EARLY INJURY RUINS ARJEN ROBBEN’S RETURN TO DUTCH LEAGUE.

Arjen Robben’s comeback lasted only 28 minutes as he was injured during Groningen’s game with PSV Eindhoven on the opening weekend of the Eredivisie season.

The 36-year-old Netherlands winger quit football in July 2019 after a hugely successful career, but came back this summer to rejoin the club where he started.

He was welcomed back by 6,049 excited fans for his first start since 2018, but pulled up with a first-half injury and had to be replaced.

Robben, who won 96 caps, won league titles with PSV, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich – as well as the 2013 Champions League with the German club.

He made 19 appearances in an injury-hit 2018-19 with Bayern – with his last game coming as a substitute in their 3-0 German Cup final win over RB Leipzig – before announcing his retirement.

But this summer Groningen persuaded him to come back after showing him a montage of basketball legend Michael Jordan, who won three more NBA titles after coming out of retirement.

ARSENAL THRASH FULHAM 3-0 IN SEASON OPENER.

Arsenal got their Premier League campaign underway with a 3-0 win at promoted Fulham thanks to goals from Alexandre Lacazette, new signing Gabriel and captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the opening game of the season on Saturday.

Lacazette fired the Gunners ahead in the eighth minute after poor defending by the home side before new signing Gabriel made it 2-0 in the 49th and Aubameyang put the icing on the cake with a superb shot into the top corner.

Right back Denis Odoi forced a save from Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno early on but that was as good as it got for Fulham, whose opening-day performance suggests that staying in the top flight could be a tall order.

Lacazette was left with the simple task of poking the ball in from close range after a comedy of errors by the home side, who enjoyed a slice of good fortune when Willian hit the post with a 22nd-minute free kick.

Brazilian defender Gabriel, who joined Arsenal from Ligue 1 side Lille, made it 2-0 with a thumping header after a corner swung in by Willian, who enjoyed a fine debut after his summer move from cross-town rivals Chelsea.

Aubameyang put the icing on the cake in the 57th minute with a rasping shot from inside the penalty area and Arsenal missed several chances in the closing stages to win by an even bigger margin at Craven Cottage.

MAN UNITED SHOCKED BY ASTON VILLA IN FINAL PRESEASON FRIENDLY.

Manchester United will head into the new season on a losing note after Aston Villa beat them in a pre-season friendly.

Man Utd don’t begin their Premier League campaign until next week, when they will play Crystal Palace. They were given an extra week to prepare after being involved in the delayed Europa League over the summer.

However, things didn’t go to plan for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, as Villa – whose game against Manchester City was postponed because of their opponents’ European commitments in August – claimed victory.

Villa’s new signing Ollie Watkins scored the only goal of the game to give them a 1-0 win.

Solskjaer fielded a relatively strong side, although he was still without some first team regulars.

Dean Henderson, who is preparing to compete for the number one spot this season, started in goal instead of David De Gea.

Diogo Dalot, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw formed United’s back four.

New signing Donny van de Beek joined Scott McTominay in midfield, and Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford and Dan James played in behind Odion Ighalo.

Bruno Fernandes was not involved, having recently returned from Portugal, where he was attending the birth of his child.

However, United will still have been disappointed to miss out on the win, against a Villa side who also claimed the scalp of Arsenal in their most recent friendly before this one.

SALAH’S HATRICK HELP LIVERPOOL EDGE STUBBORN LEEDS IN SEVEN GOAL THRILLER.

Mohamed Salah continued his phenomenal goalscoring record at Anfield as his hat trick secured a 4-3 win for Liverpool against Premier League new boys Leeds United.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men looked destined to end their 16-year absence from the top flight with a determined draw – which they would have been fantastic value for.

But ‘El Loco’ could only look on and grimace as club record signing Rodrigo gave away a penalty in the 87th minute, which Salah duly stepped up and slotted home.

Life in the Premier League could not have gotten off to a worse start for Leeds as debutant Robin Koch was adjudged to have handled Mohamed Salah’s goalbound shot in the box, with the Egypt international converting the spot-kick.

The Whites were level within minutes as Kalvin Phillips’ raking pass found Jack Harrison on the left wing and the on-loan Manchester City man left Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold in his wake before firing home.

The champions regained the lead when Virgil van Dijk powered home a corner, but the Netherlands skipper was completely at fault for Leeds’ second equaliser as his poor touch let in Patrick Bamford to lift the ball over Alisson.

Defensive mishaps seemed to be the order of the day as confusion in the visitor’s box gifted Salah the opportunity to lash home a venomous volley into the top corner to put Liverpool back in front.

The game’s sixth goal was perhaps the best as Helder Costa’s searching pass into the box found Mathues Klich in the box, who controlled the ball into the air and clinically volleyed into the net.

Although it was the type of goal which deserved fans in attendance, the Championship winners will head into their next Premier League fixture at home to Play-Off winners Fulham secure in the knowledge they belong at this level.

