EPL: ARSENAL SECURE NINTH SPOT AFTER COME BACK WIN AT LEICESTER

David Luiz, Alexandre Lacazette and Nicolas Pepe were on target as Arsenal came from a goal down to beat Leicester City 3-1 at King Power Stadium.

Youri Tielemans put Leicester ahead on six minutes when he surged forward and fired past Bernd Leno into the far corner.

Arsenal levelled on 39 minutes when David Luiz headed in Willian’s well-worked free-kick.

The visitors took the lead on the stroke of half-time through Lacazette’s penalty, awarded after Wilfred Ndidi’s handball.

Leicester lost Harvey Barnes to injury six minutes into the second half and later lost Jonny Evans too.

The Gunners sealed their win on 52 minutes when Pepe tapped into an empty net from Willan’s cutback.

Arsenal rise to ninth with 37 points, one ahead of Tottenham Hotspur, who host Burnley on Sunday.

Leicester miss the chance to move up to second place. They are on 49 points, behind Manchester United on goal difference.

MADDISON, BARNES ON TARGET AS LEICESTER BEAT ASTON VILLA TO CLIMB UP TO SECOND

First-half goals from James Maddison and Harvey Barnes helped Leicester City move to within seven points of leaders Manchester City with a 2-1 win at Aston Villa.

Leicester took the lead on 19 minutes when Barnes teed up Maddison on the edge of the penalty area and his sweeping low finish was beyond the reach of goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

Barnes added a second only four minutes later, lashing the ball into the roof of the net after Martinez spilled Jamie Vardy’s shot into his path.

Bertrand Traore gave Villa hope of a second-half comeback with a close-range finish from Matt Targett’s cross on 48 minutes.

Morgan Sanson went close to conjuring an equaliser for Villa with seven minutes remaining but he fired narrowly wide from distance.

Leicester’s third victory in four matches takes them up to second, one place and three points clear of Manchester United, who face Newcastle United on Sunday.

Villa stay in eighth place, level with Tottenham Hotspur on 36 points but ahead of them on goal difference.

ALISSON, LIVERPOOL MISERY CONTINUES AS LIVERPOOL LOSE AT LEICESTER.

Alisson suffered another nightmare as Liverpool’s title defence was left hanging by a thread after a late collapse at Leicester.

The goalkeeper gifted Jamie Vardy a game-changing goal as the Foxes scored three times inside a dramatic final 14 minutes to clinch a 3-1 win.

Alisson, fresh from two huge gaffes against Manchester City, aided Liverpool’s late capitulation when he came and missed Youri Tielemans’ long pass and Vardy ran the ball in.

James Maddison had already levelled before Harvey Barnes struck to compound the visitors’ misery.

Mo Salah had given them a second-half lead but Jurgen Klopp’s side are 10 points behind leaders Manchester City – having played two games more – after a third straight defeat.

Vardy also missed two excellent chances when he headed at Alisson and hit the bar in the first half.

It was a stunning turnaround and the Foxes moved into second, six points ahead of Liverpool.

Klopp would have never envisaged such a collapse after a bright start, despite Maddison trying to lob Alisson from inside his own half.

Jordan Henderson’s raking 50-yard pass sent Salah clear of Ricardo Pereira yet the forward failed to get the ball under control as he burst into the area

Vardy lifted the ball over from an angle after Barnes picked him out and Liverpool’s injury worries continued when James Milner was forced off after just 17 minutes, Thiago replacing him.

It failed to dent the visitors’ momentum, though, and they continued to probe with Salah giving Pereira a difficult half.

The Egypt international skipped away and his cross was turned wide by Sadio Mane before Kasper Schmeichel produced a world-class save to deny Roberto Firmino’s header – although Henderson was flagged offside in the build up.

Leicester’s sloppiness with the ball aided their top-four rivals but they should have opened the scoring nine minutes before the break.

Barnes picked out Vardy in the area but, unmarked seven yards out, he headed straight at Alisson.

