ADEMOLA LOOKMAN NETS WINNER AS FULHAM BEAT SHEFFIELD UNITED TO CUT GAP TO 17TH

Fulham’s first home Premier League victory since November took them within three points of 17th-placed Newcastle as they held on to win 1-0 against rock-bottom Sheffield United.

Ademola Lookman broke the deadlock for the Cottagers in the 61st minute, with the home side going on to secure only their fourth win of the season.

Scott Parker’s men went into the game six points adrift of Newcastle but have closed the gap to just three, ahead of the Magpies’ trip to Manchester United on Sunday

Sheffield United, rooted to the foot of the table, struggled to really trouble in-form Fulham.

The game started quickly from both sides, with the noise from the dugouts adding to the tension of what seemed a must-win game

The Blades looked more dangerous from set-pieces, but Fulham, as has been the case on many occasions this season, struggled to really test Aaron Ramsdale in the United goal.

Chris Wilder’s men were penned back into their own half for much of the opening 45 minutes, but defended resolutely, with a number of well-timed trips in the midfield preventing Fulham from building up momentum.

Fulham’s stand-in captain in the long-term absence of Tom Cairney, Joachim Andersen was a commanding presence at the back, not only in organising the defence but with his well-weighted long balls to the front players.

Harrison Reed had a shot from distance straight at Ramsdale, with the goalkeeper also in the right place to deny Lookman.

United went into the half-time break without a touch or attempt in the Fulham box but were doing a good job of defending their own, and got men behind the ball to break up the home side’s attacks.

At the start of the second half, Ruben Loftus-Cheek came close to giving the home side the lead when he weaved his way through the United defence before his goal-bound shot hit Ramsdale’s outstretched leg and was cleared off the line by George Baldock.

Lookman put the hosts ahead just after the hour mark with his fourth goal of the season, and his second against the Blades.

The 23-year-old worked his way into the area from the left-hand side before firing a low drive past Ramsdale and into the back of the net.

Less than five minutes later, the visitors had their first shot on target, with Alphonse Areola just denying Enda Stevens with his legs in a one-on-one situation.

United had a penalty shout in the final minutes of the game, when Areola dived out to deny Jayden Bogle. The goalkeeper put his body on the line and just managed to get a touch on the ball before the collision.

WESTHAM THRASH SHEFFIELD UNITED

Declan Rice, Issa Diop and Ryan Fredericks each scored their first Premier League goals of the season as West Ham United beat Sheffield United 3-0.

After the home side had an early penalty decision overturned for offside by VAR, Rice scored from the spot four minutes before half-time after Chris Basham had brought down Jesse Lingard.

David McGoldrick was denied a Sheff Utd equaliser when Lukasz Fabianski superbly tipped his header over the bar.

Diop doubled the lead in the 58th minute when he rose highest to head Aaron Cresswell’s corner into the far corner of the net.

And Fredericks hit a late third after being set up by fellow substitute Said Benrahma.

The Hammers move above Liverpool to go fifth in the table on 42 points, behind Chelsea on goal difference.

Sheff Utd stay bottom on 11 points, 14 adrift of 17th-placed Newcastle United.

FA CUP ROUND UP: EVERTON SEE OF TOTTENHAM IN NINE GOAL THRILLER, LEICESTER, CITY, SHEFFIELD PROGRESS

Bernard’s extra-time strike saw Everton reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup after a thrilling nine-goal encounter against Tottenham.

The Toffees are in the hat for the sixth round as they got the better of Jose Mourinho’s Spurs – eventually progressing 5-4 after extra-time.

England captain Harry Kane was named on the bench for the visitors at Goodison Park but came on to head Tottenham level and take the game into an additional half an hour.

Earlier, a rare Davinson Sanchez goal had put Spurs in front only for Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison to strike inside three minutes to turn the tables.

Everton would go two goals ahead as Gylfi Sigurdsson converted a penalty against his former club after Calvert-Lewin had been fouled by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, only for Erik Lamela to reduce the arrears in first-half stoppage time.

There was plenty of drama still to come as Richarlison’s second of the night restored a two-goal margin, with Sanchez and Kane then heading home to level at 4-4.

Bernard was on hand to settle the contest with a fine finish in the first period of extra-time – Tottenham unable to fight back and slipping to defeat.

Manchester City advanced into the last eight with victory at Swansea – Pep Guardiola’s side entering the record books as they did so.

The 3-1 victory in south Wales means City have set a new record for the number of successive domestic wins by a top-flight club in England.

