BUNDESLIGA: BORRUSIA ENDS WINLESS RUN WITH 3-0 VICTORY AT SCHALKE

FC Schalke 04 were beaten 3-0 by Borussia Mönchengladbach at the VELTINS-Arena on Saturday evening, helping Mönchengladbach break their winless run in the league in a while. Lars Stindl opening the scoring in the first half, before Stefan Lainer added a second and then Frederik Rönnow scored an unlucky own goal.

Dimitrios Grammozis made two changes to the side that lost in Wolfsburg last weekend. Omar Mascarell, who missed that game after accumulating five yellow cards, replaced Amine Harit, while Matthew Hoppe came into the starting XI for Alessandro Schöpf. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar made the bench after his recent injury troubles.

The visitors enjoyed the majority of possession in the opening stages at the VELTINS-Arena, which meant Schalke looked to create chances from quick counter attacks. Despite several promising openings, the final pass was often lacking for the Royal Blues.

Gladbach took the lead after a quarter of an hour. Marcus Thuram burst down the left-hand side and his cross was parried by Frederik Rönnow. William’s clearance didn’t have enough on it and it fell to Florian Neuhaus. His shot was blocked, but Lars Stindl hammered the rebound into the roof of the net (15’). Referee Tobias Stieler allowed the goal to stand after discussions with VAR in Cologne as there were claims that the ball went out before Thuram’s cross.

Benito Raman’s shot from range flew over the Gladbach goal with 27 minutes played. Nonetheless, the away side continued to have the best opportunities after going ahead. Alassane Pléa couldn’t get on the end of Stefan Lainer’s inviting cross across the box (32’). Two minutes later, Pléa played it through to Thuram, who saw his shot just go wide into the side-netting. Florian Neuhaus then found space in the box with some nice skill, however his strike ended up in the same place as Thuram’s.

Schalke’s best moment of the first half came five minutes before the end. Sead Kolasinac dribbled through the middle until the edge of the box and played it to Kerim Calhanoglu on the left. The full-back’s powerful shot was punched away by Yann Sommer.

Borussia continued to carve out more chances in the second half and Schalke’s efforts going forward never came to fruition. Instead, Rönnow was in action frequently. The Dane tipped over an attempt from Pléa to keep the score at 1-0 (57‘). Six minutes later, however, he was beaten for a second time – Stefan Lainer was left unmarked from a corner and he headed home at the front post (63’).

Twenty minutes before full time, Rönnow parried a Neuhaus shot from distance (71’), but moments later he was picking the ball out of the net following an unfortunate own goal. Nico Elvedi headed on goal from a Pléa cross and the ball slipped away from the goalkeeper on landing and carried just over the goal line for a third Gladbach goal (73’).

Comfortably in the lead, the visitors controlled the final 15 minutes of the affair, but other than a Thuram effort saved by Rönnow (76’), there were no more notable chances.

Bayern Confirm Interest In Dortmund Striker Haaland

Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich confirmed their interest in Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland as manager Hansi Flick admitted a transfer is ‘very much possible’.

Haaland has emerged as one of the hottest commodities in Europe, and put it on full display against Bayern at the weekend.

The Norwegian international scored twice in nine minutes to stun Bayern into an early deficit.

Bayern manager Flick was asked about Haaland one day replacing Lewandowski, with a deal far from out the picture.

He told Sky Germany before the game: “Very, very much is possible in life, nothing can be ruled out.

“But that is a long way off. He has a long-term contract in Dortmund and is an option for many top clubs.”

Bayern prized Lewandowski away from their rivals in 2014, having also done the same with Mario Gotze and Mats Hummels.

But Gotze and Hummels both ended up returning to Dortmund.

Bayern are not the only ones interested in 20-year-old Haaland, who improved to 19 goals in as many Bundesliga games.

Manchester United last season failed in a move for the forward, despite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer meeting with the player.

And now United are joined by City and Chelsea in the pursuit for the serial goalscorer.

Real Madrid are also linked with Haaland, with the view of replacing frontman Karim Benzema, 34.

Haaland’s contract expires in 2024, but a £65million release clause is understood to come into play two years beforehand.

ROBERT LEWANDOWSKI HATRICK STUNS DORTMUND IN KLASSIKER THRILLER

Robert Lewandowski scored a hat-trick to leave him on 31 Bundesliga goals this season and seal Bayern Munich’s 4-2 comeback win over Borussia Dortmund in Germany’s ‘Klassiker’.

