TOTTENHAM BEAT MANCHESTER CITY WITH LONE GOAL FROM HEUNG-MIN SON

Nuno Espirito Santo started his tenure as Tottenham Hotspur manager with a 1-0 win over 2020-21 Premier League champions Manchester City on Sunday.

Harry Kane, who has been linked with a move to City, wasn’t in the squad for the match.

Son Heung-Min scored the game’s only goal in the second half after a strong counter-attack from Tottenham.

The goal came against the run of play with City dominating possession and shots.

Spurs broke with the ball after Hugo Lloris had saved a City attempt. Steven Bergwijn found Son who had raced down the pitch. He slotted the ball past Ederson who didn’t have time to dive to save it.

England captain Kane only returned to training with Spurs on Friday after an extended break following Euro 2020.

HARRY KANE NOT IN TOTTENHAM SQUAD FOR OPENING GAME AGAINST MANCHESTER CITY

Harry Kane was not involved in Tottenham’s Premier League opener against Manchester City.

The England captain, who wants to join City this summer, only had two training sessions with the first team following his late return from holiday.

And it was decided he was not fit enough to even take a place on the bench and did not travel to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tanguy Ndombele was also left out for Spurs, who named an unchanged side from the one that started the final friendly against Arsenal last week.

Jack Grealish made his full debut for City following his £100million move from Aston Villa, while Kevin De Bruyne was named on the bench.

HARRY KANE ABSENT AGAIN FROM TOTTENHAM PRE-SEASON TRAINING

Tottenham striker Harry Kane again failed to report for pre-season training on Tuesday.

The wantaway England captain was due back at Hotspur Way on Monday morning for Covid-19 and pre-season testing after his three-week break but did not show.

He was again absent 24 hours later, but is said to be planning on returning later in the week.

Spurs are choosing not to comment, but are understood to be aware of the star striker’s plans.

But they remain unimpressed by their player’s actions and could consider issuing a heavy fine.

Kane believes the action was necessary to try and force a move to Manchester City, who are keen to sign him.

But with three years left on his contract, Spurs have no intention of selling their prized asset and his actions are likely to irk chairman Daniel Levy.

Kane hinted at the end of last term that he would like to join City, but the Premier League champions have previously indicated they would not pay the sort of £150 million fee required to even tempt Spurs to the negotiating table.

Even then it is unlikely that Spurs would want to strengthen a Premier League rival.

The striker has been in the Bahamas following England’s run to the Euro 2020 final and looks to have set his stall out to force a move from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

New boss Nuno Espirito Santo, who was assured Kane would not be sold during discussions for the job, said last month that Kane could be “counted on” for the upcoming season.

Levy is determined to keep his star man and previously said that he would do whatever is best for the club.

Kane’s protest makes it highly unlikely that he will feature in Tottenham’s Premier League opener against — of all clubs — City on August 15th.

SPURS TO FINE HARRY KANE AFTER STRIKER FAILS TO REPORT FOR PRE-SEASON COVID TESTS

Tottenham are likely to fine striker Harry Kane after he failed to report for pre-season tests on Monday morning.

The England captain was due back at the club’s Hotspur Way training centre for a Covid test following his three-week break after the European Championship.

However, Kane did not arrive as planned, throwing his future further up into the air.

Spurs are now considering disciplining their vice-captain, the PA news agency understands.

The 28-year-old is keen to leave the club this summer in order to win trophies, but, with three years left on his contract, Spurs have no intention of selling their prized asset.

HARRY KANE BOYCOTTS SPURS ROUTINE TEST, PUSHING FOR CITY MOVE

Tottenham striker Harry Kane did not report for pre-season tests on Monday morning.

The England captain was due back at the club’s Hotspur Way training centre for a Covid-19 test following his three-week break after the European Championship.

However, the PA news agency understands Kane did not arrive as planned, throwing his future further up into the air.

HARRY KANE SCORES BRACE, AS ENGLAND THRASH UKRAINE 4-0 TO SAIL INTO EURO SEMI-FINALS

Harry Kane struck twice as England thrashed Ukraine 4-0 on Saturday to reach their first European Championship semifinal since 1996 and set up a clash with Denmark.

The England captain raced onto a Raheem Sterling through ball to fire in the opener from close range after four minutes at the Stadio Olimpico, England’s earliest goal in a Euros match since 2004.

Harry Maguire headed home a second less than a minute into the second half and Kane soon nodded in his side’s third as Ukraine’s resistance crumbled.

Substitute Jordan Henderson completed the rout with his first international goal to ensure England’s comfortable passage into the last four.

Gareth Southgate’s side will face Denmark at Wembley on Wednesday for a place in the final after the Danes defeated the Czech Republic 2-1 in Baku.

Fans had barely settled in their seats by the time England took the lead with a well-worked move.

Sterling cut in off the left wing and slid a through ball into a pocket of space behind the defence for Kane to race through and guide into the net with a neat finish.

Ukraine mustered their first effort when Kyle Walker gave the ball away in midfield and Roman Yaremchuk raced through to draw a good save by Jordan Pickford from a tight angle, while England’s Declan Rice and Jadon Sancho had shots beaten away by Georgiy Bushchan before halftime.

