MANCITY’S BENJAMIN MENDY TO STAND TRIAL FOR RAPE IN JANUARY

Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy will stand trial on rape and sexual assault charges on Jan. 24 after the Chester Crown Court set a trial date on Friday, British media reported.

The 27-year-old, who was denied bail last week after he was charged with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, has been remanded in custody.

The BBC reported that Eleanor Laws, who is defending Mendy, said there would be an application to dismiss the charges at a hearing on Nov. 15. A co-defendant Louis Saha Matturie, 40, has also been accused of four counts of rape.

The charges against Mendy, who has been suspended by the Premier League club, relate to three complainants and are alleged to have taken place between October 2020 and August 2021.

Mendy, who has played for France 10 times and won the World Cup in 2018, was signed by City from AS Monaco in 2017 for a fee in the region of 52 million pounds ($72.04 million). He has won the Premier League three times with City.

BOATENG FOUND GUILTY OF BODILY HARM, FINED €1.8M

Lyon defender Jerome Boateng was found guilty of premeditated bodily harm on his former partner Sherin Senler, a spokesperson for a court in Munich said on Thursday.

He was fined €1.8 million.

The 2014 World Cup winner, who had appeared in the Munich court wearing a dark blue suit, was accused of injuring his ex-girlfriend in a fight during a vacation in 2018.

Boateng, 33, had denied wrongdoing and told Munich District Court that he did not hit and injure Senler in July 2018 when they were on vacation in the Turks and Caicos Islands. He was charged with allegations of dangerous bodily harm and verbal abuse against Senler, with whom he has two children.

According to the indictment, Boateng beat her, boxed her, bit her head, threw her on the ground and insulted her. DPA news agency reported the public prosecutors’ office also accuses Boateng of throwing a glass lantern and cooling bag at Senler.

The former Germany and Bayern Munich defender told the court his former partner had become aggressive and insulting during a dispute after a game of cards. He said she hit him and injured his lip, and that she fell when he tried to push her away. He disputed throwing a lantern at her, but said it fell when he threw a cushion at a table.

Boateng’s lawyer, Kai Walden, previously said his client was disputing the allegations.

Boateng appeared at the court on Thursday, the only scheduled day for the trial, which had been delayed because of coronavirus restrictions.

The defender signed with French team Lyon on a free this summer after Bayern declined to extend his contract.

MAN CITY’S BENJAMIN MENDY DENIED BAIL AHEAD RAPE TRIAL

Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy was refused bail Wednesday and will remain in custody ahead of a trial scheduled to start on Sept. 10 after being charged with four counts of rape and one sexual assault.

The 27-year-old Mendy has been in custody at a prison in Liverpool, northwest England, since last Friday, when he appeared in court and faced the charges.

A second bail application was made in a closed hearing that lasted about 50 minutes, and it was turned down.

The France international did not attend the hearing. Mendy is charged with attacks on three different women, including one under 18, at his home.

Three of the rapes are alleged to have taken place in October 2020 and he is accused of sexually assaulting a woman in early January this year.

He is also charged with raping a woman last month.

Mendy has been suspended by the club, pending an investigation.

A second man, aged 40, was arrested on suspicion of rape as part of the police investigation into the allegations but was released on bail, police said.

Mendy joined City from Monaco in 2017 and has won the Premier League three times and the English League Cup twice.

CHILD FOOD CAMPAIGN ONLY JUST BEGINNING – RASHFORD

Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford has pledged he is only at the beginning of a long campaign to end child food poverty and his bid to make sure the next generation start life with a level playing field.

England international Rashford has seen his profile raised on and off the field during the Covid-19 pandemic, with the 23-year-old awarded an MBE during October in the delayed Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

Rashford successfully lobbied the Government into a U-turn over its free school meals policy in England during the first coronavirus lockdown, ensuring children in need would receive food over the summer.

The United forward has again led the way in January when tackling the issues over poor-quality food parcels which have been sent out to families, revealing on Twitter he had spoken to Prime Minister Boris Johnson and been assured “a full review of the supply chain” is under way.

On Thursday, Rashford was honoured with the Football Writers’ Association 2021 Tribute Award in recognition of his outstanding campaign, which the FWA said “goes even wider than simply a football context”.

Despite having achieved so much already, Rashford maintains there is still more work to be done.