Dortmund raced into a 2-0 lead as Erling Haaland netted twice in the first nine minutes behind closed doors at the Allianz Arena.

However, Lewandowksi then struck twice, the second from the penalty spot, to haul Bayern level before the break.

Leon Goretzka put Bayern ahead for the first time with two minutes left before Lewandowski completed his hat-trick on 90 minutes.

“The quality is certainly there, that’s our DNA,” said Thomas Muller of Bayern’s fightback.

The win leaves Bayern two points clear of RB Leipzig at the top of the table.

“We shook ourselves up at 2-0 down and deserved to win because we were the dominant team for (the last) 60 minutes,” said Bayern coach Hansi Flick.

Bayern have won the last five meetings between the clubs.

“We weren’t good enough. We started well, but didn’t play good enough football. We should have been more brave,” said Dortmund midfielder Emre Can.

The match delivered on its billing as the battle of the Bundesliga’s star strikers.

Haaland scored with just two minutes gone when his shot clipped the heel of Jerome Boateng.

Bayern were reeling after nine minutes when Thorgan Hazard flicked the ball back inside for Haaland to again smash the ball home.

Dortmund could have been 3-0 up on 25 minutes but Thomas Meunier squandered the chance to shoot.

A minute later, Bayern pulled a goal back when Leroy Sane squared the ball for Lewandowski to score.

Bayern went into the break level when Mahmoud Dahoud brought down Kingsley Coman in the area and Lewandowski converted the penalty.

After a frantic first-half, the tempo dropped in the second as both teams suffered key injuries.

“We started great and ended very badly,” admitted Dortmund coach Edin Terzic.

Haaland came off after an hour gone with a cut on the back of his ankle.

With ten minutes left, Boateng had to be helped off in clear discomfort after twisting his knee.

Dortmund were left fuming for what captain Marco Reus claimed was a foul on Can late on.

“It was a clear foul – if that had been against Bayern, it would have been given,” fumed Marco Reus.

Bayern settled the matter when Goretzka pinged his shot in off the post before Lewandowski completed his hat-trick with an outstanding low drive.

With ten games left, Lewandowski threatens to break Gerd Mueller’s all-time record of 40 Bundesliga goals in the 1971/72 season.

Earlier, RB Leipzig briefly climbed top of the table with a 3-0 romp at Freiburg thanks to goals by Christopher Nkunku, Alexander Sorloth and Emil Forsberg.

SCHALKE FIRE MANAGER CHRISTIAN GROSS AFTER TWO MONTHS IN CHARGE

Schalke have fired manager Christian Gross on Sunday after just two months in charge along with four senior staff, in a desperate bid to avoid Bundesliga relegation.

The Gelsenkirchen-based club is bottom of the league and nine points from safety with 11 games remaining.

Gross was fired a day after a 5-1 loss at Stuttgart, leaving Schalke looking for their fifth coach of a turbulent season.

The 66-year-old Swiss coach arrived in December with more than 30 years of coaching experience around the world, including a spell with Tottenham from November 1997 to September 1998, but hadn’t coached in Europe since 2012.

He led the team to its only win of the season to end a 30-game winless run in the Bundesliga, but couldn’t build on that, with Schalke earning just five points from his ten league games in charge.

David Wagner was fired as manager in September before his successor Manuel Baum followed in December. The team played two games under stand-in Huub Stevens before appointing Gross.

Sporting director Jochen Schneider, who was due to leave at the end of the season, was also fired, as was the team coordinator Sascha Riether, lead fitness coach Werner Leuthard and assistant coach Rainer Widmayer.

Schneider on Saturday denied reports of mutiny within the squad amid reports that several players had asked for Gross to be replaced.

Schalke didn’t name a new coach and said Monday’s training session would be conducted by fitness coaches.

The club said Peter Knabel, who heads the youth department, would take over Schneider’s sporting director role until further notice, with “a view to planning for the new season”, a sign the club is preparing for its first season in the second tier since 1991.

Former Germany striker Gerald Asamoah moves up from overseeing the under-23 team into Riether’s coordinator role.

‘The sporting situation is clear. That’s why we have to think beyond the season for every decision regarding personnel,’ said Jens Buchta, chairman of the supervisory board.

He added: ‘At the same time the team is obliged to play the last third of the season as successfully as possible. The players owe it to the club and the fans.’

