GOING TO LONDON: TIMO WERNER BREAKS LEIPZIG RECORD BEFORE CHELSEA MOVE.

Timo Werner has become RB Leipzig’s all-time leading goalscorer in his final appearance for the Bundesliga club before his move to Chelsea.

Earlier this month, Frank Lampard’s side completed a £53 million deal with RB Leipzig to sign Werner this summer.

Meanwhile, RB Leipzig’s Bundesliga season finished on Saturday and the club secured a third-placed finish with a 2-1 victory over Augsburg. Werner scored twice in that match in doing so he overtook Daniel Frahn to become RB Leipzig’s top scorer in the club’s history with 95 goals.

Werner also equalled another Bundesliga record with his double as his record of 17 goals scored away from home this term is the same as Jupp Heynckes managed in the 1973-74 season.

Werner finished the Bundesliga campaign with 28 goals – which is the highest total from any German player since Mario Gomez, who also scored 28 times in the 2010-11 campaign.

Only Robert Lewandowski scored more in the Bundesliga this season as the Poland international ended the campaign with 34 goals for Bayern Munich. RB Leipzig’s season is not over as they remain in the Champions League, but it has already been announced that Werner will join Chelsea before the competition gets back under way

Speaking after Chelsea completed their move for Werner, Lampard said: ‘I have certainly followed him for a while just as a talented player before I took this job.

He will strengthen us, he is a huge talent who had a fantastic season. ‘I had good conversations with Timo personally. He understands our project and what we want to do as a club. ‘We’re pleased he’s decided to come to us and look forward to him joining next season.

CITY SET TO GIVE LIVERPOOL FIRST GUARD OF HONOUR

Man City are set to be first team to give Liverpool guard of honour after Premier League title win.

Liverpool won their first ever Premier League title on Thursday with seven matches of the season left after Chelsea beat Manchester City.

City’s defeat confirmed the inevitable as the Reds won their first topflight title in 30 years with one of the most dominant seasons in English football. They are currently 23 points ahead of second-placed City, who won the title in the last two previous seasons.

As luck would have it, Liverpool’s next Premier League match is against the club they de-throned, Manchester City, next Thursday.

Pep Guardiola’s side are expected to give the new Premier League champions a guard of honour at the Etihad Stadium. The gesture is not compulsory but is often tradition once a team wins the Premier League before the final day.

City will not be the only team to give Liverpool the guard of honour, however, as seven teams are expected to do so before they play the champions.

Aston Villa, Brighton, Burnley, Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle are all set to congratulate Liverpool before their matches as the season enters the final game weeks.

However, the Premier League still need to approve the guard of honour due to new protocols enforced by the coronavirus pandemic.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have taken no time to start celebrating, as they popped the champagne at a part held at a hotel on Thursday evening.

Klopp let loose with some hilarious dad-dancing, whilst Reds fans gathered in their thousands outside Anfield after 30 years of waiting for a topflight title.

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum said winning the title was ‘more beautiful’ because of the club’s loyal fan base.

‘It’s difficult to describe it, but I can say that I’m really happy, really pleased that I can be part of this team and this club,’ the Dutchman told LFCTV.

‘Really happy that we can give this title to the supporters because they have waited so long for this title.

‘The supporters were so loyal during the years since I’m here and far before I was here.

‘That makes it more beautiful because when you have such loyal supporters and you can give them one of the best gifts it makes it more beautiful than it is.’

ARSENAL BEAT SAINTS TO END TROUBLED START TO LIFE AFTER COVID-19 BREAK

Arsenal kept alive their hopes of qualifying for Europe as Eddie Nketiah punished a howler from Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy to inspire a much-needed 2-0 win on Thursday.

Mikel Arteta’s side were handed the opener in the first half at St Mary’s when Nketiah picked off McCarthy’s pass and fired home.

Joe Willock doubled Arsenal’s lead late in the second half, moments after Southampton’s Jack Stephens was sent off for bringing down Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Arsenal had suffered two successive defeats following the Premier League restart after the coronavirus hiatus.

That wretched run effectively ended their bid to reach the Champions League and sparked criticism of Arteta’s decision to give new contracts to David Luiz and Cedric Soares despite their problems with poor form and injuries respectively.

Against the dispiriting backdrop, Arsenal’s success at St Mary’s, which lifted them into ninth place and kept them in the hunt for a Europa League berth, was a welcome tonic for Arteta.

Arsenal had kicked off with 40 points, which ranked as their joint lowest tally after 30 games of a Premier League campaign.

