REPORT: DAVID ALABA SET TO SIGN FIVE YEAR DEAL WITH REAL MADRID

Amid all the chaos today of the proposed (and completely and utterly failed) Super League, a report from Sky broke that David Alaba has agreed to a five-year contract with Real Madrid that would see him join Los Blancos this summer, and remain with the club until 2026.

The same report also stated that the versatile Austrian defender is no longer interested in joining FC Barcelona.

Real Madrid have a history of leaking or announcing deals right after a bad situation, in order to provide fans with a distraction to other problems. This may or may not be that. Either way, it’s not much of a distraction from the real embarrassment the club suffered publicly as the Super League fell apart.

Should Alaba sign, it will be interesting to see what happens with the Sergio Ramos contract negotiations as a domino of this move. Will Ramos and Nacho both stay with the club?

LOANEE CRAIG DAWSON TO JOIN WESTHAM ON A PERMANENT DEAL

West Ham have announced that their on-loan defender Craig Dawson will join the club on a permanent deal from Watford at the end of the season.

The 30-year-old moved to the Hammers on loan in October and has scored three goals in 15 Premier League appearances this term.

He will remain at London Stadium until the summer of 2023.

“Coming to West Ham has been a great move for myself, and it is a privilege to play for a club with such rooted traditions,” Dawson told West Ham’s website.

“The squad has a real togetherness, team spirit and great quality. I’m excited for what my future at the club may hold and the potential for what we as a club can go on to achieve.”

West Ham are in contention for Champions League qualification and sit fourth in the table following Monday’s 3-2 win at Wolves.

Dawson, who played for Rochdale, West Brom and Bolton earlier in his career, had to wait until late December for his Hammers debut but has since been ever-present in the top flight.

Manager David Moyes said: “Craig’s performances, attitude and the impact he’s had demonstrate why he deserves a permanent deal.

“He had to be patient but he’s come in and grabbed his opportunity with both hands. We are always looking to improve the squad and Craig joining us permanently certainly does that.”

EMILIANO SALA’S FAMILY TO TAKE LEGAL ACTION OVER FOOTBALLER’S DEATH IN PLANE CRASH

Emiliano Sala’s family are taking legal action against Cardiff City and French club Nantes after the Argentine footballer died in a plane crash two years ago, British media have reported.

A single-engine plane carrying Sala from Nantes to his new team Cardiff crashed on January 21st, 2019 in the English Channel. He never played for the Welsh side who bought him for a club record £15 million (€17.5 million).

The wreckage was found nearly two weeks later following a privately-funded underwater search and the 28-year-old’s body was recovered three days later. The body of the plane’s pilot David Ibbotson was not found.

Thirteen defendants were named, but proceedings will be delayed with David Henderson, who allegedly arranged the flight, set to stand trial in October.

“The family of Emiliano Sala are asking the coroner to fix the inquest date when she reviews matters, with a date soon after the trial of David Henderson, which has been fixed for 18th October 2021,” their lawyer Daniel Machover was quoted as saying.

“In the meantime, in order to protect their legal rights and remedies arising from Emiliano’s untimely death, the family have commenced civil proceedings in the high court, but will seek agreement to stay those proceedings pending the outcome of the inquest.”

An official investigation by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch revealed the plane crashed after the pilot lost control and the aircraft broke up while flying too fast.

CHELSEA MANAGER THOMAS TUCHEL ADMITS HE TRIED TO SIGN BRUNO FERNANDES

Thomas Tuchel has confessed he tried to sign Bruno Fernandes when he was head coach of Paris Saint-Germain.

The Chelsea manager takes on the Portuguese playmaker and Manchester United on Sunday but things could have been very different.

PSG’s sporting director made Tuchel aware of Fernandes and his qualities at Sporting Lisbon and the club fought hard to get him.

However, Fernandes sealed a move to United where he’s gone on to have an incredible impact – scoring 22 goals and assisting 13 in 38 appearances this season.

“My first sporting director in Paris was Antero Henrique, who is Portuguese,” said Tuchel.

“He knew Bruno very, very well. He fought hard to have a connection to him and to bring him to our team because he was a big personality for Sporting.

“An effective goalscorer, and an effective guy to make the other players around him dangerous.

“It was during my first year in Paris. We watched more and more games about him. We followed him and tried to be in touch with him to make it happen.

“He went another way. It’s bad for us, eh, that we have to play against him?”

Speaking about the impact Fernandes has made since joining a year ago, Tuchel added: “The impact he has since he arrived in Man United is indescribable. Unbelievable.

“Coming from Portugal — stepping in here, one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League, the strongest league in Europe, and to have this kind of impact, I have nothing but the biggest respect for this guy.

“He’s outstanding. He’s one of the best attacking midfielders in the world.

“He has a huge impact. He has such a big influence on their game, on their attacking game.

“It is key to defend against him, to be around him, to be close to him.”

DAVID ALABA ANNOUNCES DEPARTURE FROM BAYERN MUNICH AT THE END OF SEASON

David Alaba has announced he will leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season.

The 28-year-old has spent the last decade with the Bundesliga champions and played a key role in their Champions League success in August.

After discussions with the club over a new deal, the Austria international has decided against extending his current terms and will become a free agent in the summer.

In a press conference, Alaba said: “I have made the decision to leave Bayern at the end of this season and try something new.

“It obviously wasn’t an easy decision – I’ve been here for 13 years and the club means a lot to me.

“I haven’t decided where I’m going next.”

Alaba, linked with a move to Real Madrid, started his career with Austria Wien before he made the move to Germany in 2008.

During a glittering spell at the Allianz Arena, he has won 24 trophies and Bayern remain on course to secure another Bundesliga title this season while they have progressed into the Champions League knockout stage.

