UCL: BENFICA CRUISE PAST BARCELONA TO PILE PRESSURE ON RONALD KOEMAN, BAYERN THRASH KYIV

Barcelona have made their worst start to a Champions League campaign ever after a chastening 3-0 defeat at Benfica.

The Portuguese side dealt a further blow to Ronald Koeman, with Barcelona slumping to their second successive defeat in the competition as they also finished the match with 10 men.

Darwin Nunez netted in the third minute and capped off his side’s scoring with a penalty in the 79th, with Rafa Silva striking in between. Eric Garcia was sent off late on.

The defeat means Barcelona are under pressure to avoid missing out on the knockout stage for the first time since the 2003-04 season when they did not feature in the competition at all.

Also in Barcelona’s group, Robert Lewandowski scored twice as Bayern Munich stormed to a 5-0 win over Dynamo Kyiv.

Lewandowski’s goals, including from the penalty spot, came inside the first half an hour, with Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sane and substitute Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting also adding their names to the scoresheet.

‘It is what is’: Koeman accepts Barca fate after Bayern defeat

A deflected goal from Thomas Mueller gave Bayern a deserved lead in the first half before Robert Lewandowski struck twice after the break to inflict another painful European defeat on Barca after thrashing the Catalans 8-2 in August last year.

Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman was in a resigned mood after his side were outclassed and beaten 3-0 by Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday, saying fans needed to be realistic about the team’s current plight.

A deflected goal from Thomas Mueller gave Bayern a deserved lead in the first half before Robert Lewandowski struck twice after the break to inflict another painful European defeat on Barca after thrashing the Catalans 8-2 in August last year.

The Dutch coach pointed to the team’s injury problems including the absences of forwards Ousmane Dembele, Ansu Fati, Martin Braithwaite and Sergio Aguero and revealed Jordi Alba had played despite being ill the night before the match.

“You have to be realistic in life. Our young players showed we have a future and we have a lot of players to come back from injuries. It is what it is,” Koeman told a news conference.

“We know we’re missing a lot of players in attack and we have to wait a few weeks to have more options and more speed going forward. I don’t want to look for excuses but everyone knows the problems we had with the players who were unavailable.”

Barca failed to have a single shot on target over the 90 minutes and while Bayern were able to bring on experienced internationals such as Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman from the bench, Koeman hauled on three teenagers in search of a response.

“It’s very tough to play against a team like Bayern when you don’t have much speed going forward. We have to accept it and keep working. And we have to recognise the team we were up against,” he added.

“To do damage against a team like Bayern you have to be at your very best and you have to admit it when the other team is better. But I’m a little tired of talking about the same thing, in a few weeks the team will be different because we’ll have more players available and we will be fitter.

“Bayern are one of the favourites to win the Champions League and soon enough we ran into problems. We were a little unlucky with their first goal but in the second half they proved they are a better team than us right now.”

UCL: LEWANDOWSKI BRACE HELP BAYERN THRASH SORRY BARCELONA

Two goals from Robert Lewandowski and one from Thomas Muller propelled Bayern Munich to a 3-0 win at Barcelona in their opening Champions League game on Tuesday in another brutal demonstration of the gulf in class between the two sides.

Muller gave Bayern the lead in the 34th minute with a strike from outside the area which deflected off Barca defender Eric Garcia to confound goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Lewandowski struck the German champions’ second in the 54th, tapping into the net from close range on the rebound after Jamal Musiala had hit the post as Bayern made a rampant start following the interval, hemming their hosts into their own half.

The Polish striker twisted the knife further into Barcelona by scoring again in the 85th, collecting the ball in the area after another shot had come back off the post and tormenting the defence before calmly beating Ter Stegen in the Group E clash.

The scoreline was not quite as damning for Barca as the 8-2 drubbing Bayern gave them in the quarterfinals two seasons ago but the performance was just as hopeless as they were routinely dispossessed and struggled to cope with the visitors’ intensity.

Barca made a promising start in their first Champions League game in front of supporters at the Camp Nou since December 2019, although while the crowd was limited to 40,000 due to coronavirus restrictions there were fewer fans in attendance owing to a lack of appetite for the post-Lionel Messi era.