But England flexed their muscles after the break and ended the game as a contest within five minutes of the restart, helped by two fine assists from Luke Shaw.

The left-back whipped a free-kick onto Maguire’s head for a close-range finish in the first minute of the second half before steering a perfect delivery towards Kane for a simple close-range header four minutes later.

The goal sent Kane level with Alan Shearer as England’s second-top scorer at major tournaments with nine goals, behind Gary Lineker on 10, and he was denied a hat-trick when his ferocious volley was palmed away by the diving Bushchan.

England made it four from the resulting corner when Ukraine again failed to deal with a set-piece delivery as Henderson nodded in from six yards to score his first goal for his country on his 62nd cap.

“There was a lot of pressure on us as we were favourites to win this game. To perform like we did tonight, a clean sheet, four goals, it was the perfect night,” Kane said.

Maguire was proud of England’s accomplishment but wasn’t satisfied.

“It’s a great feeling — back-to-back semifinals at a major tournament is a great achievement. I don’t want to be a party pooper but we don’t stop here. We’ve got another big game coming up and we want to go further this time,” Maguire said.

“We had good parts of the game, but set pieces did not work very well for us today,” said Ukraine coach Andriy Shevchenko. “I am really happy with how the team performed. I want to thank the players for their attitude today.”

KANE, STERLING ON TARGET AS ENGLAND ELIMINATE GERMANY FROM EURO 2020

England beat Germany 2-0 at Wembley on Tuesday to reach the Euro 2020 quarterfinals thanks to second-half goals from Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane.

Both sides came into this match with question marks over them after unconvincing group stage performances with England scoring just twice despite topping the group while Germany needed a late goal against Hungary to seal their progress.

It was a game of few chances, though Jordan Pickford made an impressive save to deny Kai Havertz just after the interval, while Germany defender Mats Hummels produced an impressive goal line tackle to deny Kane just before half-time.

After a quiet first half, Luke Shaw grew into the game and provided an assist for both of the England’s opener, while Jack Grealish once again started on the bench, but was introduced on 69 minutes in place in place of Bukayo Saka and also set up a goal.

The breakthrough came on 75 minutes as Shaw played a ball across goal for Sterling to tap home from close range following good work from Grealish.

The Manchester City forward had also scored England’s winners in their 1-0 Group D victories over Croatia and Czech Republic.

Thomas Muller then had a glorious chance to equalise for Germany after Sterling had given the ball away, but somehow put his effort wide when he was clean through.

Shaw and Grealish combined again for the second goal with Aston Villa man providing the assist on this occasion.

Kane, who appeared to pick up an injury midway through the second half but carried on playing, sealed the victory with his first goal of the tournament on 86 minutes as he finished off a Grealish cross with a header from close range.

“We knew we needed a big performance against a difficult side, and we did that today,” Sterling said after the match. “Doing it for your country is always special.

“For half a second I thought let it [Sterling’s goal] not be offside, but I’m so happy it went in. We knew the intensity we could play at, not a lot of teams can deal with it.

“We kept going, [Declan] Rice and [Kalvin] Phillips, ate up ground and were animals in there. All-round, great team performance. We take it game by game, we go away, recover and get focused onto the next one.”

This was only England’s second-ever knockout win at a European Championship and they will face Sweden or Ukraine in the quarterfinals.

A clean sheet ensure England are the only remaining side in the Euros yet to have conceded a goal.

HARRY KANE BEATS MO SALAH TO PREMIER LEAGUE GOLDEN BOOT, WINS PLAY MAKER OF THE SEASON

Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane has won the 2020-21 Premier League Golden Boot after scoring 23 goals over the course of the season.

Kane, who according to ESPN sources has told Spurs he wants to leave this summer, beat Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah to the prize. The Egypt international finished the season with 22 goals.

Both players had gone into the final day level on 22, but Kane scored in Tottenham’s 4-2 win with Leicester City, while Salah drew a blank in Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace.

This is Kane’s third Golden Boot award after winning it in back-to-back seasons in 2015-16 and 2016-17.

He has scored 221 goals in 336 games for Spurs across all competitions and is on track to beat Alan Shearer’s Premier League record of 260 goals. Kane, 27, has 166.

Sunday’s game against Leicester possibly marked Kane’s last in a Tottenham shirt as he has requested a move away from Spurs.

Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City are all reportedly interested in the 27-year-old.

However, he still has three years left on his contract with the north London side and chairman Daniel Levy is said to be reluctant to let his star forward leave.

Should the move be sanctioned, though, Spurs are thought to want around £150 million for him.

HARRY KANE DECLARES INTENTION TO LEAVE TOTTENHAM

Harry Kane has told Tottenham he wants to leave the club this summer, sources say.

Sources said the England captain expressed his desire to move on during a face-to-face meeting with chairman Daniel Levy, and he would prefer to remain in the Premier League.

Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea have all lodged interest with Kane’s representatives, but it remains to be seen whether any club will offer the £150 million it will likely take to convince Spurs to sell.

