SIGURDSSON’S LATE GOAL MOVE EVERTON TO SECOND ON THE LOG.

Gylfi Sigurdsson’s 80th-minute strike earned Everton a fourth consecutive victory as they moved up to second place with a 1-0 win at Sheffield United.

Abdoulaye Doucoure teed up Sigurdsson, who took a touch before drilling a low shot into the bottom-left corner to clinch all three points.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Sigurdsson both fired narrowly off target during the first half, while Oliver Burke shot inches wide for Sheff Utd.

Enda Stevens lashed over the crossbar and substitute Oliver McBurnie missed an opportunity as Sheff Utd pushed for a late equaliser.

Everton kept their hosts at bay to move up to 29 points, two behind leaders Liverpool who have a match in hand at West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

Sheff Utd remain bottom of the table on two points.

EVERTON 0-2 MAN UTD: MARTIAL, CAVANI STAR AS UNITED SCORE LATE TO REACH CARABAO CUP SEMI FINAL.

Manchester United required late goals from Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial to overcome Everton with a 2-0 win in the Carabao Cup quarter-final.

United reached the semi-finals of three different competitions last season, and they made it to the last four of the first possible one with a narrow win at Goodison Park.

The first half saw Everton withstand some pressure from United, although there were not many major chances.

Everton goalkeeper Robin Olsen had a couple of shaky moments in the opening stages.

He wasn’t troubled, though, when Mason Greenwood glanced a header wide in a decent chance.

At the other end, Everton were struggling to get the ball to Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Instead, they had to rely on set pieces for chances, with Gylfi Sigurdsson seeing a free kick saved, for example.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with few clearcut opportunities.

However, as the prospect of penalties loomed, Cavani got a crucial goal.

After being fed the ball by Martial, the Uruguayan striker fired a left-footed finish home across Olsen’s dive. It was his first goal in the competition on his first appearance in it.

Stoppage time was frantic and end-to-end as Everton pushed for an equaliser and United tried to punish them on the counter attack.

As the clock ticked down, Marcus Rashford slid in fellow substitute Martial for a neat finish to double the lead with the last kick of the game.

United have still not conceded in the competition this season. They consequently book their place in the semi-finals alongside Manchester City, Tottenham and Brentford.

Yerry Mina’s first-half header helped Everton to a third successive win as they beat Arsenal 2-1 at Goodison Park to go second.

Everton started strongly, with Michael Keane firing narrowly wide from distance, before they took the lead on 22 minutes.

Alex Iwobi’s right-wing cross was met by Dominic Calvert-Lewin and his header went in off Rob Holding for an own goal.

Arsenal were level on 35 minutes, through Nicolas Pepe’s penalty after Ainsley Maitland-Niles had been fouled by Tom Davies.

On the stroke of half-time, Mina restored Everton’s advantage, heading in Gylfi Sigurdsson’s corner at the near post.

After the break Arsenal pressed Everton, but the closest they came to an equaliser was when David Luiz’s deflected shot hit a post.

Everton held on to go second with 26 points, five behind Liverpool.

Arsenal stay 15th on 14 points after a fourth defeat in five matches.

LEI 0-2 EVE: RICHARLISON, HOLGATE PUNISH FOXES AT THE KING POWER STADIUM.

Goals by Richarlison and Mason Holgate made it back-to-back victories for Everton as they won 2-0 at Leicester City.

Richarlison put Everton in front after 21 minutes, cutting in from the left before unleashing a low drive from 20 yards out that Kasper Schmeichel couldn’t prevent from finding the bottom-right corner.

Leicester responded, with Cengiz Under forcing Everton goalkeeper Robin Olsen into a save, while Abdoulaye Doucoure produced a well-timed challenge to deny Jamie Vardy.

Youri Tielemans dragged a shot wide for Leicester early in the second half before Holgate fired in from close range to double Everton’s advantage.

EVERTON 1-0 CHELSEA: SIGURDSON PENALTY ENDS CHELSEA UNBEATEN RUN.

Sigurdsson penalty ends Chelsea’s unbeaten run
Gylfi Sigurdsson’s first-half penalty earned Everton a 1-0 win over Chelsea at Goodison Park.

Everton were awarded the spot-kick in the 22nd minute after Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy had fouled Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Sigurdsson sent Mendy the wrong way for his first Premier League goal of the season.

Chelsea came close to a quick response when Reece James hit the inside of the post with a shot from distance.

Three minutes after half-time Mason Mount clipped the crossbar with a deft lob over the advanced Jordan Pickford.

And, after a second penalty award for a foul on Calvert-Lewin was overturned by the VAR for offside in the build-up, Mount hit the woodwork again, from a free-kick.

Everton held on to move up to seventh on 20 points.

Chelsea, who lost for the first time in 10 PL matches, lie third on 22 points.

BURNLEY 1-1 EVERTON: CALVERT-LEWIN EARNS EVERTON A DRAW AT TURF MOOR.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s league-leading 11th goal of the season earned Everton their first Premier League draw with Burnley.

Burnley had taken a third-minute lead when Ashley Westwood pounced on Allan’s error to feed Robbie Brady, who shot low for his first goal in a year.

The returning Nick Pope denied Calvert-Lewin from close range before keeping out Richarlison’s shot.

Shortly after Jordan Pickford had denied Chris Wood, Everton equalised in first-half stoppage time. Richarlison crossed for Calvert-Lewin to convert.

After the break, Pope tipped behind James Rodriguez’s curling shot while Wood’s header was kept out by Pickford at the other end.

Pope saved well with his feet from substitute Gylfi Sigurdsson in the closing stages as both teams had to settle for a point.

Everton are ninth on 17 points, while Burnley stay 19th on six points.

When Harrison did beat Pickford on two occasions, his first effort was cleared off the line by Ben Godfrey while his header came back off a post.

FULHAM 2-3 EVERTON: CALVERT LEWIN BRACE HELP TOFFEES BACK TO WINNING WAYS AT CRAVEN COTTAGE.

Two goals by the Premier League’s leading scorer Dominic Calvert-Lewin helped Everton overcome Fulham 3-2 at Craven Cottage.

NEWCASTLE 2-1 EVERTON: CALLUM WILSON DOWNS THE TOFFEES AT ST. JAMES’S PARK.

A second half brace from Callum Wilson helped Newcastle United to all three points against Everton.

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford found himself taken out of the firing line as Toffees boss Carlo Ancelotti handed Robin Olsen a debut.

The Swede made a decent block from Allan Saint-Maximin to help keep the game goalless at half-time.

But Newcastle broke the deadlock in the 56th minute when Callum Wilson converted a penalty after being fouled by Andre Gomes at a corner.

Everton, missing the likes of playmaker James Rodriguez and suspended Brazilian frontman Richarlison, could not find a way back into the match.

Wilson wrapped up victory with a second goal five minutes from time when he slotted in after Ryan Fraser’s cross had deflected up off Everton defender Yerry Mina.

Despite a stoppage-time goal from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Newcastle saw out the closing stages as goalkeeper Karl Darlow tipped a late effort over.

The Toffees remain second, three points behind Merseyside rivals Liverpool, while Newcastle move into the top 10.
