CHELSEA SENDS ZAPPACOSTA ON ANOTHER SEASON LONG-LOAN DEAL

Chelsea officially confirmed on Saturday morning that out-of-favour full-back Davide Zappacosta has joined Genoa on loan for the season.

Zappacosta arrived in the summer of 2017 for an initial fee of £23m, as per the Guardian. The Italy international’s 52 appearances for the Blues all came in his first two seasons with the club.

The right-back fell down the pecking order during the 18/19 campaign, with the west London outfit subsequently loaning Zappacosta out to Roma for the 19/20 season.

A serious knee injury dented Zappacosta’s plans of reigniting his career though, leaving the ace to start just six of his nine appearances last term.

The 28-year-old now has the task of helping Genoa battle against relegation, the Serie A outfit finished 17th last term, just one place above the drop.

Frank Lampard’s made a pretty wise decision in loaning Zappacosta out, it was unlikely that the Italian would work his way back as an important player for the Blues.

Chelsea also have Reece James and Cesar Azpilicueta to call on as their right-back options, so there’s really no room for Zappacosta as it stands.

ASTON VILLA SIGN LYON’S BERTRAND TRAORE.

Aston Villa have signed forward Bertrand Traore from Lyon on a four-year contract after agreeing a deal worth around £17m plus £2m in add-ons.

Traore, who knows Villa coach John Terry from his time at Chelsea, becomes their fourth major signing of the window.

Villa have already broken their transfer record to sign Ollie Watkins from Brentford on a five-year deal, while Matty Cash has also joined on a five-year deal from Nottingham Forest and goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has arrived from Arsenal.

Lyon also retain a 15 per cent sell-on clause on the 25-year-old, who has experience of playing in the Champions League for the French club last season, while he also scored four times in 32 appearances in all competitions.

We’re delighted that Bertrand has chosen to come to Villa,” said Villa boss Dean Smith. “He’s a player with immense talent who will really enhance our attacking options.”

The Burkina Faso international joined Lyon from Chelsea for €10m (£9.2m) in June 2017 and scored 33 times in 126 matches across three seasons, enjoying his most productive spell in his first season with 17 goals.

The signing is a major boost for Smith, who has revealed Wesley may not return from his knee injury until next year.

The forward sustained a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury on New Year’s Day against Burnley and Smith has admitted the Brazil international is nowhere near a first-team comeback.

When asked on the player’s potential return, Smith said: “We believed it was going to be a 12-month injury and nothing has told us otherwise yet.

It was quite a bad injury he suffered. He’s back now with us but is not training in any shape or form yet.

“He’s getting full range back into it and the swelling has gone down on his knee now. Hopefully he’ll be back as soon as possible.”

THIAGO SIGNS FOUR YEAR CONTRACT WITH LIVERPOOL.

33, abosede kuboye crescent

Reports emerged on Thursday morning that Liverpool had agreed a £25million deal to sign the Spain international. And a deal is now said to be completed for the Bayern Munich star.

Romano claims Thiago promised to Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp in June that he would join the Reds.

Thiago played a crucial role in helping Bayern win the Champions League only last month.

But that appears to have been his final competitive game for the Bundesliga giants.

Liverpool are set to pay £20m in four instalments of £5m over the four years of the contract.

The extra £5m will be made up by performance-related add-ons.

Klopp was asked about a deal for Thiago on Thursday but refused to give anything away.

Nothing, actually. Absolutely nothing,” he told Sky Sports.

“How it always is, we are not part of speculation. We try to never be. That’s it.

When something is announced, you are the person I will call!”

“It’s completely normal that we have to make another step because other teams will make other steps as well.

“It has nothing to do with being champions, we constantly try to develop and find solutions to the new challenges before we have the problems with them. That’s how football works.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson has admitted he is a fan of Thiago but said there had been no sign of the 29-year-old at the club’s Melwood training ground amid reports the player was undergoing a medical.

“When you are at a club like Liverpool, you get linked with players all the time,” Robertson told Sky Sports.

For us, we focus on our squad. Nobody is in Melwood in terms of Thiago or any other player now for a new signing. Until something is signed on the dotted line then we don’t listen to rumours.

“Our aim is to excite fans, we excited them last season. They believed we might have won the league by Christmas time, but we [the players] didn’t.

“If we’re not exciting the fans, we’re not doing something right.

“If the club are exciting the fans with a potential link or potential rumour that we are going to sign this player then I suppose we are doing something right.

I have watched him. He is a fantastic player. A player full of talent. He would add to the quality of squad and probably any team in the world.

“If we get him, great. If we don’t then it is what it is. But we’ll wait and see until it’s confirmed then maybe I can sit down again and talk about his qualities a bit more.”

PREMIER LEAGUE AGREE NEW CHINA BROADCAST DEAL.