Kane had repeatedly dropped hints about his frustration over a lack of silverware despite becoming one of the Premier League’s most prolific strikers, scoring 165 goals in 243 appearances to sit seventh on the all-time list.

However, he has yet to win a trophy with Tottenham or England. The club’s most recent setback came last month when Spurs lost the Carabao Cup Final to City 1-0 at Wembley.

Head coach Jose Mourinho was sacked six days before that game after a disappointing campaign in which they will miss out on Champions League qualification barring a mathematical miracle in the final week.

Despite this, Kane’s individual performances have remained strong. With 22 goals and 13 assists, only Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski (40) and Lionel Messi (39) have more goal involvements in Europe’s top five leagues in this season.

Kane has not handed in a transfer request and, significantly, he has three years remaining on his current £200,000-a-week contract.

Spurs are therefore in a strong negotiating position should Levy sanction his departure, but the chairman remains reluctant to lose the club’s prized asset, even for what would be one of the biggest transfer fees in history.

Sources said Kane is hopeful the situation can be resolved before the start of Euro 2020 on June 11, however, and that confidence could be based on unconfirmed reports suggesting he was keen to move on last summer but was convinced by Levy to give the club one more year in return for a softer stance at the end of this season should he still want to find a new club.

If Spurs are to grant their captain’s wish, they would prefer he go to a club abroad rather than strengthen a domestic rival, but Kane’s main suitors are all likely to be English.

Chelsea are in the market for a striker and would not be put off by the price tag given they hold an active interest in Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland, whose contract would command a similar fee.

Levy has a difficult relationship with Chelsea arising from previous transfers, however, which might therefore hand an advantage to United or City.

Fans have protested at the owners, ENIC, and Levy’s handling of the club in the wake of their involvement in the failed Super League project, and about 10,000 supporters will be able to attend their final home game against Aston Villa on Wednesday once coronavirus restrictions are lifted.

HARRY KANE SCORES BRACE, LIMPS OFF INJURED IN EVERTON DRAW

Harry Kane showcased exactly why Tottenham are so desperate to keep him as he scored twice in a 2-2 draw at Everton, but an apparent ankle knock sustained in stoppage time will give Spurs serious cause for concern.

Tottenham insist their star man is not for sale at any price despite constant speculation surrounding his future, and it is easy to see why after he scored two clinical goals at Goodison Park.

He opened the scoring in the 27th minute after a defensive error and then, following a Gylfi Sigurdsson double either side of half-time put Everton in front, the England captain earned a point 20 minutes from time.

In doing so he moved two goals in front of Mohamed Salah at the top of the Premier League goalscoring charts, taking his tally to 21 for the season before limping off injured late on.

As he has done so often, he again carried Spurs on what was an overall disappointing showing and their top-four hopes suffered a possible terminal blow, sitting five points behind West Ham having played a game more, as the pressure increases on a forlorn Jose Mourinho.

Everton are a point behind, so this result does not help them much and they will rue squandering the lead and then missing key chances in the second half.

It appeared February’s nine-goal FA Cup thriller had used up all the fun for this fixture as it was a drab opening 25 minutes, where Richarlison’s shot which Hugo Lloris comfortably saved was the only moment that passed as entertainment.

But the game burst into life with two goals in four minutes.

Spurs took the lead with their first foray into Everton’s box as Kane was clinical. Mason Holgate missed Tanguy Ndombele’s cross and Kane controlled and fired into the bottom corner.

Mourinho’s men let another advantage slip thanks to a quickfire response from the hosts.

Sergio Reguilon clattered into the back of James Rodriguez, with Michael Oliver immediately pointing to the spot even though replays suggested Rodriguez kicked the floor and contact was minimal.

Sigurdsson made no mistake from the spot, sending Lloris the wrong way.

Everton gained momentum from their leveller and should have gone in front before half-time.

A brilliant move saw Richarlison play in Rodriguez, but the Colombian’s snapshot was brilliantly saved by Lloris, who also kept out a Richarlison header before the break.

It did not take much for Spurs to improve after half-time and they fashioned good chances in the opening 15 minutes of the second half.

First, Son Heung-min ghosted into the area and shot straight at Jordan Pickford when Kane was begging for a pull-back and, after more great work by Kane to open up play, Ndombele’s effort was deflected over the crossbar.

From the resulting corner, Toby Alderweireld came closest to regaining Spurs’ lead, but his header hit the near post.

But it was Everton who moved in front just after the hour mark with a fine goal.

They again cut Spurs open, working the ball out to Seamus Coleman, who pulled back to Sigurdsson to fire home a brilliant first-time finish into the far corner.

However, they were masters of their own downfall as they allowed Spurs to hit back just six minutes later.

Michael Keane and Holgate collided with each other when trying to clear a cross and the ball fell to the one man they did not want it to and Kane made them pay, lashing home in style from 10 yards out.

Kane almost scored a hat-trick minutes later but his header from Lucas Moura’s cross clipped the outside of the post.

It was Everton who were left with their heads in their hands at the end as they squandered a great chance to win it when Lloris denied Josh King and then Richarlison blazed over an open goal from the rebound.
