CHELSEA MANAGER THOMAS TUCHEL ADMITS HE TRIED TO SIGN BRUNO FERNANDES

Thomas Tuchel has confessed he tried to sign Bruno Fernandes when he was head coach of Paris Saint-Germain.

The Chelsea manager takes on the Portuguese playmaker and Manchester United on Sunday but things could have been very different.

PSG’s sporting director made Tuchel aware of Fernandes and his qualities at Sporting Lisbon and the club fought hard to get him.

However, Fernandes sealed a move to United where he’s gone on to have an incredible impact – scoring 22 goals and assisting 13 in 38 appearances this season.

“My first sporting director in Paris was Antero Henrique, who is Portuguese,” said Tuchel.

“He knew Bruno very, very well. He fought hard to have a connection to him and to bring him to our team because he was a big personality for Sporting.

“An effective goalscorer, and an effective guy to make the other players around him dangerous.

“It was during my first year in Paris. We watched more and more games about him. We followed him and tried to be in touch with him to make it happen.

“He went another way. It’s bad for us, eh, that we have to play against him?”

Speaking about the impact Fernandes has made since joining a year ago, Tuchel added: “The impact he has since he arrived in Man United is indescribable. Unbelievable.

“Coming from Portugal — stepping in here, one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League, the strongest league in Europe, and to have this kind of impact, I have nothing but the biggest respect for this guy.

“He’s outstanding. He’s one of the best attacking midfielders in the world.

“He has a huge impact. He has such a big influence on their game, on their attacking game.

“It is key to defend against him, to be around him, to be close to him.”

UCL: OLIVIER GIROUD ACROBATIC HELP CHELSEA TO AN AWAY WIN AGAINST ATLETICO MADRID

Olivier Giroud produced another Champions League special to hand Chelsea the advantage in their last-16 tie with Atletico Madrid after a 1-0 first-leg win in Bucharest.

The Blues forward grabbed his sixth goal in the competition this season with an overhead kick in the 68th minute but it was only awarded after a lengthy VAR review.

It was thoroughly deserved for Thomas Tuchel’s side, who dominated for large parts and extended their unbeaten run under the German to eight games since his arrival on January 26.

A negative was bookings for Mason Mount and Jorginho, which rules them out of the second leg, but Atletico boss Diego Simeone knows his team will need to score at least twice next month to go through in normal time.

Callum Hudson-Odoi was a surprise name in the Blues starting line-up for this tie hosted in Romania due to coronavirus travel restrictions enforced by the Spanish government.

The England international had lasted only 31 minutes following his half-time introduction at Southampton on Saturday, but manager Tuchel played the youngster at right wing-back.

Chelsea’s night started on a poor note when inside 60 seconds Mount was booked for a foul on Joao Felix, meaning he will be suspended for the second leg at Stamford Bridge next month.

Edouard Mendy almost contrived to pile more misery on the visitors after a heavy touch in the penalty area but Saul was unable to make the most of the goalkeeper’s mistake.

After early pressure from Atletico, including a dangerous Luis Suarez centre across the face of goal, the Premier League side started to dominate possession and a long-range effort from Marcos Alonso represented the first shot on target from either side

It was routine for Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak, who had gone seven matches without a clean sheet and was forced into more strenuous action six minutes before the break as Timo Werner’s strike from a tight angle was well saved.

Goalless at the interval, Simeone would have been the happier of the two managers with numerous absentees including England full-back Kieran Trippier due to suspension.

Not long after Suarez saw an effort deflected wide by Andreas Christensen, Joao Felix fired an overhead kick off target following Cesar Azpilicueta’s poor headed clearance in a sign Atleti were set to be more adventurous in this half.

Jorginho became the second Chelsea player to be ruled out of the second leg in the 64th minute when he brought down Joao Felix, but four minutes later the away side were able to break the deadlock in style.

Alonso got forward well and his cross was deflected into the path of Giroud, who produced a superb overhead kick from 12 yards which beat Oblak and found the bottom corner.

It was immediately ruled out for offside, with Mount deemed to have knocked the ball forward for his team-mate, but after a lengthy VAR review it was adjudged Atletico centre-back Mario Hermoso had got the decisive final touch.

Giroud’s 11th goal of the season and sixth in this competition gave Chelsea a crucial away goal in the tie and Tuchel reacted instantly with the introduction of N’Golo Kante and Hakim Ziyech with 16 minutes left.