It was a chance the former England striker would usually take and he missed another golden one soon after.

Debutant Ozan Kabak’s slip allowed Maddison’s impudent flick to send the striker clear but his rising drive hit the bar.

For all their possession, Liverpool could have gone into the break two goals down but started the second half as they did the first, pinning the Foxes back.

Klopp’s side struggled to create clear openings but did come close after 57 minutes.

Pereira brought down Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold’s 30-yard free kick clipped Vardy in the wall and bounced off the bar.

Leicester’s resolve looked like holding firm, with the returning Wilfred Ndidi quietly efficient, but Liverpool finally broke through after 67 minutes.

Alexander-Arnold found Firmino in the area and his cute turn teed up Salah to curl into the corner from 15 yards.

Liverpool looked on course for victory but collapsed in a frantic final 14 minutes.

First Leicester thought they had a penalty after Thiago brought down Barnes, only for VAR to rule the foul came outside the box.

It mattered little though as Maddison’s low free kick flashed straight in – although it was only given after a VAR check with Daniel Amartey ruled fractionally onside.

Three minutes later Alisson rushed out to Tielemans’ pass but clattered into Kabak instead to leave Vardy with a simple finish.

It got worse for the visitors with five minutes left when Barnes broke free on the left and fired past Alisson.

FA CUP ROUND UP: EVERTON SEE OF TOTTENHAM IN NINE GOAL THRILLER, LEICESTER, CITY, SHEFFIELD PROGRESS

Bernard’s extra-time strike saw Everton reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup after a thrilling nine-goal encounter against Tottenham.

The Toffees are in the hat for the sixth round as they got the better of Jose Mourinho’s Spurs – eventually progressing 5-4 after extra-time.

England captain Harry Kane was named on the bench for the visitors at Goodison Park but came on to head Tottenham level and take the game into an additional half an hour.

Earlier, a rare Davinson Sanchez goal had put Spurs in front only for Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison to strike inside three minutes to turn the tables.

Everton would go two goals ahead as Gylfi Sigurdsson converted a penalty against his former club after Calvert-Lewin had been fouled by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, only for Erik Lamela to reduce the arrears in first-half stoppage time.

There was plenty of drama still to come as Richarlison’s second of the night restored a two-goal margin, with Sanchez and Kane then heading home to level at 4-4.

Bernard was on hand to settle the contest with a fine finish in the first period of extra-time – Tottenham unable to fight back and slipping to defeat.

Manchester City advanced into the last eight with victory at Swansea – Pep Guardiola’s side entering the record books as they did so.

The 3-1 victory in south Wales means City have set a new record for the number of successive domestic wins by a top-flight club in England.

That run of wins extended to 15 courtesy of goals from Kyle Walker, Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus as Swansea debutant Morgan Whittaker pulled back a late consolation.

Kelechi Iheanacho’s last-gasp winner saw Leicester progress at the expense of Brighton.

In a game of few chances, both sides saw second-half strikes ruled out for offside only for Iheanacho to head home a quickly-taken corner in the dying stages to secure a 1-0 victory for the Foxes.

Sheffield United made the quarter-finals for the second successive season as Billy Sharp’s penalty was enough to see off 10-man Bristol City.

Referee Robert Jones dismissed Alfie Mawson after viewing replays on the pitchside monitor, with the defender blocking a David McGoldrick effort with his hand.

Sharp tucked away the resulting spot-kick to give the Blades a 1-0 win over their Sky Bet Championship visitors.

LEICESTER HELD TO GOALESS DRAW BY WOLVES

Leicester were held to a scrappy stalemate at Wolves as the Foxes missed the chance to apply some serious pressure at the top of the Premier League.

Brendan Rodgers’ side would have gone level with Manchester United in second with victory but were forced to settle for a 0-0 draw at Molineux.

