HARRY KANE TO STAY AT TOTTENHAM FOR ONE MORE SEASON

Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy is reportedly ready to reject Manchester City’s interest in Harry Kane to keep the England captain in North London for one more season.

Man City are keen to sign the 28-year-old during this summer’s transfer window, while Kane is thought to have made it clear that he wants to join the Premier League champions.

However, according to The Times, the forward is set to spend one more year at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Levy determined to keep hold of him.

The report claims that Spurs feel Man City have left it too late in the transfer window, as Nuno Espirito Santo’s side would struggle to sign a replacement at this stage.

Kane is expected to be in the squad for Sunday’s Premier League clash with Pep Guardiola’s side but could be named on the bench, having only just returned to the club following a holiday.

The striker, who scored four times in seven appearances for his country at Euro 2020, still has three years left to run on his contract in the English capital.

TOTTENHAM HOPEFUL OF SIGNING LAUTARO MARTINEZ FROM INTER MILAN IN €71M

Tottenham are pushing to complete a move for Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez after indicating they are willing to meet the club’s €71 million valuation, sources have confirmed.

Spurs and Arsenal are among the clubs tracking Martinez in hope of securing a deal with Inter, who are under pressure to offload players as a result of financial losses arising from the coronavirus pandemic.

It is understood Spurs believe they have agreed a fee in principle but sources close to Inter have dismissed suggestions they are ready to sanction a transfer.

The situation has been complicated by Chelsea’s pursuit of Romelu Lukaku. Inter have already seen Achraf Hakimi join Paris Saint-Germain and also agreed a fee of €115m with Chelsea for Lukaku.

The departure of Lukaku will spark fury among Inter fans and the club have a difficult decision whether to exacerbate tensions further by allowing Lukaku’s strike partner to leave.

It is unclear whether the departures of Hakimi and Lukaku will be enough to relieve the financial pressure from Inter’s Chinese owners Suning. They are also listening to offers for the club as a whole after Chinese President Xi Jinping urged the country’s investors to focus their efforts on domestic pursuits.

Spurs are privately insisting the club’s pursuit of a striker this summer is an effort to add support for Harry Kane and not replace him despite Manchester City’s desire to sign the England captain.

Tottenham have so far shown no willingness to negotiate with City, who are refusing at this stage to offer the £150m it would take for chairman Daniel Levy to consider doing business. Sources have also suggested new head coach Nuno Espirito Santo wants his team to play with two forwards this season.

HEUNG-MIN SON SCORES WINNER AS SPURS BEAT ARSENAL IN PRE-SEASON FRIENDLY

Son Heung-Min’s 79th-minute strike gave Tottenham a 1-0 win over north London rivals Arsenal in a feisty friendly on Sunday.

Son’s left-foot drive after good work from substitute Japhet Tanganga ensured Spurs completed their preseason preparations with a hard-fought victory in front of around 25,000 fans at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It was the final match in The Mind Series — a competition between Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea organised to promote better mental health — with Spurs drawing 2-2 at Chelsea on Wednesday after Chelsea had beaten Arsenal 2-1 at Emirates Stadium last weekend.

Harry Kane was absent as he continues to isolate at the club’s training ground hotel after returning for preseason on Saturday but Spurs otherwise named a strong line-up with Hugo Lloris returning in goal and Son leading their attack.

Despite his absence, Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo said: “Harry is with us… I will speak with Harry probably as soon as possible because he is already at [Spurs’ training ground where he is isolating]. Not today, today was the day of the match but we have a training session [on Monday] and with social distancing I will hopefully speak with Harry.”

Spurs’ new signing Cristian Romero also didn’t feature because of a knee injury and Nuno added: “He didn’t train yet with the group, it is true. He finished the last game with a problem. It is much better now but we have to be very careful first, not take any chances. Like all the players, [Giovani Dos Santos], didn’t have many sessions, Hugo [Lloris], we have to manage a lot of aspects until we decide to put the player on the pitch. But he is here, he looks good. When he starts training in a normal way, he will become an option.”

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta partnered Albert Sambi Lokonga, an £18 million summer signing from Anderlecht, with Granit Xhaka in midfield and that pairing gradually gave the visitors a degree of control in the first half after a lively start from Spurs.

