ARNE SLOT SAYS CITY’S LOSS DID NOT GIVE LIVERPOOL AN EXTRA EDGE

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot insisted his Premier League leaders needed no motivation from Manchester City’s defeat at Brighton to beat Aston Villa and take a five-point lead into the international break.

A sense of opportunity swept through Anfield just before kick-off following news of the defending champions’ loss on the south coast but Slot said that was not the driving factor behind their 2-0 win – the 15th victory in 17 games this season.

“I cannot tell what the fans felt, I can only say if my players need extra motivation that would not be a good idea,” said the Dutchman.

“If you play at Anfield in front of your own fans you should only be motivated. You should not need motivation from another match.”

Liverpool’s 28 points from 11 matches has been bettered only once in the last 34 seasons, in 2019-20 when they had 31 points at the same stage and went on to win the league comfortably.

Having beaten Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday to make it four wins from four in the Champions League, just days after coming from behind to defeat Brighton, it has been a significant week in Slot’s short Anfield career.

But he is not getting carried away by his rivals’ slip-ups as he is aware fortunes can quickly change.

“It was definitely a big week but every game is,” he added.
“Hopefully we will have a lot of these weeks to come. We are trying to compete for the league, for the Champions League and for the cups as well.
“We also know it is a long season as well and the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and City are capable of winning so many games in 17 as we did.”

The only downside to the victory, secured by goals from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah, was a hamstring injury to Trent Alexander-Arnold which is likely to rule him out of England’s forthcoming Nations League matches.

“That is difficult to say how serious it is but it is always a serious if a player goes out in the first half,” said Slot.

“He asked for it because he felt something, so that is first of all not a good sign.

“It is always difficult so close after the game to tell you exactly what it is but let’s wait and see.

“I would be surprised if we will see him playing for the England national team this week but hopefully he can.”

For the first time Villa have lost four successive matches under manager Unai Emery.

“Obviously the result is not good but how we played I am confident. I am confident because I think we are in the right way after this match,” he said.

“We wanted to get points but today against Liverpool we can accept the result because they are really feeling strong at home and not really dominating and creating chances against us.

“They won and we accept it.”

Villa had two penalty appeals in the second half, one for a shirt pull on Pau Torres and another for a foul on the defender.

“For me it was clearly a penalty because he pulled the shirt of Pau Torres. I know that in Europe this is a penalty, but here in England they want to use VAR,” he said.

“In this situation it was clear. I always respect the decisions of referees and I accept it, but for me, when I watched it, with VAR it was a clear penalty.

“It was a very important moment in the game because if we could have the chance to shoot the penalty, maybe the match would have been different.

“I accept the result and the referee’s decision (but) I don’t agree.”

BEN WHITE REPLACES ALEXANDER-ARNOLD IN ENGLAND SQUAD FOR EURO 2020

Brighton defender Ben White has been added to England’s Euro 2020 squad in place of the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The 23-year-old was selected by Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate to replace the Liverpool right-back, who was forced to withdraw from the 26-man party due to injury.

White made his debut in last week’s 1-0 friendly win over Austria and impressed as he started alongside Tyrone Mings in Sunday’s victory against Romania.

Alexander-Arnold was ruled out after suffering a thigh injury late on against Austria and Southgate took his time to decide which of his standby players would come in.

Everton defender Ben Godfrey and Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse were other options who both started the Romania game, while Jesse Lingard and Ollie Watkins were also on the standby list, but will now return home.

TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD LIMPS OUT OF ENGLAND EUROS WARM-UP WIN

Trent Alexander-Arnold looks in doubt for the Euros after limping off towards the end of the warm-up friendly win against Austria.

Alexander-Arnold suffered a thigh injury that Gareth Southgate admitted did not look good.

Playing in front of supporters for the first time in 18 months, the Three Lions got their Euro 2020 preparations off to a winning start against Austria at the Riverside Stadium in Middlesbrough.

England rode their luck at times but a first international goal to Bukayo Saka, 19, was enough to secure a 1-0 victory against the fellow Euro finalists.

With his selection in Southgate’s 26-man group one of the main talking points before the match, Alexander-Arnold, 22 – one of four right-backs in the squad – will remain in the spotlight after picking up a late injury.

“It looks like a thigh but we don’t know the extent at the moment,” the England manager said.

