Sancho will not Leave Dortmund

England forward Jadon Sancho will remain a Borussia Dortmund player next season, says the club’s sporting director Michael Zorc.

The 20-year-old has been named in the Bundesliga club’s squad for this week’s training camp in Switzerland.

It comes on the day of the deadline set by Dortmund for any deal to be agreed for Sancho, who is Manchester United’s top summer target.

“We plan on having Jadon Sancho in our team this season,” said Zorc.

“The decision is final. I think that answers all our questions.

“Last summer we adjusted Jadon’s salary to match the development of his performances. So in context, we had already extended his contract until 2023 back then.”

Dortmund want about £100m for Sancho, who they signed from Manchester City for £10m in 2017.

Sancho and England Under-17 midfielder Jude Bellingham are among 31 players to travel to Bad Ragaz.

Bellingham, 17, joined Dortmund from Championship side Birmingham City in July.

Dortmund have two matches during their training camp, against Austrian sides SCR Altach on Wednesday and Austria Vienna on Sunday.

They set the deadline for Sancho, who is under contract with them until 2022, because they want undisturbed preparation for the 2020-21 Bundesliga season.

The new campaign starts on 18 September, with the transfer deadline for international deals on 5 October.

Phil Jones out of the Europa League

Manchester United defender Phil Jones has not travelled to the Europa League final eight tournament in Germany because of a knee injury.

The 28-year-old’s last match was an FA Cup tie at Tranmere on 26 January.

“Phil has been following an individualised training programme during the post-lockdown period to optimise recovery from a knee problem,” said United boss Old Gunnar Solskjaer.

United play Copenhagen on Monday in their quarter-final.

The ties in the closing stages of the competition will be single-leg games and held at venues across Germany, including Dusseldorf, Gelsenkirchen, Duisburg and Cologne.

After the last-eight games on 10-11 August, the semi-finals take place on 16-17 August, with the final four nights later.

Jones has played just eight times this season. Solskjaer said he would continue to work with a fitness coach while the squad was in Germany.

Defenders Axel Tuanzebe and Luke Shaw had already been ruled out of the trip because of injury

MANCHESTER UNITED READY TO WELCOME OFFERS FOR JESSE LINGARD

Manchester United are ready to listen to offers for Jesse Lingard with the England international deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford despite his recent goal-scoring form.

The 27-year-old has struggled for game time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season, making nine Premier League starts but only one since the turn of the year.

The arrival of Bruno Fernandes in January and the emergence of Mason Greenwood as a first team starter have seen Lingard slip further down the pecking order and his chances of starting big games are now very slim.

The England World Cup star has taken his chances to shine in recent weeks. coming off the bench to score in the final Premier League game of the season against Leicester and then netting against LASK in the Europa League earlier this week.

Two goals in two games has not been enough to keep the United hierarchy that he should stay, though, and he is available for transfer this summer, according to the Guardian.

A price has not been mentioned, but with United looking to do a deal and many clubs struggling economically due to the coronavirus crisis, it will almost certainly be below the £30m mark.

Lingard has one year left on his contract at Old Trafford, although the club have the option to extend it by another year, which they may do if a deal cannot be struck and they do not want to risk losing him on a free next summer.

The midfielder had hinted at a United stay, or at least that he wanted to remain at Old Trafford in an Instagram post last month.

‘Im starting with the man in the mirror im asking him to change his ways,’ wrote Lingard.

‘This season has been difficult for so many reasons. I lost who I was as a player and person, but I never wanted to give up, I knew who I really was on and off the pitch and knew that having been there before I could get there again.

‘This meant working harder than I’d ever done before and trusting in those around me that they knew how to best help me achieve that. I know the fans have been frustrated but in all this time my love for this club and everyone connected to it has never left me.

This team, this club is my family and I will continue to keep working harder than ever to help this team achieve its goals.

MANCHESTER UNITED, INTER MILAN NEAR AGREEMENT ON SANCHEZ TRANSFER DEAL.

Manchester United seem to be getting their transfer business done quick in the summer, as the premier League giant are near an agreement with Inter Milan for the final transfer of Alexis Sanchez.

JUVENTUS EYE CHRIS SMALLING SWAP DEAL

Juventus are reportedly prepared to offer Federico Bernardeschi in a swap deal for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling.

