RELENTLESS RANGERS RECORD RARE OLD FIRM DERBY SUCCESS AS THEY SWEEP ASIDE CELTIC

Philippe Clement enjoyed his first Old Firm win at the seventh attempt after his makeshift Rangers side steamrollered Celtic 3-0 at Ibrox.

Midfielder Ianis Hagi fired in from outside the box after seven minutes and the rattled Hoops struggled to keep at bay the relentless Light Blues, who were shorn of several key players.

Brendan Rodgers’ side, without the backing of away supporters, saw a Kyogo Furuhashi goal chalked off for offside early in the second half before Gers defender Robin Propper bundled in a second in the 65th minute.

Substitute Danilo knocked in a third in the 81st minute soon after climbing off the bench.

Clement will have bragging rights from the Glasgow derby for the first time since becoming Gers boss in October 2023 and stave off talk of the sack which has dominated his narrative in recent weeks.

The Light Blues are now 11 points behind the William Hill Premiership leaders and title hopes still remain unlikely, but the psychological boost of the victory was clear by the celebrations at the final whistle.

More upheaval around Rangers preparations seemed to be a portent of another difficult afternoon against their great rivals.

After dropping five points in their previous two games, Rangers went into the game lacking any momentum and were decimated defensively.

Goalkeeper and vice-captain Jack Butland had to pull out on New Year’s Day with a leg issue, joining skipper James Tavernier and fellow defenders Leon Balogun, John Souttar and Neraysho Kasanwirjo on the sidelines.

Liam Kelly, in his second spell at Ibrox but who only made his debut on December 21st, deputised for Butland, while left-back Ridvan Yilmaz started on the other side of the pitch as Tavernier’s replacement and Nico Raskin was named captain.

There was much less drama around Celtic, who emerged from 2024 with only two defeats in the year – Borussia Dortmund and Hearts – and Callum McGregor, left-back Greg Taylor and forward Daizen Maeda all returned to starting line-up.

But it was to be Rangers’ day.

The Parkhead side survived an early VAR check for a penalty before Hagi struck, taking a Raskin pass and drilling a shot from 20 yards low past Hoops goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel for his first goal in the league this season.

Ibrox reverberated with noise and in the 14th minute Vaclav Cerny’s deflected shot from distance clipped the bar before going over.

Rangers pushed forward relentlessly and in the 38th minute it took a great tackle by Hoops defender Cameron Carter-Vickers to prevent Mohamed Diomande getting in a shot on goal with only Schmeichel to beat.

But the first half ended with Kelly making a fine save from a Reo Hatate drive following a Celtic corner, with Raskin soon booked for grabbing already-booked Hoops captain Callum McGregor.

Furuhashi had the ball in the Rangers net in the 53rd minute after lobbing Kelly but the offside flag was up, with a VAR check confirming the decision.

On the hour-mark, Cerny raced clear and fired a shot past Schmeichel only to see the ball rebound off the far post and roll back across goal.

Rodgers brought on Alex Valle, Luke McCowan and Adam Idah for Furuhashi, Taylor and Paulo Bernardo just before the home side doubled their lead.

After Schmeichel saved a low drive from Cerny at his near post, the Czech Republic winger curled in a corner and when Raskin’s header was blocked on the line by Idah, Propper sent the loose ball high into the net.

Rangers went looking for a third which came when Danilo, on for Nedim Bajrami, scored from close range after a driving run from left-back Jefte ended with his shot being blocked by Carter-Vickers and falling for the Brazilian striker.

The one downside on the day for Rangers came late on when Celtic substitute Arne Engels went down near the corner flag after appearing to be struck by an object, before carrying on after treatment.

BRENDAN RODGERS: Everton’s Premier League plight as evidence that money alone cannot bring success.

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers has cited Everton’s Premier League plight as evidence that money alone cannot bring success.

The Foxes head for Goodison Park on Wednesday evening to face a club engaged in a desperate fight for top-flight survival despite investing in excess of £560 million (€674 million)in new players over the last six years or so.

Asked what had gone wrong on the blue half of Merseyside, former Liverpool boss Rodgers said: “It’s well-documented there’s a lot of money been spent – a lot of money – but if it doesn’t all join up, then it doesn’t really matter.

“They’ve got good players who go out and work hard and make it difficult, and they’ve got players with quality, so it’s probably frustrating for the supporters, I’m sure, because it’s a huge club and the investment’s been huge, and they probably wanted better.

“There was obviously a spell on Merseyside at the time I was there when Roberto Martinez was doing really well with them, so it’s tough.

“I think Frank Lampard will do really well as a manager. He’s gone in there with a really good team of coaches, but of course that overall vision of the club is so, so important.”

The Toffees sit just three points clear of the drop zone – although with games in hand on the teams below them – despite a priceless 1-0 victory over Manchester United last time out.

By contrast, Leicester lie ninth, 12 points adrift of seventh-placed West Ham, but having played three games fewer, and are through to the semi-finals of the Europa Conference League.

However, they suffered a setback on Sunday when, after dominating for long periods despite making eight changes to the side which had beaten PSV Eindhoven in Holland three days earlier, they were beaten 2-1 at Newcastle thanks to Bruno Guimaraes’ 95th-minute winner.

A philosophical Rodgers said: “Of course when you lose, there is that disappointment. But for me it’s clear, the analysis of the game. For large periods, we were in control, we were very good.