But Bayern soon showed their superiority and it took a strong hand from Ter Stegen to prevent Leroy Sane giving the Germans the lead, while Gerard Pique had to slide across the ground to block a goal-bound strike from Musiala.

Barcelona’s only real attempt on goal in the first half came from a free kick, defender Ronald Araujo meeting Memphis Depay’s cross and heading just over the bar.

Bayern finally took the lead their play merited through Muller, who scored twice in the 8-2 hammering of Barca in Lisbon and has now netted seven times against the Catalans in Europe’s top competition.

Loud boos could be heard at halftime but things got more desperate for the hosts after the break and by the end of the game Barca fans were sarcastically applauding the team whenever they managed to recover the ball, resigned to their fate.

“We came to win this game and we knew that we had to show respect to Barcelona,” Lewandowski said. “When you play at the Camp Nou against them they are always dangerous. But we had this game under control and we showed we were here for the three points.”

Lewandowski extended his scoring streak in all club competitions to 18 matches. For Muller, it was his 49th goal in Champions League competition with seven of those against Barcelona. No other player has scored more goals in the competition against Barcelona than him.

“It’s a lot of fun playing here, the boys enjoyed it,” Muller said. “When you win 3-0 here, it’s a really important signal. We’re really pleased. We gave very little away at the back and going forward, we could have scored one or two more.”

Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman said the gulf in talent on the field was apparent and pointed out that his side was playing without injured stars like Sergio Aguero, Ousmane Dembele, and Ansu Fati.

“I can’t complain about the team’s attitude, but there’s a quality difference. One team that have played together for a long time [against] us, with a lot of young players who in two, three years will be better. It’s really difficult to accept, but we hope to improve things and to get people back from injuries.

There are players aged 19, 20. If you compare that with what Bayern have, it’s a huge difference. The difference will get smaller in time.”

With Camp Nou at 40% capacity, the fans took out their frustration on Sergi Roberto, who had a less than memorable performance playing out of position at right full-back and substituted off in the 60th minute.

“Bayern are really solid and we are what we are. It is what it is. At the end, we had a lot of kids on. We’re Barca and I don’t want to make excuses, though. We will see at the end of the season,” Barca captain Pique said after the match.

“It hurts me a lot personally because I know him as a person, he’s a great human being and loves this club more than anything. I would like to remind people he’s not a full-back, either, and he’s making a huge sacrifice by playing there. It hurts a lot,” Pique said of his teammate.

Koeman also came to the defense of Roberto, saying: “I never like fans whistling a player. All the players have tried to give everything.

“The only thing is Sergi was playing in a position, if all players available, he would not play that position. To play further forward on the wing, have to be good one on one, quick … he’s another type of player.”

BOATENG FOUND GUILTY OF BODILY HARM, FINED €1.8M

Lyon defender Jerome Boateng was found guilty of premeditated bodily harm on his former partner Sherin Senler, a spokesperson for a court in Munich said on Thursday.

He was fined €1.8 million.

The 2014 World Cup winner, who had appeared in the Munich court wearing a dark blue suit, was accused of injuring his ex-girlfriend in a fight during a vacation in 2018.

Boateng, 33, had denied wrongdoing and told Munich District Court that he did not hit and injure Senler in July 2018 when they were on vacation in the Turks and Caicos Islands. He was charged with allegations of dangerous bodily harm and verbal abuse against Senler, with whom he has two children.

According to the indictment, Boateng beat her, boxed her, bit her head, threw her on the ground and insulted her. DPA news agency reported the public prosecutors’ office also accuses Boateng of throwing a glass lantern and cooling bag at Senler.

The former Germany and Bayern Munich defender told the court his former partner had become aggressive and insulting during a dispute after a game of cards. He said she hit him and injured his lip, and that she fell when he tried to push her away. He disputed throwing a lantern at her, but said it fell when he threw a cushion at a table.

Boateng’s lawyer, Kai Walden, previously said his client was disputing the allegations.

Boateng appeared at the court on Thursday, the only scheduled day for the trial, which had been delayed because of coronavirus restrictions.

The defender signed with French team Lyon on a free this summer after Bayern declined to extend his contract.