Son volleyed wide from the edge of the box in the sixth minute and should have scored 10 minutes later when side-footing straight at Bernd Leno from five yards out after good work from Lucas Moura.

However, Alexandre Lacazette began to influence proceedings and tested Lloris with a 25-yard shot which the Spurs goalkeeper turned behind before hitting the post with another effort from a similar distance.

Dele Alli was then booked for a late tackle on Nicolas Pepe, a sign of the competitive undercurrent which ran throughout a first half which ended with Arsenal on top yet Tottenham creating the best chance.

A good passage of play from the hosts saw Son tee up Alli as he arrived in the box but he could only hit the post from close range with the goal at his mercy.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Arteta exchanged words early into the second period after the former came close to colliding with the latter as he attempted to keep the ball in play. Arteta poked his finger into Hojbjerg’s chest as the Spurs midfielder argued he was out of his technical area, prompting an intervention from referee David Coote.

Arsenal duo Kieran Tierney and Xhaka were booked for late challenges before Spurs hit the woodwork again just before the hour mark.

Davinson Sanchez flicked on Son’s free kick from the right to the far post where Alli tried to turn it goalwards but he hit the upright again.

A brief cessation in hostilities saw Spurs fans warmly applaud Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka onto the pitch as he was introduced in the 63rd-minute for his first outing since missing a penalty in England’s Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy last month.

Spurs continued to look the more likely to score and eventually broke the deadlock when Tanganga persevered to force his way into the box before finding Son, who beat Leno with a powerful finish.

Eric Dier clipped the crossbar with a late free kick but Spurs saw the game out to condemn Arsenal to their second consecutive preseason defeat.

Asked postmatch about the absence of Rob Holding and Joe Willock, Arteta said: [They were missing for] two different reasons. Rob wasn’t available, he wasn’t fit enough to play today and with Joe, we will explain the reasons when we can. That’s all I can say now. When I can say more, I will let you know.”

Arsenal begin their Premier League campaign on Friday night at Brentford while Spurs host champions Manchester City next Sunday.

TOTTENHAM TO SIGN SERIE A DEFENDER OF THE YEAR CRISTIAN ROMERO FOR 55M

Tottenham Hotspur are expected to confirm the €55 million ($65m) signing of Atalanta defender Cristian Romero within the next 48 hours, sources have revealed.

The 23-year-old underwent the final part of his medical on Thursday and assuming no complications, he is then expected to fly to London to finalise the paperwork.

Spurs have agreed a deal believed to worth €50m with €5m in add-ons in a transfer that will rank as the second most expensive in the club’s history after Tanguy Ndombele’s €60m ($71m) arrival from Lyon in July 2019.

It would also be the third signing of new head coach Nuno Espirito Santo’s tenure after goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini arrived on loan also from Atalanta and Bryan Gil joined the club from Sevilla in a move which saw Erik Lamela travel in the opposite direction.

Spurs’ pursuit of Romero is believed to have been influenced by the club’s managing director of football, Fabio Paratici. The centre-back was named Serie A’s Defender of the Year last year during a campaign in which he made 42 appearances across all competitions as Atalanta finished third and lost the Coppa Italia final to Juventus.

Romero joined Atalanta on a two-year loan from Juventus at the start of the 2020-21 season with the option to make the deal permanent for €16m ($19m), payable in three instalments.

Spurs were keen on signing a centre-back throughout last season and with former boss Jose Mourinho identifying Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar as his preferred target. However, the clubs could not agree a fee and the arrivals of Nuno and Paratici have seen Tottenham shift their focus elsewhere.

HAKIM ZIYECH SCORES BRACE AS CHELSEA PLAY 2-2 DRAW IN TOTTENHAM FRIENDLY

Tottenham Hotspur fought back from two goals down to earn a 2-2 against Chelsea in an entertaining pre-season friendly at Stamford Bridge.

A brace from Blues winger Hakim Ziyech gave last season’s Champions League winners a lead their performance to that point deserved before Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn struck twice in 14 second-half minutes to wipe out their advantage.

Fresh from Sunday’s win over Arsenal in the opening game of “The Mind Series” — a preseason competition between the Blues, Spurs and the Gunners organised to support better mental health — Thomas Tuchel’s side started strongly before approximately 25,000 fans at Stamford Bridge.