The defender has spent the last year in Italy on loan at Roma where he impressed but is poised to return to Old Trafford.

Roma want to keep the 30-year-old on a permanent basis but have been unable to agree a fee with United which could open the door for Juventus.

Italian sources claim the Old Lady will try to lower United’s asking price by offering Bernardeschi in a part-exchange deal.

The 26-year-old has made 37 appearances in all competitions under Maurizio Sarri this season, helping Juve to another Serie A title

United are looking to bolster their forward line in the transfer window but are prioritising the signing of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.

Should they fail to land him then Bernardeschi may be seen as a credible alternative as it would also allow Mason Greenwood to continue his development.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is unlikely to welcome Smalling back into the United fold next season, with Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof the first choice centre-backs currently.

The defender could further bolster one of Europe’s toughest defences should he be tempted by a move to Turin.

Smalling has received rave reviews from Roma boss Paulo Fonseca who claims the defender wants to remain in Italy.

“I will do everything I can to keep him at Roma next year too,” he said back in May. “I know he wants to stay, let’s see what happens.

“He’s an amazing man, so humble, so professional. He is adored by the fans and established himself as one of the leaders in the dressing room.

“It’s not easy for English central defenders to adapt so quickly to Italian football, the record there isn’t good. But he has been amazing.”

Roma finished their season fifth in Serie A, meaning they have qualified for next season’s Europa League once more.

MANCHESTER UNITED DIDN’T GIVE ME MORE TIME LIKE THEY DID SOLSKJAER – MOYES

West Ham United manager David Moyes have said that his Manchester United counterpart Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is building an exciting team having been given time on the job, something the Scot felt he was not afforded at Old Trafford.

Moyes, who replaced long-term United manager Alex Ferguson in 2013, was dismissed after only 10 months in charge.

“Ole had a difficult start, but the difference between Ole and me is that he’s being given time. He’s bringing players in from the academy, which United have always stood for,” Moyes told a news conference.

“They have got really exciting young players of their own now… It’s a wonderful club and a brilliant place to be, and the biggest club in the world, for me. It’s always a special place to go and I’m looking forward to going back.”

Solskjaer’s United were on an unbeaten run of 19 matches in all competitions before losing to Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-finals on Sunday.

West Ham have won their last two league games, scoring seven goals to climb to 16th on 37 points, with two rounds remaining and Premier League survival in sight.

Moyes said Czech midfielder Tomas Soucek, who joined on loan from Slavia Prague in January, was part of his future plans.

“He’s a West Ham player, simple as that,” Moyes said.

The Hammers forced United to a draw on Wednesday night, making Solskjaer’s men wait till the final game day to earn a champions league spot.

Ole defends his players

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says his Manchester United players are not divers and “none of them try to con the referee at all”.

Before Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final Chelsea boss Frank Lampard suggested that United have “got a few decisions in their favour” in recent weeks.

Solskjaer said: “I’ll defend my players 100%.

“Some ankles could have been broken this season. I just want them to be protected.”

United are unbeaten in 19 games in all competitions and opponents have been angered by some recent decisions.

In midweek Crystal Palace were furious that they were denied a penalty when Wilfried Zaha tangled with Victor Lindelof, and then had a potential equaliser from Jordan Ayew ruled out by VAR for a very marginal offside.

And Bruno Fernandes won a penalty at Villa Park earlier this month which Villa boss Dean Smith called a “disgraceful decision”.

Referring to that decision, Lampard said this week: “Fernandes is very clever in his movement. We saw that at Aston Villa to make something feel like a penalty where maybe it even isn’t.

“As a player we can talk about VAR decisions and whether they’re right or wrong. But if a player is going to dangle a leg and not move their feet then you obviously do leave yourself open to penalties, VAR or no VAR.’

Solskjaer, speaking before his side meet Chelsea at Wembley, said: “If you’ve got quick feet like Dan James, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood you’ll get tackled outside and inside the box,” said Solskjaer.

“We’ve earned our right to any decision this season. We’ve had decisions overturned from being against us to being for us which means the initial decision was against us.

“It’s up to the referee but there’s too many people talking and trying to influence people, I don’t want to. VAR is there to help get more correct decisions.

“I’ve always said a factual decision is a fact so 1cm or 1m offside you’re offside that’s just how it is in football now.”

