OZIL MISSING IN ARSENAL’S EUROPA LEAGUE LINE UP.

Arsenal will not include Mesut Ozil in its Europa League lineup when the final squad is announced on Thursday, a report said. The veteran midfielder has not played a single minute since the games resumed after the lockdown.

Ozil is the highest-paid player on the club, earning an estimated $452,000 a week, BBC reported.

The Europa League only allows 17 non-locally trained players in the 25-man lineup. Goal reported that Mikel Arteta decided to leave out Ozil and defender Sokratis to make room in the squad.

Ozil last featured for the Gunners in the win against West Ham in March before the football season was suspended due to the global pandemic. Throughout the 31-year-old’s career, he’s served Arsenal in 254 games, netted 44 goals and tallied 77 assists. But while he’s been with the Gunners since 2013, he hasn’t been utilized much in 2020.

When asked why the German player hasn’t been seeing action on the field, Arteta replied by pointing out how their team is changing.

“The team is evolving, you can see the level they are achieving. This is where we are at the moment. We want to evolve more and play better and compete better,” Arteta told a news conference in September.

“You can see that the players we are changing, we are using, it’s very difficult every week not just for Mesut but for some other players as well to make the squad. Every week we try to pick the right players,” he continued.

The Arsenal manager added that he wants to give other players more time and experience as well.

“It’s difficult for others as well that aren’t involved in the Premier League and didn’t play tonight either. We have a squad of 26, 27 players at the moment and we can’t give playing time to all of them,” the 38-year-old coach shared.

“I understand and I respect your questions but I have to try to do my job as fair as possible. I try to select the players that are, in my opinion, in better condition,” Arteta concluded.

Arsenal’s Europa League campaign will start on Oct. 22 when the club faces Rapid Wien in Austria.

Midfielder Thomas Partey has joined Arsenal on a long-term contract from Atletico Madrid.

PEPE, SAKA HELP MOVE ARSENAL TO FOURTH POSITION WITH WIN OVER THE BLADES

Quickfire second-half goals from Bukayo Saka and Nicolas Pepe earned Arsenal a 2-1 victory over Sheffield United at Emirates Stadium.

The best moment of a quiet first half came on 37 minutes, when Aaron Ramsdale spectacularly saved Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s long-range shot.

The introduction of Pepe as a 58th-minute substitute provided the spark that Arsenal needed.

He released Hector Bellerin down the right and the defender crossed for Saka, who celebrated his England call-up this week with a headed goal on 61 minutes.

Less than three minutes later Pepe scored himself with a superb solo run and finish to cap off a 19-pass move.

Sheff Utd were given hope when David McGoldrick curled in their first goal of the season with six minutes left, but Arsenal held on for a win that lifts them up to fourth on nine points.

The Blades remain without a point and are second from bottom.

Aubameyang extends Arsenal contract

Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has signed a new three-year deal with the club.

The 31-year-old striker joined the Gunners in January 2018 and won the Premier League Golden Boot in his first full season in 2018-19.

“Signing for this special club was never in doubt,” he said.

“I believe in Arsenal. We can achieve big things together. We have something exciting here and I believe the best is to come for Arsenal.”

Aubameyang’s contract was due to expire at the end of the 2020-21 season meaning he would have been free to talk to other clubs from January.

The Gabon striker scored in Arsenal’s victory at Fulham on Saturday, the first game of the new Premier League season.

He also scored two goals against Chelsea in the FA Cup final in July, securing the Gunners’ place in next season’s Europa League.

“It was important for Pierre-Emerick to stay with us,” said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.

“He’s a superb player with an incredible mentality. Being the player to have taken the least amount of time to reach 50 goals with this club tells you everything you need to know about him and his way of working.

“He’s an important leader for the team and a big part of what we’re building. He wants to be up there with the best players in the world and leave his mark. He can achieve that here.”

Since joining Arsenal, for a then club-record £56m, Aubameyang has scored 72 goals in 111 appearances in all competitions. In 86 Premier League appearances he has scored 55 goals and made 12 assists.

The 2015 African Footballer of the Year was made captain in November after midfielder Granit Xhaka was stripped of the role by Arteta’s predecessor Unai Emery.