Reece James followed them on to the pitch soon after, with Hudson-Odoi taken off after 80 minutes on this occasion.

While Atletico pushed for an equaliser, Simeone made the surprise decision to take off Joao Felix and they suffered a second consecutive defeat.

It gives Chelsea the upper hand ahead of the return leg at Stamford Bridge on March 17, where the Blues will aim to make the quarter-finals for the first time in seven years

Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea taking shape after whirlwind start to his reign

Now it’s time for the toughest test by far of Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea tenure — a last-16 matchup in the UEFA Champions League against La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid.

It has been a whirlwind first month for Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea.

Seven games. Five wins. Two goals conceded. Zero losses. One public dressing-down of a player.

Oh, and thousands upon thousands of passes.

The net result is a widespread acceptance that Chelsea achieved an upgrade by firing club great Frank Lampard and replacing him with more of an experienced tactician in Tuchel, who has already put his own stamp on the team as he transitions to life in English soccer.

The schedule has been kind to the German coach so far, though, with Premier League matches against out-of-form teams (Wolves, Tottenham and Southampton) or relegation contenders (Newcastle, Burnley and Sheffield United) flanking an FA Cup game at second-division club Barnsley.

Now it’s time for the toughest test by far of Tuchel’s Chelsea tenure — a last-16 matchup in the Champions League against Atletico Madrid, the Spanish league leader, and its coach of nearly 10 years, Diego Simeone.

“This is exactly what we want, the biggest test,” Tuchel said Monday. “Because hopefully it brings out the best in us. It’s clear when play against Atletico what you get — you get hard fighting, an experienced team, a lot of mentality.

“We will do it in our way, and they will do it in their way.”

So what has been Chelsea’s “way” since the arrival of Tuchel on Jan. 26, a day after Lampard’s firing and a day before Tuchel took charge of his first match?

In a clear change of game plan, Tuchel immediately switched formation from Lampard’s 4-2-3-1 to a three-man defense with high wing backs and two sitting midfielders to protect the back line.

Further forward, Tuchel has looked to get more out of offseason signing Timo Werner by deploying him as an inside forward, positioned on the left and just off the main striker, which has alternated between Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham.

The slate has been wiped clean in the squad, with a number of players brought back in, including left wing back Marcos Alonso — who hadn’t played since September under Lampard — center back Antonio Rudiger and Callum Hudson-Odoi, a winger who is occasionally operating as a right wing back under Tuchel.

Cesar Azpilicueta, the dependable club captain, has been a regular in the team as a right-sided center half. His days had appeared numbered under Lampard.

Then there’s been the clear change in playing style, with Chelsea dominating the ball and having at least 70% possession in four of the seven matches. Against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Chelsea had 79% possession and completed 820 passes — more than any other team in a Premier League game this season.

Still, some old habits die hard. Chelsea continues to struggle to convert its dominance of matches and territorial pressure into goals, like in the 1-1 draw at Southampton on Saturday when Tuchel bemoaned his team’s “lack of precision.”

“I didn’t feel in the last 20 meters that we would kill the game,” he said.

Expect chances to be few and far between against Atletico’s experienced and famously rugged defense as Tuchel takes charge of a second different team in this season’s Champions League, having led 2019-20 runner-up Paris Saint-Germain in the group stage before getting fired in December.

Tuchel said Chelsea would have to “over-perform” to get past Atletico.

“This is only possible if you feel a bond between the players as a coach, and I feel these things,” he said.

Tuchel said Hudson-Odoi was in contention to start the first leg on Tuesday, having withdrawn the 20-year-old England international barely 30 minutes after bringing him on as a halftime substitute against Southampton — saying his “attitude” wasn’t right.

It was Tuchel’s first open spat with a player since arriving, underlining his reputation as a single-minded coach who is not afraid to speak his mind.

Tuchel said Monday he had spoken to Hudson-Odoi in front of the squad in training and that the matter was over.

“Sometimes you reflect, ‘Should I have done that?’” Tuchel said, “because the media, the outside, the family makes it bigger than it is meant. Still, I did it and I had the reaction I wanted.

“I said after the game this is the decision for today, this is the lesson to learn for him. For me, also.”

