FRANK LAMPARD INSISTS HE HAS PLANS FOR OLIVIER GIROUD

Frank Lampard insists evergreen striker Olivier Giroud still has a vital role to play at Chelsea.

Blues boss Lampard hailed Rennes match-winner Giroud’s importance at Stamford Bridge, despite the 34-year-old already being linked with a January transfer.

The 44-goal France hitman is determined to reach next summer’s European Championships as Les Bleus’ top striker and could seek a move away from Chelsea for more regular game time.

Giroud’s powerful header snatched the Blues a 2-1 Champions League win at Rennes, securing safe passage to the last 16 with two matches in Group E still to play.

Lampard believes Giroud is managing to improve with age, and maintained the ex-Arsenal man is still highly valued at the Blues.

Asked if Giroud’s goal underlines just why Chelsea want him to stay at Stamford Bridge, Lampard said: ‘Yes, it does, and I’ve felt it first-hand, last year it was him or Tammy (Abraham) fighting for the No 9 spot.

‘Tammy had a great first half of the season, and then Oli in restart was fantastic.

‘And the things behind the scenes, everybody kind of feels from the outside to be fair what a great professional he is and how highly regarded he is by his team-mates and myself.

‘So for him to get a goal, you saw the reaction of his team-mates, he’s so professional in how he trains and looks after himself that age isn’t even a factor for him.

‘He’s getting better with age if anything in terms of how he looks after himself.

‘So he offers a lot for us and I keep saying it but the big schedule coming up and the way we play means I will rely on players.

‘So thankfully for me he’s a player that always keeps the right attitude if he’s not playing regularly, and I know when I call upon him that he comes in as he did.’

Callum Hudson-Odoi’s early strike had the Blues coasting until Serhou Guirassy’s late equaliser left Chelsea ruing a host of missed chances.

World Cup-winner Giroud climbed off the bench to complete a dramatic rescue act though, leaving Lampard once again praising the France star’s patience and professionalism.

‘At the moment Tammy is in great form as well, so I have to pick on face value to get the best for us,’ said Lampard.

‘I hope and I think Oli knows how much I’m happy with him and how much I rely on him in moments.

‘Every player wants to play every game, it’s an impossible part of my job to keep them all happy, but hopefully he knows and he feels content.

‘He got minutes coming on today, and there will be games when he starts for us as well. Hopefully we keep moving forward that way.’

NEWCASTLE 0-2 CHELSEA: ABRAHAM STRIKE TO GIVE BLUES CONVINCING WIN AT ST. JAMES’S PARK.

Tammy Abraham’s second-half goal helped move Chelsea to the top of the table in a 2-0 win at Newcastle United.

Chelsea went in front on 10 minutes as Mason Mount’s cross was turned into his own net by Federico Fernandez under pressure from Ben Chilwell.

The visiting team had a great chance to double their lead on the half-hour but Timo Werner shot wide when through on goal.

Chelsea sealed a third consecutive win in the league on 65 minutes when Werner beat three players before teeing up Abraham to score.

Sean Longstaff’s shot that struck the bar was the closest Newcastle came to a goal.

Chelsea are seven matches unbeaten and go above Leicester City on goal difference.

Newcastle remain on 11 points in 13th.

“Christian is a big part of our group. He has been working through an injury, but it really says a lot that he wanted to come into camp, be around the guys and continue to be a leader with this team,” Berhalter said in a statement released by U.S. Soccer.

U.S. Soccer did not indicate that Pulisic will be replaced on the USMNT roster, so the current roster stands at 23 players:

BURNLEY 0-3 CHELSEA: ZIYECH INSPIRES BLUES TO IMPRESSIVE VICTORY AT TURF MOOR

Hakim Ziyech scored one goal and created another on his first Premier League start as Chelsea beat Burnley 3-0 at Turf Moor.

Ashley Barnes had Burnley’s best chance on five minutes but, after controlling a ball over the top, the striker shot over.

Ziyech’s first Premier League goal came in the 26th minute, when the Moroccan converted a low shot that wrongfooted Nick Pope.

Chelsea doubled their lead on 63 minutes when Mason Mount’s corner was powerfully headed in by Kurt Zouma.

Ziyech turned provider seven minutes later for Timo Werner to make it 3-0, with the German only starting after Christian Pulisic was injured in the warm-up.

MENDY DENIES UNITED AS CHELSEA FORCE RED DEVILS TO BARREN DRAW.

Edouard Mendy produced a spectacular save to deny Marcus Rashford scoring a stoppage-time winner for Manchester United as they shared a goalless draw with Chelsea.

The Chelsea goalkeeper, who had thwarted the United striker when one-on-one with an outstretched leg in the first half, went full length to parry away Rashford’s curling strike.

Mendy had also turned behind Juan Mata’s curled effort in a first half of few chances.

United substitute Edinson Cavani almost scored with his first Premier League touch just before the hour, but his flick found the side-netting.

United are still searching for their first home win of the season and stay 15th with seven points.

A fourth match unbeaten leaves Chelsea sixth on nine points.