Yet they will need to be more resolute at the back as Rodrigo’s sloppy tackle on Fabinho in the box gifted Salah the opportunity to get his third Premier League hat-trick and snatch the points for the hosts.

For Liverpool, some impatient supporters will call for further investment into the squad to improve the depth. Yet with Salah reaching 97 goals in just 154 games for the Reds, perhaps it is more important to keep the 28-year-old fit at all costs.

BARCELONA REMOVE PHILIPPE COUTINHO AS CLUB’S NO.7

Antoine Griezmann is Barcelona’s new No.7 after the taking the shirt from Philippe Coutinho.

Griezmann tried to take the No.7 shirt at the start of last season following his mega £107.6 million transfer from Atletico Madrid.

But the Spanish FA blocked his request as they do not allow players to have more than one number in the same campaign.

He inherited the No.17 shirt with Coutinho donning the No.7 shirt. The Brazilian went onto complete a loan move to Bayern Munich, spending the 2019/20 term in Germany.

But, ahead of the new season, Barcelona have handed the No.7 shirt to Griezmann who called it an “honour” on social media.

He also thanked Coutinho for giving up the shirt.

On Twitter, he wrote: “An honor to wear the 7 at Barça!

“I want to thank @Phil_Coutinho, who besides being a great player is a great companion.”

PSG SIGN OUT OF FAVOUR ROMA CAPTAIN.

PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN HAVE signed Italy international Alessandro Florenzi on a season-long loan from Roma, the Ligue 1 champions announced on Friday.

In a statement PSG said that they had an option to buy the 29-year-old full-back, who will likely replace Thomas Meunier following his departure for Borussia Dortmund, come the end of the season.

He is the first new face to arrive in the French capital during this summer transfer window, with the other major move being the permanent signing of Argentina international forward Mauro Icardi, who had also been on loan.

“We have extraordinary challenges ahead of us this season, and it will be a pleasure and an honour to face them alongside my new teammates, who are some of the best players in the world,” Florenzi said in a statement.

Florenzi has spent almost his entire career playing for his hometown team Roma, where he has played 280 matches over eight seasons after coming through the youth ranks in the Italian capital.

However he has not been a key player the plans of the Serie A side’s coach Paulo Fonseca despite becoming club captain in 2019 following the departures of fellow Romans Francesco Totti and Daniele De Rossi.

Despite being sent out on loan to Valencia in the second half of last season Florenzi is still a part of Roberto Mancini’s Italy set-up and played for the ‘Azzurri’ in their 1-1 Uefa Nations League draw with Bosnia earlier this month.

He has played 36 times for his national team, scoring twice.

Florenzi arrives at PSG with last season’s Champions League finalists in the midst of an internal coronavirus crisis that has left seven of their first team stars positive for the disease.

A second-string line-up shorn of a host of last season’s regulars fell 1-0 at newly-promoted Lens on Thursday night, their first match of the new Ligue 1 season.

Thomas Tuchel’s side take on fierce rivals Marseille at the Parc des Princes on Sunday night before another home match with Metz which was their original opening fixture on Wednesday and a trip to Nice the following Sunday.

EDOUARD MENDY SET FOR CHELSEA MEDICAL AFTER AGREEING TERMS WITH LONDON CLUB

Edouard Mendy is travelling to London to undergo his medical after Rennes accepted Chelsea’s latest offer for the goalkeeper as Frank Lampard also plots a move for West Ham star Declan Rice, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Chelsea have been in the market for a new keeper all summer due to doubts over Kepa Arrizabalaga after their club-record signing was axed by Lampard during the second half of last season following a string of poor performances.

Mendy has emerged as a prime target in recent weeks after impressing with Rennes last season and media reports recently show that Chelsea were closing-in on an £18m deal after submitting an improved offer for the Senegal international.

It appears the deal is now done as Romano claims Rennes have accepted Chelsea’s offer and Mendy is now en route to London to undergo his medical and complete his move to Stamford Bridge.

The Guardian journalist says personal terms have already been agreed with the goalkeeper so he’s set to become Chelsea’s latest big-money signing and it appears Lampard is still eyeing one more new arrival before the window closes.

Romano claims the Blues boss is still keen on signing Declan Rice and is weighing-up a formal swoop for the defensive midfielder but Chelsea are refusing to meet West Ham’s £74m [€80m] valuation.

So it looks like Mendy is set to join Chelsea over the coming days and the 28-year-old is expected to be immediately installed as Lampard’s number one with Arrizabalaga facing an uncertain future in West London.

LIVERPOOL WILL STRUGGLE TO DEFEND HER PREMIER LEAGUE TITLE – GARY NEVILLE.

It will take a “superhuman effort” for Liverpool to win the Premier League again unless they sign another top-quality player such as Thiago Alcântara, Gary Neville has warned.

Neville said history had taught him to expect a drop-off from Jürgen Klopp’s side this season, and predicted it could lead to Manchester City pipping them to the title next May. “To get to a Champions League final, win it the following season, and then to go again to win the Premier League title is a huge emotional drain on that group of Liverpool players for three years,” he said. “To ask them to go again and achieve that same standard would be a superhuman effort.

