LEEDS HOLD MAN UTD. TO GOALESS DRAW AS CITY EDGE CLOSER TO TITLE

Manchester United were held to a 0-0 draw at Leeds United that gives Manchester City the chance to win the title next weekend.

The Red Devils are now 10 points behind the league leaders with five matches left, meaning City will win the title if they beat Crystal Palace on Saturday and Man Utd lose to Liverpool on Sunday.

The visitors had the best opportunities at Elland Road, with Marcus Rashford going closest in the first half as his free-kick was well saved by Illan Meslier.

Man Utd’s best chance fell to Bruno Fernandes from Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s pass on the hour mark, but he dragged his shot wide.

Leeds went close shortly after that chance when Helder Costa’s deflected shot landed on the roof of the net, but neither side could make a breakthrough.

A sixth match unbeaten lifts Leeds up to ninth with 47 points.

Manchester United stay second with 67 points and are now 13 matches without defeat.

WOL 0-4 BUR: CHRIS WOOD FIRST PREMIER LEAGUE HATRICK HELP BURNLEY GET CLOSER TO SAFETY

Chris Wood scored his first Premier League hat-trick and claimed an assist as Burnley moved nine points clear of the bottom three with a 4-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

All three of Wood’s goals came in the first half, with the opener arriving on 15 minutes when he finished superbly into the bottom-left corner from Matthew Lowton’s pass.

His second was a tap-in at the far post after Dwight McNeil had pounced on a loose clearance.

The striker completed his treble just before the break when he powered in a header from McNeil’s corner to become the first player from New Zealand to score a Premier League hat-trick.

Wood capped off a sensational performance when he turned provider with five minutes remaining, laying the ball off to Ashley Westwood to power in a fourth goal.

In ending a run of three straight defeats Burnley move up to 14th on 36 points, two places and five points below Wolves.

SUPER LEAGUE CLUBS MUST FACE CONSEQUENCES – UEFA PRESIDENT

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has insisted the 12 clubs who attempted to set up the breakaway European Super League will face sanctions for their actions.

Premier League clubs Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham announced their intention to establish a new midweek European competition to rival the Champions League last Sunday.

They were joined by six other founding clubs: LaLiga’s Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, and Serie A’s Juventus, AC Milan and Inter.

Several board members from the 12 clubs stepped down from their roles at the European Club Association (ECA), governed by UEFA, as the controversial plans started to make traction.

The competition drew widespread condemnation including from Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the Duke of Cambridge, and resulted in fan protests at Stamford Bridge before Chelsea’s 0-0 draw with Brighton on Tuesday before the idea started to unravel on the same evening.

As Chelsea fans gathered at the ground, reports circled the Blues were considering withdrawing from the competition before Premier League leaders Manchester City officially pulled out on Tuesday evening, shortly followed by the other English clubs.

Atletico Madrid and the two Milan clubs withdrew later, while Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona believe the European Super League still has legs.

However, Ceferin, who said he was “completely impressed” by the supporters’ reaction to the concept, admitted sanctions for the six English clubs would be the most lenient for leaving first, with Juve, Barca and Real set to be given strong punishment.

“Let’s see. Everyone has to take consequences for what they did and we cannot pretend nothing happened,” Ceferin told the Mail on Sunday. “You cannot do something like that and just say ‘I’ve been punished because everybody hates me’.

“They don’t have problems because of anyone else but themselves. It’s not OK what they did and we will see in next few days what we have to do.

“But for me it’s a clear difference between the English clubs and the other six. They pulled out first, they admitted they made a mistake. You have to have some greatness to say ‘I was wrong’.

“For me there are three groups of this 12 – the English six, who went out first, then the other three (Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, Inter) after them and then the ones who feel that Earth is flat and they think the Super League still exists. And there is a big difference between those. But everyone will be held responsible. In what way, we will see.

“I don’t want to say disciplinary process but it has to be clear that everyone has to be held responsible in a different way. Is it disciplinary? Is it the decision of the executive committee? We will see. It’s too early to say.”

MBAPPE DOUBLE GUIDES PSG TO 3-1 WIN OVER METZ

Kylian Mbappe scored either side of halftime but picked up a thigh injury as Paris St Germain returned to the top of Ligue 1 with a 3-1 victory over Metz at the Stade Saint-Symphorien on Saturday.

The France forward was substituted in the closing moments with a heavily strapped thigh, casting doubts on his fitness ahead of PSG’s Champions League semi-final first leg at home to Manchester City on Wednesday.

“We hope it’s not too serious,” PSG coach Mauricio Pochettino told reporters. “Kylian was calm when he was replaced but even a simple knock is always painful.”

PSG opened the scoring inside four minutes when Mbappe latched on to a floated pass from midfielder Ander Herrera, before smashing it past Metz goalkeeper Alexandre Oukidja.

