WESTHAM TO APPEAL FABIAN BALBUENA’S CONTROVERSIAL RED CARD

West Ham are to appeal the controversial red card shown to defender Fabian Balbuena against Chelsea on Saturday.

Balbuena was sent off by referee Chris Kavanagh after he caught Blues full-back Ben Chilwell with his studs as he cleared the ball upfield.

Kavanagh did not initially blow for a foul but the incident was brought to his attention by VAR.

The official reviewed the footage on the pitchside monitor and then decided to show a straight red card to the Paraguayan centre-back.

Hammers manager David Moyes called the decision “rank, rotten” after his side’s 1-0 defeat by their top-four rivals.

TUCHEL HAPPY WITH TIMO WERNER’S PERFORMANCE AFTER WESTHAM VICTORY

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel heaped praise on Timo Werner after the forward netted the winning goal in the Premier League clash against West Ham United on Saturday.

The Blues were the dominant side in the London derby against the Hammers, and they scored the only goal of the game in the 43rd minute through Werner.

Ben Chilwell provided a perfect defence splitting cross in the box for the German, who had the simple job to convert from a few yards out.

Shortly after the interval, Werner should have doubled the club’s advantage, but somehow missed his target as his shot trickled wide of goal.

The Blues held on for a comfortable 1-0 triumph and following the game, Tuchel was pleased for Werner, but added that he needs to keep on scoring.

He told Chelseafc.com: “He needs to keep on scoring and catch the moment. He is quite often involved in our goals, even in the last weeks with fouls in the penalty area, or assists like against Man City. Nothing helps more than scoring goals.”

“I felt him very strong today from the start. He was very good at distributing the ball, dropping from the number nine position and keeping the ball for us. He had good timings in the deep runs behind the line. He was involved in many chances and half-chances.

“It was very nice he could score. He could have had a second one for sure, and after that he lost his confidence a bit and was a bit tired, but it was a good performance from him.”

Werner has had a mixed debut campaign with the Blues, but he has still registered 11 goals and 12 assists from 43 appearances in all competitions.

His goal against the Hammers was only his second in the league since the turn of the year. It ended his 12-match goal drought in all competitions.

It is clear that he is lacking confidence in front of goal at the moment, and he has been guilty of missing several clear-cut chances this term.

However, there have been positives as the German has been involved in creating chances for his teammates over the past few months.

The Blues’ win at the London Stadium sees them three points clear of West Ham United in the race for the final Champions League spot.

WERNER STRIKE HELP STRENGTHEN CHELSEA’S GRIP ON FOURTH SPOT

Timo Werner scored the only goal as Chelsea beat West Ham United to create a three-point gap over their opponents in the race for fourth.

Chelsea created the better of the first-half chances, Werner skewing over after only four minutes and Mason Mount forcing Lukasz Fabianski into a save.

Their persistence paid off two minutes before the break, when Ben Chilwell squared for Werner to score his first league goal since 15 February.

Werner missed a fantastic chance to double the lead 10 minutes after half-time, shooting wide from close range after Fabianski had parried Mount’s effort.

West Ham pushed for an equaliser, their best chance falling to Jesse Lingard, whose shot dropped narrowly wide.

Their hopes of a point were hit by Fabian Balbuena’s red card for a high challenge on Chilwell, awarded after a VAR review.

Chelsea stay fourth with 58 points, a place above West Ham with five matches to play.

JESSE LINGARD BRACE DOWN LEICESTER CITY DESPITE IHEANACHO’S LATE STRIKES

Jesse Lingard continued his fine form with two goals as West Ham United returned to the top four with a 3-2 win over Leicester City at London Stadium.

West Ham went ahead on 29 minutes with a fantastic first-time finish from Lingard, who swept in Vladimir Coufal’s cross on the half-volley from the edge of the penalty area.

Lingard scored again on 44 minutes, tapping into an empty net after Jarrod Bowen beat Kasper Schmeichel to the ball.