Indeed, Tuchel still has plenty to learn about his squad, underscoring the size of his task against Atletico as he looks to outwit a coach in Simeone who has been in his post since 2011.

“You know that you arrive at the highest level when you play Atletico in the first round of the knockouts,” Tuchel said. “We feel confident. We feel excited.”

MINAMINO HELP SAINTS END LOSING RUN IN CHELSEA 1-1 DRAW

Southampton ended a run of six defeats as they held in-form Chelsea to a 1-1 draw at St Mary’s Stadium.

Chelsea, on a run of four successive wins, dominated the first half, recording 72.5 per cent possession, but only had Marcos Alonso’s first-time shot in the sixth minute as their best chance.

Southampton went ahead on 33 minutes against the run of play with a cool finish from Takumi Minamino. The on-loan midfielder took Nathan Redmond’s through-ball before dummying Edouard Mendy and Cesar Azpilicueta to stroke in the ball.

The visitors equalised nine minutes after half-time through Mason Mount’s penalty, awarded for a foul on the midfielder by Danny Ings.

Southampton almost led again when Jannik Vestergaard’s header clipped the bar on 71 minutes.

Chelsea continued to dominate but could not find a winner, with Reece James blazing over their best opportunity.

Southampton stay 13th on 30 points, while a sixth match unbeaten under Thomas Tuchel keeps Chelsea in fourth, on 43 points, one ahead of West Ham United having played a match more.

TIMO WERNER ENDS GOAL DROUGHT AS CHELSEA BEAT NEWCASTLE

Olivier Giroud and Timo Werner scored in a nine-minute first-half spell to give Chelsea a 2-0 win over Newcastle United that takes them up to fourth in the table.

Giroud, an early substitute for the injured Tammy Abraham, was on hand to score the opener after a Werner cross was diverted into his path by Magpies goalkeeper Karl Darlow.

And then Werner scored his first Premier League goal in exactly 1,000 minutes when Mason Mount’s corner found its way to him at the far post.

Goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, playing his first league match since October, had to save from Jonjo Shelvey and Joe Willock after the break as Newcastle responded.

But at the other end, Darlow denied Marcos Alonso and Reece James.

Chelsea are now ahead of Liverpool and West Ham on 42 points, four behind Manchester United and Leicester.

Newcastle stay 17th on 25 points, seven ahead of Fulham.

TAMMY ABRAHAM HELP CHELSEA CRUISE PAST BARNSLEY TO BOOK A SPOT IN THE FA CUP Q/FINAL.

Tammy Abraham saved Chelsea’s blushes with a second-half winner at Barnsley as his side scraped through to the last eight of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win.

Abraham struck the fifth-round tie’s only goal from close range, but it was tough luck on Barnsley, who put up a valiant effort.

The Sky Bet Championship side had the game’s best chances against Thomas Tuchel’s mis-firing Blues.

But they fell short in their bid to pull off a repeat of their club’s heroics against Chelsea in the same competition 13 years ago.

The Reds produced a huge quarter-final upset in 2008 when Kayode Odejayi headed their winner, but this time they paid the price for failing to take their chances.

They were unlucky not to have led at half-time, with Callum Brittain twice going closest to breaking the deadlock.

The midfielder’s close-range effort from Alex Mowatt’s excellent cross in the 10th minute forced a superb reaction save from Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Then just before half-time Brittain fired goalwards following a clever corner routine only for his shot to be deflected off target.

In between, Chelsea were denied what appeared to be a penalty by referee Martin Atkinson.

Tammy Abraham galloped on to Billy Gilmour’s throughball and Barnsley defender Toby Sibbick caught the Chelsea striker’s foot as he slid in for a goal-saving challenge.

Tuchel sent on Reece James and Antonio Rudiger for Marcos Alonso and Andreas Christensen at the start of the second half in a bid to kick-start his mis-firing side.

But Barnsley continued to look the more dangerous. Cauley Woodrow’s effort was blocked by Rudiger before Chelsea flickered into life.

Callum Hudson-Odoi wriggled free of two Barnsley defenders on to the left edge of the penalty area, but pulled his 60th-minute shot wide.

The Londoners had not mustered an effort on target, but threatened again when Rudiger’s header from Hakim Ziyech’s free-kick flashed wide.

James added real pace and power down Barnsley’s left side and it was the England right-back who fashioned Chelsea’s breakthrough.

