Bayern will not replicate poor first-leg display against Villarreal

Julian Nagelsmann has promised that Bayern Munich “will not play badly against the same opponent twice” ahead of his side’s Champions League clash with Villarreal.

Bayern welcome Villarreal to the Allianz Arena trailing 1-0 from last week’s first leg.

The Bundesliga leaders are looking to avoid being eliminated in the quarter-finals in consecutive seasons. Prior to last term, when they lost to Paris Saint-Germain in the last eight, Bayern had only been eliminated in one of their last nine quarter-final ties in the competition, against Real Madrid in 2016-17.

Villarreal coach Unai Emery said after the first leg that he regretted his side not being able to make the most of further opportunities to extend their advantage.

It was the first time Bayern have failed to score in a Champions League since Liverpool in February 2019, and Nagelsmann insisted the poor display will not be replicated on Tuesday.

“We played a bad game and they played their best game,” Nagelsmann told a news conference.

“This will not happen again, to play badly against the same opponent twice.

“We delivered in the past and it should be like that. We have to, we must, we want to. It is normal when you win so many titles and have such success for so many years that you maybe need this pressure sometimes to get the maximum out.

“Maybe it will be a sparkling game from our side. We must turn up our complete intensity level. We did not take the last steps, the last metres in the first leg. We have to play more uncomfortable football.”

Bayern actually finished the first leg with a higher expected goals (xG) of 1.6 in comparison to Villarreal’s 1.5, though that will have been helped by a higher quantity of attempts (22 to 12).

Nagelsmann added: “We made many mistakes. They made one to keep us alive. They could have scored more goals but we are still alive and we should show it on the pitch.”

Bayern are aiming to progress from a Champions League knockout tie after losing the first leg for the first time since the 2014-15 quarter-finals, while the defeat was their 20th against a Spanish team in European competition, their most against sides from a specific nation.

Julian Nagelsmann lauds ‘outstanding’ Gnabry after five-star display at Stuttgart

Julian Nagelsmann hailed the “outstanding” Serge Gnabry after he scored a hat-trick in Bayern Munich’s 5-0 thrashing of Stuttgart.

Gnabry marked his first start for almost a month with a superb display, helping himself to a treble and laying on the other two goals for Robert Lewandowski in the city where he was born.

The Germany forward gave Bayern a 1-0 half-time lead and they ran riot after the break, scoring three times in the space of five minutes behind closed doors at Mercedes-Benz Arena on Tuesday.

Gnabry was directly involved in five goals in a competitive match for only the second time in his career, with the only previous instance coming in the 7-2 win at Tottenham in October 2019 – when he scored four and provided one assist

Victory in Julian Nagelsmann’s 200th Bundesliga match as a head coach put the champions nine points clear at the top of the table.

Nagelsmann lauded Gnabry, who has had to bide his time to force his way back into the team after a spell in quarantine and has also been hampered by an injury.

The Bayern head coach said: “He is an outstanding player who is currently struggling with his back and therefore maybe gets a tad less minutes than he deserves.

“He did very, very well today.”

It was another devastating performance from the Bavarian giants, but there was concern when they lost Kingsley Coman to an injury in the first half

Nagelsmann said of the France winger: “We don’t have an exact diagnosis for him yet. It’s a muscular issue. We’re hoping that it’s nothing serious.”

Lewandowski’s double took him level with the great Gerd Muller on a record 41 goals in a calendar year in the German top flight.

BAYERN MUNICH BOSS, JULIAN NAGELSMANN TESTS POSITIVE FOR COVID-19 IN PORTUGAL

Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann has tested positive for Coronavirus in Portugal after missing his side’s win over Benfica in the Champions League due to ‘flu-like symptoms’.

Nagelsmann, who is double-vaccinated, has to travel back to Germany separately with an ambulance pilot before going into isolation.

A club statement on Thursday morning read: ‘Julian Nagelsmann , 34, head coach of FC Bayern Munich, tested positive for the corona virus despite being completely vaccinated.

‘He will return to Munich separately from the team with an ambulance pilot and will go into domestic isolation there.’
Nagelsmann wasn’t on the bench for the match on Wednesday evening and instead stayed in the hotel due to his illness.

‘Unfortunately, Julian Nagelsmann cannot sit on the bench today due to a flu-like infection,’ Bayern said on the club’s official Twitter account before the match.

‘He is represented by his co-trainers, Dino Toppmoller and Xaver Zembrod. Have a good recovery Julian!’

Bayern ran out 4-0 winners against Benfica thanks to a late rally with Leroy Sane scoring twice alongside a Robert Lewandowski strike and an Everton Soares own goal.

But there will now be concerns as to whether any other members of the side will test positive before Saturday’s clash with Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga.

Bayern currently lead the standings in Germany but are only a point ahead of second-place Borussia Dortmund.

BAYERN MUNICH CONFIRM APPOINTMENT OF SPURS TARGET JULIAN NAGELSMANN AS NEW MANAGER

Bayern Munich have announced the appointment of 33-year-old Julian Nagelsmann as their new head coach on a five-year contract.

RB Leipzig boss Nagelsmann had been considered as a target for Tottenham Hotspur following last week’s sacking of Jose Mourinho, but the former Hoffenheim coach has opted to stay in Germany and move to the record 30-times Bundesliga title winners.

Bayern boss Hansi Flick, who won the Champions League last season, had asked to be released from his contract, and is expected to take over from Joachim Low as the new Germany boss after this summer’s European Championships.

Bayern said in a statement: “FC Bayern have appointed Julian Nagelsmann as their new head coach.

“The Bavarian-born 33-year-old will move to Munich from RB Leipzig on 1 July 2021 ahead of the new season, signing a five-year-contract with the German record champions until 30 June 2026.

“This comes after FC Bayern agreed to current head coach Hansi Flick’s request to have his contract terminated on 30 June 2021, two years earlier than its original expiry date.”

Nagelsmann had coached Leipzig for the past two seasons, and challenged Bayern in this season’s title race before the Bavarians pulled away at the top.

Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff said “After there had been a lot of movement over the past few days regarding the coaching position at FC Bayern Munich for the new season, Julian Nagelsmann approached us and told us in open discussions that it was a lifelong dream for him, FC Bayern coach and he would like to move to Munich if the opportunity arises after the end of this season.

“Julian took a fantastic path in Leipzig and developed our club very successfully. Not only did he make our players better, but he also took the team to the next level as a collective.”

BLOW FOR SPURS AS MUNICH OPEN TALKS WITH NAGELSMANN

Tottenham have been dealt a blow in their hunt for a new manager, with the Independent reporting Bayern Munich have opened talks to hire RB Leipzig’s Julian Nagelsmann.

Spurs bosses had been said to have earmarked the 33-year-old as an ideal replacement for Jose Mourinho, but they may now need to turn their attention elsewhere.

Their solution may actually be closer to home, with Leicester’s Brendan Rodgers also being linked with the role.

The Daily Star, citing 90min, says Rodgers is high on Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy’s radar, but Leicester are believed to be willing to match or better any potential offer in order to keep the Northern Irishman at the King Power Stadium.