BUNDESLIGA: BORRUSIA DORTMUND GETS SECOND WIN A ROW, RETURNS TO TOP 5

Borussia Dortmund scored three second-half goals to ease past struggling Arminia Bielefeld 3-0 on Saturday, claiming their second straight win in the Bundesliga and climbing back into fifth place.

Mo Dahoud broke the deadlock two minutes after the restart with a low shot, after the hosts had dominated the first 45 minutes with more than 70% possession in some stretches of play.

Wolfsburg remained in third place with a 2-0 victory over Hertha Berlin.

Jadon Sancho made it 2-0 with a well-taken 58th minute penalty, confirming his fine form with his sixth league goal.

Brazilian teenager Reinier notched his first ever Bundesliga goal to help lift Dortmund to fifth place on 39 points, three behind Frankfurt. The top four teams qualify for the Champions League next season.

The Ruhr valley club have now won their last three games in all competitions, including a 3-2 win at Sevilla in their Champions League round of 16 first leg.

LEWANDOWSKI, GNABRY ON TARGET AS BAYERN CRUSH COLOGNE

Bundesliga top scorer Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry both struck twice as Bayern Munich crushed Cologne 5-1 in the Bundesliga on Saturday to earn their first win in three league games and go five points clear at the top.

The champions, who next week face Borussia Dortmund, are on 52 points, with Leipzig, second on 47, taking on Borussia Monchengladbach later on Saturday.

VfL Wolfsburg remained in third place with a 2-0 victory over Hertha Berlin.

Apart from Lewandowski and Gnabry, Bayern were also indebted to Leon Goretzka who delivered another silky performance with three assists.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting opened the champions’ account with his first league goal this season, heading in Leon Goretzka’s cross at the far post in the 18th minute.

Lewandowski struck 15 minutes later, combining with Goretzka after a bad pass back from Cologne and the Pole made it 28 league goals from an assist by Thomas Mueller, seconds after the midfielder came on in the 65th minute following a coronavirus infection.

Mueller is the league’s top provider with 11 assists while Lewandowski is looking to break Gerd Mueller’s record of 40 league goals in one season dating back to the 1971-72 campaign.

Substitute Gnabry completed the rout with two late goals in four minutes.

‘For our way forward we have to stop having these shaky periods during the match,’ Gnabry said. ‘We have to reduce them and then we will be stronger.’

Such phases during their recent games have proved costly for Bayern, including a 3-3 against strugglers Arminia Bielefeld two weeks ago and their 2-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt last week.

Cologne had briefly cut the deficit four minutes after the restart with Ellyes Skhiri making the most of blunders by three Bayern defenders.

DAVID ALABA ANNOUNCES DEPARTURE FROM BAYERN MUNICH AT THE END OF SEASON

David Alaba has announced he will leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season.

The 28-year-old has spent the last decade with the Bundesliga champions and played a key role in their Champions League success in August.

After discussions with the club over a new deal, the Austria international has decided against extending his current terms and will become a free agent in the summer.

In a press conference, Alaba said: “I have made the decision to leave Bayern at the end of this season and try something new.

“It obviously wasn’t an easy decision – I’ve been here for 13 years and the club means a lot to me.

“I haven’t decided where I’m going next.”

Alaba, linked with a move to Real Madrid, started his career with Austria Wien before he made the move to Germany in 2008.

During a glittering spell at the Allianz Arena, he has won 24 trophies and Bayern remain on course to secure another Bundesliga title this season while they have progressed into the Champions League knockout stage.

MARCO ROSE TO JOIN DORTMUND NEXT SEASON FROM BORRUSIA MONCHENGLADBACH

After weeks of speculation, Borussia Mönchengladbach confirmed on Monday that head coach Marco Rose will leave the club at the end of the season in order to take charge of Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund.

The 44-year-old’s contract with Gladbach runs until 2022, but Dortmund are set to trigger a €5 million ($6m) release clause to bring Rose from one Borussia to the other.

“We’ve had many discussions about Marco’s future in recent weeks,” said Gladbach sporting director Max Eberl, after tabloid BILD and football magazine Kicker had broken the news. “Unfortunately, he has decided to make use of a clause in his contract and move to Borussia Dortmund in the summer.”

Dortmund themselves confirmed the move but said they would be refraining from commenting further until the end of the season.

Dortmund had made Rose their number one target to take over long term from former head coach Lucien Favre, who was sacked in December. Under interim coach Edin Terzic, the Black and Yellows have only won four out of ten league games and have dropped to sixth in the Bundesliga level on points with seventh place Gladbach.