Wolves started brightly, with Ruben Neves firing over on 11 minutes before Adama Traore, who caused problems with his pace and skill throughout, had a shot deflected wide by James Justin.

Leicester finished the first half on the front foot, as a neat one-two between Harvey Barnes and Kelechi Iheanacho set up James Maddison, but Jonny twice made important blocks in quick succession.

Two substitutes had great chances to earn victory. Firstly, Wolves’ Fabio Silva had a close-range shot brilliantly saved by Kasper Schmeichel.

Then Jamie Vardy came off the bench on his return from injury and headed wide in stoppage time.

Leicester remain in third place on 43 points, two behind Man Utd, while Wolves stay in 14th with 27 points.

IHEANACHO SCORES AS LEICESTER EDGE FULHAM AT CRAVEN COTTAGE.

Leicester City moved ahead of champions Liverpool in the Premier League table with a 2-0 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Kelechi Iheanacho headed in James Maddison’s pinpoint cross to give Leicester the lead after 17 minutes.

Kasper Schmeichel then tipped Tosin Adarabioyo’s powerful header over the bar to deny Fulham an equaliser before James Justin doubled the Foxes’ lead shortly before half-time.

The defender rounded Alphonse Areola before tucking in from close range for his second goal of the season.

Substitute Ivan Cavaleiro fired narrowly wide shortly after the restart and Bobby De Cordova-Reid’s effort found the side-netting as Fulham tried in vain to mount a comeback.

The result moves Leicester into third, two points ahead of Liverpool, who lost 1-0 at home against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Fulham stay 18th, seven points from safety, with 17 matches to play.

JAMES RODRIGUEZ SCORES STUNNER AS EVERTON DRAW AGAINST LEICESTER

Everton playmaker James Rodriguez’s moment of quality was cancelled out by an error from goalkeeper Jordan Pickford which allowed Leicester to leave Goodison Park with a 1-1 draw.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side had soaked up a huge amount of pressure following the Colombia international’s brilliant 30th-minute opener but a defence which had conceded only three goals in six matches were just about hanging on.

However, they were undone when the England number one, watched by Gareth Southgate, failed to keep out Youri Tielemans’ low shot.

Pickford may argue he saw the ball late as it came through a crowd of players but he got both hands to it but only pushed it in via a post.

It was the least Leicester deserved after the interval in particular as the hosts struggled to get out of their own half, dropping deeper and inviting pressure on themselves.

Ancelotti’s flexible formation had begun the game switching from 4-2-3-1 in possession to 4-4-2 without the ball but for much of the second half they resorted to a back-five in order to cope with the incessant waves of attacks.

The sight of Rodriguez, whose class on the ball had produced a superb opener with a rapier-like shot off the post, launching himself into the air to block a James Maddison cross highlighted just how much pressure Everton were under.

Ancelotti had said the next four days, with Newcastle to come at home this weekend, would have a huge bearing on the rest of their season in terms of whether they can challenge for the top four.

On this evidence they will have to be more progressive – they finished the match with just 35 per cent possession – if they are to fulfil their manager’s Champions League dream even with two matches in hand over most of their rivals.

Leicester, however, remain in the mix as they maintained third place but they will be frustrated they could not consolidate their position.

Even without the injured Jamie Vardy their pressing game had put the home side on the back foot from the start but they failed to create a genuine chance despite Harvey Barnes causing problems cutting in from the left.

It was something of a surprise to see Everton take the lead in those circumstances but there was little surprise in the goalscorer.

Andre Gomes’ raking crossfield diagonal was touched into the path of Rodriguez by Lucas Digne, playing further forward than normal on the left, and the Colombian’s left-footed shot was blocked by Wesley Fofana.

The Leicester defender could not keep control and allowed it to run back to the former Real Madrid playmaker who, with the Foxes’ defence slow to close him down, curled in his first goal since October off the upright.

It was his 19th career goal from outside the penalty area in Europe’s top five leagues but the first with his right foot.