It wouldn’t be ridiculous to suggest there will be a slight drop-off, if they don’t somehow stimulate that squad by doing something to give them that lift again. Thiago would be the big one. He is world class and would give them a world-class presence in an area of the field where they don’t have one.”

Thiago’s contract with Bayern runs out next summer, and while Liverpool have been linked with the Spain international they are yet to make a bid. But Neville warned: “Liverpool are not perfect. They have a world-class goalkeeper, centre-back and strikers. They have really good midfield players with good work ethic but with Thiago would be another step. He would control the game with that weight of pass, that nous.”

Neville also expressed his disappointment in Manchester United’s board for not doing more to back Ole Gunnar Solskjær in the transfer market this summer – and said he was also concerned that the battle for the No 1 spot between David de Gea and Dean Henderson could prove an unwelcome subplot.

“It’s never an ideal situation,” he said. “You’re always better having an excellent No 1 and a quite clear, very good No 2. Henderson isn’t going to sit around and wait. And every time De Gea makes some mistake we’ll be asking: is this Henderson’s moment?

“Certainly when we had a changing goalkeeping situation, say between Roy Carroll and Tim Howard, it was unhealthy as none of them really knew who the No 1 was. None of them probably felt fully supported – and they always probably felt like they were one mistake away from the other one playing. That could happen with De Gea and Henderson. It’s going to be a real challenge of Ole’s management skills to keep them both happy, because I think that’s impossible.”

Neville also urged United’s board to move quickly to bring in new players to help Solskjær get closer to Liverpool and City. “A trophy and breaking that top two has to be the next step. But that’s going to be difficult. Ole needs more players and support from the board to do that.

“When you look at the bench, the game changers aren’t there, the depth is not there. They definitely need a centre-back, a midfield player, a forward and a right winger, and potentially another defender, maybe a left-back too. I am disappointed because I wanted the players that Chelsea signed to go to United.”

Neville said that while he expected City to win the Premier League he remained concerned with their defensive failings. “Last season, with Vincent Kompany leaving and Aymeric Laporte getting injured, the reaction in transition to losing the ball was nowhere near as good as it had been in the previous two seasons, but I think Pep Guardiola will want to bounce back.”

The Sky Sports pundit also predicted Leeds would provide “the most fascinating story” of the season. “When people say football was better 20 years ago, absolutely not. Promoted teams were rigid but nowadays we’re seeing managers come up with philosophies. Marcelo Bielsa is front foot. They are going to Anfield on the first day, and while they might get a bloody nose they’ll get one fighting the way he wants to fight.”

WOLVES ANNOUNCE ANOTHER SIGNING FROM PORTO.

Wolves have completed their latest raid on Porto, this time signing highly-rated midfielder Vitinha.

The 20-year-old joined Wolves’ growing Portuguese contingent after the clubs agreed a loan deal with an option to buy.

It is thought Wolves must pay a fee of around £18million should they wish to make the move permanent next summer.

The signing of the attacking central midfielder – also known as Vitor Ferreira – follows the arrival of Fabio Silva from the Portuguese giants last week in a £35m club record move, as well as defender Fernando Marcal from Olympique Lyonnais.

He’s is a client of Jorge Mendes’ Gestifute agency, which has close ties with Wolves owners Fosun.

The move has been hailed by Jeff Shi, who described the Portugal under-21 player as ‘an integral component’ of their transfer window plans.

The Wolves chairman said: “Vitinha is a crucial signing and an integral component in our recruitment plan for this summer.

“He is an exciting and special young talent, with an abundance of technique and creativity, who can provide a fresh option this season.

“Vitinha’s signing demonstrates our ambition and strategy to further evolve our first team and continue to progress on the pitch.”

Vitinha has played five times for Portugal under-21s and has also represented them at under-17, 18 and 19 levels.

His arrival comes with the ringing endorsement of former Porto defender Luis Mata, who expressed surprise that he was allowed to leave Porto in the current window.

Mata, who played with Ferreira when the youngster was working his way through the ranks with Porto B, said he had expected the player to stay in Portugal and make his mark in the Porto senior team.

“Of course I am surprised. I thought Vitinha would remain in the FC Porto team,” Mata said in an interview with Portuguese outlet Desporto ao Minuto.

“He was promoted [to the first team] in the middle of last season and showed a lot of quality, despite not having played so many games.

“It is a surprise that he is leaving for Wolverhampton in this transfer window.

I hoped he would stay, at least, this season and assert himself at Porto.”

However, Mata said he fully expects Vitinha to seize his opportunity to ‘do beautiful things”‘ under the guidance of Nuno Espirito Santo.

“Although it is a surprise, Vitinha really has a lot of quality and enormous potential,” he added.

“Step by step, and by gaining confidence in a different country and in a very demanding league, I believe he will be very successful at Wolves.

“He will do beautiful things at Wolves.“