Matteo Guendouzi was dropped just days after reports that Arteta has grown frustrated with the French midfielder’s behaviour, while Alexandre Lacazette and Mesut Ozil were left on the bench.

Guendouzi reportedly taunted Brighton players about how much he earns during Saturday’s match and clashed with Seagulls striker Neal Maupay after the final whistle, with his absence at St Mary’s put down to “squad management” by Arteta.

Despite all the turbulence around Arsenal at present, they started brightly in scorching hot temperatures on the south-coast.

Aubameyang should have put Arsenal ahead early on but, after racing into the penalty area, the Gabon forward’s close-range shot cannoned off the bar and bounced clear.

The Gunners were making all the running and their pressure was rewarded in the 20th minute thanks to the gift from McCarthy.

Chasing down Jan Bednarek’s ball to McCarthy, Nketiah forced a woefully misdirected pass from the Saints keeper, pounced on the loose ball and slotted into the empty net.

It was the 21-year-old’s second Premier League goal of the season and his fourth in all competitions for the Gunners after a loan spell at Leeds.

Arsenal had blown the lead at Brighton and have a poor away record this season, so alarm bells were ringing when Southampton striker Danny Ings was left unmarked to volley over.

Southampton were pushing hard and Ryan Bertrand fired into the side-netting from a tight angle before Shane Long forced a good stop from Emiliano Martinez.

But Stephens saw red for his foul on Aubameyang on the edge of the area and Willock slotted home from close-range to seal the points in the 87th minute.

Liverpool clinch league Title

Liverpool’s 30-year wait for a top-flight title is over after Manchester City lost 2-1 at Chelsea to confirm the Reds as Premier League champions.

Jurgen Klopp’s side needed one victory to seal the league but City’s failure to win means they cannot be caught.

It is Liverpool’s 19th top-flight title and their first since 1989-90.

Despite being urged to “stay home” by the city’s metro mayor because of coronavirus, thousands of fans gathered at Anfield to celebrate.

Many of the supporters who congregated at the club’s ground wore face masks and some lit flares.

A number of Reds players, including goalkeeper Alisson, defender Virgil van Dijk and midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, celebrated together after watching the Chelsea-City game.

Klopp, wearing a Liverpool shirt and clearly emotional, told Sky Sports: “I have no words, it’s unbelievable.

“It’s much more than I ever thought would be possible. Becoming champion with this club is absolutely incredible.

“I haven’t waited 30 years – I have been here for four and a half years – but it is quite an achievement, especially with the three-month break because nobody knew if we could go on.

“I know it is difficult for people in this moment but we could not hold back. We will enjoy this with our supporters when we can.”

Wolves get closer to Top four

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe said “it hurts deeply” after a 1-0 defeat at Wolves kept them in the Premier League relegation zone.

Raul Jimenez scored almost a carbon copy of his opener in Saturday’s win at West Ham to claim his 15th league goal of the season and bolster Wolves’ Champions League qualification hopes.

Bournemouth, who failed to produce a shot on target, remain without a point away from home in 2020 and stay behind 17th-placed West Ham on goal difference.

“We are well aware of where we are and the challenges we face in forgetting that position,” said Howe.

“One result will change everything for us at this moment and that is what we have to try and commit to.”

Adama Traore was recalled by Wolves after coming off the bench to play a part in both goals at West Ham and the Spanish winger again crossed for Mexico striker Jimenez to head home.

It was the 10th time they have combined for a league goal this season – more than any other pair in the top flight.

That was enough to keep Wolves level with fifth-placed Manchester United – 3-0 winners over Sheffield United on Wednesday – and move to within two points of fourth-placed Chelsea, who host Manchester City on Thursday.

Lazio Title hopes Dashed

Atalanta came from 2-0 down to beat Lazio and give Juventus a huge boost in the Serie A title race.

Juve are four points clear at the top after Lazio’s club-record 21-game unbeaten league run came to an end.

Lazio looked in control after Marten de Roon’s own goal and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic’s 20-yard shot after 11 minutes.

But Robin Gosens’ header and Ruslan Malinovskyi’s long-range effort got Atalanta level before Jose Luis Palomino’s headed winner.

Simone Inzaghi’s Lazio had not lost a league game since 25 September when they were beaten 1-0 by Inter Milan.

Champions League quarter-finalists Atalanta, who are fourth in the table, are the top scorers in Serie A with 77 goals.

Juventus will win a ninth title in a row if they win 10 of their final 11 games.