Another record for Robert Lewandowski as Bayern wins

Robert Lewandowski has scored a hat trick and set a new Bayern Munich record for scoring in consecutive games after leading the team to a 5-0 rout of Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga.

Robert Lewandowski grabbed a hat trick and set a Bayern Munich record for scoring in consecutive games as he led the team to a 5-0 rout of Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

The 33-year-old Lewandowski’s latest goals ensured he has scored in every game for the last 16 matches across all competitions for Bayern, going back to a 3-3 draw with Arminia Bielefeld on Feb. 15.

Former West Germany great Gerd Muller, who died on Aug. 15 at age 75, had a 15-game scoring run for Bayern in 1969-70.

Lewandowski broke Muller’s old Bundesliga record by scoring 41 goals last season. He already has five goals from three games this season.

Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann dropped misfiring winger Leroy Sane to the substitutes’ bench and started with the 18-year-old Jamal Musiala in his place. Sane was whistled by Bayern fans for a poor performance against Cologne last weekend.

The defending champions didn’t need long to get off the mark against Hertha. Lewandowski allowed Alphonso Davies’ cross through for the better-placed Thomas Muller to open the scoring in the sixth minute with a low shot inside the far post. Serge Gnabry and Musiala were also involved in what was a fine team move.

The home fans had to wait half an hour for the next goal, headed in by Lewandowski from close range at the second attempt after his first attempt from Gnabry’s cross hit the crossbar. The Poland star out-jumped two Hertha defenders to reach the rebound.

Hertha captain Dedryck Boyata made a crucial clearance as the home team threatened to run riot before halftime.

But Bayern resumed after the break, when Musiala showed why he was given a starting spot by cutting inside and dispatching the ball inside the far post after Muller had won the ball from Deyovaisio Zeefuik.

Musiala – already a German international – got an ovation from Bayern fans when he went off for Sane in the 61st.

Sane made his case by cutting inside past two Hertha defenders, playing a one-two, and then setting up Lewandowski’s second goal in the 70th. The Poland star completed his hat trick in the 84th.

WIRTZ’S WALTZ

Florian Wirtz celebrated his Germany recall by leading Bayer Leverkusen to a 4-1 win at Augsburg, keeping the visitors’ good form under new coach Gerardo Seoane.

The 18-year-old Wirtz was called up by new Germany coach Hansi Flick on Friday for upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Lichtenstein, Armenia and Iceland.

Leverkusen, which routed Borussia Monchengladbach last weekend, got off to a great start when Augsburg’s Brazilian defender Iago chipped the ball over his own goalkeeper and into the net in the third minute.

Augsburg forward Florian Niederlechner added another own-goal in the 14th when he tried to stop Kerem Demirbay’s shot.

Niederlechner atoned by scoring in the 30th, profiting from a mix-up between Leverkusen defender Mitchel Bakker and goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky.

Leverkusen’s Moussa Diaby had a goal ruled out through VAR for a hand ball by Charles Aranguiz in the buildup.

Augsburg was pushing for an equalizer when Seoane reacted by bringing on Wirtz and Robert Andrich in the 65th. Wirtz made an immediate impact, setting up Patrik Schick in the 75th, then scoring himself in the 81st.

Freiburg held on for a 3-2 win in Stuttgart, which trailed 3-0 in the first half but couldn’t find any more goals in the second.

Cologne enjoyed a 2-1 win over promoted Bochum, Mainz beat promoted Greuther Fuerth 3-0 and Eintracht Frankfurt was held 1-1 at Arminia Bielefeld.

Bayern Munich rule out summer exit for Robert Lewandowski

Bayern Munich are allegedly not prepared to sell Robert Lewandowski during this summer’s transfer window.

The 32-year-old still has two years left to run on his contract at Allianz Arena, but it has been claimed that he is keen to leave Bayern in search of a new challenge.

A recent report claimed that Lewandowski wants to join ‘another top European club’ before the end of his career, which led to suggestions that the Poland international could be on the move in the near future

However, according to Goal, Bayern will not consider selling the experienced forward, who was linked with Chelsea earlier this summer, under any circumstances.