Ziyech drove home his first from 20 yards after 16 minutes before netting again just three minutes into the second period. However, Spurs improved thereafter with Moura’s heavily-deflected shot halving the deficit and Bergwijn’s low finish restoring parity.

Tottenham were without Harry Kane after he failed to report back for preseason training as planned with the 28-year-old seeking a move to Manchester City but Son Heung-Min, who recently signed a new four-year deal, started in attack with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Dele Alli, Eric Dier and Sergio Reguilon among those also included in the line-up.

Chelsea made two changes to the team that beat the Gunners with N’Golo Kante and Marcus Alonso drafted in for Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Christian Pulisic.

Kante had excelled in the Champions League Final win against Manchester City — Cesar Azpilicueta brought the trophy out to a guard of honour and rapturous applause before kickoff — and he picked up that form in west London, helping the home side take firm control after Son’s fifth-minute low drive forced Edouard Mendy into an early save.

Spurs quickly looked overrun in midfield and as Moura picked up the ball and looked to drive over the halfway line, he was stopped in his tracks by a superb trademark tackle from Kante.

The loose ball fell to Ziyech and he took advantage of the space ahead of him to drive forward into a central position before unleashing a left-foot drive past new Spurs goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini, who joined the club in July on an initial season-long loan from Atalanta.

Chelsea continued to dominate and Timo Werner rounded Gollini to score just before the interval but his goal was ruled out — incorrectly — for offside.

Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo introduced Harry Winks for Hojbjerg at the interval as Chelsea brought on Pulisic and Tiemoue Bakayoko for Kante and Callum Hudson-Odoi but the Blues initially continued in the ascendancy.

Four minutes into the second half Werner, Kai Havertz and Alonso combined to find Ziyech in the box and his shot took a nick off Eric Dier before finding the net.

Spurs began their revival just before the hour mark when Moura’s shot deflected heavily off Antonio Rudiger and looped into the net.

Tuchel then made seven changes — including academy graduate Dijon Sterling, who tested Collina moments after coming on with a low left-foot shot from the edge of the box — but the Blues inevitably looked more disjointed as mistakes began to creep in.

And Spurs capitalised with 20 minutes remaining when another substitute — Malang Sarr — lost the ball allowing the visitors to break, Son feeding Bergwijn to finish low through Mendy’s legs.

Ben Davies, another second-half introduction, almost won it with a left-foot shot which Ethan Ampadu cleared off the line but the spoils were shared in a match from which both sides will take positives as they build up to competitive action next week with Chelsea set to face Villarreal in the UEFA Super Cup Final on Aug. 11.

Spurs play Arsenal in their final preseason friendly on Sunday.

CELTIC SIGN JOE HART AND JAMES MC CARTHY

Celtic have announced the double signing of Republic of Ireland midfielder James McCarthy and former England goalkeeper Joe Hart.

Goalkeeper Hart joins from Tottenham on a three-year deal while McCarthy has penned a four-year contract following his summer exit from Crystal Palace.

The Hoops will be hoping both men can have a positive impact on the squad after a difficult start to the season.

Manager Ange Postecoglou said on the club’s official site: “I’m delighted that we have signed two top-class players in Joe and James.

“Both of them have a wealth of experience at both club and international level and that is something which can only benefit the squad, and I’m looking forward to working with both of them.

“I know our supporters will be well aware of both players, and I’m sure they’ll welcome them to the club and look forward to seeing both of them play for Celtic in the seasons ahead.”

Hart, the 34-year-old former England and Manchester City goalkeeper, played 10 times for Spurs last season but only in FA Cup and Europa League games. He has left Spurs for £1 million with a year to go on his deal.

Postecoglou started the season with Greece international Vasilis Barkas, signed last year from AEK for a reported £5 million fee, between the sticks but he has been replaced by Scott Bain in what is widely perceived as a problem position for the Parkhead club.

Hart said: “This is a great moment for me in my career and I am absolutely delighted to be joining a club of Celtic’s stature.

“I know just how big this club is and of the incredible support that it enjoys, and I can’t wait to play in front of the fans at Celtic Park.

“I’m looking forward to meeting up with my new team-mates now and getting to work with the squad and, in particular, the other goalkeepers here.”

McCarthy returns to Scotland 10 years after leaving Hamilton following distinguished spells at Wigan, Everton and Palace.