LAMPARD BELIEVES VAN DIJK’S INJURY WON’T DISRUPT LIVERPOOL’S SEASON

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has questioned to what extent Liverpool will be affected by the absence of Virgil van Dijk.

Van Dijk will undergo surgery on a damaged anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee having been the victim of an unpunished x-rated challenge from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in Saturday’s Merseyside derby at Goodison.

While Liverpool are reluctant to rule the defender out for the season, the player is facing a lengthy period on the sidelines.

The injury leaves Joel Matip and Joe Gomez as Liverpool’s only two recognised senior centre-backs, with midfielder Fabinho a makeshift alternative.

But while admitting any team would miss Van Dijk, Lampard has suggested the Reds could have the strength in depth to cope with the Dutchman’s absence over the remainder of the campaign.

“I think Virgil van Dijk is clearly an outstanding player,” said Lampard, speaking on Monday ahead of Chelsea’s Champions League group opener against Sevilla on Tuesday.

He’s one of the outstanding defenders in world football and has been for the last two or three seasons.

The loss of a player of that quality and that size is going to affect any team because individuals and the quality of individual players like that make huge differences.

“But we’re talking about Liverpool, we’re talking about a squad that’s been built, that are so strong, with a great manager so – of course nobody wants to lose a player like that and obviously I wish him my best when I see that sort of injury – but it remains to be seen how much it affects Liverpool.”

CHELSEA 3-3 SOTON: VESTERGAARD STUN BLUES WITH LATE EQUALISER.

Jannik Vestergaard’s stoppage-time header rescued a point for Southampton as they came from two goals down to draw 3-3 at Chelsea.

Timo Werner put Chelsea ahead on 15 minutes after a clever turn and run for his first Premier League goal.

The German got his second 13 minutes later, racing on to Jorginho’s lofted pass and coolly lifting the ball over Alex McCarthy before heading in.

Against the run of play, Danny Ings halved the deficit as he rounded Kepa Arrizabalaga to tap in just before half-time.

A defensive mix-up on 57 minutes allowed Southampton to equalise through Che Adams.

Two minutes later Werner found Kai Havertz, who restored Chelsea’s lead.

But in the second minute of added time, Theo Walcott’s shot was glanced in by Vestergaard to lift Saints to 10th on seven points.

Chelsea rise to sixth on eight points.

CHELSEA GOALEE, EDOUARD MENDY INJURED ON INTERNATIONAL DUTY.

Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has suffered a thigh injury while on international duty with Senegal. Mendy picked up the injury during a Senegal training session and has returned to London for assessment by Chelsea’s medical team.

Blues boss Frank Lampard will hope Mendy can recover in time to face Southampton at Stamford Bridge in his team’s next Premier League game on October 17. Chelsea also face Sevilla in their opening Champions League game and Manchester United in the Premier League following the international break. Mendy joined Chelsea from Rennes in 22 million pound ($28 million) deal last month.

The 28-year-old kept his first clean-sheet for the club in his first Premier League start against Crystal Palace last Saturday.

“The Senegalese Football Federation has announced the withdrawal from their squad of Edouard Mendy due to injury,” a Chelsea statement said on Friday.

“The goalkeeper sustained an injury to his right thigh during training on Wednesday and had a medical examination in a hospital in Rabat, where Senegal are due to play Morocco on Friday night.

“Mendy has since returned to Chelsea where he will undergo further examinations.”

Mendy was signed to replace error-prone Spaniard Kepa Arrizabalaga, who this week expressed confidence he can win back the Chelsea keeper’s jersey.

Kepa, the world’s most expensive keeper, kept a clean-sheet for Spain against Portugal on Wednesday.

If Mendy is sidelined by his thigh problem, Lampard will have to turn to Kepa or Willy Caballero.

EDOUARD MENDY SET FOR CHELSEA MEDICAL AFTER AGREEING TERMS WITH LONDON CLUB

Edouard Mendy is travelling to London to undergo his medical after Rennes accepted Chelsea’s latest offer for the goalkeeper as Frank Lampard also plots a move for West Ham star Declan Rice, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Chelsea have been in the market for a new keeper all summer due to doubts over Kepa Arrizabalaga after their club-record signing was axed by Lampard during the second half of last season following a string of poor performances.

Mendy has emerged as a prime target in recent weeks after impressing with Rennes last season and media reports recently show that Chelsea were closing-in on an £18m deal after submitting an improved offer for the Senegal international.

It appears the deal is now done as Romano claims Rennes have accepted Chelsea’s offer and Mendy is now en route to London to undergo his medical and complete his move to Stamford Bridge.

The Guardian journalist says personal terms have already been agreed with the goalkeeper so he’s set to become Chelsea’s latest big-money signing and it appears Lampard is still eyeing one more new arrival before the window closes.

Romano claims the Blues boss is still keen on signing Declan Rice and is weighing-up a formal swoop for the defensive midfielder but Chelsea are refusing to meet West Ham’s £74m [€80m] valuation.

So it looks like Mendy is set to join Chelsea over the coming days and the 28-year-old is expected to be immediately installed as Lampard’s number one with Arrizabalaga facing an uncertain future in West London.
