MAN UTD 3-3 EVERTON: CALVERT LEWIN LATE STRIKE BREAK MANCHESTER UNITED’S HEART

Dominic Calvert-Lewin stunned Manchester United in stoppage time as the striker secured Everton a hard-fought 3-3 draw at Old Trafford.

Just days on from the 9-0 annihilation on nine-man Southampton, the Red Devils looked set to celebrate another Old Trafford victory.

Scott McTominay had set Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side on course for victory, having recovered from Abdoulaye Doucoure and James Rodriguez cancelling out first-half efforts from Edinson Cavani and Bruno Fernandes.

But United’s soft underbelly from set-pieces was exposed in stoppage time, with Lucas Digne’s free-kick flicked on by Michael Keane and Calvert-Lewin directing home for Everton.

The hosts will be wondering how they conspired to throw away victory here, especially having gone into half-time two goals up thanks to Cavani’s fine header and Fernandes’ moment of magic.

Everton were level within seven minutes of the second half getting under way as Doucoure turned home before Rodriguez rifled home the leveller, only for McTominay to head home Luke Shaw’s free-kick.

Yet in stoppage time, Calvert-Lewin was there to pounce, sealing a memorable point at an empty Old Trafford.

WILFRED ZAHA ADDS TO CRYSTAL PALACE INJURY WOES

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson has bemoaned the club’s injury situation ahead of Monday’s trip to Leeds with Wilfried Zaha the latest player to be sidelined.

Zaha, the club’s top goalscorer with nine Premier League goals this season, was forced off during the midweek win at Newcastle with a hamstring problem.

It will rule Zaha out of the clash with Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds and he becomes the 10th first-team player in the Eagles’ treatment room.

“We don’t know how long it’s going to keep him out but he certainly won’t be available for this game and it could even be much longer than that,” Hodgson said.

“You never know with these hamstring injuries, but Wilf is incredible in terms of recovery so I wouldn’t want to put a definite timeline on it, but it is a muscle strain and all muscle strains take time to heal.

“Our people will be doing their level best to get him back on the field as soon as possible and until then we will miss him because he is a very important figure in our attacking play.”

Palace have been without Wayne Hennessey (thigh), Nathan Ferguson (knee) and Connor Wickham (thigh) for the majority of the season, and Mamadou Sakho (thigh), James Tomkins (eye) and Jeffrey Schlupp (hamstring) recently joined them in the physio room.

Hodgson’s problems were compounded last week when James McArthur (muscle) and James McCarthy (groin) missed the clash with Newcastle.

Full-back Joel Ward also sat out the trip to St James’ Park with a knock, but he could be part of the squad on Monday.

Hodgson added: “It is a strange situation. From being in a position where he had an awful lot of players available, especially in certain positions, now we are scratching around wondering who could play and fill in for us.

“I am hoping James McArthur, who has missed the last couple of games, with a bit of luck he might be back relatively soon but this weekend might be too quick for him.

“McCarthy is another week a“Joel Ward will have a chance to be available, so that is a possible advantage for us, but we won’t know until he does a training session with the physio tomorrow and then hopefully with us on Sunday before the trip to Leeds.”
way. Tomkins and Schlupp are much further away so that is where we are.

PREMIER LEAGUE BEGINS CONCUSSION SUBS TRIAL

Concussion substitutes could be used for the first time on Saturday as the Premier League entered a new era of combating head injuries.

Two permanent substitutions can now be made in the event of head injuries until the end of the season, even if all replacements have already been used.

Wolves striker Raul Jimenez was the most recent casualty of a serious head injury in the English top flight when he suffered a fractured skull in a clash of heads with David Luiz at Arsenal in November.

And former Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen said he felt the effects of a concussion he sustained playing for Spurs in the 2019 Champions League semi-final for the following nine months.

The protocols were approved at the annual business meeting of the International Football Association Board, the game’s lawmaking body, in December.

The one being used in the English competitions also allows for the opposition to make the equivalent number of changes, so that if one concussion substitute is used, they can make one change.

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers called the development “a good step forward” and suggested it should soon become a permanent arrangement.

Rodgers said: “It makes sense, I don’t see the negative in it.

“If there is an issue and a problem with a player and it doesn’t pressurise medics who are trying to treat someone, because you can make that extra substitute, it can only be a benefit.

