CRYSTAL PALACE 0-2 NEWCASTLE: LATE STRIKES FROM WILSON, JOELINTON GIVES VICTORY TO THE MAGPIES.

Newcastle United left it late as goals from Callum Wilson and Joelinton secured a 2-0 Premier League win at Crystal Palace on Friday night.

Back in the team after a hamstring injury, Wilson gave Newcastle the lead in the 88th minute at Selhurst Park by running onto a pass from strike partner Joelinton and sliding a finish through the legs of goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.

Joelinton then broke clear in the 90th, cut onto his left foot and sent in a shot that deflected in off sliding Palace centre-back Gary Cahill.

Newcastle came into the match having lost two straight games, and the win took Steve Bruce’s team to 10th place.

The absence of Wilfried Zaha again proved telling for Palace, with Roy Hodgson’s star man also missing in the 1-0 loss at Burnley on Monday after contracting coronavirus.

Palace dropped to 13th, a point below Newcastle.

NEWCASTLE 0-2 CHELSEA: ABRAHAM STRIKE TO GIVE BLUES CONVINCING WIN AT ST. JAMES’S PARK.

Tammy Abraham’s second-half goal helped move Chelsea to the top of the table in a 2-0 win at Newcastle United.

Chelsea went in front on 10 minutes as Mason Mount’s cross was turned into his own net by Federico Fernandez under pressure from Ben Chilwell.

The visiting team had a great chance to double their lead on the half-hour but Timo Werner shot wide when through on goal.

Chelsea sealed a third consecutive win in the league on 65 minutes when Werner beat three players before teeing up Abraham to score.

Sean Longstaff’s shot that struck the bar was the closest Newcastle came to a goal.

Chelsea are seven matches unbeaten and go above Leicester City on goal difference.

Newcastle remain on 11 points in 13th.

SOTON 2-0 NEWCASTLE: SAINTS GO TOP OF THE PREMIER LEAGUE TABLE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 32 YEARS.

Southampton moved top of the Premier League for the first time in their history after beating Newcastle 2-0 at St Mary’s.

A seventh-minute strike from Che Adams gave the home side an early lead and they wrapped up victory in the 82nd minute through Stuart Armstrong.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men dominated possession and chances as they sealed a comfortable win that saw them replace Liverpool at the top of the table ahead of this weekend’s fixtures.

The Saints last stood at the summit of English football 32 years ago under the management of Chris Nicholl and it marks a remarkable 12 months for the Austrian manager since their 9-0 thrashing by Leicester last October.

Newcastle, who had yet to be beaten away from home in the Premier League this season and headed into the game on the south coast in good form, having beaten Everton 2-1 in their previous fixture, but often lacked control and managed just four shots during the game.

Southampton moved level on 16 points with defending champions Liverpool, but could be overtaken by the Reds, Leicester, Tottenham or Everton if they win at the weekend.

The Saints took the lead with the first real chance of the game.

Karl Darlow was forced into a diving save to deny Adams with a curled strike from the edge of the area, but Newcastle were unable to clear the danger.

Theo Walcott won the ball back on the right after Miguel Almiron failed to clear his lines before playing in Adams, who fired it past the Newcastle goalkeeper to give his side the advantage.

Adams had another chance five minutes later when he controlled the ball in the box before taking a shot, but his effort lacked power and Darlow was able to gather.

After the goal, Newcastle tried to get a foothold in the game. Their first real chance came in the 22nd minute, but Sean Longstaff’s header from Jamal Lewis’ cross was straight at goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.

Walcott had an opportunity to double his side’s lead just before the half-time break but his curled shot was just wide of the target.

At the start of the second half, Jamaal Lascelles denied Southampton a second with a clearance off the line from Jan Bednarek’s effort, before Darlow was forced into a fingertip save to force Oriol Romeu’s drive from distance onto the woodwork and over.

Southampton had a penalty shout after Walcott was brought down by Lascelles in the area, but the challenge was not reviewed by VAR.