“Clearly, it’s not a good sign that he had to walk off and looked in some discomfort with it but we’ll know more in the next 24 to 48 hours.”

Southgate played down concerns over Jack Grealish, who only recently returned from a shin problem and was taken off in the second half.

Jordan Henderson had been due to play his first minutes for club or country since undergoing groin surgery in February, but the Liverpool captain remained on the bench against Austria.

“With Jack, we just felt that that was enough time,” Southgate said.

“I think you can see still a little bit of sharpness still coming and we didn’t want to overplay him through that period.

“With Jordan, we had hoped to involve him today. That was the original plan. This morning he wasn’t so happy with how he felt.

“We’ve scanned him just to be certain. There’s no problem on the scan so he’ll be able to resume training but we’ve taken a decision to leave him out of this game.”

Wednesday’s line-up is likely to be very different to the one against Croatia on June 13, given Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea players were all unavailable after their European final clash.

But the likes of Saka and Jude Bellingham, who made his first Three Lions start at just 17, impressed on the evening.

“I thought they were both excellent,” England manager Southgate said.

“They were as they’ve been since they’ve walked through the door, really, with us.

“Both in training and in the matches, they’ve played with confidence, they’ve played with freedom, they’ve played with maturity.

“I thought Bukayo right from the start linked the game really well. He received well on the line, he received well inside.

“He’s got a lovely ability to receive in that traffic in the middle of the field. It’s like a slippery eel getting away from those challenges.

“I thought his all-round game [was good] and he works defensively well for the team. Really pleased with him and for him to get the goal.

“And Jude, you can’t help but marvel at the performance of a boy that age, really.

“It’s a bit disrespectful [to call him a boy]. He’s a boy because he’s 17, but he’s not a boy, is he? He plays like a man.

“I would just say that he’s still, of course, learning the understanding. He’s probably running more than he needs to if anything. He got cramp towards the end.

“That efficiency that he can still learn but his ability to receive under pressure, his calmness on the ball, he competes, he wants to compete.

“Even in training sessions with us right from the start, he didn’t hold back and look at the senior players. He’s in there and he should be really proud of his first start.”

ALEXANDER-ARNOLD NETS LATE WINNER TO EDGE STUBBORN ASTON VILLA AT ANFIELD

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s superb stoppage-time goal helped Liverpool come from behind to beat Aston Villa 2-1 for a first home win since 16 December that boosted their hopes of a top-four finish.

Liverpool started strongly and Mohamed Salah had their best chance, but shot wide when through on goal.

Villa went ahead two minutes before half-time against the run of play, Ollie Watkins controlling John McGinn’s pass before firing beneath Alisson.

Salah drew Liverpool level on 57 minutes with their first goal from open play at Anfield in 765 minutes, nodding in after Emiliano Martinez had saved Andrew Robertson’s shot.

Trezeguet almost restored Villa’s lead but his shot hit a post, before he headed the rebound wide.

In added time, shortly after Martinez had saved spectacularly from Thiago, Alexander-Arnold curled the ball brilliantly into the far corner to win it.

By ending a run of six straight home defeats Liverpool go fourth on 52 points, while Villa are 10th on 44 points.

ARNOLD, MANE STAR AS LIVERPOOL EDGE SPURS

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Sadio Mane each claimed a goal and an assist as Liverpool recorded a 3-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur to go fourth in the table.

Spurs thought they had made the breakthrough on four minutes, but Son Heung-min’s goal was overturned for offside following a review by the Video Assistant Referee.

Liverpool took the lead in first-half stoppage time as Mane squared for Roberto Firmino to tap in his fifth goal in six matches versus Spurs.

Alexander-Arnold made it 2-0 on 47 minutes, fizzing a shot into the far corner after Hugo Lloris could only parry Mane’s shot into his path.

Spurs, who took Harry Kane off with a double-ankle injury at half-time, responded immediately as Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg scored with a powerful strike.

Mohamed Salah had a 56th-minute goal also overturned for a handball in the build-up, before Liverpool restored their two-goal lead.

Alexander-Arnold’s deep delivery took a touch off Joe Rodon and fell invitingly for Mane to hammer into the roof of the net.

Liverpool have 37 points, four behind leaders Manchester City, who have a match in hand.

Spurs lie sixth with 33 points.
