BAYER LEVERKUSEN ENDS RANGERS EUROPA DREAM.

There was no redemption in the Rhineland as Rangers’ Europa League campaign was finally ended by a 1-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.

Steven Gerrard’s team were made to wait five months for another shot at the German giants but the damage done in March’s 3-1 first-leg defeat at Ibrox proved too much to recover.

Peter Bosz’ impressive Bundesliga outfit will now march into Monday’s quarter-final shootout with Inter Milan in nearby Dusseldorf after Moussa Diaby’s early second-half strike sealed a 4-1 aggregate triumph.

The coronavirus crisis may have put the second leg at the Bay Arena on ice for almost 150 days but Leverkusen remained red hot.

Gerrard would have loved to have had the option of spicing up his line-up with summer recruits Leon Balogun, Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten but all three were ineligible.

Instead he opted to give Brandon Barker his chance following an impressive pre-season campaign, while Filip Helander’s fitness levels were also put to the test as the defender came in for the first time since injuring his foot in December’s Betfred Cup final.

Rangers’ game plan was clear. Fall back into the trusty defensive shape which has served them so well through their previous 17 games of this 13-month European campaign before using Barker and Ryan Kent’s pace to spring on the counter.

They had four early chances to test that ploy out but on each occasion a final pass let them down.

The Light Blues needed to be utterly ruthless if they were to grab the three away goals required to overturn the tie but they went in at half-time just grateful that their slick hosts had been in a forgiving mood.

Helander failed to deal with a cross from Lars Bender on 16 minutes and £70million-rated Chelsea target Kai Havertz almost made the Swede pay as he rattled a first-time strike off Allan McGregor’s bar.

Havertz’s quality was clear as he glided across the pitch but he should have netted seven minutes later as Exequiel Palacios sent the playmaker racing through a static Gers defence, only for the 21-year-old to tug wide.

Helander, looking strong despite eight months out, was smarter on his feet two minutes before the break as he leapt in to block at Florian Wirtz’s feet after Leverkusen had hit Rangers on a lightning quick counter-attack.

With sweltering 32 degree heat at kick-off, it had been a taxing first 45 minutes for the Scots as Leverkusen dominated with 70 per cent possession.

The Colombian made way for Greg Stewart with quarter of an hour left following a thoroughly ineffective display which just about summed up his 2020 so far.

The full-time whistle brought the curtain down on a campaign from which Gers can still take huge pride after battling through to the last 16 from the first round of qualifiers.

But Gerrard will not have to wait long to see his team back testing themselves in continental action, with Rangers due to enter the new season’s qualifiers on 17 September.

SEVILLA 2-0 ROMA: EUROPA LEAGUE MASTERS BOOK QUARTER FINAL PLACE IN GRAND STYLE.

Despite the global pandemic drastically hampering their European plans, it seems nobody knows how to do the Europa League better than Sevilla.

The Spanish giants eased themselves back into familiar territory with an impressive victory over Italian royalty Roma on Thursday evening, taking victory in the one-off fixture to book their place in the next round.

Sergio Reguilon opened the scoring after just 20-minutes played for Sevilla, as Julen Lopetegui’s side wasted no time in imposing themselves on the contest.

The style was turned on as full-back Reguilon broke the deadlock in spectacular style, taking the ball from Ever Banega before gliding past Gianluci Mancini and rifling a distance effort past helpless goalkeeper Pau Lopez.

Echoing voices could be heard reverberating around the MSV-Arena in Duisburg, Germany, as the two sides battled hard to claw an advantage in the unusual fixture.

But it was Sevilla who would strike the next blow, doubling their lead shortly after the half-time interval.

Youssef En-Nesyri was on hand to turn in from close range, following a swift section of build-up and a pinpoint fizzing cross from Lucas Ocampos.

UEFA CONFIRM VENUE FOR UNITED VS LASK EUROPA RETURN LEG GAME

Manchester United will play the second leg of their last-16 Europa League tie with LASK Linz at Old Trafford, UEFA have confirmed.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side won 5-0 in Austria the day before UEFA halted the competition as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak across Europe.

Plans have since been unveiled to finish the Europa League in a final eight tournament in Germany in August, with quarter-finals, semi-final and final all played over one leg.

But United will keep home advantage for the second leg of their tie with the side who finished second in the Austrian Bundesliga and they will be near certainties to complete the job and ensure they make the last eight of the Europa League, with the draw for the competition to be staged tomorrow.

UEFA have confirmed the remaining ties in the Europa League and the Champions League will be played at home venues, as long as that league is back up and running and there are no travel restrictions in place.

A UEFA statement said: “Consistent with the principle of sporting fairness and considering that current conditions – all clubs due to play at home the return leg of the Round of 16 are currently playing the remaining matches of their domestic leagues in their own stadiums and that travelling is possible without restrictions for the visiting clubs – the UEFA Executive Committee decided that the remaining UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League Round of 16 second-leg matches will be played at the home teams’ stadiums.

“As already communicated in June, the ties FC Internazionale Milano v Getafe CF and Sevilla FC v AS Roma, whose first leg was also postponed, will be played as a single leg in Germany.

“UEFA will continue to monitor the situation and reserves the right to reassign any such matches to the venues of the final tournament of the relevant competition should new events occur that would make it impossible to play one or more matches at the original venues.

“The respective fixture lists will be communicated after tomorrow’s draws at UEFA’s headquarters in Nyon.”