The home side were eventually rewarded for their dominance in the 82nd minute when they made it 2-0. Armstrong capitalised on a mis-timed pass from Sean Longstaff before cutting in and driving the ball past Darlow.

Joelinton almost pulled one back for the visitors, forcing McCarthy into a diving save to push the substitute’s header over the bar, but Southampton held on to secure all three points and move to the top of the league.

NEWCASTLE 2-1 EVERTON: CALLUM WILSON DOWNS THE TOFFEES AT ST. JAMES’S PARK.

A second half brace from Callum Wilson helped Newcastle United to all three points against Everton.

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford found himself taken out of the firing line as Toffees boss Carlo Ancelotti handed Robin Olsen a debut.

The Swede made a decent block from Allan Saint-Maximin to help keep the game goalless at half-time.

But Newcastle broke the deadlock in the 56th minute when Callum Wilson converted a penalty after being fouled by Andre Gomes at a corner.

Everton, missing the likes of playmaker James Rodriguez and suspended Brazilian frontman Richarlison, could not find a way back into the match.

Wilson wrapped up victory with a second goal five minutes from time when he slotted in after Ryan Fraser’s cross had deflected up off Everton defender Yerry Mina.

Despite a stoppage-time goal from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Newcastle saw out the closing stages as goalkeeper Karl Darlow tipped a late effort over.

The Toffees remain second, three points behind Merseyside rivals Liverpool, while Newcastle move into the top 10.

UNITED RAIN LATE GOALS TO EASE PAST NEWCASTLE AT ST. JAMES’S PARK.

A flurry of late goals helped Manchester United to a 4-1 victory over Newcastle United at St. James’ Park.

The visitors were behind through a Luke Shaw own goal after two minutes before captain Harry Maguire restored parity 21 minutes later, heading in Juan Mata’s corner.

Referee Craig Pawson awarded Man Utd a penalty in the second half after reviewing Jamal Lewis’s challenge on Marcus Rashford on the pitchside monitor, but Bruno Fernandes was denied by Karl Darlow.

The Portuguese redeemed himself with a curled finish high into the net with four minutes of normal time remaining, before Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s powerful strike made it 3-1 on 90 minutes.

Rashford raced through to complete the scoring in the sixth minute of stoppage time, giving the Red Devils their second win of the season.

They now sit 14th in the table, one point and three places behind Newcastle.

UNDER-FIRE HARRY MAGUIRE DOUBTFUL FOR UNITED’S TRIP TO NEWCASTLE.

Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire is keen to play on and overcome his poor recent displays for club and country but could miss Saturday’s Premier League clash at Newcastle United with a knock, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said on Friday.

Maguire endured a torrid time in United’s 6-1 thrashing by Tottenham Hotspur before the international break and sustained an injury before being sent off in England’s 1-0 Nations League defeat by Denmark on Wednesday.

But Solskjaer backed the 27-year-old, who also featured in England’s 2-1 win over Belgium, to give his critics a fitting response if he is fit enough to play this weekend.

“When Harry is part of the England team that beats number one-ranked Belgium it’s a normal day. Then you get the headlines when you get a sending off, that’s football. You have to deal with it,” Solskjaer told reporters.

“Harry has got great resilience. He knows he will bounce back. He wants to play and work his way out of the last couple of games he’s been criticised for.

“But he picked up a knock just before he came off the other night so we’ll have a look at him today.”

United’s defeat by Spurs left them in 16th place with three points from as many matches and Solskjaer said his players were ready to turn their fortunes around.

“We know we’ve started the season badly and that game ended really badly… we know we have to perform better but we’ve now had two weeks to think about it, work on it,” Solskjaer said.

Solskjaer brushed off comments made by midfielder Paul Pogba who is out of contract next June and said on France duty that he would love to play for Real Madrid one day.

“Paul’s our player, he’s going to be here for another two years and sure he’s focused on doing his best for us and we want to see the best for Paul,” Solskjaer added.

“In the next couple of years I’m sure we’ll get the best out of him.”