The 30-year-old joins after two years at Selhurst Park.
James McCarthy left Crystal Palace in the summer after two seasons

He added: “To have signed for Celtic is a brilliant feeling and this is a special day for me and my family.

“I know all about the club, the size of it and all the success it’s enjoyed, particularly in recent years. I’m looking forward to pulling on the Hoops, playing at Paradise and helping the team deliver more success to these amazing fans in the seasons ahead.”

Postecoglou’s side are preparing to face Czech hosts Jablonec in the first leg of their Europa League third qualifying round on Thursday.

Celtic have already been knocked out of the Champions League qualifiers by Danish side Midtjylland and lost 2-1 to Hearts at Tynecastle in their cinch Premiership opener at Tynecastle on Saturday night.

HARRY KANE ABSENT AGAIN FROM TOTTENHAM PRE-SEASON TRAINING

Tottenham striker Harry Kane again failed to report for pre-season training on Tuesday.

The wantaway England captain was due back at Hotspur Way on Monday morning for Covid-19 and pre-season testing after his three-week break but did not show.

He was again absent 24 hours later, but is said to be planning on returning later in the week.

Spurs are choosing not to comment, but are understood to be aware of the star striker’s plans.

But they remain unimpressed by their player’s actions and could consider issuing a heavy fine.

Kane believes the action was necessary to try and force a move to Manchester City, who are keen to sign him.

But with three years left on his contract, Spurs have no intention of selling their prized asset and his actions are likely to irk chairman Daniel Levy.

Kane hinted at the end of last term that he would like to join City, but the Premier League champions have previously indicated they would not pay the sort of £150 million fee required to even tempt Spurs to the negotiating table.

Even then it is unlikely that Spurs would want to strengthen a Premier League rival.

The striker has been in the Bahamas following England’s run to the Euro 2020 final and looks to have set his stall out to force a move from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

New boss Nuno Espirito Santo, who was assured Kane would not be sold during discussions for the job, said last month that Kane could be “counted on” for the upcoming season.

Levy is determined to keep his star man and previously said that he would do whatever is best for the club.

Kane’s protest makes it highly unlikely that he will feature in Tottenham’s Premier League opener against — of all clubs — City on August 15th.

SPURS TO FINE HARRY KANE AFTER STRIKER FAILS TO REPORT FOR PRE-SEASON COVID TESTS

Tottenham are likely to fine striker Harry Kane after he failed to report for pre-season tests on Monday morning.

The England captain was due back at the club’s Hotspur Way training centre for a Covid test following his three-week break after the European Championship.

However, Kane did not arrive as planned, throwing his future further up into the air.

Spurs are now considering disciplining their vice-captain, the PA news agency understands.

The 28-year-old is keen to leave the club this summer in order to win trophies, but, with three years left on his contract, Spurs have no intention of selling their prized asset.

Kane hinted at the end of last term that he would like to join Manchester City, but the Premier League champions have previously indicated they would not pay the sort of £150 million fee required to even tempt Spurs to the negotiating table.

Their pursuit of Jack Grealish for £100 million is also reported to impact their ability to sign Kane.

HARRY KANE BOYCOTTS SPURS ROUTINE TEST, PUSHING FOR CITY MOVE

Tottenham striker Harry Kane did not report for pre-season tests on Monday morning.

TOBY ALDERWEREILD LEAVES TOTTENHAM FOR QATARI GIANTS AL DUHAIL

Toby Alderweireld has left Tottenham after six seasons with the Premier League outfit to join Qatari giants Al Duhail.

The move was confirmed by all parties on Tuesday, with Alderweireld stating it had been “an honour” to play for the North London outfit.

The Belgium international has won 113 caps for his national team and was part of the side that finished third at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

In his six seasons with Spurs, Alderweireld made 243 appearances and was largely a mainstay in the heart of defence.

Now 32, Alderweireld has put pen to paper to a three-year deal with Al Duhail and will be a like-for-like replacement for Medhi Benatia, the former Bayern Munich and Juventus centre-back who spent the last two seasons in Qatar.

Al Duhail manager Sabri Lamouchi appears to be looking to rejuvenate his squad after a disappointing campaign, which saw them finish 13 points behind champions Al Sadd in the Qatar Stars League title race, while they also suffered an embarrassing group-stage exit in the AFC Champions League back in April.
