England squad for this month’s World Cup Qualifiers after the Leeds midfielder withdrew through injury.

Phillips was assessed by medical staff after Leeds’ win over Watford at the weekend and has been deemed unfit.

Ward-Prowse – who scored and was sent-off in Southampton’s 3-1 loss at Chelsea on Saturday – is already at St George’s Park with his England team-mates.

Gareth Southgate’s side play Andorra away on Saturday before hosting Hungary at Wembley on Tuesday, October 12.

Phillips was a key player for England on their run to the Euro 2020 final this summer, playing in all seven matches and forming a solid partnership with Declan Rice in midfield.

Ward-Prowse was part of England’s provisional squad ahead of Euro 2020 – and played in both warm-up friendlies against Austria and Romania – but was cut from the roster ahead of the tournament.

He joins Tammy Abraham and Ben Chilwell in being late additions to the England squad.

Abraham and Chilwell were called up on Monday – four days after Southgate named his original squad – after Reece James withdrew with an ankle injury.

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel described James’ call up as a “misunderstanding” and joked he thought the defender was included in the England water polo team because he was training in the swimming pool as he recovered from injury.

England are four points clear of second-placed Albania in World Cup qualifying group I with four matches still to play.

They round off their qualifying campaign with games at home to Albania and away to San Marino next month.

LIVERPOOL GET ‘SUBSTANTIAL’ EVIDENCE FOLLOWING ALLEGED SPITTING INCIDENT

Liverpool have collected “substantial” evidence following an alleged spitting incident in Sunday’s match against Manchester City.

The visiting team made a complaint to Liverpool after alleging a fan spat at their backroom staff during the 2-2 Premier League draw at Anfield.

City boss Pep Guardiola said he was not aware of the incident at the time but was subsequently notified.

Liverpool have gathered a number of witness statements from people seated around the dugout area and are working with City staff to collect more evidence and unredacted video footage.

The club’s official sanctions process can result in a life ban, while there is also the potential for criminal charges.

A Reds spokesperson said: “Following a complaint of a serious alleged incident near the dugout area at Anfield during the second half of Sunday’s game against Manchester City, we are conducting a full investigation, working with all relevant parties including Manchester City, to gather evidence from individuals who witnessed the incident as well as analysing all available video footage.

“The evidence collected to date is substantial and, if requested to do so, will be handed to Merseyside Police given the potential for criminal charges.

“Anfield is our home and we will ensure it is a safe, enjoyable environment for everyone attending and will not allow unacceptable isolated behaviour to impact on our club’s values and principles.”

The club’s investigation is ongoing but Merseyside Police have charged four men – one local and three from County Antrim – in relation to possession and/or throwing of pyrotechnics outside the ground.

BURNLEY’S OWNER ALK OFFERS TO BUY ALL THE SHARES OWNED BY THE CLUB’S FANS

Burnley’s owner ALK has offered to buy the remaining shares owned by the club’s supporters.

The American investment group, headed by chairman Alan Pace, bought a controlling stake in the club last December.

Around six per cent of the club is still owned by individual shareholders and ALK insist there is no obligation for fans to sell.

Pace said: “We wanted to do the right thing by our fans and shareholders by putting together this offer. It would be a shame to not provide a considered offer to the group.

“It has been an incredibly busy period since we became custodians of Burnley FC, but we feel it is now worthwhile to proceed in this manner and to make an offer to purchase fan-owned shares should the holders wish to sell.

“I want to stress, however, that this offer is purely an option for the shareholders. They are not required to sell and should not feel obliged to do so. We welcome and are happy for them to continue their support for Burnley FC and remain part of the club shareholder group.”