GUARDIOLA SAYS THERE WON’T BE JANUARY SIGNINGS AT CITY THIS SEASON.

Pep Guardiola has said Manchester City will not be making any new signings in the January transfer window.

After a slow start to the season, City have hit form in recent weeks and have climbed to second in the Premier League after a run of five successive wins.

Their growing momentum has also seen them reach the final of the Carabao Cup, the fourth round of the FA Cup and the last 16 of the Champions League.

The only notable area of weakness this term has been at centre forward, with both Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus missing a large number of games due to injuries and coronavirus-related self-isolation.

With no specialist senior back-up, Guardiola’s alternatives have been deploying winger Ferran Torres as a makeshift striker, Kevin De Bruyne or Raheem Sterling as ‘false nines’ or giving a chance to 17-year-old Liam Delap.

But Guardiola told beIN Sports: “We will not sign any deal during the winter transfer market. We did not discuss this, but we will end the season with the players that we have now.”

Guardiola accepts there have been times when the lack of a centre forward has been noticeable, but he is convinced there is enough quality in the squad to ensure it is not a major issue.

This is one of our ways,” he said. “There were matches where we needed an attacker but at that time two of them were injured.

“One had been injured for a long time – Sergio Aguero. The other two had the coronavirus.

“That’s why we sometimes play in this way, other times we are forced to do that because of a pressing need.

“It’s an alternative plan, which we can rely on given the talents we have in the various positions.”

MESUT OZIL SIGNS FOR FENERBAHCE FROM ARSENAL.

Mesut Ozil has officially confirmed his move to Fenerbahce, bringing to an end his topsy-turvy seven-and-a-half year stay at Arsenal.

The 32-year-old, who had not featured for Arsenal since March 7, joins the Turkish club on a free transfer after his £350,000-a-week Gunners contract was terminated.

While the news has not yet been officially confirmed by either club, Ozil has now officially spoken out about the move, admitting he is ‘very excited’ in an interview with Turkish television channel NTV, also confirming that he will arrive in Istanbul on Monday morning.

‘I am a Fenerbahce fan. That is why I am very happy to be coming to Turkey with Fenerbahce,’ Ozil said. ‘I’m very excited. God gave me the chance to wear this jersey as a Fenerbahce fan. God willing, I will carry it with honour and do everything I can for the team,’ he added.

‘Of course, I’m missing a few matches. I haven’t played in a match in a while, but I am physically fit, I have no issues,’ he said, adding he had been training with the first team at Arsenal during his time off the pitch.

It brings to an end Ozil’s long and controversial spell in north London, where he won three FA Cups and one Community Shield following his arrival in a then club-record £42.5million deal from Real Madrid under Arsene Wenger.

The 2014 World Cup winner with Germany has not featured competitively for the Gunners in more than 10 months, with his last appearance coming in March’s 1-0 win against West Ham when he assisted Alexandre Lacazette.

Ozil leaves Arsenal having played 254 matches for the club, scoring 44 goals and recording 77 assists in more than seven years.

He was named the club’s Player of the Season in 2015-16, when they finished second in the Premier League to Leicester City.

Ozil was also named the PFA Fans’ Player of the Month on three separate occasions in 2015.

The playmaker was involved in the 2014 FA Cup final victory against Hull City, which ended Arsenal’s nine-year trophy drought, as well as when they defended their Cup crown against Villa a year later.

He also played a part in the Gunners’ Cup triumph over Chelsea in 2017, but came up short against the same opponents in the Europa League final two years later.

Ozil also played 90 minutes in the 2018 EFL Cup final loss to Manchester City.

However, since signing a new £350,000 deal in January 2018, making him the highest-paid player at the club, he struggled to hit top form once Arsene Wenger left the club that summer.

He had a somewhat up-and-down relationship with Unai Emery – yet seemed rejuvenated in the first two months of Mikel Arteta’s reign at the Emirates.

But he has not played post-lockdown – and has only been involved in two matchday squads, both back in June – and has recently taken to social media to display his affection for Arsenal alongside his disappointment at not being involved.

He was not selected in either the Premier League or the Europa League squads this season yet has continued to train with the first team.

Reports claim Ozil was set to earn around £7million at the Emirates Stadium between now and the end of the current campaign, but an early termination was agreed.

Ozil has also recently spoken of his affection for Fenerbahce during a Twitter Q&A.

OZIL SET TO LEAVE ARSENAL FOR FENERBAHCE AFTER AGREEING TO END CONTRACT WITH LONDONERS.

Mesut Ozil’s seven and a half year stay at Arsenal is set to end after the two parties reached an agreement in principle to release him from his contract.

The 32-year-old has not played for the Gunners since March and his £350,000-a-week deal was set to expire at the end of the current season.

The PA news agency understands, however, that both parties have all-but agreed to tear up the final months of his contract.

Ozil had been expected to leave in the January transfer window and would be able to sign for another club as a free agent should the final few details be ironed out smoothly.

Major League Soccer’s DC United had been strongly linked with a move for the former Germany international but Fenerbahce are now believed to be leading the race to sign Ozil.

Having started the first 10 games under Mikel Arteta following his appointment in December 2019, Ozil has not featured since a 1-0 win over West Ham before the coronavirus pandemic saw football grind to a halt.

He was omitted from Arsenal’s Premier League and Europa League squads, with Arteta and technical director Edu insisting the decision to do so was down to footballing reasons.

Ozil was criticised in some quarters when he refused to take a pay-cut during the summer, with no football being played and Arsenal looking to balance the books.

He had signed his current deal in January 2018 to become the highest-paid player in the club’s history but now looks set to depart on a free.