The report claims that Lewandowski is aware of the German club’s position and will not actively attempt to force a move away despite being keen on the idea of a new challenge.

The 122-time Poland international has scored 297 goals and registered 65 assists in 331 appearances for Bayern since making the move from Borussia Dortmund in July 2014.

The Bundesliga giants are expected to be in the race for Erling Braut Haaland next summer, when a release clause in the Dortmund forward’s contract will become active

BAYERN MUNICH AND GERMANY LEGEND GERD MULLER DIES AT 75

Gerd Muller, the striker who scored the winning goal for West Germany in the 1974 World Cup final, has died aged 75.

Considered one of the finest players of his generation, Muller also helped West Germany to European Championship glory in 1972 and won the European Cup three times with Bayern Munich.

Muller died on Sunday morning after a six-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

His former club Bayern revealed the news with a statement which read: “Today the world of FC Bayern stands still.

“The German record champions and his entire fan base mourn Gerd Muller, who died early Sunday morning at the age of 75.”

Affectionately known as ‘Der Bomber’, Muller scored 68 goals in 62 appearances for West Germany, including the winner against Holland at Munich’s Olympic Stadium in 1974.

During 15 years at Bayern, Muller hit a record 365 goals in 427 Bundesliga games and 66 goals in 74 European matches.

He also won the Ballon d’Or in 1970 among a host of other individual and collective awards and honours

Bayern president Herbert Hainer told the club website: “Today is a sad, black day for FC Bayern and all of its fans.

“Gerd Muller was the greatest striker there has ever been – and a fine person, a personality in world football. We are united in deep sorrow with his wife Uschi and his family.

“Without Gerd Muller, FC Bayern would not be the club we all love today. His name and the memory of him will live on forever.”

LEWANDOWSKI ON TARGET AS BAYERN MUNICH DRAW BUNDESLIGA SEASON OPENER AT BORRUSIA MONCHEGLADBACH

Robert Lewandowski equalised as defending champions Bayern Munich were held to a 1-1 draw at Borussia Moenchengladbach in a hard-fought opening game of the new Bundesliga season on Friday. “It wasn’t perfect football from us,” Lewandowski told broadcaster Sat1. “We made a lot of mistakes, but the first game is over, now we can look ahead.” Gladbach deservedly took the lead when French striker Alassane Plea fired past Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer with just ten minutes gone. Lewandowski levelled just before the break from a corner, but both sides wasted second-half chances to grab the winner.

Only superb saves from home goalkeeper Yann Sommer repeatedly denied Lewandowski and the Bayern attack.

At the other end, Gladbach substitute forward Marcus Thuram failed to connect with the goal at his mercy and later saw his appeals for a clear penalty waved away by the referee.

“There were fireworks from us in the first quarter of an hour,” Gladbach captain Lars Stindl told DAZN and hailed Sommer’s “world-class” performance.

Bayern’s new head coach Julian Nagelsmann is still waiting for his first victory after three defeats and a draw in pre-season friendlies.

The 34-year-old is under pressure to deliver a tenth straight Bundesliga title for Bayern in his first season.

“We have to live with the point, both sides had chances, it was a pretty crazy game for the fans to watch, not so easy for the coaches,” Nagelsmann told DAZN.

Borussia Park was a third full as Bundesliga clubs welcome back supporters on the opening weekend of the season.

Bayern were missing injured France defender Benjamin Pavard, whose place went to reserve left-back Josip Stanisic for only his second Bundesliga appearance.

Gladbach tore open the Bayern defence after just six minutes when Patrick Herrmann sprinted clear and squared to Lars Stindl, who could not get a shot away.

Bayern fell behind when Canadian left-back Alphonso Davies lost the ball on halfway.

The ball was moved to Stindl, who flicked his pass onto Plea, who was unmarked and fired past Neuer.

At the other end, only a stunning reflex save by Sommer denied Lewandowski from point-blank range.

However, the Bundesliga’s record goal-scorer for a single season struck just before half-time to make it 1-1 at the break.

When Joshua Kimmich fired in a corner, Lewandowski slipped his marker and fired past Sommer, picking up when he left off last season when he scored a Bundesliga record 41 goals in 2020/21.