United are aiming to win the FA Cup for a record-equalling 13th time this season and Solskjaer – who won the trophy twice as a player for the club – knows the importance of adding more silverware to the Old Trafford cabinets.

“When you are at United, yes, you need to win trophies,” he said.

“That’s what we’ve done in our history, and we want to win trophies playing the right way.

Manchester United still in fight for Champions league space

Manchester United have “earned the right” to challenge for a top-four finish in the Premier League after a “fantastic” spell of post-lockdown form, says boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

United maintained their relentless pursuit of a place in the Champions League with a hard-fought win against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Solskjaer’s side were under pressure after Leicester City’s earlier victory over Sheffield United and responded with a victory that keeps them in fifth place, level on points with the Foxes but with an inferior goal difference.

It extended United’s unbeaten run to 19 games in all competitions, and Solskjaer believes United, who are still in the FA Cup and Europa League, have set themselves up for a thrilling end to the season.

“No-one thought in January that we would be in with a shout for top four,” he said.

“We have done fantastic since the restart. These are the games that matter. That is the thing at Manchester United, you have to step up and show your personality.”

United were made to work for their victory, Marcus Rashford breaking the deadlock with a stylish finish in first-half stoppage time before playing his part in a sweet move involving Bruno Fernandes that was rounded off by Anthony Martial in the 78th minute.

Palace felt a real sense of injustice, furious that they were denied a penalty just before United took the lead when Wilfried Zaha tangled with Victor Lindelof, and then seeing a potential 55th-minute equaliser from Jordan Ayew ruled out by VAR for a very marginal offside.

It meant Roy Hodgson’s side slumped to their sixth consecutive league loss and their night was made worse when defender Patrick van Aanholt suffered a dislocated shoulder after trying to prevent Martial scoring United’s second.

Rashford to get honorary doctorate

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford will become the youngest person to receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Manchester for his campaign against child poverty.

Rashford, 22, campaigned for the government to allow about 1.3 million children to claim free school meal vouchers in England’s summer holidays.

The award is the highest honour the university can bestow.

England forward Rashford said it was “a proud day for myself and my family”.

United legends Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Bobby Charlton have previously received the award from the university.

Rashford said: “When you look at the great names that have been awarded this doctorate in the past, it’s humbling.

“We still have a long way to go in the fight to combat child poverty in this country but receiving recognition from your city means we are heading in the right direction and that means a lot.

Psg want Rashford

Paris Saint-Germain have had an awful lot of time to plan for next season, but manager Thomas Tuchel has been absolutely unwavering on one view. There’s been no second-guessing himself, or mulling it over.

The German sees Marcus Rashford as a top target. Tuchel has been even more emphatic when discussing it with key figures around the club. He thinks England “don’t realise how good a player Rashford actually is”.

The Old Trafford hierarchy, however, greatly value Rashford. It may take quite the offer to see how much. Even in this Covid-19 deflated market, United would want over £100m. Tuchel would probably be willing to pay it.

The PSG boss adores Rashford’s directness and versatility. He feels that willingness to run, as well as some of the more selfless aspects of his game, can greatly complement Neymar and Kylian Mbappe. Rashford could even represent a long-term alternative to Mbappe, if Real Madrid can eventually make their move there.

This is also what Tuchel prizes. He feels Rashford can play in a number of positions, without his level dropping in any of them. That versatility is of particular value to Tuchel because of the variety he loves in his team’s attacks, as well as the desire for them to interchange and offer a whirlwind of movement.

He sees Rashford as “the perfect model of the modern dynamic attacking player”, who you can see fitting into most elite teams. ✕

It isn’t the only interest Rashford has had from major continental club, after all. Barcelona were very keen last year, at the time when they were trying to increase their points of attack, and trying to figure out who best to sign. They felt Rashford would have been perfectly suited to La Liga. They were also particularly impressed with his England form, and felt these showed that bigger games bring out even more in the 22-year-old.

Barca didn’t act at the time, both because they believed it would be too difficult to do a deal with United, and because there was an existing dialogue with Antoine Griezmann. What is true is that Rashford probably would have suited Barca’s 4-3-3 better than the French star, especially when producing that “wide raider” form that Gareth Southgate has so lionised.