The Premier League has agreed a new broadcast deal in China to cover the rest of the 2020-21 season.

A contract has been signed with Tencent Sports after its previous £564m deal with PPTV was terminated with immediate effect earlier this month.

Viewers in China will have access to matches from this weekend.

The previous agreement with PPTV, signed in 2019 and due to run until 2022, ended after a £160m payment due in March was not received.

Financial details of the new deal have not been disclosed.

China has been the English top flight’s most lucrative overseas television rights territory.

It is understood the reasons for the termination were financial rather than political.

More than half of this season’s remaining 372 matches will be made available free-to-air in China, with the rest accessible via subscription.

Clubs will also be able to share short in-play clips to engage with supporters, the first such deal the Premier League has done anywhere in the world.

“We and our clubs have an extremely passionate fanbase in China and are looking forward to working with the team at Tencent to engage with fans in new ways over the coming season,” said Premier League chief executive Richard Masters.

LEICESTER CITY TO COMPLETE DEAL FOR ROMA FORWARD.

Leicester have agreed on a deal, in principle, to sign Roma’s Cengiz Under on loan with an obligation to buy him next summer, according to reports.

Brendan Rodgers’ side will pay £24.6m at the end of the season for the Turkish international who scored three goals in Serie A last year.

Rodgers has been in the market for a winger, having failed to attract Trincao from Barcelona.

The loan to buy deal is seemingly a mark of the way the club will do their business in what are currently difficult financial circumstances.

The 23-year-old joined Roma from Istanbul Basaksehir after impressing in his homeland, however, things haven’t gone exactly to plan for Under and he will be looking to kickstart his career once more.

Having made 26 Serie A appearances in each of his first two seasons, Under made just 18 league outings last term and now the Italian giants are hoping to cash in.

A talented youngster with plenty of tricks and skills who will add creativity to a Foxes side already boasting an abundance of forward-thinking players.

Rodgers will be delighted to get Under in at the King Power Stadium and will hope with the help of the rest of the squad he can get the best out of the winger.

GARETH BALE COMPLETES SPECTACULAR RETURN TO TOTTENHAM.

Gareth Bale completed his emotional return to Tottenham on Wednesday night in a move that was driven by Jose Mourinho.

The Wales international has agreed terms on a year-long deal that Sportsmail understands to be worth more than £13million – part of which will be financed by Real Madrid – and he is relishing the prospect of relaunching his career at the club that propelled him to stardom.

There is no indication yet as to when Tottenham – who face Lokomotiv Plovdiv in the Europa League on Thursday – will make an official announcement but it will happen once a few minor contractual issues are signed.

Bale’s return to North London, seven years after he was sold to Madrid for a the world record fee of £90m, is laced with sentiment but it was a move that Mourinho, Tottenham’s manager, felt was absolutely imperative following his side’s dismal 1-0 defeat to Everton last Sunday.

Mourinho was adamant that Tottenham needed Bale’s drive and dynamism to enliven Tottenham’s attack and negotiations accelerated following discussion with Chairman Daniel Levy.

It is understood no players will go in the opposite direction.

The deal for Bale stands as a separate transaction as Tottenham will also move for Sergio Reguilon, Real Madrid’s left-back who has also been linked with Manchester United, on Thursday.

He is due to undergo a medical and will sign a five-year deal with Tottenham, paying £27million fee.

Mourinho had been coy earlier in the day when quizzed on how close a deal was to bring Bale back to north London.

While initially intimating he would make no comment, the Portuguese eventually revealed his admiration for the Welshman – a nod to how much he wanted to get the player.

‘I tried to sign him for Real Madrid which was not possible to do during my time there,’ Mourinho said in his Wednesday press conference. ‘But the president followed my instinct and my knowledge and the season I left he brought Gareth to the club.

There is no secret on that. Even Gareth knows that. But I’m not going to speak about him anymore because he is a Real Madrid player.’

Eric Dier, who will now become a team-mate of Bale’s, insisted prior to Sportsmail’s exclusive story confirming the deal that the players had not discussed Bale’s return in their squad WhatsApp chat.

But the defender described it as an ‘extremely exciting’ time for the club to bring back one of the game’s finest attackers.

‘From the fans’ point of view, when you’re linked with a player of that level, it’s extremely exciting for any club,’ Dier said.

‘For me personally it doesn’t really effect me in any way. It’s not the first time and it won’t be the last time.

‘There’s constantly speculation about people going different places, different talk in football every day.’

Bale became a fan favourite at Spurs where he scored 56 goals and provided 58 assists in 203 appearances.

In 2012-13 he was crowned Tottenham’s Player of the Year and also claimed the PFA Players’ Player of the Year, PFA Young Player of the Year, Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year and Premier League Player of the Season award.

