UCL: SALAH, MANE ON TARGET AS LIVERPOOL BEAT LEIPZIG

Liverpool put their domestic struggles to one side as they gained the upper hand in their Champions League last-16 tie against RB Leipzig with a 2-0 victory in the first leg in Budapest.

Three successive Premier League defeats led to Reds manager Jurgen Klopp conceding their title defence is over, but they have taken a giant stride towards the quarter-finals of Europe’s premier club competition.

Both Liverpool goals came via Leipzig errors, with Mohamed Salah latching on to a woeful back pass by Marcel Sabitzer to slot home in the 53rd minute, and Sadio Mane doing likewise five minutes later after Nordi Mukiele’s slip-up.

The nominal visitors – this game had to take place in the Hungarian capital because of restrictions on travel into Germany due to coronavirus – were given a let-off early on when Dani Olmo headed against a post.

Substitute Hwang Hee-chan put wide late on but a makeshift Liverpool defence low on confidence kept only the team’s second clean sheet in their last 11 matches against a side that reached the Champions League semi-finals last term.

Leipzig had reached this stage by eliminating Manchester United, but a side that has the best home record in this season’s Bundesliga looked uncomfortable away from their Red Bull Arena fortress.

UCL: MBAPPE SCORES HATRICK AS PSG THRASH BARCELONA

Paris St Germain’s Kylian Mbappe scored a stunning hat-trick as his side overcame the absence of Neymar to thrash Barcelona 4-1 away in their Champions League last-16 first leg on Tuesday to move within full view of the quarter-finals.

Lionel Messi had blasted Barca ahead with a penalty in the first half but Mbappe pulled the French champions level with a classy piece of control and finishing to complete a flowing team move also involving Marco Verratti and Layvin Kurzawa.

Mbappe, who had not scored in the Champions League knockouts for two years before Tuesday, smashed PSG into the lead in the 65th minute while Moise Kean took advantage of some woeful Barca marking to head in a third goal for the visitors in the 70th.

The insatiable Mbappe looked hungry for more though and after being denied his third goal by Barca keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, he completed his treble in the 85th minute by curling the ball past the German into the top corner.

Barca overcame a 4-0 defeat to PSG in a last-16 first leg in 2017 by winning the second leg at home 6-1 and the Catalans now face another daunting task in turning this tie around when they visit the Parc des Princes on March 10th.

Barcelona went into the game crowing from a run of seven La Liga wins in a row but, while they were boosted by the return of serial winner Gerard Pique in defence after nearly three months out, they were blown away by Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Mauro Icardi should have given last year’s runners-up the lead when he strolled through on goal but the Argentine scuffed his shot and Barca’s teenage midfielder Pedri recovered to clear.

Barca then got a lucky break when Frenkie de Jong was accidentally tripped by Layvin Kurzawa and Messi smashed his penalty beyond former Real Madrid keeper Keylor Navas to score a fourth goal in this season’s competition, all from spot-kicks.

PSG responded emphatically with their classy team goal after 32 minutes and should have gone ahead before the break when Kurzawa was thwarted by a fingertip save from Ter Stegen and Icardi headed just wide from a corner.

Barca had their moments too, Antoine Griezmann showing exceptional pace to sprint towards goal from the halfway line but landing his shot just wide of the far post.

The second half belonged to PSG though, and no player symbolised their confidence better than the resplendent Mbappe, who became the first player to score a visiting hat-trick at the Camp Nou since Andriy Shevchenko in 1997.

Neymar Doubtful For PSG – Barcelona Champions League Clash

Neymar is in danger of missing Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League last-16 first leg against former club Barcelona after suffering a groin injury in Wednesday’s Coupe de France win over Caen.

The Ligue 1 champions go to the Camp Nou on Tuesday, before facing Barça in the return in Paris on 10 March.

Neymar was forced off shortly before the hour mark against Caen after a heavy challenge by defender Steeve Yago.

Having immediately asked to be brought off, the Neymar was able to walk off the field and headed straight down the tunnel at the Stade Michel d’Ornano.

If his absence from the first leg against the Catalan giants is confirmed, the 29-year-old would be the second major PSG player to be ruled out in the run-up to the tie, after Ángel di María was sidelined by a thigh injury suffered in the 3-0 Ligue 1 victory over Nimes a week ago.