Against the run of play, Metz scored their first goal in four league matches to equalise at the start of the second half as right back Fabien Centonze headed home a dipping cross by attacking midfielder Farid Boulaya.

PSG reclaimed the lead in the 58th minute when Mbappe capitalised on a misplaced Centonze pass, before scoring his 25th league goal of the season with a deflected effort from outside the box.

Mauro Icardi’s cheeky ‘Panenka’ penalty sealed the result with two minutes remaining as PSG moved two points clear of second-placed Lille, who have a game in hand against Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday.

The result rounded off a successful week for PSG as they remained on course for an historic treble of domestic league and cup and European Cup this season, having defeated Angers to reach the French Cup semi-finals in midweek.

“We are on the right track, there is still a month of competitive football to go, we are still in the cup, in the league and in the Champions League,” Pochettino added.

“We are battling to win all three; we want to accomplish what we want to do at the end of the season.”

SUPER LEAGUE: SERIE A CLUBS WANT AC MILAN, INTER, JUVENTUS PUNISHED

Eleven Serie A clubs have called for AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus to face consequences for their involvement in the failed European Super League project.

AS Roma, Torino, Bologna, Genoa, Sampdoria, Sassuolo, Spezia, Benevento, Crotone, Parma and Cagliari co-signed a letter addressed to league president Paolo Dal Pino, according to Italian news agency ANSA.

The letter calls for an urgent meeting of the 20 Serie A clubs to “analyse the serious acts implemented by Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan and their administrators, and the relative consequences”.

The three clubs are said to have “developed and approved the project by acting in secret” with “evident and serious damage” for Italian football.

“Furthermore, to date the same clubs have not yet formally communicated their withdrawal from the project, evidence of a possible and unacceptable relaunch of its creation,” the letter added.

The Super League project was announced on Sunday but fell apart within three days as most of the founding members pulled out amid a fierce backlash from fans, governing bodies and politicians.

TUCHEL HAPPY WITH TIMO WERNER’S PERFORMANCE AFTER WESTHAM VICTORY

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel heaped praise on Timo Werner after the forward netted the winning goal in the Premier League clash against West Ham United on Saturday.

The Blues were the dominant side in the London derby against the Hammers, and they scored the only goal of the game in the 43rd minute through Werner.

Ben Chilwell provided a perfect defence splitting cross in the box for the German, who had the simple job to convert from a few yards out.

Shortly after the interval, Werner should have doubled the club’s advantage, but somehow missed his target as his shot trickled wide of goal.

The Blues held on for a comfortable 1-0 triumph and following the game, Tuchel was pleased for Werner, but added that he needs to keep on scoring.

He told Chelseafc.com: “He needs to keep on scoring and catch the moment. He is quite often involved in our goals, even in the last weeks with fouls in the penalty area, or assists like against Man City. Nothing helps more than scoring goals.”

“I felt him very strong today from the start. He was very good at distributing the ball, dropping from the number nine position and keeping the ball for us. He had good timings in the deep runs behind the line. He was involved in many chances and half-chances.

“It was very nice he could score. He could have had a second one for sure, and after that he lost his confidence a bit and was a bit tired, but it was a good performance from him.”

Werner has had a mixed debut campaign with the Blues, but he has still registered 11 goals and 12 assists from 43 appearances in all competitions.

His goal against the Hammers was only his second in the league since the turn of the year. It ended his 12-match goal drought in all competitions.

It is clear that he is lacking confidence in front of goal at the moment, and he has been guilty of missing several clear-cut chances this term.

However, there have been positives as the German has been involved in creating chances for his teammates over the past few months.

The Blues’ win at the London Stadium sees them three points clear of West Ham United in the race for the final Champions League spot.

ZINEDINE ZIDANE INSISTS REAL MADRID STILL IN TITLE RACE AFTER GOALESS DRAW WITH BETIS

Zinedine Zidane insisted Real Madrid’s LaLiga title hopes were not over after a damaging goalless home draw with Real Betis.

Real are two points behind city neighbours Atletico with five games left to play.

Atletico have a game in hand, away to Athletic Bilbao on Sunday, while Barcelona – who have played two games fewer than Real – would draw level with them by winning at Villarreal.

“The league is five games to go, that’s still a lot,” Real boss Zidane said at his post-match press conference.

“We lost two points, but we’re going to keep fighting.

“Defensively we were good, but offensively we lacked a lot and were not very fine at the top.

“The league did not end today. The league remains, the others have to play.”

Real were without Ferland Mendy and Toni Kroos ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final first-leg tie with Chelsea.

But Belgium forward Eden Hazard made a cameo appearance in the final 15 minutes to mark his return from six weeks out injured.

“It has given good feelings,” Zidane said of Hazard’s return. “I am happy.

“He is one that is going to contribute, we are going to take advantage of that until the end of the season.

“The intention is that Mendy and Kroos return (for Chelsea), but we have to see.