That run of wins extended to 15 courtesy of goals from Kyle Walker, Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus as Swansea debutant Morgan Whittaker pulled back a late consolation.

Kelechi Iheanacho’s last-gasp winner saw Leicester progress at the expense of Brighton.

In a game of few chances, both sides saw second-half strikes ruled out for offside only for Iheanacho to head home a quickly-taken corner in the dying stages to secure a 1-0 victory for the Foxes.

Sheffield United made the quarter-finals for the second successive season as Billy Sharp’s penalty was enough to see off 10-man Bristol City.

Referee Robert Jones dismissed Alfie Mawson after viewing replays on the pitchside monitor, with the defender blocking a David McGoldrick effort with his hand.

Sharp tucked away the resulting spot-kick to give the Blades a 1-0 win over their Sky Bet Championship visitors.

BILLY SHARP’S STRIKE HELP SHEFFIELD EDGE WESTBROM.

Billy Sharp was the hero as Sheffield United came from behind to beat West Bromwich Albion in a battle between the Premier League’s bottom two teams.

West Brom took a 41st-minute lead when Matt Phillips reacted quickest after Aaron Ramsdale had saved shots from both Callum Robinson and Mbaye Diagne.

Sheff Utd lost George Baldock to injury but they equalised 11 minutes after the break as Chris Basham set up Jayden Bogle to smash in.

The turnaround was completed on 73 minutes, with Sharp firing in from 10 yards after John Egan had knocked Basham’s cross back into his path.

Sheff Utd stay bottom and are 11 points from safety, but a third win in five matches lifts them just a point behind 19th-placed West Brom, who are winless in four matches.

JESUS EARLY GOAL HELP CITY SEE OFF STUBBORN SHEFFIELD.

Gabriel Jesus ended a run of nine matches without a goal as his early strike was enough for Manchester City to beat Sheffield United.

The Brazilian put City ahead on nine minutes, tapping in after good work from Ferran Torres.

The league leaders controlled possession but struggled to threaten in the first half beyond Bernardo Silva’s header straight at Aaron Ramsdale.

City created more in the second half, with Ruben Dias heading wide from Ilkay Gundogan’s corner, while Oleksandr Zinchenko’s shot from distance was well saved.

Sheff Utd stayed in touch and almost produced a late equaliser when John Fleck’s shot fizzed narrowly wide.

At the other end Ramsdale denied Jesus a second goal with a superb save in added time.

City’s eighth successive victory keeps them top on 44 points, four clear of Manchester United ahead of their match with Arsenal.

Sheff Utd stay bottom on eight points.

CALVERT-LEWIN STARS AS EVERTON EASE PAST SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY TO REACH FA CUP FIFTH ROUND.

Former Blade Dominic Calvert-Lewin was quickly back into the goalscoring groove after making his mark in Everton’s 3-0 FA Cup fourth-round win over Sheffield Wednesday.

The ex-Sheffield United trainee, who made a dozen appearances for the first team before moving to Goodison Park in 2016, scored his first goal in 50 days after returning from injury to help set up a fifth-round tie at home to either Wycombe or Tottenham.

Their performance was comfortable but not convincing against the Championship’s second-bottom team until two set-piece goals inside four second-half minutes from Richarlison and Yerry Mina.

However, there was never any real threat of an upset as Everton, in their 26th year without a trophy, edged closer to ending their long wait for silverware.

It owed much to the creative talents of James Rodriguez, who cruised through the game playing at his own pace but still dominated the ball and looked to be close to reaching the form which helped fire the Toffees to the top of the Premier League early in the season – even if both his assists came from corners.

If that continues, Calvert-Lewin – out since New Year’s Day because of a hamstring injury but who actually only missed two matches due to a Covid postponement against Aston Villa – will certainly benefit more.

Wednesday midfielder Adam Reach, who together with captain Barry Bannan provided the visitors’ creativity, served an early warning with a shot palmed away by Robin Olsen, one of five changes made by Carlo Ancelotti.

It was the incentive the hosts needed with Richarlison having a header tipped onto the crossbar and a goal ruled out for offside after a thread-needle through-ball from Rodriguez, whose clever pass at the end of an intricate passing move saw Calvert-Lewin denied at the near post.

But the England international was sharpest when it came to reacting to Andre Gomes’ cross, sliding in at the far post to divert home his 15th goal of the season just before the half-hour mark.

Andre Green’s Wednesday debut, after being released by Villa this month, lasted 45 minutes before he was replaced by Josh Windass but the change made little difference.