We are at the beginning of what I see as a long journey,” Rashford said in an interview on www.footballwriters.co.uk.

“I am definitely not at the stage of relief yet, I feel that there is a lot more which needs to be done and a lot more steps which need to be taken forward.

“On the positive side we have started to take a few steps in the right direction, but for me now just because we have done that (it) is not about just sitting back now and being happy with what we have done.

“It is about what is next in the chapter of these children’s lives.”

Rashford continued: “That is a big issue for me and my team who are working on it – the numbers who still don’t have the support they need.

We know we have managed to reach a lot more people that weren’t getting reached, but there are still people out there who are really struggling.

“If we can make a five or 10 per cent difference to every single one of their lives, then it puts everyone at a good baseline and then we can start to work on foundations for the future.

“But until everyone is on the same playing field, it is difficult to start jumping ahead and asking for things that are necessary, but the timing would be wrong.

“We need to make sure everyone is on the same level first and then we can start to improve that level until they are where they belong.”

Former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson paid a personal tribute to Rashford’s “truly amazing achievement”.

The 79-year-old told the FWA: “Marcus has shown to young people in particular there is a different way of dealing with life.

KARIM BENZEMA TO FACE TRIAL ON ALLEGED SEX TAPE BLACKMAIL SCANDAL.

Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema will face trial for complicity in an attempt to blackmail in a case linked to a sex tape featuring his former France team-mate Mathieu Valbuena, French prosecutors said.

The public prosecutor’s office in Versailles, France said on Thursday the trial was ordered against the player for complicity in attempting to pressure Valbuena, who was allegedly threatened in a phone call in June 2015, with the publication of the video.

He will stand trial on the charge of conspiracy to attempt blackmail, the prosecutor’s office said. A date for the trial has yet to be set.

The 33-year-old Benzema, one of the most talented French forwards of his generation, has been banned from the national team since November 2015 because of his suspected involvement in the scandal, despite consistently performing well with Spanish giants Real Madrid.

The investigators who charged Benzema believe he was approached by a childhood friend that year to act as an intermediary and convince Valbuena to deal directly with the blackmailers. Instead, Valbuena informed the police.

Four other people will also stand trial in the case. Benzema denies any wrongdoing.

“This decision is as much absurd as it was predictable,” Benzema lawyer, Sylvain Cormier, told The Associated Press news agency, denouncing perceived “persecution” against the player.

When the story broke, Benzema faced a deluge of criticism and then-Prime Minister Manuel Valls said the former Lyon player had “no place” in the national team. Former French President Francois Hollande was quoted as saying in a book that Benzema was not an example of morality.

Neither Benzema nor Valbuena was selected by coach Didier Deschamps for the Euro 2016 finals on home soil in which France were beaten in the final by Portugal.

Benzema has not played for France since scoring twice in a 4-0 win over Armenia in October 2015, taking his tally to 27 goals in 81 internationals.

Tottenham star Serge Aurier’s brother has been shot dead on the streets of France at 5am this morning.

The Ivory Coast full-back featured in Spurs’ 2-1 win over north London rivals Arsenal on Sunday evening.

But his brother Christopher, 26, has been fatally shot in the early hours of the morning in Toulouse.

Aurier’s brother was pronounced dead in hospital, while the perpetrator is still said to be on the run and is yet to be caught by authorities.

Local residents called the police after discovering a man lying on the ground with a gun wound to the stomach.

Local media outlet La Dépêche are indicating that the incident occurred near a late night establishment.

Tottenham confirmed the news on social media this morning with a touching statement.

The Club is deeply saddened to confirm media reports that Serge Aurier’s brother passed away in the early hours of this morning,” it read.

“Everybody at the Club sends their sincerest condolences to Serge and his family. Our thoughts are with them all.”

Christopher Aurier also played football, albeit at an amateur level, currently at Toulouse Rodéo in the fifth-tier of the French football pyramid.

Christopher also trained at RC Lens like his older brother, but failed to break through to the highest level.

The sibling also had trials at English club Brentford in 2011.

Back in 2017, Christopher was arrested for allegedly stealing from a sex worker in Lille.

According to reports the two men involved arranged the meeting via the internet, before threatening the woman in her flat with a fake handgun and tear-gassed her when she refused to hand over money.

Christopher is said to have left DNA at the scene.