He was the Premier League’s most impressive player and Real Madrid were aggressive in the transfer market in bringing him in to partner Cristiano Ronaldo at the Santiago Bernabeu.

BARCA NEEDS TO SELL TO SECURE DEPAY’S MOVE – KOEMAN.

Ronald Koeman has said Barcelona must sell before they can think about signing Lyon captain Memphis Depay as the head coach expects to start the La Liga season with no additions to the squad.

Depay has been tipped to reunite with former Netherlands coach Koeman at Barca following his exploits for Ligue 1 outfit and Champions League semi-finalists Lyon.

However, Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas prior to Tuesday’s 2-1 loss against Montpellier claimed Barca cannot afford to buy Depay due to their finances caused by the coronavirus global pandemic.

Koeman, who has replaced Quique Setien at Camp Nou, was asked about former Manchester United forward Depay amid talk of a €25 million (£23m/$30m) transfer and he told Fox Sports Netherlands: “For Depay to arrive, you must first sell.”

Barca have been linked with a number of players following a miserable 2019-20 campaign, which saw the Spanish powerhouse dethroned by bitter rivals Real Madrid in La Liga and embarrassed 8-2 by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals.

After receiving Miralem Pjanic in a swap deal that sent Arthur to Serie A champions Juventus, Barca continue to be linked with Inter star Lautaro Martinez.

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has emerged as a possible target for Barca, while former star Thiago Alcantara has also been linked with a move from Bayern.

However, Koeman said: “We’re working towards the new season and I think we will go into it with the same group of players that we have now for pre-season.”

Barca will open their 2020-21 La Liga campaign at home to Unai Emery’s Villarreal on September 26.

TOTTENHAM LAUNCH BID TO RESIGN GARETH BALE FROM REAL MADRID.

Tottenham Hotspur are in negotiations with Real Madrid over a sensational return to north London for
Gareth Bale – with conflicting reports suggesting a loan deal could be in the offing, as well as a swap deal involving Dele Alli.

The possibility of Bale departing the Spanish capital is now stronger than ever, with Manchester United also holding an interest in the alienated Welsh winger. Tottenham, however, appear the favourites for their former superstar.

According to reports, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is doing everything he can to bring Bale back to the club, and one interesting proposal which has emerged is Dele joining Real on loan as part of the deal.

The complicated move would see Bale return to north London on a temporary basis – with Los Blancos paying half of his reported £600,000-a-week wage – while Dele’s wages would also be financed by the Spanish club.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein, meanwhile, reports that while no agreement is in place for Bale to rejoin Tottenham this summer, the Lilywhites are working on a deal.

Spurs have a special place in the 31-year-old’s heart and the player is said to be keen on an incredible return. His agent Jonathan Barnett, who is well known for speaking our about his client’s future, has even told BBC Wales, “Gareth still loves Spurs. We are talking [Spurs, Real and Bale’s camp]. It’s where he wants to be.”

Levy is understood to be ‘obsessed’ by the idea of bringing a modern-day legend back to the club, but wanted to be sure that José Mourinho was on board with such a huge signing before pursuing a deal.

The Welshman’s willingness to depart on a temporary basis – something he previously refused – this summer has handed Tottenham a chance to oversee the winger’s return.

Bale also feels that now is the right time to exit Madrid and play out the final years of his career in the Premier League, leaving behind the non-stop criticism he’s faced in Spain amid an injury-ravaged but still impressive spell in the Spanish capital.

The 31-year-old evolved into a Spurs icon – before his £85m move to Real in 2013 – off the back of an astonishing 2012/13 campaign which earned him PFA Player of the Year honours. The Welshman scored 56 times and added another 58 assists in 203 appearances for Spurs, spread over a six-year spell.

KAI HAVERTZ FIRES LIVERPOOL WARNING AHEAD WEEKEND CLASH.

Kai Havertz has fired a warning to Liverpool after making his debut for Chelsea in the Blues’ 3-1 win over Brighton on Monday night.

The Germany international joined Frank Lampard’s side in a £71m deal from Bayer Leverkusen earlier this month having shone in the Bundesliga, but endured a quiet maiden outing in the Premier League against the Seagulls.

Liverpool, who had been linked with a move for the 21-year-old in the past but never followed through on any interest, are set to provide the opposition for Havertz’s home debut at Stamford Bridge this weekend.

And despite seeing the Reds claim a league double over Chelsea as they finished 33 points ahead of the Londoners to win the Premier League last season, lifting the trophy following a 5-3 win over Lampard’s side at Anfield, Havertz has insisted his new club are more than capable of taking points off Jurgen Klopp ‘s men.

“Of course they are one of the best teams in the world,” he admitted after making his Chelsea debut. “We show respect but we are a very great team as well.

“It will be a very hard game but for them also. We will work hard and I think we will have a chance to take points.”