ALAN SHEARER HAILS TYNE SIDE AFTER VICTORY OVER SHEFFIELD UNITED.

Newcastle United picked up a 3-0 win over Sheffield United at home today.

Goals from Matt Ritchie, Allan Saint-Maximin and Joelinton secured a vital win for Steve Bruce’s side. Newcastle have now managed to complete a league double over the Blades this season.

The win leaves Newcastle 12th in the table, 11 points clear of the drop zone. It is safe to assume that the Magpies will stay in the Premier League next season.

Meanwhile, Sheffield United will be bitterly disappointed with their performance. They were excellent before the lockdown but their form has dipped since the resumption. They were held to a draw against Villa in their opening game post-lockdown and now a defeat leaves them seventh in the table.
Newcastle Legend, Alan Shearer took to his twitter handle yo show love to his boyhood club. He said…

“Well done lads, a great win”.

Newcastle are in the middle of a takeover and if they can finish this season strongly, it could give the potential new owners immense confidence while they prepare for the next year.

FRESH PRESSURE ON SAUDI’S NEWCASTLE TAKE OVER AS PIRACY EVIDENCE IS RELEASED.

Fresh pressure has been put on the Premier League to reject a controversial £300m takeover of Newcastle by a Saudi-backed consortium after Fifa and Uefa heavily criticised Saudi Arabia for supporting a pirate service that illegally streamed football matches.

The forceful response from world and European football’s governing bodies came after the World Trade Organization ruled that the pirate beoutQ service was “operated by individuals or entities subject to the criminal jurisdiction of Saudi Arabia” and said the Saudi state had breached intellectual property rights by failing to tackle it.

The ruling, first revealed by the Guardian last month, also found that Saudi Arabia had repeatedly stopped sporting bodies, including the Premier League, from taking legal action against beoutQ there.

The de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, is also the chairman of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which is seeking a 80% stake in Newcastle. The WTO ruling will increase the scrutiny on the Premier League’s decision over whether to approve the takeover.

It is more than 10 weeks since the consortium contacted the league for approval – a process expected to take about 30 days. In the league’s owners’ and directors’ test there is a reference to digital piracy being a disqualifying factor and a clause requiring any prospective owner or director to have never provided “false, misleading or inaccurate information” in their dealings with the league. How closely the Saudi state and the Saudi PIF are aligned is being heavily investigated by Premier League lawyers.

The Premier League chief executive, Richard Masters, declined to comment but in a statement Fifa condemned what it called the “active involvement and support that has been provided by Saudi Arabia in the past three years” for the beoutQ service.

“Fifa agrees with the WTO panel’s recommendations and demands that Saudi Arabia takes the necessary steps in order that it conforms to its obligations under the Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights agreement with immediate effect in order to protect legitimate media rights partners, such as BeIN, and also football itself,” it said.

“The WTO panel’s recommendations are clear and piracy of football matches is an illegal activity and will not be tolerated on any level.”

Uefa pointed out that beoutQ was hosted on Arabsat, based on Riyadh and majority Saudi-owned. “What is clear is that beoutQ’s broadcasts constitute piracy of Uefa’s matches and as such, are illegal. BeoutQ was hosted on frequencies transmitted by Arabsat and was promoted and carried out by individuals and entities subject to Saudi Arabia’s territorial jurisdiction. Piracy not only threatens that investment but also the existence of professional sport as we know it.”

The WTO report followed a complaint by Qatar over the piracy of its broadcaster beIN Sports, which holds the rights to show Premier League games in the Middle East.

In its evidence to the WTO, beIN claimed the Saudi government and senior figures had promoted piracy in “governmental tweets” and via giant screens in public gatherings during the 2018 World Cup.

BeoutQ has since been removed from Arabsat. However, beoutQ illegal set-top boxes which allow the streaming of major broadcasters, including Sky and BT, are still widely available across the region.

In a statement following the WTO ruling the Saudi Arabian government said it had a “strong record of protecting intellectual property and is committed to applying its national law and procedures in full conformity with WTO rules”.