“Ultimately the players’ health is really important, we have seen and heard some of the clashes which have gone on, it’s been horrible. If this helps the game we will always support that.”

JORGINHO PENALTY EARNS CHELSEA DERBY WIN AT TOTTENHAM.

Jorginho’s first-half penalty proved the difference as Chelsea beat Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 to continue their unbeaten start under Thomas Tuchel.

Chelsea controlled the early proceedings and Jorginho fired them ahead from the spot on 24 minutes, after Timo Werner had drawn a foul from Eric Dier.

After half-time, Chelsea continued to dominate as Callum Hudson-Odoi flashed a shot wide, Marcos Alonso volleyed over and Mason Mount’s strike was well saved by Hugo Lloris.

However, Spurs threw caution to the wind late on and Carlos Vinicius, on his first Premier League start, headed an inviting cross from Serge Aurier wide.

Dier then narrowly missed the target with a free-kick as Spurs failed to find a way through.

A second successive win moves Chelsea up to sixth on 36 points.

Following a third consecutive defeat Spurs lie two places back with 33.

DEAN SMITH FUMES AT VILLA PLAYERS FOR WESTHAM LOSS.

Dean Smith fumed at Aston Villa’s “Sunday League football” defending as his side went down 3-1 at home to West Ham.

It was Tomas Soucek and a double from Hammers debutant Jesse Lingard that did all the damage with Ollie Watkins striking what proved to be a mere consolation goal.

The result was Villa’s first defeat in four games at Villa Park while it leaves them ninth in the Premier League table.

Speaking afterwards, Smith was asked about what went wrong, and said: “Three horrendous goals we gave away. We didn’t play well. The better team won on the night and we weren’t our usual selves nor did we play with the same tempo we had been in previous games. We gave three awful goals away and you can’t do that at this level.

Listen, we’ve taken a short goal kick, gone forward to Ollie Watkins, it’s broke down and a midfield runner has broke off the back of us and scored. Then, we concede a goal from a counter attack when it’s our free-kick. In fact, Matt Targett does well to get himself out of that situation but we’re left three-vs-one. It’s Sunday League football, you wouldn’t do that and we got punished for it.

“We got ourselves back in the game with a ball down the side for Ollie. It was a good ball from Jack, another assist, and it looked like we were most-likely to get an equaliser but, again, the ball’s broke down again in the centre circle and have gone through and they’ve scored a poor third goal.”

Smith refused to blame Emi Martinez for a rare rick as the ball sailed through the Argentinian to make it 3-1.

The Villa boss added: “The third one he will feel he could do better with, that’s for sure but I’m certainly not going to moan about my goalkeeper making mistakes when he’s kept 10 clean sheets this season and has been one of our best players so far. He’s earned the right to make a mistake.”

Smith was asked about fatigue factor following the third game in a week, but said: “It’s not so much fatigue I don’t think. I’m never one to use that excuse. We had more days’ rest going into this game than we will do for Saturday’s game. We just didn’t have our usual tempo about us today.

“I just don’t think we had a zip about us tonight. I don’t know why. They were brighter than us. We made a change at half time to liven us up, we did that but we gave really poor goals away tonight and we can’t afford to do that at this level.”

IHEANACHO SCORES AS LEICESTER EDGE FULHAM AT CRAVEN COTTAGE.

Leicester City moved ahead of champions Liverpool in the Premier League table with a 2-0 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Kelechi Iheanacho headed in James Maddison’s pinpoint cross to give Leicester the lead after 17 minutes.

Kasper Schmeichel then tipped Tosin Adarabioyo’s powerful header over the bar to deny Fulham an equaliser before James Justin doubled the Foxes’ lead shortly before half-time.

The defender rounded Alphonse Areola before tucking in from close range for his second goal of the season.

Substitute Ivan Cavaleiro fired narrowly wide shortly after the restart and Bobby De Cordova-Reid’s effort found the side-netting as Fulham tried in vain to mount a comeback.

The result moves Leicester into third, two points ahead of Liverpool, who lost 1-0 at home against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Fulham stay 18th, seven points from safety, with 17 matches to play.

LINGARD NETS DEBUT DOUBLE AS WESTHAM BOUNCE BACK TO WIN 3-1 AT VILLA PARK.