Bowen added the Hammers’ third when he turned in Tomas Soucek’s pass three minutes into the second half.

Kelechi Iheanacho set up a tense finale with two goals in the final 20 minutes.

First the Nigerian finished on the turn after being set up by Ricardo Pereira before he fired in from close range in stoppage time.

West Ham held on to return to fourth place on 55 points, a point and a position behind Leicester.

LOANEE CRAIG DAWSON TO JOIN WESTHAM ON A PERMANENT DEAL

West Ham have announced that their on-loan defender Craig Dawson will join the club on a permanent deal from Watford at the end of the season.

The 30-year-old moved to the Hammers on loan in October and has scored three goals in 15 Premier League appearances this term.

He will remain at London Stadium until the summer of 2023.

“Coming to West Ham has been a great move for myself, and it is a privilege to play for a club with such rooted traditions,” Dawson told West Ham’s website.

“The squad has a real togetherness, team spirit and great quality. I’m excited for what my future at the club may hold and the potential for what we as a club can go on to achieve.”

West Ham are in contention for Champions League qualification and sit fourth in the table following Monday’s 3-2 win at Wolves.

Dawson, who played for Rochdale, West Brom and Bolton earlier in his career, had to wait until late December for his Hammers debut but has since been ever-present in the top flight.

Manager David Moyes said: “Craig’s performances, attitude and the impact he’s had demonstrate why he deserves a permanent deal.

“He had to be patient but he’s come in and grabbed his opportunity with both hands. We are always looking to improve the squad and Craig joining us permanently certainly does that.”

JESSE LINGARD STARS AS WESTHAM EDGE WOLVES TO GO FOURTH

Jesse Lingard scored a superb solo goal and assisted another as West Ham United won 3-2 at Wolverhampton Wanderers to climb into the top four.

After Michail Antonio had a shot tipped on to the post by Rui Patricio, Wolves’ goalkeeper could do nothing as Lingard ran from his own half and gave West Ham a sixth-minute lead.

Pablo Fornals doubled West Ham’s advantage on 14 minutes as he converted a cutback by Arthur Masuaku, who was played in by a superb piece of skill from Lingard.

Jarrod Bowen added a third in the 38th minute, rifling a shot beyond Patricio after Lingard’s fine run and pass.

Wolves pulled a goal back just before the break when Leander Dendoncker headed in following a brilliant run and cross from Adama Traore.

On 68 minutes, Fabio Silva drilled in Wolves’ second from Pedro Neto’s pass to set up a tense finale.

Neto blasted over as West Ham held on to avoid losing a three-goal lead for the second match in a row. They climb above Chelsea into fourth on 52 points.

Wolves drop to 14th on 35 points.

LACAZZETE HELP GUNNERS FIGHT BACK IN A DRAMATIC 3-3 DRAW AT WESTHAM

Alexandre Lacazette scored a late header as Arsenal fought back from 3-0 down to claim an entertaining 3-3 draw at West Ham United.

The Gunners were three goals down after only 32 minutes.

Jesse Lingard spectacularly drove West Ham’s opener high into the net on 15 minutes. Less than two minutes later, he took a quick free-kick to Jarrod Bowen, who drove the ball inside the near post for the second.

Tomas Soucek added a third when he diverted a Michail Antonio header past goalkeeper Bernd Leno, but before half-time the Czech midfielder deflected Lacazette’s shot into his own net to give the visitors hope.

Michael Dawson turned Calum Chambers’ cross into his own net for Arsenal’s second on 61 minutes, before Antonio hit the post from a Said Benrahma pass from close range.

Lacazette completed the comeback with eight minutes left when he headed in substitute Nicolas Pepe’s right-wing cross at the far post.

West Ham stay fifth on 49 points. Arsenal move up to ninth on 42, ahead of Aston Villa, who play Tottenham Hotspur tonight.