Despite a poor recent run of form – Gladbach haven’t won in three games either and lost a local derby to Cologne last week – Rose’s rapid rise has quickly generated interest.

He began his coaching career with hometown club Lokomotive Leipzig in 2012 before coaching several Red Bull Salzburg academy teams. He took over Salzburg’s first team in 2017, winning the Austrian Bundesliga and qualifying for the Champions League for the first time.

He was headhunted by Gladbach sporting director Eberl ahead of the 2019-20 season and led the Foals to fourth place, returning them to the Champions League for the first time since 2016, where they progressed through a group containing Real Madrid and Inter Milan.

Under Rose’s tutelage, Gladbach have impressed with an aggressive pressing game and a potent attack built around Marcus Thuram, Alassane Pléa and captain Lars Stindl. Behind them, Florian Neuhaus and Denis Zakaria have developed into two of the Bundesliga’s top midfielders.

Gladbach’s offensive style of play has seen them outscore both Bayern Munich (3-2) and Borussia Dortmund (4-2) since the turn of the year, playing the sort of football that the BVB bosses want to see at the Westfalenstadion.

Rose will face his future employers again in the German Cup quarterfinal on March 2.

BAYERN BOUNCE BACK IN WIN AGAINST FREIBURG.

Bayern Munich opened up a four-point lead in the Bundesliga on Sunday as the German champion beat Freiburg 2-1 to return to winning ways after two rare defeats.

Thomas Muller knocked in the winning goal in the 74th minute on a snowy day in Munich to avoid a third winless game in a row, which would have been a record under coach Hansi Flick. The victory came after a 3-2 loss to Borussia M?nchengladbach in the league and elimination from the German Cup on penalties against second-division Holstein Kiel.

Even after Bayern slipped up, its title rivals have failed to take advantage. When Bayern lost to Gladbach last week, second-place Leipzig lost to Borussia Dortmund and followed up Saturday with a draw at Wolfsburg. Third-place Bayer Leverkusen and fourth-place Dortmund are in similarly mixed recent form.

After Bayern had an early penalty appeal for handball turned down on video review, Robert Lewandowski gave Bayern the lead in the seventh minute when he found space in the penalty area from a Muller pass.

Lewandowski had another shot deflected onto the crossbar in the 59th. Shortly after, Freiburg won a corner and substitute Nils Petersen scored with his first touch of the game at the far post with a diving header. That meant Bayern has conceded at least one goal in 11 Bundesliga games in a row since October.

With Bayern seemingly heading for a draw, Leroy Sane directed a Kingsley Coman cross on for Muller to score with a low shot, adding a goal to his earlier assist. Petersen hit the crossbar for Freiburg in stoppage time.

Eintracht Frankfurt plays Schalke later Sunday in what could be Serbian striker Luka Jovic’s first game for Frankfurt since returning to Germany on loan from Real Madrid.

HAALAND AND SANCHO LEAD DORTMUND TO 3-1 VICTORY AT LEIPZIG.

Borussia Dortmund scored three times in the second half with two goals from Erling Haaland and one from Jadon Sancho, to beat hosts RB Leipzig 3-1 on Saturday and close the gap to the top spots in the Bundesliga.

After a toothless first half Dortmund improved after the break, taking the lead when Halaand charged down the wing and Marco Reus flicked his cross on for Sancho to fire in.

The England international has now scored for the second consecutive game after failing to find the back of the net in the first 13 league matches of the campaign.

The visitors came close to a second goal in the 65th minute but Haaland’s powerful shot was tipped onto the crossbar by keeper Peter Gulacsi.

Leipzig, who had kept a clean sheet in their previous four league games, responded with a chance of their own two minutes later as Dani Olmo hit the post with his shot.

But Haaland got onto the score sheet, heading in a Sancho cross at the far post after launching the move himself in the 72nd minute.

The Norway international grabbed a second goal six minutes from the end when he was sent through by Reus to round Gulacsi before Leipzig scored in the 90th minute with Alexander Sorloth.

Dortmund are fourth in the standings on 28 points, five off leaders Bayern Munich, who lost 3-2 at Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday. Leipzig, who suffered their first home loss of the season, are in second place on 31.

“Everyone knows that today this was an extremely important game for us,” Dortmund’s Emre Can said, who came on after half an hour for the injured Axel Witsel.

“It was a game that would tell us which way our season will be going. It was decisive to win it.

“The last few weeks have not been easy. Now we want to launch our attack.”

Dortmund had won only one of their last five games of 2020 before December’s two-week winter break.