He will undergo tests on Thursday to ascertain the exact extent of his injury.

Speaking to reporters post-match, PSG head coach Mauricio Pochettino said: “It’s difficult to know how bad the injury is right now. We’ll see tomorrow. It’s difficult to say anything about it at the moment. I need more information […]. It’s an adductor problem.”

UCL: CHELSEA’S AWAY GAME AGAINST ATLETICO MADRID MOVED TO BUCHAREST

Chelsea’s away Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid will now take place in Bucharest due to coronavirus travel concerns.

The UK is implementing strict Covid-19 quarantine rules around people returning from Spain, meaning the first leg of the last-16 tie will be staged at the Arena Nationala in the Romanian capital.

“UEFA has confirmed that Chelsea’s Champions League round-of-16 first-leg match away against Atletico Madrid will now be played at the Arena Nationala in Bucharest in Romania,” a Chelsea statement read.

“The date of the match, Tuesday, February 23, and the kick-off (8pm UK time) will remain the same.

“The second leg at Stamford Bridge is on Wednesday, March 17 at 8pm.”

Spain is on a ‘red list’ of countries drawn up by the UK Government.

The first legs of Liverpool and Manchester City’s Champions League ties against RB Leipzig and Borussia Monchengladbach have been moved to Budapest, while Arsenal and Manchester United have seen the first legs of their Europa League last-32 clashes moved to Rome and Turin, respectively.

UCL: MAN CITY’S CLASH WITH BORRUSIA MONCHEGLADBACH MOVED TO BUDAPEST.

Manchester City’s Champions League tie away to Borussia Monchengladbach will be played in Budapest due to travel restrictions imposed amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Premier League leaders will follow Liverpool in travelling to the Hungarian capital to face German opposition, with City’s round-of-16 first-leg match on February 24 to be played at the Puskas Arena.

Liverpool are due to play RB Leipzig at the same venue eight days earlier.

A ban on foreign nationals arriving into Germany is due to expire on February 17, a day after Liverpool’s match, but the restrictions are expected to be extended, leading Gladbach to seek alternatives for their own fixture.

A UEFA statement said: “UEFA can confirm that the UEFA Champions League round-of-16 first-leg match between Borussia VfL 1900 Monchengladbach and Manchester City FC will now take place at the Puskas Arena in Budapest.

“The date of the match (24 February 2021) and kick-off time (21:00CET) will remain the same.

“UEFA would like to thank Borussia VfL 1900 Monchengladbach and Manchester City FC for their close cooperation and support, as well as the Hungarian Football Federation for their assistance and agreeing to host the match in question.”

Leipzig are due at Anfield for their return leg on March 10, while Gladbach are scheduled to travel to the Etihad Stadium on March 16.

LIVERPOOL TO BE DENIED PLAYING LEIPZIG UCL TIE IN GERMANY

Liverpool will not be allowed to play their Champions League round of 16 tie against RB Leipzig in Germany after being denied entry to the country.

The German government has banned all arrivals from countries affected by new coronavirus variants until February 17, the day after Liverpool were due in Leipzig, and an application for special permission for them to travel has been denied.

A statement from the German interior ministry, reported in local media, said: “The federal police has told the RB Leipzig club today that the circumstances of the given case do not meet the requirements for an exemption.”

UEFA has remained in touch with both clubs and the German Football Association, which has in turn been in contact with the German government.

Under such circumstances, Champions League regulations allow for a match to be moved to a neutral venue or for fixtures to be reversed.

However, the latter is not considered an option as Leipzig players would need to quarantine for 10 days upon their return from Liverpool under the current rules.

As it stands, the second leg is scheduled to take place at Anfield on March 10, by which point it is hoped restrictions will have been eased.

UEFA’s regulations put the onus on Leipzig to put forward proposals for an alternative venue and pay the associated costs of rearranging the game.

The club has until February 8 to come up with a solution or they could run the risk of a 3-0 forfeit.

A delay is also a possibility, with UEFA having said that all last-16 games must have been decided by April 2.

UCL DRAW: BARCA FACE PSG, CHAMPIONS BAYERN DRAW LAZIO IN ROUND OF 16 FIXTURES.