WESTHAM OWN GOAL GIVES UNITED THREE POINTS, HELPS OLE’S MEN RETAIN SECOND SPOT

Manchester United will start April second in the Premier League standings after Craig Dawson’s own goal saw high-flying West Ham fall to defeat at Old Trafford.

With the Europa League trip to AC Milan and FA Cup quarter-final at Leicester coming up before the international break, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side kicked off an important week with a solid performance on Sunday.

Mason Greenwood twice struck the post on a night when Dawson’s own goal proved the difference.

David Moyes’ men were set up to frustrate a month on from their extra-time FA Cup loss at Old Trafford and failed to muster a shot in the first half – the first Premier League side to manage that since March 2018

But the Hammers also gave little away in the opening period, with Lukasz Fabianski superbly tipping a low Greenwood shot onto the post when frustrated United had their best chance.

But Solskjaer’s side finally found a way through eight minutes after the break when Bruno Fernandes’ corner was touched on by Scott McTominay and the unsighted Dawson turned into his own net.

West Ham attacked with more purpose after falling behind but Moyes’ wait for a first win away at Old Trafford continues, with Fernandes superbly denied before Greenwood thumped the post as United looked to settle any nerves.

The visitors had started positively but failed to launch a serious first-half attack, with Michail Antonio left ploughing a lonely furrow up top.

Moyes’ men are a threat from crosses and Dean Henderson – again deputising for David De Gea – made no mistake when clearing a deflected Aaron Cresswell ball from the left, leaving Jarrod Bowen needing treatment.

Harry Maguire let his team-mates know in no uncertain terms that they needed to “tidy up” and stop giving the ball away during that expletive-filled break in play that was followed by the hosts’ best chance to that point.

Quick build-up after winning the ball ended with Greenwood cutting onto his left and floating a cross to the far post, where Marcus Rashford – a surprise starter after an ankle issue – failed to get clean contact.

Fabianski just about gathered a dangerous cross from Greenwood soon after but West Ham were defending well on the whole, throwing themselves in the way of shots and clearing balls into the box.

But the visitors had their goalkeeper to thank for keeping things level at the break as United attacked at pace and Greenwood hit a low, left-footed shot that Fabianski superbly tipped onto the post in the 37th minute.

Rashford got away a tame header from a clipped Fernandes pass that the West Ham goalkeeper stopped simply before the break, from which the hosts returned strongly.

Vladimir Coufal did well to prod behind a Greenwood cross that Rashford was ready to tap home at the far post, but the resulting corner proved costly.

Fernandes swung in the set-piece from the left and Dawson directed into his own net under pressure from Maguire in the 53rd minute.
The goal opened play up. The video assistant referee ruled Maguire had not fouled Tomas Soucek in the box after a review, with the giant Czech midfielder towering over the United defender and heading wide soon after.

Fernandes forced Fabianski into a fine one-handed stop down to his right in between those moments, with Moyes turning to Said Benrahma and Manuel Lanzini in a bid to inject new attacking impetus.

Play was swinging from end to end as both sides pushed, with Maguire stretching to cut out a Coufal cross before Issa Diop inexplicably welcomed on Greenwood and saw the teenager rattle the post in the 77th minute.

Shaw threw himself in front of a Soucek attempt as United held out for a fourth successive league clean sheet for the first time under Solskjaer.

WESTHAM STILL ON COURSE FOR TOP FOUR AFTER 2-0 WIN AGAINST LEEDS

Goals from Jesse Lingard and Craig Dawson kept West Ham in the hunt for a top-four Premier League finish with a 2-0 win over Leeds at the London Stadium.

The Hammers are back up to fifth after Lingard converted the rebound from his own missed penalty and fellow January signing Dawson crashed in a fine header.

A year ago on Sunday West Ham played their final match before lockdown, a 1-0 defeat at Arsenal which left them out of the relegation zone only on goal difference.

Since then, West Ham have collected 60 points from 34 games and transformed themselves from a side battling the drop to one mounting a genuine challenge for European qualification.