“We have to recover as Tuesday is going to be the most difficult of the season.”

Betis midfielder Guido Rodriguez was satisfied with a fifth successive draw, which leaves the Andalusians in sixth place and clinging on to a Europa League spot.

“We’ve had quite a few draws not but these games are always very difficult,” Rodriguez told LaLiga TV.

“It’s important that we keep moving on and battling to finish in the Europa League places.

“They didn’t create any chances in the first half, the game opened up a bit more in the second half.

“We’ve had three games this week and the players have put in a lot of effort.”

WERNER STRIKE HELP STRENGTHEN CHELSEA’S GRIP ON FOURTH SPOT

Timo Werner scored the only goal as Chelsea beat West Ham United to create a three-point gap over their opponents in the race for fourth.

Chelsea created the better of the first-half chances, Werner skewing over after only four minutes and Mason Mount forcing Lukasz Fabianski into a save.

Their persistence paid off two minutes before the break, when Ben Chilwell squared for Werner to score his first league goal since 15 February.

Werner missed a fantastic chance to double the lead 10 minutes after half-time, shooting wide from close range after Fabianski had parried Mount’s effort.

West Ham pushed for an equaliser, their best chance falling to Jesse Lingard, whose shot dropped narrowly wide.

Their hopes of a point were hit by Fabian Balbuena’s red card for a high challenge on Chilwell, awarded after a VAR review.

Chelsea stay fourth with 58 points, a place above West Ham with five matches to play.

FSG REJECT 3 BILLION POUNDS TAKE OVER BID

Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group have turned down a takeover bid of £3bn for the club, according to reports.

The offer, understood to have come from the Middle East, was made to FSG prior to the announcement on Sunday night that principal owner John W. Henry had been involved in talks to take Liverpool into the ill-fated European Super League,

Despite lost revenue in excess of £100m at Anfield as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the offer to buy the club was rejected by the Liverpool owners.

The Mirror also claim that following anger aimed at FSG in the wake of the failed Super League plot there are other potential bidders waiting in the wings to see if the stance of Henry and Liverpool chairman Tom Werner changes as a result of the enormous criticism they face.

Liverpool fans, along with supporters of the other five Premier League clubs who had sought to form the new competition, made their feelings on FSG dragging the Reds into the conversation abundantly clear, with banners unfurled outside Anfield and protests from fans making it clear to the American owners that it was something they did not want.

FSG have had a strained relationship with Liverpool fans in recent months and have been criticised for putting money over success when it comes to spending in the transfer market, with the Reds forking out much less than their rivals.

FSG took charge of Liverpool in 2010, buying the club for around £300m to end the reign of the deeply unpopular Tom Hicks and George Gillett at Anfield, the American duo having left the Reds on a financial cliff edge by the time their exit arrived.

The Reds have been turned into a profitable business valued at £2bn most recently, and the hiring of Jurgen Klopp in 2015 has seen them claim silverware in the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020 – their first English league title in 30 years.

BAYERN’S BUNDESLIGA CELEBRATIONS ON HOLD AFTER LOSS TO MAINZ

Bayern Munich missed the chance to clinch the Bundesliga title when it lost at relegation-threatened Mainz 2-1 on Saturday.

First-half goals from Jonathan Burkardt and Robin Quaison put Bayern’s title celebrations on hold and lifted Mainz five points clear of the relegation zone after a remarkable turnaround in the second half of the season.

Robert Lewandowski returned from a month out with a knee injury to score for Bayern in the fourth minute of injury time and take his season tally to 36, but it was too late for the eight-time defending champions.

“We tried but in the end we didn’t deserve to take a point here,” Thomas Müller said.

Bayern could still win the title this weekend, depending on how second-placed Leipzig fares against Stuttgart on Sunday. A Leipzig defeat would hand Bayern the title with three games to spare, but anything else means the Bavarian powerhouse will have to wait. Bayern hosts Borussia Mönchengladbach next weekend in the next opportunity to win the league.

Mainz forward Burkardt opened the scoring in the third minute when Bayern captain Manuel Neuer was deceived by his centrally placed shot.

Neuer reacted well to deny Mainz a second goal minutes later, then again in the 16th, a minute after Lewandowski had Bayern’s first chance.

But Quaison headed Mainz’s second goal in the 37th when he beat Müller and David Alaba to meet Phillipp Mwene’s free kick.

Bayern coach Hansi Flick reacted with three changes at the break, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Jamal Musiala replacing the ineffective Leroy Sané and Kingsley Coman, and Tanguy Nianzou going on for Leon Goretzka, who was in danger of a second booking.

Bayern came back from 2-0 down to win the reverse fixture 5-2 in Munich on Jan. 3, but Mainz is a different prospect since Bo Svensson took over as coach the following day. Mainz is unbeaten in seven games with five wins in that run.