The loss of Wilfred Ndidi just before half-time, replaced by Nampalys Mendy, interrupted Leicester’s rhythm but they quickly recovered it after the break.

A clever move from a short corner saw Barnes find space in the penalty area and his shot was parried by Pickford, who was rested for the weekend’s FA Cup win over Sheffield Wednesday, with James Justin placing the follow-up wide from the edge of the area.

Pressure continued to build and it was Pickford who finally cracked when he failed to deal with Tielemans’ low shot through a forest of legs.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s one big chance, having been starved of service, came in the 90th minute but he headed Digne’s cross wide.

BRENDAN RODGERS CONFIRMS JAMIE VARDY INJURY BLOW FOR LEICESTER.

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that Jamie Vardy will undergo surgery to fix a hernia injury. The Foxes are flying high in the Premier League having won their last three games and they currently sit third in the Premier League, two points behind leaders Manchester United.

Vardy, meanwhile, has scored 11 goals in the Premier League this season but the 34-year-old has found the back of the net only once in his last seven appearances. And Rodgers has now confirmed that the striker will be sidelined for Leicester’s upcoming run of games due to a hernia problem which has required surgery to fix.

Jamie Vardy will be out for a few weeks,’ said Rodgers.

As you know, we’ve been managing him over this last number of months, and he’s been absolutely fantastic.

We have a window now that allows him to have a minor operation on his hernia and then he’ll be back within a few weeks. He’ll be out for that period. ‘It’s one that doesn’t keep him out for too long, but it’s just a repair in and round that hernia area.

It’s one we feel he can’t really put it off much longer. ‘We were hoping to do it a few weeks back, but this is window where we can get it done and that will obviously leave him with a good part of the season where he can be really influential for us.’

LEICESTER GO TOP OF THE PREMIER LEAGUE AFTER BEATING CHELSEA 2-0.

First-half goals by Wilfred Ndidi and James Maddison powered Leicester City to the top of the Premier League in Brendan Rodgers’ first career win against Chelsea.

Ndidi fired the Foxes ahead from the edge of the penalty area on six minutes following a well-worked corner.

Jamie Vardy’s scooped effort was then kept out on 34 minutes thanks to a touch from Blues goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

On 38 minutes, Chelsea were awarded a penalty after Jonny Evans fouled Christian Pulisic, but a VAR review showed the offence had taken place just outside the area.

Mason Mount fired the resulting free-kick over the crossbar and seconds later, a defensive mix-up at the other end allowed Maddison to make it 2-0.

James Justin sent a free header wide and Youri Tielemans had a shot well saved by Mendy on 57 minutes as the dominant hosts threatened a third.

They closed out an assured 2-0 win after Timo Werner’s late effort that was disallowed for offside.

With 19 matches played, Leicester are top with 38 points, one ahead of Manchester United, who have played a match fewer and face Fulham on Wednesday.

Chelsea lie eighth on 29 points.

MADDISON, BARNES SCORE AS LEICESTER’S WIN AGAINST SAINTS TAKES THEM SECOND ON THE LOG.

Goals in each half from James Maddison and Harvey Barnes earned Leicester City a 2-0 win over Southampton at King Power Stadium.

Maddison fired the Foxes ahead on 37 minutes when he collected a pass from Youri Tielemans, and finished emphatically into the roof of the net from a tight angle.

Leicester were twice indebted to goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, who, on his 400th appearance for the club, superbly denied Che Adams and Ryan Bertrand.

Stuart Armstrong struck the crossbar as Southampton pressed for an equaliser, while at the other end, Jan Bednarek cleared Barnes’ shot off the line.

However, Barnes did strike in stoppage time, keeping his cool to finish beyond Alex McCarthy after racing on to another assist from Tielemans.

Leicester, now unbeaten in five Premier League matches, go second on 35 points, a point behind leaders Manchester United, who face third-placed Liverpool on Sunday.

Southampton drop to eighth on 29 points.