“You’ve just got to manage the game to see it out, and that’s cost us a few times this season. It’s a case of reinforcing a lot of our good moments and reflecting and learning and hopefully go on to win the next game.

“It’s a credit to the players that this is the first game we’ve lost coming off a European match, so it shows the mentality and resilience in the squad. We’ll take that on to the Everton match on Wednesday.”

BRENDAN RODGERS TRUSTS LEICESTER TO BOUNCE BACK FROM CARABAO CUP DISAPPOINTMENT

Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers is confident his players will bounce back quickly from their Anfield penalty shoot-out heartbreak to meet the considerable challenge of facing Premier League leaders Manchester City.

The Foxes twice conceded a two-goal lead in the midweek Carabao Cup quarter-final against Liverpool – including an equaliser deep into added time – and then lost on spot-kicks.

More injuries were sustained in the process – striker Jamie Vardy played the last 20 minutes with a tight hamstring while defenders Caglar Soyuncu and Ricardo Pereira were forced off – which does not make their task any easier on Boxing Day.

Leicester have a decent recent record against City, with two wins in the last four meetings, but Pep Guardiola’s side look a different prospect this season.

“There is always disappointment but I said before the game ‘You are coming to Anfield, a great place to play, and whatever happens let’s impose our way’,” said Rodgers.

“That’s what I’ve always had from these players. They have been competitive against the best teams in the country and we saw that, we just couldn’t do enough to get over the line.

“They are such an honest bunch of players and it is always disappointing when you lose but I’ll get them going again.

“They (City) are playing well at the minute, so we will just have to see where we are at and then devise a plan with the players available and see what we can do.

“It doesn’t look like there are too many (City) players out, they’ve had a free week without a midweek game. They are a brilliant side with technical players, world-class players, and they are used to winning.

“We’ve done OK against them but it’s going to be a big challenge for us and we need to play with the spirit we played with against Liverpool.”

Their last two wins were in the Community Shield in August and a remarkable 5-2 victory at the Etihad in September 2020.

However, City are on an eight-match winning run in the league and have failed to win only one of the last 11.

“I think you see from the game at Liverpool we can score goals, we are creative, but we have to see what we have available at the weekend and we will try to come up with a plan to get a result,” Rodgers added.

“We went there last season and got a fantastic win. You know the challenge you are up against: they will dominate the ball and are good in transition and have the confidence to play so that’s the challenge at the weekend.

“They have top players, not too many injuries. They can rotate and change and they are playing their game, a high-level positioning game. They are virtually press-resistant, they can play through pressure and when you sit deep they have players of real intelligence to find spaces.

“You have to play with courage, and when you have the ball you have to exploit the spaces.”

A player who will be key to that is James Maddison, who is enjoying a run of five goals in his last seven appearances – the latest of which was a brilliant dipping strike against Liverpool.

“He is a real threat and to score at the Kop end a goal of that quality he will always remember that, a great strike,” said Rodgers.

“He is starting to get back to the levels and producing, which is what he has to do: create goals, score goals, work hard, and he is doing all of that.”

LEICESTER BOSS, BRENDAN RODGERS RULES OUT MOVE TO TOTTENHAM

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers said he has no interest in leaving the Premier League club for the vacant job at Tottenham.

The former Liverpool and Celtic manager, 48, had been touted as a leading candidate to join Spurs after they sacked Jose Mourinho last week.

Leicester are third in the Premier League — on track to qualify for next season’s Champions League — while Spurs are five points off the top four after a disappointing season.

“Tottenham is a great club, one of the biggest clubs in Britain, but for me I’m just in a really, really happy place in my life,” Rodgers said, according to media reports.

“I have a huge respect here for the players, the board and I really feel that I want to continue my work here.

“I’m very, very happy here and I’m happy because I’ve got a set of players that give me their heart and soul every single day and also I can see a future here in terms of the development of the squad.”

The Northern Irishman, who joined Leicester in 2019, said he had a strong relationship with the board at the King Power Stadium.

“I think over the last couple of years what we’ve been able to do is build an infrastructure around behaviour and creating a mindset in order to win,” he said.

“That’s not easy and it’s taken us a couple of years but you see now the mentality around developing that will and desire to win.

“And now for the next period of years let’s see if we can roll that out now that we’ve created that mentality.”

German champions Bayern Munich announced this week B Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann, who had also been linked with the Tottenham job, would be joining them from next season.

BRENDAN RODGERS CONFIRMS JAMIE VARDY INJURY BLOW FOR LEICESTER.

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that Jamie Vardy will undergo surgery to fix a hernia injury. The Foxes are flying high in the Premier League having won their last three games and they currently sit third in the Premier League, two points behind leaders Manchester United.

Vardy, meanwhile, has scored 11 goals in the Premier League this season but the 34-year-old has found the back of the net only once in his last seven appearances. And Rodgers has now confirmed that the striker will be sidelined for Leicester’s upcoming run of games due to a hernia problem which has required surgery to fix.

Jamie Vardy will be out for a few weeks,’ said Rodgers.

As you know, we’ve been managing him over this last number of months, and he’s been absolutely fantastic.

We have a window now that allows him to have a minor operation on his hernia and then he’ll be back within a few weeks. He’ll be out for that period. ‘It’s one that doesn’t keep him out for too long, but it’s just a repair in and round that hernia area.

It’s one we feel he can’t really put it off much longer. ‘We were hoping to do it a few weeks back, but this is window where we can get it done and that will obviously leave him with a good part of the season where he can be really influential for us.’