Barcelona were drawn against Paris Saint-Germain in the standout tie of the Champions League round of 16, which took place on Monday at 11 a.m. GMT

The clash means that, if fit, Neymar will return to Camp Nou. The last time these teams met in the competition produced one of the most memorable matches in Champions League history as Barca — inspired by Neymar — won the round-of-16 second-leg clash 6-1 to recover from a 4-0 first-leg defeat. Neymar left in the summer of 2017, and this will be his first return.

Cristiano Ronaldo will make a return to Portugal as Juventus were drawn with Porto — a side he has mixed memories of playing against in the competition.

In 2004, his Manchester United side were eliminated by Porto after a draw at Old Trafford, which sparked Jose Mourinho’s famous run down the Old Trafford touchline. However, five years later, Ronaldo scored a stunning goal that decided their quarterfinal clash, and he was awarded the Puskas Award for it.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard will face Diego Simeone as his side were paired with Atletico Madrid in a repeat of the 2014 semifinal.

Holders Bayern Munich were drawn against Lazio, who were unbeaten in the group phase and qualified for the knockout stages for the first time in 20 years, while Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp returns to Germany to face RB Leipzig.

Manchester City were drawn against Borussia Monchengladbach, while Real Madrid will face Atalanta. Europa League winners Sevilla were paired against Borussia Dortmund. The two-legged ties will be played starting Feb. 16.

PSG-ISTANBUL BASAKSEHIR GAME SUSPENDED FOLLOWING ALLEGED RACIST TALK BY FOURTH OFFICIAL.

Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League game with Istanbul Basaksehir was suspended on Tuesday and will be completed a day late after both sets of players walked off in protest amid allegations of racism by one of the match officials, in an unprecedented incident in European football’s elite club competition.

The row erupted after Basaksehir assistant coach Pierre Webo, the former Cameroon international, was shown a red card during a fierce row on the touchline with staff from the Turkish club accusing the fourth official, Sebastian Coltescu, of using a racist term.

That led to the game at the Parc des Princes — which started at 9:00 pm local time (2000 GMT) – stopping in the 14th minute while still goalless, with the players walking off around 10 minutes later.

In a statement late on Tuesday UEFA promised to open a “thorough investigation” into the incidents and confirmed the match would restart at 1755 GMT on Wednesday from where it stopped.

European football’s governing body said it had “decided on an exceptional basis to have the remaining minutes of the match played (Wednesday) with a new team of match officials.”

UEFA’s regulations for the Champions League stipulate that, normally, any team refusing to play must forfeit the game and also faces a fine of 250,000 euros ($303,000).

Danny Makkelie of the Netherlands was named as the referee to take over the remainder of the game, with the rest of his team of officials from the Netherlands and Poland.

Television microphones picked up a furious Webo repeatedly asking why a racist term had been used to describe him.

The referee, Ovidiu Hategan, his two assistants and fourth official Coltescu were all from Romania.

In the exchange in question, heard on television and translated by an AFP journalist, Coltescu said: “The black one over there. This is not possible. Go and identify him. That guy, the black one.”

Basaksehir’s Senegal international striker Demba Ba, among the substitutes for the away side, could be clearly heard on television remonstrating with the official, saying in English: “When you mention a white guy, you never say ‘this white guy’, you just say ‘this guy’, so why when you mention a black guy do you say ‘this black guy?'”

The incident sparked a reaction from Turkey’s President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is understood to be closely linked to the owners of the club.

He tweeted to say: “I strongly condemn the racist remarks made to Pierre Webo, member of the Basaksehir technical staff, and am convinced UEFA will take the necessary measures”.

Meanwhile, the president of the Turkish champions said his side refused to restart the game as long as the fourth official was still involved.

“The fourth official used the word ‘negro’ in front of everybody. If the fourth official is removed from the pitch, then we will restart,” Göksel Gümüsdag told Turkish television channel TRT Spor.

Basaksehir responded to the incidents by tweeting “NO TO RACISM #Respect”, along with a photo of UEFA’s anti-racism logo.

The message was retweeted by PSG, who themselves later tweeted their support on their English-language feed.

“All forms of racism go against the values held by Paris Saint-Germain, the club’s Chairman, staff and players,” the French champions said.