The visitors then had the ball in the net twice in the space of two minutes, only for both goals to be chalked off.

First, Costa crossed for Tyler Roberts to tap home but a flag was raised and VAR’s lines confirmed that the Portuguese winger’s knee had strayed offside when Patrick Bamford flicked the ball on.

Moments later Bamford was presented with a tap-in but the ball had just gone out of play when Raphinha cut it back from the byline.

But Leeds’ boom or bust policy was exposed again as West Ham took the lead in the 20th minute with virtually their first attack.

Lingard played a neat one-two with Said Benrahma and skipped into the area, where Luke Ayling clumsily brought him down.

Lingard had wanted to take the spot-kick he won against Sheffield United last month, only for skipper Declan Rice to pull rank.

This time Lingard was allowed to take it, but Rice might well be back on penalties next time as Leeds keeper Ilan Meslier saved the Manchester United loanee’s weak effort.

Fortunately for a relieved Lingard, the ball bounced straight back to his feet and he gratefully tucked in the rebound.

Eight minutes later West Ham doubled their lead, Dawson arriving at the far post to head in Aaron Cresswell’s corner.

The transformation of Dawson has almost been as impressive as that of West Ham – the centre-half who could not get a game in the Championship at Watford earlier this season could soon be a Champions League player.

He almost added a third before half-time but this time his header, from another Cresswell corner, came back off a post.

Bamford should have halved the deficit at the start of the second half when he was put through by Diego Llorente.

The striker had time to let the ball run into his stride and open his body to curl the ball around Lukasz Fabianski, only to send it the wrong side of the post.

At the other end Pablo Fornals took aim from 25 yards and his volley looped over Meslier bounced off the crossbar.

Leeds continued to create chances but Fabianski saved a fierce drive from Raphinha, Bamford lifted a sitter over the crossbar and Dawson capped a man-of-the-match display by clearing a late deflection off Vladimir Coufal off the line.

TOP FOUR FINISH POSSIBLE FOR WESTHAM – DAVID MOYES

West Ham boss David Moyes has said finishing in the top four of the Premier League “is a possibility” for his side this season.

The Hammers, who are currently sixth, have not finished in the top four since 1985-86.

“A top-10 position would be excellent for West Ham considering where we were – but we’re much higher up now, so I’m looking up,” Moyes told Football Focus.

“I don’t see why we can’t be around those [top four] positions.”

West Ham, who are set to face Leeds at London Stadium on Monday, have won 13 league games this season – three more than they managed in the 2019-20 campaign.

“We wanted to get away from the West Ham where you weren’t sure which West Ham was going to turn up – were you going to get a disappointing result against a team you shouldn’t, or win when you probably weren’t expecting to?” said Moyes.

He added: “The players have changed my mentality because now I’m looking up to see how high I can get – I have to praise the players for that.”

The former Everton and Manchester United boss recognises results are in stark contrast to this time last season, but thinks there is more to come from his side.

“I hope with West Ham we can build a really exciting young team – that would be my big hope for us now. This time last year we were talking about do you think you can avoid relegation, can you stay out of the bottom three?

“People are asking different questions now – do you think you can finish top four or qualify for Europe? It shows you how far we’ve come,” said Moyes.

The Scottish manager, who returned to West Ham in 2019 after being let go in 2018 after less than a year in charge, says that things feel different this time around.

“I’m glad to be back. The first time round I really enjoyed myself and I was disappointed when I wasn’t asked to stay on because I thought we’d done a good enough job to remain in the position.

“I admired the owners for coming back for me and realising the job we had done in the first place was a good one,” he said.

Moyes guided West Ham to a 13th-place finish in the 2017-18 season, despite the club being in the relegation zone when he joined in November.

“We’re in a sad world of football management at the moment where changing managers very quickly does happen.

“Managers continually have to prove themselves all of the time. Whatever you’ve got in the bag – experience, cups, medals – I don’t know if that counts for an awful lot,” Moyes added.