Jesse Lingard marked his West Ham United debut with two second-half goals as David Moyes’ side beat Aston Villa 3-1 at Villa Park.

Both teams had first-half chances, Ollie Watkins clipping the outside of a post for the hosts and Tomas Soucek curling narrowly wide.

It was Soucek who broke the deadlock, latching on to Said Benrahma’s through-ball and picking out the bottom-left corner six minutes after the restart.

Lingard doubled West Ham’s lead five minutes later, controlling Michail Antonio’s cross on his chest before firing across Emiliano Martinez.

Watkins halved the deficit following a neat exchange with Jack Grealish but Lingard removed any chance of a Villa comeback with another finish through Martinez seven minutes from time.

A third straight away Premier League victory lifts West Ham to fifth with 38 points, two behind fourth-placed Liverpool.

Villa are six points behind the Hammers in ninth, with two matches in hand.

EZE STARS AS CRYSTAL PALACE DO A COMEBACK WIN AT NEWCASTLE.

Gary Cahill’s first Premier League goal for nearly four years earned Crystal Palace a turnaround win at Newcastle United.

The centre-half headed in Eberechi Eze’s right-wing cross to become Palace’s oldest Premier League goalscorer, aged 35 years and 45 days, and give Palace back-to-back victories for the first time since Matchweek 2.

Newcastle had made a fast start as Callum Wilson set up Jonjo Shelvey to volley the hosts ahead inside two minutes.

But Palace hit back with two goals in five minutes, with Jairo Riedewald’s shot deflecting in off Ciaran Clark before Cahill’s effort.

Ryan Fraser had a shot saved by Vicente Guaita and Miguel Almiron hit the top of the bar with a free-kick, but Newcastle could not find an equaliser.

Palace move up to 13th place on 29 points, while Newcastle drop to 16th on 22 points, eight above the relegation zone.

MAN UTD MATCH CITY’S GOAL WINNING RECORD WITH 9-0 BATCHING OF SOUTHAMPTON.

Manchester United equalled the biggest winning margin in Premier League history as they triumphed 9-0 against a Southampton side who finished with nine men.

Southampton made a nightmare start at Old Trafford as 19-year-old Alexandre Jankewitz was sent off just 79 seconds into his full Premier League debut for a high challenge on Scott McTominay.

Man Utd took advantage with Aaron Wan-Bissaka tapping in Luke Shaw’s cross before Mason Greenwood teed up Marcus Rashford to double the lead 25 minutes in.

Jan Bednarek then scored an own goal and Edinson Cavani headed in from a second Shaw assist to make it 4-0 at half-time.

After the break Bruno Fernandes set up substitute Anthony Martial to score before McTominay netted a fierce drive from long range.

It got even worse for Southampton when Bednarek was sent off for a denial of a goalscoring opportunity and Fernandes converted the resultant penalty.

Martial then struck his second before Daniel James rounded off the scoring with the last kick of the match, converting Fernandes’s header across the box.

United tie their own 9-0 win over Ipswich Town in 1995 and Leicester City’s victory by the same scoreline at Southampton in 2019.

It means they are behind Man City on goal difference alone but have played two matches more. Southampton drop to 12th after a fourth consecutive loss.

WOLVES BEAT 9-MAN ARSENAL 2-1 TO END WINLESS RUN.

Wolverhampton Wanderers ended their eight-match winless run as they beat an Arsenal team who had two players sent off.

Arsenal made a strong start with Bukayo Saka hitting a post and having a goal overturned for offside before they took a 32nd-minute lead.

Nicolas Pepe nutmegged two Wolves players before curling a beauty past Rui Patricio.

But the match turned in first-half stoppage time, when David Luiz brought down Willian Jose in the penalty area and was shown a straight red card for making no attempt to play the ball.

Ruben Neves converted the spot-kick and Wolves were quick to make their man advantage count.

Just three minutes into the second half, Joao Moutinho unleashed a long-range strike into the top corner to complete the turnaround with his first goal at Molineux.

Things got worse for Arsenal on 72 minutes as their goalkeeper, Bernd Leno, made a deliberate handball outside the box and was sent off for denial of a goalscoring opportunity.

The win leaves Wolves 14th, five points behind 10th-placed Arsenal, who were beaten for the first time in eight matches and missed the chance to go sixth.