This summer Arsenal have signed Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhaes for 26m euros (£23.14m) from Lille, brought in former Chelsea forward Willian on a free transfer and re-signed Dani Ceballos on loan from Real Madrid.

MIKEL ARTETA WANTS AJAX STAR, QUINCY PROMES AT THE EMIRATES.

Arsenal are weighing up a £25m bid for Ajax ace Quincy Promes, who impressed in the Eredivisie this season.

Promes scored 16 goals and added five assists in 28 games before the coronavirus lockdown ended the Dutch league ahead of schedule.

Liverpool have been linked to the winger in the past but now Arsenal are leading the race for his signature.

Mikel Arteta is keen to act fast to strengthen his squad in the wake of their FA Cup final win over Chelsea.

And according to sources, he is keen to bring Promes to North London to kickstart his summer transfer plans.

A source close to the player told reporters: “Quincy would go in a heartbeat.

“It would be a great move for him and Arsenal.”

He was signed to replace Barcelona-bound Frenkie de Jong which made him the club’s third most expensive player of all-time.

The winger also has 42 caps for Holland was grabbed the third goal against England in the semi-final of the Nations League as Gareth Southgate’s team were beaten 3-1 last summer.

Arteta looks certain to add former Chelsea star Willian to his squad on a free transfer in the coming days.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is thought to be close to agreeing a new contract with the captain and leading goalscorer for the past two seasons a crucial part of the Spaniard’s plans.

Arsenal are also looking to raise money by selling Ainsley Maitland-Niles in order to fund the club’s recruitment drive ahead of next season.

Arsenal win record-extending 14th FA Cup

Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang once again lit up Wembley as his brace ensured FA Cup final victory over 10-man Chelsea.

The striker equalised with a penalty he had won himself to cancel out Christian Pulisic’s early opener.

Chelsea then lost Cesar Azpilicueta and Pulisic to injury before Aubameyang brilliantly added his second to secure a 2-1 victory and then lifted a record 14th FA Cup for the Gunners.

Chelsea then had Mateo Kovacic sent off as they chased the game, the Croatia international picking up two bookings, both for fouls on Granit Xhaka with the second a controversial call from referee Anthony Taylor.

Aubameyang’s future at Arsenal remains in doubt as he has less than a year to run on his contract, but after downing Manchester City with two goals in the semi-final, he again showed his importance to Mikel Arteta’s side.

For Arteta, this was a first piece of silverware in a managerial career that only began in December and sees Arsenal qualify for the Europa League next season.

Aubameyang wasted the first chance of the final, heading wide when picked out in the box by Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

Chelsea had their own opening moments later, Xhaka robbed of the ball and Mason Mount’s curling effort forcing Emiliano Martinez into an early save.

But there was nothing the Arsenal goalkeeper could do from the next Chelsea attack as Pulisic struck.

Mount broke into the penalty area and squared to Olivier Giroud, the former Arsenal man flicking the ball into the path of Pulisic, who skipped past the challenge of Kieran Tierney to become the first United States international to score in an FA Cup final.

Nicolas Pepe thought he had curled in a marvellous equaliser but his celebrations were cut short as Aubameyang had strayed offside in the build-up.

However, just seconds later and Aubameyang was played in over the top, racing clear of Azpilicueta before being hauled back by the Chelsea skipper.

Taylor opted to only caution Azpilicueta but the penalty stood following a short VAR check and Aubameyang made no mistake from the spot.

Azpilicueta would last less than five minutes longer, forced off with an injury as he made way for Andreas Christensen.

Arsenal dominated the remainder of the first half without managing to test Willy Caballero in the Chelsea goal.

After the break, Pulisic broke forward looking to add his second of the afternoon but instead was soon going the same way as his captain, limping off with a hamstring injury after shooting wide.

Pedro entered the fray in his place as Chelsea started to wrestle back control of the contest.

That was until Aubameyang struck once again.

Hector Bellerin burst forward down the right and Christensen’s heavy challenge saw the ball break to Pepe, his pass picked up by Aubameyang who turned on to his preferred left foot to lift the ball over Caballero.

Chelsea’s task was made all the more difficult as Mateo Kovacic was sent off, shown his second yellow card for a foul on Granit Xhaka just six minutes after they had lost their lead.

While Arteta could toast his first trophy, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard ultimately saw his side come up short.