He stormed beyond Barnsley’s cover and his fine low cross was tapped home from close range by Abraham to give Chelsea a 64th-minute lead.

Replays showed Abraham was offside when James played the ball across and the Premier League side will be grateful there are no video assistant referees in the FA Cup.

Abraham then rescued Chelsea at the other end, bailing out Arrizabalaga.

The Blues goalkeeper failed to get anywhere near another Mowatt free-kick and Abraham headed Barnsley substitute Michael Sollbauer’s hooked effort off the goal-line from under the crossbar.

UCL: CHELSEA’S AWAY GAME AGAINST ATLETICO MADRID MOVED TO BUCHAREST

Chelsea’s away Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid will now take place in Bucharest due to coronavirus travel concerns.

The UK is implementing strict Covid-19 quarantine rules around people returning from Spain, meaning the first leg of the last-16 tie will be staged at the Arena Nationala in the Romanian capital.

“UEFA has confirmed that Chelsea’s Champions League round-of-16 first-leg match away against Atletico Madrid will now be played at the Arena Nationala in Bucharest in Romania,” a Chelsea statement read.

“The date of the match, Tuesday, February 23, and the kick-off (8pm UK time) will remain the same.

“The second leg at Stamford Bridge is on Wednesday, March 17 at 8pm.”

Spain is on a ‘red list’ of countries drawn up by the UK Government.

The first legs of Liverpool and Manchester City’s Champions League ties against RB Leipzig and Borussia Monchengladbach have been moved to Budapest, while Arsenal and Manchester United have seen the first legs of their Europa League last-32 clashes moved to Rome and Turin, respectively.

JORGINHO PENALTY EARNS CHELSEA DERBY WIN AT TOTTENHAM.

Jorginho’s first-half penalty proved the difference as Chelsea beat Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 to continue their unbeaten start under Thomas Tuchel.

Chelsea controlled the early proceedings and Jorginho fired them ahead from the spot on 24 minutes, after Timo Werner had drawn a foul from Eric Dier.

After half-time, Chelsea continued to dominate as Callum Hudson-Odoi flashed a shot wide, Marcos Alonso volleyed over and Mason Mount’s strike was well saved by Hugo Lloris.

However, Spurs threw caution to the wind late on and Carlos Vinicius, on his first Premier League start, headed an inviting cross from Serge Aurier wide.

Dier then narrowly missed the target with a free-kick as Spurs failed to find a way through.

A second successive win moves Chelsea up to sixth on 36 points.

Following a third consecutive defeat Spurs lie two places back with 33.

CHELSEA HELD TO BARREN DRAW IN TUCHEL’S FIRST MATCH.

Thomas Tuchel’s first match in charge of Chelsea ended in a 0-0 draw at home against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Chelsea controlled the early proceedings and Olivier Giroud narrowly failed to connect with Callum Hudson-Odoi’s teasing low cross.

After half-time, Chelsea continued to press for an opener, with Conor Coady pulling off two great blocks to deny Giroud.

At the other end, Pedro Neto chipped the ball over Edouard Mendy but his effort clipped the top of the crossbar.

Mateo Kovacic fired inches wide as Chelsea failed to find the breakthrough.

The result moves Chelsea up to eighth on 30 points, while Wolves are 13th on 23 points.

CHELSEA CONFIRM THOMAS TUCHEL AS NEW MANAGER.

Chelsea have announced the appointment of Thomas Tuchel as their new head coach.

The 47-year-old German moves to Chelsea after the departure of Frank Lampard on Monday and signs an 18-month contract with the possibility of an extension.

“We all have the greatest respect for Frank Lampard’s work and the legacy he created at Chelsea,” Tuchel told the club’s official website.

“At the same time, I cannot wait to meet my new team and compete in the most exciting league in football. I am grateful to now be part of the Chelsea family – it feels amazing!”

Tuchel’s most recent coaching position was at Paris Saint-Germain, whom he left in December 2020 after back-to-back league titles and guiding them to last season’s UEFA Champions League final.

He has also coached Augsburg, Mainz and Borussia Dortmund in the German Bundesliga.

“It is never easy to change head coach in the middle of the season but we are very happy to secure one of Europe’s best coaches in Thomas Tuchel,” said Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia.

Tuchel will be in the Stamford Bridge dugout when Chelsea host Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday.
