PARTEY, LACAZETTE ON TARGET AS ARSENAL BEAT LEICESTER TO CLIMB TO TOP FOUR

Goals in either half by Thomas Partey and Alexandre Lacazette helped Arsenal beat Leicester City 2-0 to reclaim fourth place.

The opening goal came in the 11th minute, Partey heading in Gabriel Martinelli’s corner at the near post.

Harvey Barnes twice tested Aaron Ramsdale before half-time, firstly smothering the winger’s shot before superbly tipping away his close-range header.

After Caglar Soyuncu was adjudged to have handled another Partey header following a VAR review, Lacazette powered in a penalty to double Arsenal’s lead on 59 minutes.

Substitute Emile Smith Rowe was denied by Kasper Schmeichel late on as Arsenal recorded a fifth straight league victory.

The Gunners now have 51 points, one more than fifth-placed Man Utd, who have played three matches more.

Leicester drop to 12th with 33 points.

Aubameyang and Lacazette missed Gunners’ opener after positive coronavirus tests

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette missed Arsenal‘s defeat at Brentford last Friday after testing positive for coronavirus, the Gunners have announced.

The north London outfit said Aubameyang could make a return to action in Sunday’s home clash with Chelsea, but fellow forward Lacazette will sit things out once again.

A statement on Arsenal’s official website on Thursday read: “Auba is now negative on Covid-19 testing, is well and following all protocols for return to play.

“He will return to training and be assessed prior to Sunday’s match. Alex is still recovering and will not be available.”

Winger Willian and goalkeeper Alex Runarsson have also tested positive.

The statement said Willian was adhering to protocols and that his health and fitness would be monitored and assessed ahead of the Chelsea game, while Runarsson was still recovering and would remain unavailable.

Arsenal have Thomas Partey (ankle), Gabriel Magalhaes (knee) and Eddie Nketiah (ankle) out of action as well.

Partey and Gabriel are aiming to be back in training later this month, and the target for Nketiah is early September.

Mikel Arteta’s men were beaten 2-0 by the Bees in their Premier League opener.

LACAZETTE STARS AS ARSENAL THRASH SHEFFIELD UTD

Alexandre Lacazette’s brace either side of a Gabriel Martinelli strike gave Arsenal a 3-0 victory over Sheffield United which lifts the Gunners into the top half of the Premier League table.

Arsenal had the better of the first-half chances, Martinelli finding the side-netting and later forcing goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale into a smart save.

And they took the lead when Bukayo Saka and Dani Ceballos exchanged passes before the latter produced an exquisite flick for Lacazette to round off a fine team move on 33 minutes.

Ramsdale then parried Nicolas Pepe’s shot into Martinelli’s path for a tap-in before Lacazette completed the scoring late on when played through on goal.

Arsenal’s first away Premier League victory over the Blades puts them on 45 points, above Leeds United and into ninth, with seven matches remaining.

Sheff Utd remain bottom with 14 points.