Bayern had a golden period approaching the hour mark when only more superb Sommer saves denied Davies, then Lewandowski in quick succession.

Gladbach won 3-2 when the sides last met at Borussia Park in January and the hosts again put up a fight.

Neuer did superbly well with a diving save to deny Stindl after Gladbach midfielder Hannes Wolf broke down the wing and squared inside.

With just over ten minutes left, Thuram came within a whisker of restoring the hosts’ lead when he just failed to connect with the goal at his mercy.

Referee Marco Fritz then waved away Gladbach’s furious calls for a penalty when Thuram appeared to be brought down in the area by new Bayern signing Dayot Upamecano

New Gladbach head coach Adi Huetter received a yellow card on the sidelines for his impassioned protest while Kimmich fired wide in added time.

NETHERLANDS LEGEND, ARJEN ROBBEN RETIRES FOR THE SECOND TIME

Arjen Robben has retired from football for the second time at the age of 37.

The former Netherlands international initially hung up his boots in 2019 before reversing the decision to return to his first club Groningen last season.

Injuries and the coronavirus pandemic marred the winger’s second spell and he announced his decision on Thursday.

Robben won two Premier League titles, two League Cups and an FA Cup with Chelsea during a stellar career,

He also played at PSV Eindhoven, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, and won 96 caps for his country, scoring 37 goals.

He wrote on Twitter: “I have decided to end my active football career, it was a very difficult choice. I want to thank everyone for their heart-warming support!”

Signed by Claudio Ranieri before he was sacked by Chelsea in 2004, Robben played a key role as the Blues won back-to-back titles under Jose Mourinho in 2005 and 2006.

In 2007, he was sold to Real Madrid, but, despite winning La Liga in his first season, it was at Bayern Munich where he showed his best form.

Robben joined the German side in 2009 and helped them to a treble four years later by scoring in the Champions League final win over Borussia Dortmund at Wembley. He stayed in Bavaria until his first retirement.

Having played in the 2010 World Cup final, which the Dutch lost to Spain, Robben quit international football in 2017 when the national team failed to qualify for the 2018 tournament in Russia.

ROBERT LEWANDOWSKI BREAKS 49-YEAR OLD BUNDESLIGA GOAL RECORD WITH LAST-GASP BAYERN GOAL

Robert Lewandowski broke a 49-year Bundesliga record by scoring his 41st goal of the season in the very last minute of Bayern Munich’s final 2020/21 outing at home to Augsburg.

The Poland striker had already equalled Bayern legend Gerd Mueller’s long-standing record, set all the way back in 1972, for the most goals in a single Bundesliga campaign, getting on the scoresheet for the 40th time in last weekend’s 2-2 draw away at Freiburg.

Nevertheless, he appeared set to miss out on the 41st in Saturday’s 5-2 thrashing of Augsburg, first spurning a number of golden opportunities to write history.

But just as it seemed the chance to break the record would pass him by, Lewandowski capitalised on a rebound in the box, pouncing on the loose ball and rounding the goalkeeper before stroking it home in the 90th minute.

That strike means he has produced the highest ever return in a single Bundesliga campaign with his remarkable tally of 41 goals in 29 appearances.

After etching his name into German football folklore, Lewandowski told BT Sport: “It’s difficult to say about my emotions because I’m very happy, I’m very proud.

“Also, I want to dedicate this goal to my mother because she has her birthday today, and also to Hansi Flick and all the staff – because they did an amazing job.

“We’ve worked together and had amazing performances since Hansi Flick’s [been] here, so that was something special also for me as a player.

“I’m feeling great. I don’t know exactly what I did yet, but I’m very proud, very happy and my emotions are high.

“I have to say that I never dreamt about breaking this record, to score more than 40 goals, because I thought that it’s impossible if you have only 34 games – and I played 29 games.

“So that’s why I still don’t believe what I did. But after this whole game I scored in the last seconds, the last minute. I was trying before three, four, five times to score even just one goal and I couldn’t.

“And the last situation came and I scored the goal. That is something special, something historic. I still don’t believe it but maybe tomorrow, maybe even one or two weeks later, I will understand what I did.”