Despite the interruption of the match, being played behind closed doors because of the coronavirus pandemic, PSG qualified for the last 16 from Group H after RB Leipzig beat Manchester United 3-2 in Germany.

However, PSG will need to win the game in order to finish on top of the group above Leipzig and thereby secure a potentially easier draw in the next round.

Basaksehir, who are competing in the Champions League group stage for the first time, are already eliminated and will finish bottom.

RB LEIPZIG SEND MAN UNITED OUT OF UCL WITH SHOCKING WIN.

RB Leipzig sent Manchester United packing from the Champions League with a huge 3-2 win that sees them into the knockout rounds of the Champions League from Group H.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team came into the match needing at least a draw to advance to the round of 16, but were behind within minutes of kickoff after Angelino beat David De Gea with a fine finish at the far post on a counter-attack.

The Bundesliga side doubled their lead shortly after with Angelino becoming provider this time, crossing the ball for Amadou Haidara to smash home a volley and stake Leipzig to a 2-0 lead they would take into the dressing room at half-time.

After the match, Solskjaer told BT Sport: “We started too late. Great spirit and comeback again. It’s different to the Premier League, you can’t give a team a three-goal lead and expect to come back. We were unlucky towards the end and you almost thought it was in at the last minute there.

“Of course you can’t say we were good enough, we weren’t. In a difficult group of course, the big defeat for us was the one away to Istanbul – that’s where we lost the points we should have had.”

United, despite the return of Luke Shaw and keeper De Gea, were vulnerable at the back and had to change their system several times in a desperate effort to stop the onslaught. Their sole threat in the first half came from Mason Greenwood, who had their only shot on target.

Paul Pogba, who had been left on the bench to start the match, came on in the 60th minute for Nemanja Matic as Solskjaer tried to find a way for his team to get back in the match.

Despite the substitution, it was Leipzig who would score again to take a three-goal lead when Justin Kluivert pounced on a loose ball just out of De Gea’s reach and chipped the keeper to pile on to United’s woe.

Looking like they were on their way out of the Champions League, United struck twice in the span of minutes with a Bruno Fernandes penalty and a Pogba header to cut Leipzig’s lead to 3-2.

However, the comeback fell short meaning RB Leipzig are through to the round of 16, while Manchester United were eliminated from the competition.

Solskjaer added: “Today we were close but we knew we had to defend crosses and balls into the box and we just couldn’t clear them.

“As a footballer you can’t feel sorry for yourself. You feel sorry for a few minutes tonight and then we focus on a massive game on Saturday.”

Paris Saint-Germain, whose match on Tuesday was cut short due to an incident on the sidelines, are also through from Group H regardless of the outcome of their match against Istanbul Basaksehir due to a superior head-to-head record against United.

Leipzig could still top the group on 12 points pending the outcome of PSG’s match, which will be resumed on Wednesday at 12:55 p.m. ET in the 13th minute. The Parisians would win the group if they beat Basaksehir.

SEVILLA 0-4 CHELSEA: GIROUD SCORES ALL FOUR AS BLUES THRASH SEVILLA IN SPAIN

Olivier Giroud scored four goals as Chelsea beat Sevilla 4-0 to secure top spot in Champions League Group E on Wednesday night.

Christian Pulisic was back in the XI for Frank Lampard, following his first appearance as a substitute in a 0-0 Premier League draw with Tottenham Hotspur since returning from an injury layoff.

Kai Havertz teed up Giroud for an early Chelsea strike with the France forward curling a left-footed shot past Alfonso Pastor as he was falling away from the goal.

Chances were hard to come by for both teams throughout the remainder of the first half as Chelsea took their 1-0 lead into the dressing room.

Giroud doubled his tally and Chelsea’s lead nine minutes into the second half, chipping the ball over Pastor after being played in by Mateo Kovacic.

A glancing header from a N’Golo Kante cross gave Giroud his third of the match to give Chelsea some breathing room as they saw out their group-topping win with one match left to play.

Giroud scored his fourth from the penalty spot, sending Pastor the wrong way after Sergio Gomez had taken him down in the area as the two ran onto a whipped in cross.

The result left Chelsea with 13 points from five games, three ahead of second-placed Sevilla with a better head-to-head record against the Spanish side after their 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge in the reverse fixture.