Calvert-Lewin was denied again when goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith turned his shot behind but the game was wrapped up around the hour mark.

Both goals came from almost identical corners from Rodriguez, the first flicked in by Richarlison with the second powered home by Mina.

With the job done – and Leicester to come on Wednesday – Ancelotti withdrew both his senior forwards and late on handed debuts to academy graduates Tyler Onyango, 17, and Thierry Small, who at 16 years and 176 days took the record for being Everton’s youngest away from Jose Baxter, who was 15 days older when he made his bow in 2008.

TOTTENHAM BEAT SHEFFIELD UTD TO ENTER TOP FOUR.

Brilliant goals from Harry Kane and Tanguy Ndombele helped Tottenham Hotspur move up to fourth in the table with a 3-1 win at Sheffield United.

Spurs went ahead on five minutes when Serge Aurier headed in a Son Heung-min corner from close range.

Jose Mourinho’s side added a superb second goal five minutes before the break.

Kane produced an exquisite turn from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s pass before firing beyond Aaron Ramsdale from outside the penalty area for his 12th league goal of the season.

Sheff Utd responded on 59 minutes when David McGoldrick scored with a firm header from John Fleck’s excellent cross.

But any hopes of a second-half fightback were diminished by Ndombele three minutes later, when he sublimely lobbed the ball beyond Ramsdale from an acute angle after a dinked through-ball by Steven Bergwijn.

Spurs move ahead of Manchester City, who have two matches in hand, on 33 points. Sheff Utd remain bottom, 11 points from safety.

SIGURDSSON’S LATE GOAL MOVE EVERTON TO SECOND ON THE LOG.

Gylfi Sigurdsson’s 80th-minute strike earned Everton a fourth consecutive victory as they moved up to second place with a 1-0 win at Sheffield United.

Abdoulaye Doucoure teed up Sigurdsson, who took a touch before drilling a low shot into the bottom-left corner to clinch all three points.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Sigurdsson both fired narrowly off target during the first half, while Oliver Burke shot inches wide for Sheff Utd.

Enda Stevens lashed over the crossbar and substitute Oliver McBurnie missed an opportunity as Sheff Utd pushed for a late equaliser.

Everton kept their hosts at bay to move up to 29 points, two behind leaders Liverpool who have a match in hand at West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

Sheff Utd remain bottom of the table on two points.

BHA 1-1 SHU: LUNDSTRAM SEES RED AS LATE WELBECK STRIKE DENIES SHEFFIELD UTD FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON.

Super substitute Danny Welbeck rescued a point for Brighton & Hove Albion and denied 10-man Sheffield United a first win of the season.

Sheff Utd were close to a shock victory after Jayden Bogle had come off the bench to mark his Premier League debut with a goal that deflected in off Adam Webster on 63 minutes.

That goal came against the run of play after John Lundstram’s first-half red card, shown by Peter Bankes who used the Referee Review Area following the midfielder’s challenge on Joel Veltman.

The Blades had a late chance to seal victory but Oliver Burke blazed a great chance over the bar.

The 2,000 fans in attendance at Amex Stadium roared Brighton on and Welbeck made Burke pay when he showed superb control and volleyed in with three minutes remaining.

Brighton could have snatched a win but Welbeck’s stoppage-time header was cleared off the line before Alireza Jahanbakhsh headed against a post.

It means Brighton stay 16th and miss the opportunity to go above Arsenal. Bottom-of-the-table Sheff Utd are on two points, eight adrift of safety.

SOTON 3-0 SHU: SAINTS GO THIRD AFTER THRASHING THE BLADES AT ST. MARY’S.

Southampton moved up to third in the table as the return of fans to St Mary’s spurred them on to a 3-0 win over Sheffield United.

Saints dominated the first half and went close on 20 minutes when Jannik Vestergaard headed James Ward-Prowse’s cross narrowly wide.

The hosts eventually went ahead on 34 minutes when Sheff Utd could not clear Ward-Prowse’s free-kick and Che Adams was at the back post to finish from close range.

Sheff Utd improved at the start of the second half, with John Egan putting a header wide at the near post from John Fleck’s corner.

But Southampton doubled their lead on 62 minutes when Danny Ings found Stuart Armstrong to score with a deflected shot.

Substitute Nathan Redmond’s run and shot sealed victory with seven minutes remaining.

Back-to-back victories move Saints one point clear of Chelsea with 23 points. The Blades remain bottom of the table with one point from their opening 12 matches