He threw on Ross Barkley, Tammy Abraham and Callum Hudson-Odoi despite being a man light but there was to be no comeback.

Chelsea had beaten Arsenal 4-1 in the Europa League final last season but this would go the other way, due in no small part to the clinical Aubameyang, whose future Arteta will want sorted as soon as possible.

Villereal hire Emery

Former Arsenal manager Unai Emery has been appointed as manager of La Liga side Villarreal on the three-year deal.

The 48-year-old Spaniard succeeds Javi Calleja, who left the club despite a fifth-placed finish that secured a Europa League spot.

Emery has been out of work since being sacked by Premier League Arsenal in November after 18 months in charge.

He has managed Sevilla and Valencia in the Spanish top flight, as well as Paris St-Germain in France.

Emery took over from Arsene Wenger at Arsenal in May 2018 after winning three successive Europa Leagues with Seville and a Ligue 1 title with PSG.

But he was dismissed by the Gunners after their worst run without a victory for 27 years.

ARSENAL DEFEAT MAN CITY

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta outmanoeuvred his mentor Pep Guardiola as the Gunners reached the FA Cup final with victory at Wembley.

Arteta, who left his job as Manchester City assistant manager to succeed Unai Emery at Arsenal in December, now has a chance to mark his first season in charge with major silverware when they face Chelsea or Manchester United in the final on 1 August.

The match-winner was Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the world-class striker Arsenal are desperate to secure on a new long-term contract, as he ruthlessly exposed City’s defensive deficiencies.

Aubameyang had already shot straight at Ederson with one clear chance but there was no escape for City after 19 minutes when he showed great technique to steer home Nicolas Pepe’s cross with the outside of his foot at the far post.

City dominated possession after the break but squandered their opportunities and Aubameyang made them pay once more in the 71st minute when he raced away on the angle to slide a composed finish under the keeper.

Barcelona offer Coutinho to Arsenal & Newcastle

The Liga giants are eager to get the former Liverpool star off their books and may be willing to sanction a loan switch to a Premier League suitor

Barcelona have offered Philippe Coutinho to Arsenal and Newcastle in an ongoing bid to free up squad space and funds that will allow them to launch a raid on Inter for Lautaro Martinez, Goal has learned .

Barca snapped Coutinho up from Liverpool in the winter window of 2018 , but have seen little return on their investment.

A season-long stint at Bayern Munich has only served to raise further questions of the 28-year-old’s form and fitness .

Barcelona are now looking to put another deal in place, with the Liga giants aware that they cannot incorporate another sizeable salary into their plans for 2020-21.

There is acceptance on the part of the Blaugrana that they are going to struggle to find a European suitor willing to take on both Coutinho’s wage and a sizeable transfer fee.

With that in mind, they have started to seek out potential landing spots, and Arsenal and Newcastle have been sounded out, with both clubs having been heavily linked with the midfielder in the past.

No answer has been received from either club as yet, with the Gunners and Magpies continuing to mull over the terms of a deal and their respective standings for next season – on both sporting and financial fronts.

Efforts to bring in alternative options, such as Argentina international Lautaro , can only be made if money is saved and raised elsewhere.

Arsenal draw at Home

Jamie Vardy’s late equaliser gave Leicester City a vital point to keep their Champions League hopes on track and end Arsenal’s recent winning streak.

The Gunners looked on course for a fifth successive victory to maintain their own outside chance of a place in Europe’s elite competition next season after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang swept in his 20th league goal of the season in the first half.

Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel kept Arsenal at bay with a string of fine saves before the interval, twice denying Alexandre Lacazette as well as Bukayo Saka – and it proved to be a vital contribution.

Arsenal were reduced to 10 men with 15 minutes left when Eddie Nketiah was sent off four minutes after coming on as substitute for a high challenge on James Justin, and Leicester cashed in when Vardy slid home Demarai Gray’s cross in the 84th minute, the goal finally awarded after a lengthy VAR check for offside.

It was Vardy’s 22nd league strike of the season and restored his two-goal advantage over Aubameyang at the top of the Premier League scoring charts.

Leicester drop to fourth, four points ahead of Manchester United having played a game more, but this was an important point that left Arsenal frustrated in seventh.
